Our cosy Studio for 2 nestles on the edge of woodland, yet only 5 mins away from Shaftesbury in Dorset. Wake up to bird song, go for long walks right from the door step, explore many nearby attractions, enjoy a meal or drink on the private terrace. It is possible to have a third person staying. Please indicate 3 people when booking and we will make an airbed, bedding and towels available. There is a charge of £15 per night for a third person. Please be aware that the place is small!
This self contained, modern & comfortable studio annex as its own entrance with private terrace and outdoor space. The property sits in an area of outstanding natural beauty, nestled on the hillside on the edge of ancient woodland. The property is set in 1 acre of wildlife gardens in a quiet hamlet just 5 minutes drive from the historic hill town of Shaftesbury on the border between Dorset and Wiltshire. We are located about 1.5miles outside Shaftesbury in a small hamlet on the edge of the woods. The Studio has a very comfortable King size bed (5 feet wide and 6 feet 6 inches long – 150 x 198 cm), well equipped kitchenette, sitting & dining area, a quite small shower room with basin and toilet, and a walk-in wardrobe/storage. Ideal for walking holidays and short breaks. The studio is well located if you want to visit the End of the Road Festival or Larmer Tree Festival. The kitchenette is well equipped, including full size fridge with freezer compartment, oven with grill, 2 plate induction hob, kettle, toaster and extractor fan. The Studio is ideal for individual travellers, close friends or couples (we welcome all couples!). We're also happy to accommodate parents with babies, but you will need to bring your own cot. Please note that children need to be supervised in the garden! There is a 42" TV with Freesat and DVD player, free Wifi Internet connection (although this can sometimes be slow or disrupted because of our rural location - we can therefore not guarantee the internet service) and stereo speakers for plugging in your iPod or MP3 Player. A selections of DVDs, games and books are available. Outside is a picnic table. You can view the many different birds on the bird feeders, stroll around the wild gardens or sit in one of several quiet benches around the garden. Please note that we basically live in the woods, so there is no view from the Studio terrace. However, guests are welcome to stroll to the end of the garden and enjoy some views from the bench. There is a well stocked village store only 2 miles away in the village of Ludwell, a small grocery store at the petrol station 1 mile away. In Shaftesbury you will find a large Tesco superstore and a lovely town centre with interesting shops and cafés including some very nice food shops. There's a market on Thursday mornings. Shaftesbury is famous for its Gold Hill (from the Hovis Bread ad), it's Abbey, historic buildings and the amazing views across the Blackmore Vale. Salisbury is only 35mins drive to the east and Bath an hour north. An hours drive will also get you to some of the most stunning beaches of the Jurrasic Coast. We have created our house and the Studio as environmentally friendly as possible. We have solar panels to help heat the water and Solar PV to generate electricity. Rainwater is collected and feeds the toilets in the house. We use environmentally friendly cleaning materials and recycle and compost. Please help by separating your recyclables from normal household rubbish. The Studio is extremely well insulated and has central heating. Please note: both the central heating and hot water are heated by an air source heat pump. This is a very efficient and low energy system but works on low temperatures. Therefore please wait 10 minutes between showers, as there may otherwise not be enough hot water available. Similarly the central heating does work on low heat, therefore please don't expect the radiators to be piping hot. The temperature in the Studio should always be comfortable. If not, please let us know as the settings may need adjusting. What makes our place unique is the location. You will be right at the edge of the woods. Deer and badgers sometimes visit the garden and we have an abundance of different birds including Woodpeckers, Long Tail Tits, Jays, Song Thrushes and Bull Finches. You will find some wonderful walks (short and long) right on your doorstep. Yet we are only a 5 minute drive from Shaftesbury, Dorset which has an good selections of independent shops & cafés and a large Tesco. You can park free in Tesco carpark for 3 hours and walk into town from there. The Jurassic Coast (Poole, Studland, Weymouth) or Bath are within an hours drive. We run a non-smoking property, but you are welcome to smoke outside. Just leave your cigarette butts in the receptacle provided outside your entry door. We have a dog ourselves, so know how difficult it is to find accommodation that allows dogs. As the Studio is only a one-room accommodation, it is not suitable for large dogs. But if you do want to bring a small dog, please ask and we will consider it. A surcharge of £5 per night for bringing a dog applies. We also have a cat, Misty. She's basically an outdoor cat, but she likes to manipulate guests to let her into the Studio. You should know this if you're allergic to cats, as we cannot guarantee that the Studio doesn't contain allergens. Also if you do not want her in your room, just chuck her out and keep the windows open only a small gap at night, as otherwise you might receive an unwanted visitor.
My favourite thing about living here is that one can go on walks from 30 minutes to 3 hours through the most glorious country side and woodlands right from our door step. Guests always comment on how well they sleep here because it is so quite and how they like being woken up by bird song. You really are in the midst of nature, yet only a 5 minute drive away from Shaftesbury on the Dorset/Wiltshire border. You can walk into town if you wish. It will take you approximately 40-45 minutes through fields and woodland. Salisbury is a 40 mins and day-trips can be taken to Bath, Stourhead, Poole, Weymouth and the Jurassic Coast.
  • I enjoyed my few days away in the comfortable and peaceful space of the eco hideaway. It is beautifully put together, with modern fittings and views looking out on the garden. The town of Shaftesbury is close by, and I especially loved Park Walk. Gabriela and Neil are friendly and responsive hosts who I would highly recommend. Thank you again for a lovely stay!

