192 fighters for freedom and democracy, of the battle of Marathon cremated and buried at the tomb. If it weren't for them, the whole world would be different. Western culture would be different. There is a reconstruction of the battle at the site.

The Tumulus of Marathon, 42 kilometres from Athens, is the burial mound of the 192 brave Athenian heroes who gave their lives during the battle of Marathon in 490 BC, where the heavily outnumbered Athenian army defeated the mighty Persians.
