The Birmingham Zoo is a zoological park that opened in 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama, United States. The Birmingham Zoo is an independent, not for profit, 501 organization, and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, participating in AZA Species Survival Plans. It is both the only AZA accredited coo and the lowest paying zoo in the state of Alabama. Approximately 550 animals of 195 species call the Birmingham Zoo home, including sea lions, zebras, rhinos, elephants, and other endangered species from six continents.

One of the state’s most popular attractions, the Birmingham Zoo, is an ever-evolving adventure. Our city's zoo has gone through some dark periods but is now one of its crowning jewels. My last visit was great and the animals appeared well cared for.