Our lovely double height wood and stone barn directly opposite our house is found at the end of a long private drive in glorious countryside. A very comfortable 5ft bed, woodburning stove and lovely views, a perfect relaxing and cosy retreat. Easy access to lots of interesting places. Guests can play tennis and croquet. The Barn sleeps two adults. Ample parking directly next to Barn. Please note the Barn is not suitable for children. NB There are no shops or pubs within walking distance.
The Barn is set at the end of a long drive, well away from any road, in a private 33 acre estate, no noise, no light pollution, just peace and quiet. Although directly opposite the main house, it is quite private. High ceilings, french windows with country views, kingsize double bed (on mezzanine accessed by quite steep stairs), wood burning stove, oak dining table with candles, WIFI (not super fast or that strong), TV DVD player - everything you need for a comfortable weekend or longer stay. It is not a hi-tech/spec barn but it is comfy and in a beautiful setting. Parking directly next to the Barn. Well situated for visits to Bath, Salisbury, the Jurassic Coast, Gold Hill, the new Hauser & Wirth gallery/restaurant in Bruton, Longleat, and much more. Fantastic walking and cycling country. Adjacent to Copse View alpaca walking as seen on Countryfile! One king bed on the mezzanine level in the Barn. Shower with constant hot water. Private BBQ area Tennis Court Croquet Lawn Clay pigeon shooting (extra cost) We are happy to collect guests from nearby railway station at Gillingham, Dorset (where there is Waitrose/Lidl/Asda). Bear in mind nearest pub would then be 30 mins walk. Beautiful unspoilt countryside - watch the deer and buzzards from the windows - and lots of good pubs nearby. Excellent access to lots of lovely places - Bath, Salisbury, Stonehenge, Stourhead, Jurassic Coast. Bed made up with 100% Egyptian cotton linen, towels provided. Gas rings, electric oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, washing machine. NB The steps to mezzanine are quite steep. No bath, only a shower. NB There is wifi but being in the country it is not strong enough to download movies etc
  • A wonderful stay and a welcome change of scenery! The setting is absolutely stunning - thank you for the use of your beautiful grounds for a walk and the tennis court! Space was quiet airy light and lovely wood burner. Has everything you need for a getaway to the countryside. Comfy bed, well equipped kitchen, good shower.

  • The barn is a lovely space in a great location and with fabulous facilities. We spent our weekend hiding away from 'Storm Dennis' and the wood burner and full kitchen made all the difference. We'd have no hesitation in recommending to future guests and we'll definitely be returning. Many thanks Cara.

    Shaftesbury, England, United Kingdom

Our modern Eco Pod is set in it's own secluded wildlife garden area, giving a true nature experience with all the comforts for 2 people. Only 5 mins drive from Shaftesbury, Dorset, and 50 minutes from the Jurassic Coast. Superb country walks! It's normally set up with a king size bed. The Pod is tiny. Think of it as a two berth wooden caravan. It really just has the large bed, there is no table on the inside, but a small kitchen area with sink and hob.
The Pod is a small compact space built as an airtight structure that self regulates temperature and therefore is very comfortable. It's ideal for couples, close friends or one parent and child. It features a large bed (1.80m x 2.20) under a sloping ceiling, a small kitchenette with 2 burner hob and sink with hot & cold water. Please note that there is no table inside. There is literally just the bed and kitchenette. The kitchen is equipped with all essentials including kettle and toaster. You will also find Organic English Breakfast Tea, Organic Coffee, sugar, salt and pepper. There is decking on the outside which gets sunshine most of the day (when the sun shines). A few steps up is a Gazebo with a table and 2 chairs. This is a great space to have an al-fresco meal and watch the wildlife around the pond. There is a small cubicle with a compost toilet inside the Pod. Some people have commented that it is too small for a tall person to have the door closed. Please keep this in mind. Guests also have use of the separate unheated shower shed with hot water. Please note that during the Winter and early Spring the shower shed is not operating. In that case guests are welcome to use the shower in the main house. There is a summer house that houses a fridge freezer, a small oven, two camping chairs and space to store luggage or wet clothing/shoes. The Pod sits in it's own part of the garden, with 2 wildlife ponds. This creates a lovely, secluded garden area for our guests. You basically have your own little wildlife patch here. Ducks often visit the pond early in the morning. Look out for deer, badgers and pheasants. Because of the ponds our grounds are not suitable for small children.
The Pod is located in a small hamlet 1.5miles outside Shaftesbury, Dorset on the edge of ancient woodland. This is a quiet area and the most you will hear is the occasional dog barking, lawnmower or strimmer. However, don't be surprised to be woken by birdsong and to hear owls and other creatures at night. The local village store 'Ludwell Store and Postoffice' is approximately 1.5miles away and can be reached by foot, car or bicycle. The nearest pub is half a mile and the nearest supermarket 1.5 miles.
  • Kind hosts helped me out with a bit of olive oil to fry my supper!

  • Really thoughtful space, great for a quick getaway. Our hosts were lovely and very approachable!

    Yem2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • The pod is really lovely and relaxing! The bed is really big and I had reservations about the compost toilet but it was actually really good!

