Places to stay in Portsalon
One of a handful of old thatched cottages still left in Donegal. This property nestles in a little hollow, in a peaceful rural setting with beautiful surroundings and a lake within walking distance.
This pretty 150 year old cottage, which has been sensitively restored with many original features retained, has woodburning stoves in both the living room and dining room/kitchen. It is situated in one of the most remarkable and beautiful landscapes in Ireland. If you want to take a step back in time, experience what rural Ireland was, and get away from it all this is the perfect place for you. It is ideal for enjoying the great outdoors before spending relaxing evenings by the fire.
The Fanad Peninsula where the property is situated is an unspoilt scenic area with coastal drives, golden beaches, hedged country lanes and lakes and rivers. The area is good for fishing, golf, walking and relaxing. There are numerous beaches within a 10 minute drive including Balllyhiernan surfers beach and surf school, Drumnacraig beach and Ballymastocker beach. Donegal is home to many Blue Flag beaches, so guests can rest easy in the knowledge that the water and sand are in pristine condition. Fanad lighthouse is a signature point on the Wild Atlantic Way that overlooks the North Atlantic Ocean and only a 15 minute drive from the cottage. Other local attractions include Glenveagh Caste, Letterkenny, Rathmullan, Ramelton, Tory Island, Doe Castle, Downings, and Ards Forest Park which are all within a 45 minute drive. County Donegal also received the honor of being named the coolest place on the planet for 2017 by National Geographic Traveller.
  • What an amazing place! We weren’t entirely sure what to expect but loved this cottage so much. We could walk to a pub about 25 minutes away and it really felt like getting away from the modern world but still had the necessities. Would love to come back and soon!

  • Danny's cottage is a gorgeous home looking out over stunning scenery. It is so comfortable and clean and beautifully decorated - it was absolutely relaxing! We have two toddlers and Danny had provided a travel cot for us. The fireplace was very comforting to come home to after a long day out. We really enjoyed our stay and got a lovely chance to really relax! The town of Buncrana was only 10 minutes away and it had everything we needed. There is plenty to do in the area. We would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to get away for a few days or wanting to explore a hidden gem. It was an absolute pleasure dealing with Danny and so were the few conversations we had during our stay.

    Robin2019-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • Incredible! That describes the home, the views, the area, and most of all the host! Danny is extremely gracious and hospitable and a true delight to engage in conversation. He is extremely knowledgeable about Ireland, and his home is beautiful. Highly recommended

  • Brilliant stay at Alice and Richard’s house, beautiful space, really clean with lots of thoughtful touches (travel cot, high chair, toys for the baby, a water bowl for the dog and a welcome basket of nibbles). It is deceptively large and on the whole comfortably fit the 9 adults, 1 child and a dog we had staying; the one exception would be the living room which was a little bit smaller but very cosy. 10 mins drive from the beach and an open fire to heat you up after. Alice answered my questions very promptly. We will definitely be back!

    Hannah2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • The house is perfect for family’s and friends. Lots of space. And all the extras were in the house. Nothing was forgotten. We would definitely recommend the house 💕

    Simon2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • Spent just one evening here with the family. It’s a part of Donegal we have never visited and the bay/beach was worth the trip alone. House excellent and homely and host very accommodating - knowing we had children with us they had toys etc out for them, along with welcome pack. Great stay. Thanks

    Jaime2019-10-31T00:00:00Z
  • This house has everything you need for your vacation: a huge living room with integrated, well-equipped kitchen, a separate fireplace / TV room, a toilet and a room with two single beds on the ground floor. Upstairs there is another bathroom with shower and toilet, a room with double bed, another with double bed plus a double bunk bed and a third double bed room with its own small shower room and toilet. All double beds have, but usual for German guests unfamiliar, a single (shared) duvet. The house is located on a quiet side street, there is room for two cars and behind the house there is a garden.

Recently refurbished with all modern amenities, sleeps 5/6 with onsite parking. A short drive from Fanad Lighthouse, Glenveagh National Park and Letterkenny town. This is a quiet cottage located beside a working farm. There is a wood-burning stove in the main room and guests receive a fire starter pack which includes firelighters, a bucket of coal and a basket of logs.
  • Brilliant location and the cottage had everything we needed to make our stay that much better. Really well thought out.

