Escape from the AC into the atrium of the National Building Museum - a good number of free exhibits but the best do require an entry fee. Several activities for kids, but get there early on weekends to avoid waiting.

Absolutely gorgeous building - even if it's just to peak inside. They have a rotating exhibit typically.

A great family-friendly pick that has an exhibit that lets kids build with giant blue blocks. Plus the free courtyard is great for running around. They have major, immersive installations each summer.

Usually they have great kids activities running. This space serves many families as an indoor playground in winter months.
