When the Danes drew up plans for Charlotte Amalie they didn’t take into consideration that the island was hilly - to make up for this the downtown area is scattered with staircases! Perhaps the most well know is the 99 Steps! Take a walk to the top and take in the view of the harbor. On your way back down stroll past Governor’s house and into Veteran’s Park before heading back to town!

One of the most distinguishable landmarks in St. Thomas. The staircase is one of several ‘step-streets’ originally built by the Danes to solve the problem of getting around the Charlotte Amalie’s hilly terrain. The bricks of the steps were brought from Denmark as ballasts in the holds of trade ships. Visitors who walk to the top (actually 103 steps) will find themselves near the foot of more stairs leading to Blackbeard’s Castle, one of the island’s three National Historic Landmarks.

Historic place. Unfortunately the Blackbeard’s Castle still hasn’t reopened after 2017 hurricanes, but if you are in Charlotte Amalie, I would consider to walk 99 steps (actual count is 103).

these historical 99 steps (the actual count is 103) were built from the ballast bricks of the tall ships coming from the old world, which would then return to Europe loaded with products from the islands.

Each step are made of bricks used in the ships as ballast ....and when they no longer needed the weight of the bricks them left them behind 100's of years ago! Fun walk and brings you around the great shopping in downtown St. Thomas