    Kieran2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • The house was really excellent. Cosy and roomy at the same time, with a warm decor. Included great touches like the fireplace and board games, for when the weather wasn’t as good as we’d hoped. Great location, reasonable price and perfect host. Thanks Stephanie.

    Ronan2019-07-13T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our time in the cottage. Portsalon is a beautiful location and you are only a 10 minute walk to the village pier. The cottage is set on lovely grounds, and is adjacent to a working farm, which adds to the country atmosphere. Waiting for us when we arrived, was a fire set in the stove, and tea, coffee and fresh milk in the fridge to start our evening with. The cottage is vet bright and cheery. There is ample space and it is very comfortable. The kitchen/pantry is very cosy and the eating area seats four. We had a hiccup along the way and Stephanie quickly responded to our concern and addressed the situation. There is no WiFi but we had good 4G coverage through Vodafone. We would recommend the Cosy Cottage.

    Connor2019-03-24T00:00:00Z

Its exactly as described by Stephanie. Our first visit to Portsalon and we found the local people extremely friendly and the scenery fantastic. We hope to return again.

This cottage is located in the heart of the village of Portsalon about a 5 min walk to the beach , golf club, bar and restaurant. This is an ideal base for enjoying the local amenities and exploring the beautiful surrounding area.
  • This was a warm cosy house which was spotlessly clean. We requested an early check in and Pat and Kate were happy to oblige. They both arrived later to bring scones and light the fire, which was a lovely added bonus. Fanad is a lovely part of Ireland and I would recommend this air b&b without hesitation.

  • Kate and Pat were such good hosts. The house is gorgeous, the beds so comfortable. Their tips on local sightseeing and general additional little touches like scones and milk, were so nice!! Will definitely recommend this house :)

  • Very private settings, and spacious dwelling. Location is excellent to stores/ beaches & golf course

    Paula2019-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great place to stay if you want a very clean, spacious, practical space, particularly for families. The house is set in its own grounds back from a local road and it is so quiet you can hear the sheep grazing at rear fence line. The house is a few minutes gentle walk to a beautiful long sandy beach with Portsalon Golf course next to the beach. There are no negatives to mention about this property and Kate and Pat are great hosts, providing lots of local knowledge to enhance your stay.

    David2019-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely big house. Perfect for families. Close to beach and shop. We really enjoyed our stay in Port Salon. Delicious scones upon arrival. Milk, tea and lots of other bits available also. Would recommend staying here.

  • Geoffrey's house is certainly one of the more luxurious air bnbs we have stayed in. The house is big and beautiful and has everything you could possibly need. It was spotlessly clean too. Geoffrey and Erin welcomed us like family and gave us great tips. Portsalon is a beautiful part of the country with a fabulous beach. The house is very close to everything. Dont hesitate to book...you won't be disappointed!

The apartment has a kitchen/dining/living area with a sofa bed, as well as a double bedroom and a shower-room with WC. Well equipped kitchen. Washing machine & tumble dryer also. Central heating. Basics such as tea, coffee, sugar, salt & pepper and cooking oil provided. 'The Nook' accommodates 3 people, though unfortunately we don't have facilities in place for babies or toddlers.
#CoolDonegal The area is very scenic with hills and coastal inlets. You're only 10 mins from the nearest beach and there are SO many beautiful beaches in the area. This is the perfect location for hill-walking, cycling or simply enjoying leisurely strolls on the beach. Organised activities available in the locality include kayaking, dinghy-sailing, coasteering, rock-climbing, chartered fishing, golf and horse-riding. Local people are friendly, and love to see visitors coming to the area - so you'll feel very welcome! Actually look up Gareth Wray Photography online, as he takes quite a few shots in the general area - which will definitely inspire you to visit Donegal!