    Saskia2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • The perfect place to escape into nature, the gorgeous secluded pod was just perfect for our requirements with the added benefit that it was completely eco friendly! We visited Stonehenge and Bath while we were there, only 40 mins and an hour respectively and also took a short trip to Salisbury and Shaftesbury, there is some wonderful culture and history surrounding this area. The pod itself was compact but still completely liveable for the 5 days we were there with a kitchenette in the pod and a fridge and shower just on the other side of the garden. We were most surprised with how warm it was without any heating, especially if you cook in there. The compost toilet was not as scary as we first thought and we got used to it very quickly, as long as your comfortable with hearing the other person going to the loo as it’s inside the pod! All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend it if your wanting to completely switch off and be in nature:)

    Jody2019-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • The pod is in a very secluded part of the property near two ponds. It is a lovely wild garden with lots of natural wildlife. We both had a lovely time and felt very at home at the pod. The pod itself is very clean and well thought out and it feels very cosy to sit there and watch the natural world around you.

  • The cabin was amazing- spacious bed and great amenities- and very clean and well kept. The outside space was outstanding and very relaxing. Thanks Gabriela for a lovely stay!

  • We had a wonderful stay at this cottage. This was our second visit, but this time with 2 adults and 2 kids. The cottage is great. It's set in countryside and gardens with roaming sheep. The bedrooms overlooks the fields and the panoramic views are amazing. The cottage is very well laid out, and ample space for a family of four, with 2 bedrooms a bathroom and an open plan kitchen and Lounge. I couldn't fault this cottage.

  • Lovely little cottage, in a fantastic quiet location. Parking was simple on the road at the back of the property. Was a little chilly when we arrived, but along with the storage heaters, and the real log ‘effect’ fire, which really kicks out some heat, there’s also a convector heater in the bedroom and an electric oil filled radiator for when the weather is particularly cold. The kitchen contains all the basic necessities required for general cooking and eating. The seating in the lounge is comfy and there’s a nice little table to sit and eat any meals at. The bedroom is very cosy and the bathroom, was nice and warm, the only negative would have to be that as the shower is in a bath, it’s not easy to stand under, due to the low ceilings. My husband ended up having to kneel. My husband did manage to bump his head a few times, mainly upstairs where the ceilings are particularly low, but this to be expected for anyone 6 foot tall, when staying in a quaint old thatch cottage. Everything in the cottage was spotlessly clean. There are no street lights outside the cottage, so worth taking a torch (or using a light on a mobile phone), if you’re walking to and from a car during dark evenings. The positive to this, is it being really great to be able to see all the stars, on a clear night, which we can’t see at home due to all the light pollution. There’s a really useful folder on the window ledge in the lounge, containing lots of local information, places to eat, takeaways, walking routes, and places to visit. Places we ate: We had planned to eat at the White Horse Inn, across the road, but unfortunately they aren't serving food between 11th and 29th January 2020 (bad timing), however, drove just over a mile to the centre of Sturminster Newton and ate at The Swan Inn, which had a great menu, including vegan options, so recommend it. Also, ate at Mumbai Bay with some friends, though the initial service for our drinks and the taking of our food order were a little slow, once ordered the food came quickly and was enjoyed by all, so again, recommended. Other than Sturminster Newton, there are some great little villages to visit and for anyone who remembers the little boy pushing his bike up the hill with his delivery of Hovis bread, in the 1970’s, I’d definitely recommend visiting Gold Hill, Shaftsbury.

A homely 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom self contained holiday let on the Dorset / Wiltshire border. Perfect for rest, relaxation and as a base to explore the South West and the English Countryside.
The Farm has been in the family for 3 generations and The Bee House was a fond name for the building where our Grandfather kept his Bee Keeping supplies. Although completely 'Bee Free' now, we kept the name and tradition behind this 2015 renovated self catering cottage. The cottage is entirely self- contained. It's fully equipped with kitchen, linens and everything and anything you may need. We hope you feel that it's a home away from a home. We are next door (completely detached).. so will be there to check you in if required or answer any questions, otherwise you are entirely self contained. Nestled in the beautiful Dorset countryside in the village of Semley, a few miles from the market town of Shaftesbury. It's perfectly situated to explore Dorset, Wiltshire and the South West of England. It's only a short 25 minute drive to Salisbury and Stonehenge or hop on a train and be in Central London within 2.5 hours. Tisbury Train Station is a 10 - 15 minute drive away (we can assist with taxis / pick ups if necessary) Please treat our house as a home away from home. When we're not doing Air BNB our family from out of town stay here.. so please consider yourself a friend with access to DVD's, board games, crib, childrens toys etc. We're happy to answer any questions or help with any needs while you're here. Need a ride / babysitter.. we're happy to accommodate, just let us know. Please note that when calculating your guest numbers - children occupying beds will be charged for at the nightly rate. There is also a sturdy travel cot available with linen free of charge to use for babies and small toddlers. Strictly no pets thank you. Smoking is strictly forbidden inside the house.

  • We stayed atJudi's place for 3 nights in February and had an absolutely amazing time. Despite of not the best weather the place provided everythig we wanted, piece, tranquility and outstanding views from the house. Judi welcomed us with a delicious lemon cake and lots of tips on what to do in the area. The place is very cosy and looks even better than on photos. View from the property is outstanding and you can enjoy it over a nice breakfast from the kitchen area or a glass of wine from the living room :) Car is definitely needed. There is a small local shop in 2 mins drive but the selection is limited. If you want to do bigger shopping you need to go to town (10 min). There are lots of nice walks around so you can explore nature and relax. Overall wonderful experience and highly recommended. Thank you Judi and Andre for your hospitality.

