Modern Art Oxford has been presenting inspiring exhibitions of contemporary art for 50 years. Today, Modern Art Oxford is internationally recognised as one of the UK’s leading centres of contemporary art. Over the last fifty years, we have worked with some of the most influential figures in the contemporary art world. MAO was founded by the architect Trevor Green in 1966. Its primary aim was ‘the advancement of education of the general public in the modern visual arts’. In 2002, we changed our name to Modern Art Oxford, a change that better reflected a vibrant, changing programme of temporary exhibitions, rather than a museum that housed a collection of artworks.