Charming, cosy cottage, open plan with central heating. Ground level, living room with double sided fireplace leading into bedroom with super king bed. Bathroom with walk in rainforest shower. Kitchen with full amenities. Outdoor decking with gas BBQ
The cottage itself is warm and inviting. The living area is tastefully furnished and decorated and features a large 46inch flatscreen tv. Double glass doors lead out to a furnished decking area with views of Mulroy Bay. There is a double sided solid fuel stove. The main cottage bedroom benefits from this. This ground floor bedroom has a super king sized bed and also enjoys sea views. Additional accommodation is provided in the cottage loft which has 2 single beds - this is suitable for children and more agile adults. Back on the ground floor there is a shower room with a constant supply of hot water. The stylish cottage kitchen is fully equipped for a self catering holiday - the kitchen sink window has views towards Mulroy Bay,
Mulroy Drive Cottage is a modern holiday home situated on an elevated site with panoramic views over Mulroy Bay towards the hills of the Fanad Peninsula. It is located between the coastal villages of Carrigart and Cranford and lies just off the Mulroy Drive. This scenic drive around Mulroy Bay was the first official extension to Irelands Wild Atlantic Way. The holiday cottage is centrally located to explore three of Donegals - and Irelands - most beautiful Peninsulas. Immediately to the north is the ruggedly beautiful Rosguill Peninsula . A 5 minute drive from the front door brings you to the Mulroy Bridge which is the gateway to the Fanad Peninsula. To the north west lies the dramatic Horn Head Peninsula.
  • Stayed in Mulroy drive for 2 nights for a quiet weekend away. Liz and tom have finished their bnb to perfection. Beautiful scenery and the cosy fire is brilliant. Would highly recommend to any couple in need of relaxation. Thanks very much!

  • Loved this wonderful little cottage. Such a homely and cosy space to have a babymoon. Even with the dodgy Irish weather, the views were amazing and the fire in both the sitting room and bedroom was my favourite feature! Despite being close to Liz's home, we closed the door and were left totally undisturbed for our stay. I would definitely recommend booking the cottage.

  • A perfect location for a romantic getaway. Away from the busy city sounds, one can experience the tranquility and freshness in the air around. Situated in a farm, 5 km away from the nearest village, the cottage is stunning on the inside. The place is very clean and very well insulated. I would definitely come back here! • Mary was a great host. The cottage has beautiful views over Mulroy Bay and Kerrykeel. The house was clean and well presented with a large kitchen diner perfect for entertaining. Most of our evenings were spent looking at the beautiful sunsets over the bay. For any problems Mary was on hand to help and was very helpful when our delayed flight meant the we arrived at the cottage far later than planned. The location of the cottage was excellent. Close to Milford and the Wild Atlantic Way, we could explore the beautiful countryside of Donegal. This was my partners first visit back to Donegal for 20 years, Mary’s hospitality, the location of the cottage and the wonderful views made this a trip to remember Thank you So much.

We would like to share our modern home with you as a base to explore the world class amenities within 3 minutes walking distance such as: Ballymastocker strand, once voted the worlds second most beautiful beach and Portsalon Golf Club - considered to be in the Top 25 courses in Ireland (Readers Digest) and the cosy confines of The Stores Bar and Sarah's restaurant on the pier. This is the perfect base to explore the many breathtaking sites the Wild Atlantic Way has to offer.
Our house is a recently built, spacious 3 bed, with a very homely feel inside and private patio to the rear, perfect for hosting those summer bbqs with friends and family. Upstairs there are two bedrooms; the master bedroom with double bed and ensuite, a twin room and a large living area with sofa bed and sun loungers that leads to the balcony which has views to the sea and the beautiful ballymastocker strand. Downstairs there is another double bed and the main bathroom. The living/dining area is based around an open fire in cosy surroundings with leads into the kitchen with all modcons. Washing machine is in the utility room beyond the kitchen. The large back garden and patio is secluded and private, with a patio bench and use of a charcoal bbq.
Staying in 8 Ard Alainn you will be spoiled by the location; a 3 minute walk to what was once voted the second most beautiful beach world. On the way to the beach you will walk past Portsalon Golf Club, one of the best links courses in Donegal, currently ranked in the top 25 courses in Ireland by Readers Digest and affiliated with 2014 Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley. A 3 minute walk in the opposite direction will take you to Portsalon pier where the Guinness tap is constantly flowing in the Stores Bar including live music at weekends. At Sarah's restaurant next door you will find it difficult to avoid the temptation to sample the fresh catch of the day. The pier shop rents out wetsuits, kayaks, paddle-boards, banana boating, etc., to cater for the watersports enthusiast and children alike. Portsalon is an ideal location to explore other gems along the Wild Atlantic Way with Fanad Head Lighthouse 10 minutes drive along the coast. Rathmullan, Downings, Glenbeigh National Park and many other areas of interest are all within reasonably short driving distances. We are very enthusiastic to share our piece of the Wild Atlantic Way and hope that you can experience and enjoy these beautiful surroundings too.