  • What a wonderful five-night stay we had at the Beehouse! We were met by Judi, who showed us around and provided lots of information about Semley and surrounds. The Beehouse is comfortable and spacious, with everything a family on holiday needs, including board games and children’s books. The bungalow has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a nicely appointed kitchen, dining room, spacious lounge and a fabulous outdoor area, which would be perfect in summer. Everything worked as it should, including flawless wi-fi. The Beehouse is surrounded by nature and silence - just wonderful! We spotted pheasants wandering about each morning. The bungalow is a mile or so from Semley village - a really lovely walk. Do visit the local cafe and the dairy. We walked to the Donheads (two local villages) along quiet country lanes (you could take walking tracks but in winter they are very muddy). There is a big Tesco in Shaftesbury (and other supermarkets) for your shopping needs. Finally, the Beehouse is perfectly located for drives further afield, for instance only 30 miles or so from Stonehenge. If you have time, consider walking to Stonehenge from Woodhenge, following the National Trust designated walk. It was an absolute highlight of our holiday.

  • This is fantastic place with all needed facilities/amenities (and more) and breathtaking views! Location is also great! Judi is an amazing host, quick responder, kind and easy to communicate with. She even left milk and a home made cake to welcome us! We travelled with our 3 month old baby and he slept very well in the cot provided. We shall come back!

We have 2 rooms for you to choose from that share a private shower room. We only let both rooms out at the same time if guests are in the same group. Bedroom 1 - King size bed or can be made into a twin, TV, tea/coffee making facilities, hairdryer. This room is situated next to the shower room. Bedroom 2 - King Size bed, T.V, tea/coffee making facilities, hairdryer. This room is in the eves and has narrow and steep stairs so might not be suitable for some guests. There is a door separating the guest area from our own bedrooms so that guests have a little more privacy at night. We usually open this door and head downstairs ourselves around 7.30am during term time and 8am at weekends/holidays. An extra mattress can be squeezed in to the loft room under the eaves if absolutely necessary but for 3 persons in 1 room an extra £20 will be charged, this covers the laundry, cleaning and breakfast. We are a family with 2 children, 2 dogs, 1 cat and 2 rabbits. Our home was originally a brewery so has many quirky features and includes the stream that was used to brew the beer running through our garden. The pub next door (open all day) has recently been refurbished to a high standard...not far to go for meals, a coffee or a local ale! The village called Fontmell Magna is a typically beautiful Dorset village with many pretty thatched cottages. We have 1 school, 1 pub, 1 church, a beautiful village shop/tea rooms/postoffice and the most stunning countryside all around. There are many beautiful walks close by which include the Melbury Downs. This is also an area popular with cyclists. Shaftesbury is 7 minutes away with Gold Hill a pretty attraction made famous by the Hovis Advert. The Jurassic coast and the historic town of Bath can be reached in under an hour. There are also many other attractions and places to visit within easy reach, Longleat Safari Park is just 35 minutes away. We are ideally placed for events being held at Springhead (a 5 minutes walk up the road) and The Larmer Tree Gardens. The nearest stations are 25 minutes away but collection could be available if prearranged and convenient. The bus stops right by the pub and has services to Shaftesbury, Blandford Forum and beyond. A basic breakfast is included and we offer you tea/coffee, juice, fruit, cereal, toast. Please let me know the evening before what time you would like to have breakfast. During the week I have to get kids off to school so I could prepare your breakfast before or after this time. Breakfast is also available at the pub from 8am...This would need to be booked in advance so please let us know the evening before if you want this option. Check in is from 3pm, check out is 10am but we can be flexible if no other guests are booked in and is pre arranged. It would be helpful if you could let us know a rough time of arrival as I am often popping out to do school runs and children's activities. EXTRAS CHILD (in cot) £5 per night Extra Mattress in loft room £20 If the 2nd room is used by children this will still be charged at the full room rate USE OF WASHING MACHINE/DRYER - £2 per load Please let us know in advance if you want to eat at the pub next door so we can book a table for you as it can get busy at weekends. For more information on meal prices etc please look at The Fontmell's website. Please do contact us with any questions...

Katie’s place is located in Fontmell Magna, North Dorset, England, United Kingdom. The village gastro-pub (2mins walk) serves excellent food from lunchtime and in to the evening. If you prefer to stay in and cozy down for the evening, the local independent shop (5 mins walk) sells groceries and a small selection of wines and spirits. Venturing out: you can walk footpaths around the local fields from your front door, but drive for under 10 mins and you can walk on the rolling hills, explore the wide open spaces of National Trust protected countryside and, on a clear day, enjoy uninterrupted views all the way to Wales. About half an hour away and you’ll be wandering deep in the beautiful New Forest or Cranborne Chase AONB. Or perhaps cycling the Dorset Trailway, visiting National Trust and English Heritage properties including Stourhead and the renowned Kingston Lacy. 15 minutes drive would allow you to explore and shop the quaint and well preserved market towns of Shaftesbury, Blandford Forum and Sturminster Newton. 40 - 45 minutes further away and you can enjoy Poole, Bournemouth and Salisbury, with the Isle of Purbeck being about 45 minutes drive away.
  • We were so happy with our little stay at Katie and Graham's. They were so responsive to messages, directed us in when we got lost in the dark, spared some bread for us to have with the eggs they kindly provided. Their cottage is so cosy and comfy, everything you need is there. They were very friendly as well. The location was lovely, the village itself gorgeous and some beautiful walks right on the door step, we also found a lovely farm shop a 10 minute drive away called the Udder Farm shop which was fabulous. The village shop was also very well stocked and the owner very friendly. It was just what we needed and wouldnt hesitate to go back next time we need a weekend away from it all.

