All about Dolgellau

The small town of Dolgellau lies within the boundaries of Snowdonia National Park in northwest Wales at the foothills of Cadair Idris, the highest mountain in southern Snowdonia. Surrounded by rolling hills and mountain peaks, Dolgellau is a favourite starting point for hiking and biking trips, with numerous trails running through the town, making it easy to explore the wild Welsh countryside and mountainous landscape. Dolgellau is an old market town with narrow roads and tall, dark stone and slate buildings housing local restaurants, cafes, and shops selling everything from clothing and outdoor gear to candy and home decor. The town’s rich history, with some ruins dating from the 12th century, is also worth exploring through its many sites, including Cymer Abbey, St Mary’s Church, and the Dolgellau War Memorial.

What are the top things to do in Dolgellau?

Cymer Abbey

Founded in 1198, Cymer Abbey is a few minutes’ drive north of Dolgellau. Although the original abbey was rather small, a substantial amount of the structure remains, including several tall windows, arches, and a tower. Wander around the stone ruins and get a feel for the history of the area.

Ty Siamas

Located in Eldon Square in a 19th-century former market hall, Ty Siamas is the National Centre for Welsh Folk Music. The museum features interactive exhibits that focus on Welsh culture and music, and includes a neat collection of traditional instruments, such as harps, whistles, and flutes. You’ll also find a cafe, bar, and performance auditorium where musical events take place throughout the year.

Snowdon Mountain Railway

One of the best ways to experience the area’s mountains is to hop on the Snowdon Mountain Railway at Llanberis, a little over an hour north of Dolgellau. The journey takes around two hours and takes you over some of the area’s tallest peaks, with gorgeous views of lakes and rivers. Some visitors choose to climb the mountain to the small railway stations on the peaks and then ride the train back down.