  • This is an amazing place!! This incredible and indescribable view of the sea and the environment - we knew the pictures, but in real life it is much better!! We enjoyed the cosiness and the beautifully given house, and felt at home. Everything was very clean and there was already a little surprise waiting for us in the fridge. Since we arrived in the dark, we did not find the house immediately, but Andrea was always reachable by phone and wanted to collect us, but we still found it :) We enjoyed the wonderful and quiet Inishowen peninsulas and were sad to have to leave after 3 days. We can recommend it to everyone and hope to come back one day, then maybe in the summer.

  • Incredible stay! Andrea's cottage is absolutely lovely with so much attention paid to all the small but important throughout. Beautiful views to the sea and nearby hills from the large windows in the kitchen/eating area and living room. Immaculately kept and well stocked. Andrea is very attentive and took care of every detail. Couldn't recommend more highly across the board to anyone looking for a true beautiful and quiet getaway in Donegal. Have stayed in many airbnbs around the world, and this one might be my favorite so far!

  • One of the highlights of my trip. House is comfortable and has stunning design. Lovely touches and fireplace. Views are extraordinary and though other houses are nearby, it feels like you are in the secluded countryside. Easy access to SuperValu in town for good grocery and veg, and about an hour to Malin for those looking to see the edge of the country. Andrew was very helpful and communicated well and quickly. This is a perfect home away from home.

  • The cottage was a great place to relax and the view from the kitchen was simply amazing. Kitchen was well equipped which made our stay very comfortable and enjoyable. Loved the book selection and couldn’t seem to stop reading instead of going out to check out the local recommendations from Andrea’s folder! All in all, a great stay in a picturesque location.

The friendly and hospitable host prepared a lot of food for us, detailing the surrounding scenery and nearby restaurants. The rooms are super clean and welcoming. There is a lot of heart in this place, perfect for a tranquil time in the Irish north. Plenty of beautiful nature around and the views from the kitchen and living room themselves are fantastic. • I was amazed by the tranquility and peacefulness of this little cottage. Inside was impeccably clean and comfortable, and was a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by. The surrounding area is also something that demands investigation too, as is simply stunning. The little touches and the nods towards poetry and literature around the cottage made for a very relaxing experience and stay. Beautiful little place.

Hi, Please take a look at our beautiful house and its stunning surrounding area. It is very special to us and our two girls and we are sure that you will come to love it also. Our home has been built with a strong traditional theme in min
This home has been built with a strong traditional theme in mind. We used natural building products where possible and also employed some features that would have been used in days gone by. Coupled with up-to-date plumbing, electrical and insulation techniques, this home is as comfortable as it is beautiful. Portsalon is a typically peaceful Irish fishing village bounded to the east by hills of the Inishowen peninsula, and to the west by Knockallagh Mountain (1200ft). It is on the western shores of Lough Swilly in beautiful north Donegal. An area of immense natural beauty the village possesses a superb blue flag sandy beach, which stretches for 2 miles and a picturesque little harbour and which looks across at the Dunree Hills, backed by the Uriss Hills. It is an area of some historical importance situated as it is in the Fanad district, the ancient territory of the Mac Swiney's. In 1917 the bullion-laden ship Laurentic, was sunk off the coast by a submarine, and amongst the salvage the ship's bell was recovered and can still be seen in Portsalon Church. To the north of the harbour there are some natural arches and wonderful caves which run along the coastline, the most notable of these being The Seven Arches, a series of caves and tunnels, accessible on foot, and the Doaghbeg Arch also nearby. There is a charming drive to Fanad Head, the site of the famous lighthouse, where the cliffs rise to over 300ft, facing the seaward end of the lough and looking across to Dunaff Head in Inishowen. For the sportsperson Portsalon has a splendid 18-hole golf course and the shelter of its harbour makes the village an appealing spot for sailing and boating. It all makes Portsalon a very desirable location for a holiday.