    Emma2020-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic location tucked away in a quaint Dorset village. All the communication ahead of our stay was spot on and we were greeted by Graham when we arrived. The place was very well kitted out and there were some lovely touches on arrival including fresh local milk and eggs, homemade cakes and a bottle of fizz chilling in the fridge which was a lovely surprise. The bed was big and super comfortable and the bathroom is very clean, modern and toasty warm with its under floor heating. Just a couple of minutes walk down the lane is the local pub/restaurant which serves really excellent food. Would recommend this cottage if you want a base to explore the local area. Great value for money! Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Newly fitted out to a high standard. Kitchenette, wet room with WC, living room/diner and bedroom with double bed, perfect for a couple or lone traveller. Please note ceilings are low on one side of building with kitchen and wet room. The Saxon hill top town is within 15 minutes walking distance with the famous Gold Hill, Abby Ruins and Park Walk with stunning views over the Blackmore Vale. Off road private parking in carport. On main routes in and out of town. Some traffic noise.
Formally a double garage converted into a comfortable self contained living space with everything you’ll need for a pleasurable stay. Private from the main house with covered parking right outside the front door.
We are walking distance from the small but vibrant high street of Shaftesbury. The town has monthly markets and a great fringe festival in the summer months.
  • We had a lovely weekend stay here. The space is clean, cosy, and well kitted out for its size. Only one note I would add is the ceilings are quite low so you might find yourself ducking if you're a giant like myself, should be fine for all normal sized people though! Would recommend the place to others.

  • Stayed with Ruth and the team (two dogs) for the long term. She is so welcoming, the rooms are gorgeous, the pooches are great entertainment and loveable (also listen to their momma and well behaved if you're not keen on dogs), Ruth is a queen in the kitchen and had many chats in the evening with her over a gin or two in the recliner by the fire watching The Chase! There's plenty available in the kitchen for tea/coffee breakfast, room for parking and Ruth is always available for a chat but also gives you your privacy if you prefer (for a nap in my case!). Highly recommended and hopefully see her in the new year!

  • I stayed at millview cottage throughout June for work. Pippa was a wonderful host who helped us out everytime we needed it without fail. The cottage is in a beautiful and quiet place with a beautiful interior and a lovely private garden. The cottage was sparkling clean when I arrived and had all the facilities I needed so that my evenings and weekends could be spent relaxing. The location was ideal for what I needed, the commute was 10-15 minute drive, large supermarkets were about 10 minutes away with a more local supermarket a 2 minute drive away and there was plenty of sightseeing to be done less than an hours drive away on the weekends. I would definitely stay at millview cottage again and would recommend to anyone.

  • Dan & Cindy’s Garden Room is a beautiful little piece of heaven. We can thoroughly recommend staying there. Dan and Cindy go well beyond to help, even to the point of providing lactose free milk without me actually asking for it because they heard I was lactose intolerant. It was a lovely touch. The whole place is spotless, warm and friendly. Enjoy your stay. Dave & Jenny from the Isle of Man.

  • This was the best stay and experience I've had while using airbnb. The room is really thoughtful prepared to have everything you might need. The hosts, Dan and Cindy are genuinely friendly and helpful so it was a very good atmosphere during our stay. Thank you!

The vintage hideaway is a self contained annexe attached to my house. It is light airy and comfortable, you have a bed sitting room , kitchenette and shower room. There is access from the bedroom to a seating area on the deck at the back over looking an area of outstanding natural beauty. The house is close to lovely walks and the historic town of Shaftesbury with a variety of cafes , individual shops and pubs, and of course Gold Hill.
The area of Cranborne Chase to the south and east of the house is currently awaiting international dark sky reserve status for the star gazing enthusiasts. There is also a small airfield locally offering wing walking! and a great lunch.
  • Would highly recommend Jo's place. Cosy and quirky with great views - the ideal hideaway! We also took advantage of the massage from Jessie which was great. Thank you

    Leanne2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Jo's will always be special to us. We got engaged just before arriving at Jo's for the evening. We decided against going out for a fancy meal, and instead ordered a take-away to The Vintage Hideaway (there's only one that would deliver to the location but it was delicious!) and played a board game (our own). It was the most perfect evening, made even more perfect by being completely off grid due to lack of phone signal. The view from the bedroom was absolutely spectacular, even on the overcast day we stayed. The croissants were an adorable touch and we loved having those in bed the following morning admiring the view. The only thing to be aware of is the complete lack of phone signal, it's great if that is what your looking for but the WiFi was also pretty rubbish, only getting signal right by the front door. Despite the poor signal and WiFi, we absolutely loved our stay at The Vintage Hideaway and we will, for sure, be back!!

    Catherine2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • A really memorable stay. Cozy cabin style place in an awesome rural setting with lots of nice touches inside.

  • We had an absolutely wonderful weekend at Jo's place- what a beautiful find!! Jo was fantastic at communicating and was very accommodating with our last minute changing of timings when visiting for our friends wedding. Her directions were clear and easy to follow (even in the dark!). The vintage hideaway is lovely and all the thoughtful little touches were very much appreciated. It's a shame we didn't have the best weather to enjoy the beautiful terrace area but the views are amazing. Would highly recommend- thanks for a great stay.

    Claire2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Jo’s place was beautiful and in a lovely location. She was really welcoming and had great advice for places to visit in the area. There were lots of lovely extra touches, the croissants left for breakfast were particularly appreciated! We would definitely stay again.

