Petworth Town and Shimmings Valley Walk. The charming market and Antiques town of Petworth sits surrounded by the stunning scenery of the South Downs National Park. This small, picturesque town is a renowned centre for art, culture and antiques, with an impressive range of art galleries based here, and over 40 antique dealers dotted along the enchanting streets and cobbled lanes, cheek to cheek with independent shops and boutiques, mouth-watering delicatessens, cafes and restaurants. Each year, the town hosts a series of events which make it a destination not to be missed; the Petworth Fringe and Petworth Music festival, the Petworth Literary Week which often features famous faces from the literary world, an ADFL Antiques & Fine Art Fair, and a Heritage Weekend. Surrounding the town are the walls of the National Trust’s Petworth House and Park, a stunning English stately home built to rival the great European palaces. Beautiful pleasure grounds and sweeping parklands which are the work of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown stretch for over 700 acres. Explore this historic parkland with its ancient trees, walking in the footsteps of artists, and try to catch a glimpse of the majestic herd of fallow deer. Shimmings Valley Walk : A 3.5 mile figure of eight walk from the historic market town of Petworth in West Sussex. The walk gives an opportunity to explore the town, a haven for antique and art collectors, before heading out across the beautiful Shimmings Valley to reach the village of Byworth and returning to Petworth alongside the small meandering river. The views across the Shimmings Valley are stunning throughout the year. The walk has several steady but long gradients throughout and there are a couple of steeper short slopes that can be a little slippery after wet weather. There are several kissing gates throughout plus 6 stiles (a couple of the stiles are tall with mesh wire fencing across so dogs may need a lift over). Some of the fields are likely to be holding horses. Approximate time 1.5 to 2 hours.