If modern, luxurious rooms, clean shiny surfaces, and excellent food are your thing, then this is the accommodation for you! Situated on the banks of beautiful Mulroy Bay in County Donegal, in the heart of the most stunning scenery on the Wild Atlantic Way, "Cor Na Rón" is the newest kid on the block.
Pat and John will welcome you to their home with afternoon tea and scones so you can relax when you arrive. Then chill and watch the incredibly beautiful sunsets over the bay. There is a large private lounge with patio doors overlooking the water, where you can watch TV (Sky and the sports channels) or play a game of pool. You are guaranteed a quiet, restful night in beautifully furnished en-suite rooms (King size or twin beds; can also accommodate 4 in an interconnecting King + Twin). In the morning, tear your eyes away from the magnificent view to help yourself to freshly squeezed orange juice, cafetière coffee or tea, fresh fruit and cereals, and a selection of home-made breads and jams while Pat displays her culinary skills preparing arguably the best à la carte breakfast around. Choose from such delights as Smoked Salmon with Poached Eggs, Omlettes, Smashed Avocado Toast, or, of course, the Full Irish. Whether you are exploring the magnificent beaches of the Fanad Peninsula, Rathmullan, Carrigart, or Downings (all within 25 mins), or playing golf at Portsalon or Rosapenna Golf Clubs, taking a tour of the Fanad Lighthouse, walking or cycling in the beautiful hills and lakes of "The Wild Atlantic Way", or enjoying The Donegal International Motor Rally, your only regret on check-out will be that you are not staying for one more night!!!
  • Wow and amazing. You will travel far and wide and you will not have a better experience. Pat and John are two wonderful people who couldn’t have done more to make my stay so brilliant. They have a stunningly beautiful home in an exceptional location. Pats a real pro in the kitchen too, her breakfasts are divine. My short 3 day stay was simply superb. I will be returning next year for a longer stay for sure.

    Shane2018-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect B&B, very warm welcome from Pat and her husband. Very nice room with own bathroom. Absolutely the best breakfast we ever had in a B&B. Everything was homemade and so delecious. I absolutely recommend this beautiful place.

  • Pat & John are amazing !! In Cor Na Ron we were like at home. Wonderful and clean house, breathtaking view and the host, Pat&John, are really fabulous, funny and very VERY VERY kind. They gave us the fantastic advices. P.s. We hope Pat goes to MASTERCHEF, she's very good chef and the "PatPorridge" is very delicious. See you soon Alice&Marco

  • Unforgettable! That is the one key word I would use to describe our stay! From the absolutely stunning property and location to the AMAZING Food to the unbelievably kind hospitality, our two day stay here was fantastic. If we could rate it 7 stars we would, our stay definitely exceeded our expectations (and they were already high from reading other reviews!) Pat and John thank you for everything, we will def be back next time we are in Donegal!

    Alison2018-07-01T00:00:00Z
  • I stayed for one night at Pat and Johns and I was blown away by the welcome I got. On arrival I was offered scones and coffee....so delicious. I relaxed for a while looking at the amazing view over the Mulroy. Pat was a very informative host, she made sure I knew all the sights to see and things to do in the area. The house itself was beautiful, so spotless, the bed was one of the most comfortable I've slept in. I would highly recommend staying with Pat if you're visiting this beautiful part Donegal.