The Milk Parlour is a charming thatched building in the highest village in Dorset. The fusion of traditional and modern themes in the building make for a comfortable and cosy feel. Wonderful views and walking from the village ensure your stay with us will be memorable. Our dog friendly accommodation means your four footed friend can join you as you explore the delights of North Dorset's rolling hills. Steve and Sara look forward to welcoming you.
As you will see from the aerial photo, our house is opposite the Milk Parlour but you are sufficiently far away to be quite private. We will respect your privacy but equally love to meet our guests and give nuggets of advice on the local area if required. The accommodation is open plan living/dining/kitchen with a separate bedroom. The section with the glazed doors attached to the Milk Parlour is our office and we do wander back and forth from time to time but will leave you in peace. Part of the garden is available for your use but you have your own sitting area directly outside which enjoys the sunshine all day. The Wifi is very fast and you have access to our netflix account. There is no bath but a spacious shower. As well as the listed amenities you also have a dishwasher. The Milk Parlour is completely self contained and when we are not around you will be given a code for the key safe before you arrive.
Ashmore is famous for being the highest village in Dorset and enjoys the fabulous views you would expect. It is an active rural community with working arable farms. The village sits on Cranborne Chase which is hoping to become the UK’s first AONB to achieve dark sky recognition and there are only currently 11 of these in the world.- so you will need a torch! We are within ten minutes of Shaftesbury with the famous Gold Hill which featured in the historic Hovis advert. Shaftesbury is a charming hilltop town with pubs , coffee shops and independent retailers . We are well placed for Salisbury, Bath, Poole and the Jurassic coast. Other places of interest include Stourhead, Longleat and Stonehenge There are some beautiful secluded beaches around 45mins away by car and other landmarks all within a short drive. We are blessed with great dining pubs in the area so do some internet surfing before you arrive and there is a list of our favourites in the information file. N.B There is no pub or shop in the village

  • Had my own use of the upstairs of Jeni’s bungalow which consists of two bedrooms and a bathroom. The area was accessed via a staircase from the main living area. Jeni was a great host and very flexible with my antisocial check in/out times!

  • Jeni was so welcoming. My stay in the 'attic' was cosy, comfy and clean and quirky! I would recommend it but please be aware it has low ceilings and a spiral staircase.

  • The attic is just lovely and you are very private there. Jeni is very communicative and helpful! Great stay!

    Eva2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • What to say? Because airbnb is peer to peer, must people are quite gentle in their reviews. So it can be quite hard to tell how honest people are being. The reviews for Jeni's place are completely accurate. It's lovely. Cost, clean, everything you'd want and Jeni is, by far, the best Airbnb host I've ever had. She's there for a chat if you want it but not in your face. I felt so comfortable there. Just lovely.

    Christine2019-08-07T00:00:00Z
  • Really enjoyed my stay with Jeni. It was my first experience of an Airbnb, I booked it as a cost effective option close to Parajet where I was doing a 6 day course. Jeni was a great host, she couldn't do enough to make me feel comfortable and welcome. The facilities were perfect, clean and had loads of really nice touches to make my stay a real pleasure. Would love to stay with Jeni again and definitely recommend her as a perfect host! Thanks.

Recently converted former hay barn in farm courtyard in deepest North Dorset far from the madding crowds.
An extremely comfortable base from which to explore all that Dorset and Wiltshire have to offer. We are midway between the market towns of Shaftesbury (historic Gold Hill) and Sturminster Newton. Accommodation is light, airy and newly decorated. The rear windows of the property look across the owner's organic vegetable gardens and glasshouse. There is no light pollution, enabling you to see the stars at night and expansive daytime views. No traffic noise disturbs this tranquility as Swallows Barn is at the end of a ‘No Through’ Lane, together with the owner’s farmhouse. The nearest village stores and pubs are 3 miles away in Child Okeford and Iwerne Minster. Stonehenge, Longleat, Stourhead, the spectacularJurassic coast and many National Trust properties are all within very easy reach. Would suit couple who enjoy a quiet night's sleep after a busy day exploring. Good base from which to cycle quiet backwaters, or walk the abundant footpaths.
We like to share our special little corner of Dorset with guests who wish to experience peace and tranquility, away from any traffic noise and neighbours! We are very rural though so please don’t expect convenience stores, public transport or satellite TV but our WiFi is fast! Turn off your gadgets and enjoy the surrounding nature!

No thrills but clean and cosy and the single bed very comfortable. The bathroom is clean and airy. Altogether a really great place to stay and sample the atmosphere and a very fine Welsh single malt. It was a pleasure to come home after a day’s exploring and relax in the comfortable, quiet and spacious accommodation. They provided milk , tea, coffee and biscuits to get us started .. and a beautifully wrapped box of chocolates for my birthday. A lovely touch! The Annex is an easy walk into Shaftesbury with its famous Gold Hill. Check out the Shaftesbury Arts Centre for a variety of entertainment. Only a short drive is Sherborne... what a town! ... and of course the Dorset coast. We will certainly visit again. Thank you Ruth and Dennis.

The Retreat is a one bedroom self-contained, peaceful, comfortable and well furnished annex apartment to the ground floor of a large house, located in Donhead St Andrew on the Wiltshire and Dorset border. The property is 4 Miles from Shaftesbury, and 16 miles from the world famous cathedral city of Salisbury.
  • Louis was a great host. The place was well furnished and in a great location. Highly recommend and would definitely stay here again.

    Matthew2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely flat, very clean and all appliances that you would need. Lovely courtyard garden and peaceful environment.

