The oldest building in San Francisco and in a very welcoming area (near a Wholefoods if you want to build your own snack) and a very lively and delicious ice cream parlor.

If you are a movie aficionado, watch Hitchcock's Vertigo and make sure you visit the cemetery. October 9, 1776 Mission Dolores or Mission San Francisco de Assis was founded by Father Junipero Serra. The mission was named after a nearby arroyo known as the creek of sorrows (dolores). The mission is the oldest intact building in San Francisco of all 21 missions.

Be sure to visit the original Mission de San Francisco Asisi, the oldest building in San Francisco and one of the original Missions built by the Spanish as the settled California. Be sure to tour the garden and it’s the plaque on the wall outside that tells of the Camino Real, the original name for Dolores Street, that connected the various missions up and down the California Coast.

Brief history: Mission Dolores has always had a central place in the religious, civic, and cultural life of San Francisco. Misión San Francisco de Asís was founded June 29, 1776, under the direction of Father Junipero Serra and is both the oldest original intact Mission in California and the oldest building in San Francisco. Today, the Mission Dolores Parish comprises both the Basilica and the Old Mission. True to its origins, the Basilica Parish of Mission Dolores reflects the remarkable diversity and vibrancy of modern San Francisco. Located at the crossroads of the City's Mission District, Castro District, the Lower Haight, Noe Valley, and Upper Market Street neighborhoods, Mission Dolores parishioners come from an enormous array of cultures, places, and backgrounds to worship together. The Old Mission's religious, historic, and architectural significance makes it a unique and memorable destination for visitors to San Francisco. (Excerpt from Mission Dolores.org)
