At the western end of Fire Island is the restored Fire Island Lighthouse. If you can manage almost 200 steps (with view stops at windows along the way), the view from the top is spectacular in all directions.

You can walk to the Fire Island Lighthouse from Kismet on the Burma Road (dirt road), on the beach, or along the Bay. Once there, you can climb the 192 steps to the top of the lighthouse for spectacular 360 degree views of the Fire Island National Seashore and learn more about the lighthouse's history in the museum located in what used to be the Lighthouse Keeper’s quarters. Tower tours are available until 1 hour before the lighthouse closes and cost $8 per adult (cost is less for children). The lighthouse is open 9:30 am to 6 pm daily July through Labor Day. More info available on the Fire Island Lighthouse website.

Nice bike ride for the entire family. Short parts of the road are unpaved. You can look at the frenzel lens and then climb up in the lighthouse.

The Fire Island Lighthouse is open year-round and is worth a visit in every season. While currently under repair (June 2019), the walk up the 182 steps to the top are worth it. If you can't get up there, explore the grounds and museum.
