All about Paignton
Situated in the middle of Tor Bay, between Torquay and Brixham, Paignton is at the centre of the English Riviera, whose palm-tree-lined coast has been revered for its mild climate and Continental vibe since the early 19th century. The gentry first came here when the Napoleonic Wars prevented them from travelling to the Mediterranean, but the town has a far more inclusive feel today. Its long sandy seafront is bordered by a Victorian esplanade and backed by pretty greens, while its pier is a riot of family-friendly amusements including crazy golf and dodgems.
There’s also a waterpark and a boating lake at nearby Goodrington, and a steam train departing from the centre of town offers scenic journeys overlooking the River Dart; the South West Coast Path reveals stunning views in either direction. Quieter beaches are within easy reach, from the rockpools of Preston Sands to the wooded retreat of Elberry Cove.
What are the top things to do in Paignton?
Paignton Harbour
Built in the 18th century, the harbour harks back to Paignton’s life before tourism, when it was primarily a fishing village. It’s still busy with boats, and an intriguing change of pace from the town’s beach life, with some charming cafes and restaurants to enjoy. In other words, this is a perfect place to simply let the world go by.
Roundham Head
At the southern end of the beach, separating the harbour from Goodrington Sands, this clifftop spot offers sweeping views across the entire reach of Torbay. Sheltered under its pine and sycamore trees, you’ll be able to see all the way to Torquay and Brixham, while at its foot sits the pretty Fairy Cove, a beach of red sand backed by sandstone cliffs.
Oldway Mansion
The former home of a sewing machine magnate, this impressive residence, built in the 1870s, is set in 17 acres of pleasure grounds and embellished with ornate Italianate gardens that are open to the public. The façade of the house is based on the Palace of Versailles.