    Fionnuala2018-06-24T00:00:00Z
  • I have stayed in many B&B's and 4* hotels on my travels but this was undoubtedly the best so far. Totally exceeded all my expectations. The room was super quiet and bed was so comfortable and spotlessly clean. The A la Carte breakfast was superb. I had Smoked salmon with poached eggs and Pat presented to the table 4 different home made breads!! Eaten from a magnificent table in a large picture window overlooking the most spectacular water views, so close to the water I literally felt like I was on it!! Such a beautiful location for a fabulous house. Pat is a wonderful hostess who clearly takes pride in her home and makes her guest feel so welcome. She was also very knowledgeable in local places of interest to visit during my stay. I will definitely return with friends later in the year.

Totally rehabbed beautiful traditional Irish cottage dating back to the 1800's located along The Wild Atlantic Way. Short walk to beach, pub and Fanad lighthouse. Comfort and tranquility await. Modern amenities. High chair and travel cot available.
The house has been in our family for hundreds of years and still contains some of the original 25 inch thick walls from the original dwelling. The view from the back door is of the ocean. Each bedroom has its own bathroom and the house has central heating plus a cast iron wood/coal burning stove. One bag of coal is provided for each stay to give guests the option of snuggling up to a toasty fire on chilly nights. A high chair and travel cot are available also.
The Fanad peninsula is one of the most scenic areas in Ireland and is a place of natural beauty steeped in history. Hill walking, surfing, swimming and golfing are all within a short distance of John Owens House.
  • Beautiful house near the ocean! Quiet and nice place! Beautiful views and places around!

    Aneta2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful cottage with everything you need It is modern but still with the feel of a cottage. It was so cosy which was great for a January weekend. House was very clean and Susanne the caretaker was very helpful. The area is stunning and the people are the friendliest we have met. The local bar “the lighthouse Inn” is just a ten minute walk away. The food and the coffee there is amazing

  • Great weekend away with my partner and friends. Joes place is in an idyllic setting up near the Fanad Lighthouse, just a 10minute walk up and around. We didn't take the tour but the walk along the coast and exploring the World War lookout ruins was good enough for us! The house was super clean and comfortable (and SO Quiet!!). The fire was fantastic and heating the place in an instant. Great little Pub around the corner also - Susanne and James made our trip extra welcoming.

    Nicola2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Joe’s cottage was lovely. It was clean and comfortable, the facilitates and decor made it feel really homely. View from the back garden was amazing. Great place to stay for a relaxing getaway.

  • Great location, very nice scenery, lovely beaches. Recommended.

    Tomas2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • A really great home to take a break from the fastness of life. Joe was very communicative. The house has the most breathtaking views of wild Atlantic way. The ocean is just outside the back garden. A morning view of the ocean starts your day. The lady that Greeted us on arrival was so nice and chatty. The lighthouse about a mile away is worth the trip. Definitely a few days here will work wonders. Thanks a million Joe. I'll be back.

  • The house was not not only beautiful, clean and comfortable but also surrounded by beautiful scenery and very close to a lovely local beach that Rachel advised us about! Rachel and John are extremely nice and accomodating (they even gave us brekkie and a ride to and from the pub which they didn't have to do at all) and I would have no problems recommending this place! Thanks again guys!

    Meadhbh2019-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • Thanks for looking after us last week. We loved your house, your private beach, advice on where to eat and surroundings. We hope to be back next year.

    David2019-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • Rachel and John's place is absolutely fantastic. It is sparkling clean and very comfortable. The views from the house and the room are great and the tranquillity is also fantastic. On top of that, John came to pick us up to the bus stop, offered us many lifts and also gave us many recommendations. He also baked bread for us the first morning and prepared a lovely breakfast! This place is worth every penny.

    Angel2019-08-03T00:00:00Z
  • John and Rachel do a stellar job of making you feel welcome. Their house is outstanding with views of the bay, and a cool sea breeze (it was rather warm for our stay). They are also great bakers, and the bread we had for breakfast each morning was delicious. Also of note, this is a true king size bed, which can be rare in Ireland. The overall experience was very good, and we'll be looking to head back soon!

