This area is called Shimawara, one of the six former flower districts, and is the oldest of them, so you can see old traditional Japanese-style architecture within walking distance. Located in Miyagawacho, one of Kyoto’s traditional geisha districts, on a quiet lane often considered among the most beautiful streets in the city. The house was originally a teahouse, a more refined type of building than a typical machiya and closely tied to geisha culture. Many original details remain, including a rare Hako-kaidan staircase crafted about 150 years ago. The house now features full floor heating, and accommodates a maximum of four guests to preserve a calm atmosphere.
