The monastery, which is dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos,[1] was established during the 15th century, with a cathedral constructed around 1508 and painted with murals by Vicko Lavrov from Dubrovnik in 1517. The monastery remained a seat of the Metropolitans of Herzegovina until the Venetian Empire destroyed it in 1694. The current monastery building was constructed in 1924. Today, the monastery is renowned for its wine production (in particular from the local Vranac and Žilavka grape varieties) and its wine cellars, one of which dates to the 15th century,[2][3] which are a popular tourist attraction. As of late 2016, the monastery remains on the Provisional List for status as a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.[4] On 6 March 2021, the retired Bishop of Zahumlje and Herzegovina (1992–1999), Atanasije was buried in the Chapel of the Resurrection of the Lord in the cemetery of the monastery.[5]

There are many relics in these monasteries from the early medieval period during the rule of the Nemanjic dynasty. Except many interesting sights in a beautiful coastal town of Herceg Novi, there is Savina monastery two kilometers from the town. It is compiled from the three churches – the small Church of the Assumption, the Great Temple of the assumption where the works of the famous Gothic school from Kotor have been kept. There is also the Church of St. Sava on a hill 300 meters from the monastery rest area with the same name. The rest area has an opulent collection of church books, icons, dishes, a graveyard and a beautiful cobbled avenue. We recommend to you to see the oldest Gothic icons in the small church. The Great Temple has one of the most monumental iconostasis. The monastery is placed on a hill south from Herceg Novi, close to the sea and surrounded with lush vegetation. It isn’t known when exactly the monastery complex was founded but it is familiar that Savina monastery was founded in the 15 th century. During the war between the Turks and Venetians over Trebinje and after destruction of Tvrdos , the monks from that monastery had found their shelter in Savina monastery where they brought most part of their relics. There are the remains of Saint Helen and the cross of St. Sava. The monastery has a spectacular view of the Bay of Kotor. The most picturesque words about the beauty and spirituality of the monastery are the words of Nikolaj Velimirovic: The whole Bay of Kotor is beautiful, each part of it is worth of admiration, but one place is the most beautiful, one shelter is the most sacred where the God compiled all the beauty of the world in one small place and that place is Savina monastery.
