Punnathurkotta was once the palace of a local ruler, but the palace grounds are now used to house the elephants belonging to the Guruvayoor temple, and has been renamed Anakkotta (meaning "Elephant Fort"). The Anakkotta houses about 50 odd tamed elephants. The compound also has a naalu kettu, a traditional rectangular home with a central courtyard, which belonged to the King of Punnathur. It presently houses a training school for mahouts Punnathur Kotta is about 27 km from Mud Castle.

3 km away from the temple premises is the Guruvayur Devaswom elephant sanctuary -one of the largest elephant sanitarium in the world, also known as Punnathurkotta.
