Mepkin Abbey is a community of Roman Catholic monks established in 1949 on the site of the historic Mepkin Plantation located on the Cooper River, north of Charleston, South Carolina. Founded by the monks of Gethsemani in Kentucky, the brothers of Mepkin belong to the worldwide Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance popularly known as Trappist. Following The Rule of St. Benedict, the monks at Mepkin Abbey devote their lives to prayer, spiritual study, work and hospitality. Living by the work of their hands, the monks provide a livelihood for themselves and the poor. Mushrooms are a staple item. Visitors are welcome as it's privately owned. Living according to the Rule of St. Benedict, the monks offer hospitality to strangers. To maintain their lives of prayer, silence, privacy and solitude, the monks have a few important requests of all visitors: Upon arrival, please check in at the Reception Center/Gift Shop. Read and abide by all signs. Only two roads are open to the public: the main road which runs from the entrance to the public gardens, and the road which leads to the Reception Center & Store. Please stay on these two roads. Access to the Abbey church is by guided tour only. This access is limited because the church is in the monastic enclosure, the heart of the monastery. No professional photography allowed. No dogs allowed.

Mepkin Abbey is about a 30-minute drive from the cottage. It's a monastery with acres of natural and exquisite cultivated gardens. The monks welcome visitors to worship with them. Come with a picnic, spread your blanket and comestibles on a shady hillock near the river. Divine time.

Wonderful quiet Monastery about 20-25 minutes away. The Monastery is on the Cooper River and I highly recommend this off the tourist radar area in Moncks Corner. Check out their website for the hours they welcome visits. www.mepkinabbey.org
