The Library opened this classic Venetian Renaissance building in March 1900. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the Library is a prime example of turn-of-the-century American architecture. Providence Public Library differs from most, in that it is privately governed and supported, but it serves the people in the best “public” sense of the word. The Alfred Brownell collection of ship models is on permanent display in the Ship Room, and the Paul C. Nicholson whaling collection includes a number of both artistic pieces of scrimshaw and several hundred logbooks from whaling vessels.Guided architectural tours of the historic library are offered every other Tuesday.