    Sonia2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • Louis is very helpful and met us on arrival. The Retreat was very clean and comfortable and is well located for Shaftesbury and the Wiltshire villages. Very much enjoyed our stay

    Peter2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely place, as other have said- don't underestimate the steps. Getting your stuff down is easy but dragging it back up again was more difficult. Nice to have an oven and washing machine to use should we of needed too and a fridge! Fully read the directions from Louis, took us about 4 attempts going up and down the road continually turning around to find the turning. The image on Google maps is a lie haha other than that absolutely beautiful!!

    Ruby2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • The Retreat was a perfect find for us as a base to explore the area a little on a short break. Louis was a very welcoming host and his set up has been very thoughtfully put together, providing home from home comforts. We certainly hope to return again!

    David2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • What’s a place, where to start... Louis welcomed us in person and showed us the accommodation, the communication was perfect from the start to the end. You’ll be amazed by the driveway and the garden, and nothing can beat the view!!! We’ve enjoyed our stay so much, the cat Jess and the dog Dora have shown us the best hospitality in Dorset!! We enjoyed playing with them before going for our adventure! The location is perfect if you want to explore Dorset and Wiltshire! There are a few lovely pubs around, we have tried The Grove Arms where they do yummy food in big portions! The accommodation itself is clean and comfortable, Louis even provided a welcome pack! Thank you Louis for our lovely stay!! Highly recommended this place to anyone who would like to explore the beautiful surroundings!!

    Mathew2019-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • Well appointed self contained accomodation. Beautifully clean and lovely garden to enjoy.

    Rebecca2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • This was our first Airbnb experience! We were impressed. Spotlessly clean with everything you could possibly need and a lovely welcome pack. There are a few steps to apartment but they're not too steep and there are handrails. The little courtyard off the bedroom is cute and when the sun is shining it's lovely to sit there with a cuppa! Louis's garden is very pretty with beautiful views. Ah and Louis's little dog is very sweet and incredibly well behaved.

Delightful single-storey rural North Dorset barn conversion. Set in 10 acres of lovely grounds on the edge of Fontmell Magna Village. Wood burning stove and en-suite. Shaftesbury 4 miles.
Fontmell Magna is a lovely Dorset village with a local shop and an excellent pub. There are also many superb pubs in the surrounding villages.
  • If you are looking for a country cottage with all the home comforts this place will not disappoint. We have had a wonderful Christmas in Fontmell Magna. Our expectations were exceeded on this occasion. Both of the hosts were so welcoming, helpful and the little touches like fresh eggs, cakes, treats and more were thoughtful. Amazing local walks - up the road opposite pub and up past mill pond and the onto path going up the hill was great - despite getting soaked in a down pour .. but the lovely village pub was a welcome refuge from the weather. Ringstead Bay is worth a visit for a coastal walk.

    Chloe2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • A great place to stay with everything we needed, no complaints and a nice village with excellent pub - well recommended

    Antonia2019-04-22T00:00:00Z
  • This is a very cosy place to stay with instant access to the Dorset countryside and plenty of highlights to visit nearby - from Thomas Hardy’s home to Monkey world. The accommodation is clean and quiet, and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay over New Year. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a relaxing country retreat that’s not too far off the beaten track.

    Vivien2019-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is very cosy, clean and well equipped. The beds are very comfortable too. The garden is enclosed and a great place for dogs as there are fantastic walks from the property and 5 mins away by car, up on the Downs overlooking Blackmore Vale. The Fontmell pub, in the village, serves delicious food and allows dogs. The cottage is perfectly situated on the Dorset Downs where you get the most spectacular views from the top of Fontmell Down and Melbury Beacon.

    Jan2018-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • Arrived at a very beautiful cottage in a beautiful village. Kitchen well equipped. Nice space for he dog and a wonderful setting. Very much recommend!!!

  • Recommended. We spent a wonderful Easter weekend here. The cottage is delightful: warm, comfortable and well equipped. Lots of nice touches to welcome us. The local area is very attractive. Visited Kingston Lacey, Shaftesbury, Studland Beach, Corfe Castle, Portland and Weymouth - all within easy striking distance for trips out. Restaurant recommendations at the Fontmell and Cricketers were both great.

Nestled in the heart of the Cranborne Chase, The Old Forge is the perfect retreat for those looking to appreciate the slower pace of life. The 18th Century former Carriage and Wheelwrights workshops have been transformed to create two charming two self-catering cottages with unique appeal. Constantly evolving, recent years have seen the introduction of Sam and Mabel the Shepherd's Huts embracing the 'glamping' revolution.
The Smithy lies just across the yard from the main house and was the original Blacksmiths forge. It still retains many of the original features and blacksmiths artefacts and has made a wonderful conversion with views across the village green to Fontmell Down. It also has its own private sitting area under a Pergola entwined with grapes and honeysuckle. Accommodation consists of a sitting room/dining room with wood burning stove, steps down to a kitchen and bathroom. Steps up from the sitting room lead to the galleried double bedroom. A perfect honeymoon retreat! Dogs are allowed in the Smithy, for £25 per dog. Please let us know in advance if you are planning on bringing your four legged friend. And please being bedding, towels, bowels etc. All we ask is no dogs on the furniture, and please be aware that we have horses, donkeys, chickens, dogs and a cat on site!
The Old Forge is situated in the picturesque village of Compton Abbas which is just a 5 minute drive from our famous little town of Shaftesbury. Walks can be taken directly from the door, up onto National Trust Downland.
  • We loved our stay in this cosy and quirky place and would very much like to return. Tim, Lucy and Sophie were wonderful hosts and we have no hesitation in recommending the Smithy as an excellent base to explore a beautiful part of the country.

  • I cannot think of anything I would change. The location enables you to explore pretty much all of Dorset within an hour. It is peaceful and very comfortable, I am sure there are many fine places to eat close-by but it was much nicer to light the fire and cook something to stay in with. Beautiful surroundings, cosy accommodation, great hosts and a soundtrack of owls and woodpeckers...

    Peter2019-02-22T00:00:00Z

  • This is a wonderful and cosy place to stay. Well equipped and really clean. The wood burner and shower are a real feature. There are many other ‘nice’ touches! Charlie and Ali are great hosts too. We would highly recommend this as a place to relax and enjoy the Dorset countryside.

    Katie2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Would recommend 100% My partner and I are already working out/considering when we could return for longer. Beautiful place to stay both inside and out, even in February/March with bits of wind and rain still incredible. Woke up early one day to travel to Lulworth Cove for the sunrise, spent time in front of the log burner, went on local walks. Don't hesitate just book!

    Alex2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great space, very comfortable, and spotlessly clean with lots of thoughtful extras. The Cartshed is modern (fantastic shower!), but cosy (we loved the wood fire). We stayed there for a family wedding and couldn't have been happier with our choice! An oasis of peace, quiet and calm during an amazingly busy, joyous and hectic weekend of celebrations. Charlie and Ali truly were the best of Super Hosts - thank you both !

    Caroline2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • We came to stay at the Cartshed after a very long January! We just needed to get away somewhere peaceful and relaxing - it did not disappoint. Charlie and Ali are the perfect hosts and the local area is a perfect place get away from everything. I simply cannot praise everything enough!

    Lauren2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I stayed at the Cartshed to recover from the Christmas rush. We had a lovely stay, relaxing in front of the fire and going for walks. The place was clean, well equipped and comfortable. We'd recommend staying at the Cartshed to anyone who likes local farm shops, long walks and getting away from the busyness of life.

    Seamus2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • A really stylish property in a good location to explore North Dorset. Friendly helpful hosts. Good value for money.

    Robert2019-12-11T00:00:00Z
  • I simply cannot fault our stay at The Cartshed. The pictures do not do this beautiful place justice! The Cartshed was well equipped, very clean and the decor was very nice and luxurious. The Christmas tree was a nice touch too! Charlie and Ali came down to greet us on arrival explained a few things to us and gave us very good recommendations on what to do around the surroundings areas, although they had created a clear book for guidance too. The shower was very lovely and the fire was a perfect feature for late November/December nights. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone who wants a quiet weekend away. Thank you Charlie and Ali we hope to return in the new year! :)

    Emilie2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is absolutely stunning, and looked just as good as the photos show (if not better). The kitchen had every amenity you could need, and was stocked with tea, coffee, salt, pepper and cleaning products. The bathroom was spotlessly clean and we were provided with towels and a bathrobe. We loved the fireplace and sat around it for most of our trip as it was so warm and cosy. Check-in and check-out was easy through a lock box. Though the cottage was close to other homes, we still felt very secluded. There are pubs within driving distance and there is also a massive Tesco not far so you don't have to worry about shopping before you go. We would definitely go again.

Bedroom 1 - King size bed or can be twin, TV, tea/coffee making facilities, hairdryer. This room is situated next to the shower room. Bedroom 2 - King Size bed, T.V, tea/coffee making facilities, hairdryer. This room is in the eaves and has narrow and steep stairs so might not be suitable for anyone that's very tall or has mobility issues. There is a door separating the guest area from our own bedrooms so our guests have a little more privacy at night. We usually open this door and head downstairs ourselves around 7.30am during term time and 8am at weekends/holidays. An extra mattress can be squeezed into the loft room under the eaves if absolutely necessary but an extra £20 will be charged, this covers the laundry, cleaning and breakfast. We are a family with 2 children, 2 dogs, 1 cat and 2 rabbits (free range). A basic beakfast is included and we offer you tea/coffee, juice, fruit, cereal, toast. It would be helpful if you could let us know a rough time of arrival as I am often popping out to do school runs etc. EXTRAS CHILD (in cot) £5 per night Extra Mattress in loft room £20 If the 2nd room is used by children this will still be charged at the full room rate USE OF WASHING MACHINE/DRYER - £2 per load Please let us know in advance if you want to eat at the pub next door so we can book a table for you as it can get busy on weekends. For more information on meal prices etc please look at The Fontmell's website. Please do contact us with any questions...

  • Mary Anne was a lovely hostess; she made our stay so enjoyable, booking a table at the pub next door prior to our arrival. The beds were comfortable and the breakfast was delicious. The Black Lab, Buddy, was adorable; greeting us with a huge toothy smile every time we walked in. Tonka, the Border Terrier was just as affectionate, but without the smile! Thanks

  • Such a cozy quaint place to stay in close proximity to all that you need for a few days away. Great dog walks close by followed by a roaring fire to relax in for a cozy warm evening.

    Stuart2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • We had wonderful stay at the townhouse. It was very atmospheric and authentic. We loved spending long evenings in front of the fire place. Caroline was a very wonderful and accommodating host. She left some treats & poo bags for our dog Matt. She also gave us plenty of privacy. It was a lovely experience staying right in the old city centre. All amenities are close and some wonderful walks near by. Kitchen very well equipped and lovely big bath in the bathroom. If you are visiting with a big dog please bare in mind staircase is really steep and slippery. Our one couldn’t tackle them but was happy enough downstairs.