    Steven2019-07-15T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely experience with John and Rachel during our stay with them on our trip to Donegal's Fanad Peninsula. They have a beautiful home overlooking the fields and the sea just outside of Portsalon. Our bedroom was spacious and extremely comfortable and the ample self-serve breakfast highlighted by John's home-baked bread was a perfect start to the day. They are perfect hosts!

Teach an Mhaistir is located in the townland of Ballylar close to Fanad Head along the wild Atlantic Way-the perfect spot to get away from it all! The house has been refurbished but retains the old world charm of a rural Irish cottage. The property is located on a private laneway with views of the Atlantic Ocean and 2 min drive to a popular beach (surfing/ swimming/ walks) and 5 mins drive from Fanad Lighthouse.
The cottage has two comfortable bedrooms upstairs sleeping 5 people (room 1 :1 King and 1 single bed, room 2 :1 Double Bed) (note access to the upper bedroom is through the lower bedroom ). Downstairs there is a spacious sitting room as well as a cosy living room. The living room has a stove, tv and adjoining kitchen.  The kitchen has all mod cons including a dishwasher. There is oil fired central heating to keep you cosy during your stay as well as a solid fuel stove.
Amenities are plentiful in the peninsula. The cottage is a short walk from Ballyhernan Bay, a beautiful Green Flag beach, ideal for walking, swimming and surfing along the Wild Atlantic Way. Nearby pubs include the Fanad Lodge (15 mins walk), Atlantic House and the Lighthouse Tavern. Portsalon is nearby with its golf club, world famous blue flag beach, bar and restaurant. A visit to nearby Fanad Lighthouse is a must. A great location for some peace and quiet and as a base for exploring the wonderful Fanad and Rosguill Peninsulas.
  • Ciaran's cottage is the perfect blend of modern sensibility and amenities, without losing the wonderful historical heritage of the building itself. The cottage had basic essentials for cooking and great instructions for each element of the stay from the wood fire stove, to dishwasher, and oil heating. There is plenty to do nearby with beaches and villages not far away, or you could choose to stay in, sit in the conservatory and take in the view and the pattering raindrops on the roof. Either way you go, its a win.

    Ryan2019-08-28T00:00:00Z

    Mariette2019-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • We’re just back for 5 nights at Fanad and loved our time there. Ciaran’s place has everything you need and is situated in a truly beautiful part of the world. I hadn’t done any research for this trip so his local guide book with lots of tips are very helpful. Take your time exploring the area - we only made it as far as Horns Head as we kept getting “distracted” by all the fantastic beaches/sights along the way! The local shop has the basics and are very friendly but stock up on main supplies at Lidl in Milford on the way. If you’re visiting in the colder months, the house has a pot stove that looks very cosy! Ards Forest Park has fantastic walks/beaches but if you’re not up for a long trek then drive to Ards Friary instead and there’s a coastal path from there. The Friary has a coffee shop too if you need to pick up a ready made picnic!

Close to Fanad head lighthouse,Portsalon & Rosapeanna golf clubs, golden beaches, lakes and a 10 minute drive to Ballymastocker Bay.Situated just 40 minutes outside Letterkenny With our quiet roads, tantalising scenery and many lakes this makes for a great location for cyclists, photographers, fishing &walkers Comfortable space situated in peaceful and quiet Ballinacrick.Guests are welcome to enjoy a common sitting room and kitchen. PS we do not charge cleaning fees.
A quiet and remote house all in close proximity of beautiful lakes and beaches. Wake up in a farm house and see some of the to day runnings on a fully working farm While this is a working farm, I believe in having a relationship with my animals. I do not use cattle prods or sticks. The animals here are treated with kindness and respect. At seasonal times of the year there may be an opportunity to feed pet calves or cows. You will hear the occasional rooster crow or cow moo and sometimes I have to run the tractor, but we are free from the sounds of traffic, trains, and other urban noise pollution
Lakes, beaches, Fanad head lighthouse, pollet great arch and Portsalon golf club to name a few local must see areas of interest

  • In our long weekend trip to Donegal, we stayed with Seamus and Miriam in their lovely house. We were amazed with the little touches that made us feel at home. The internet and Netflix were a welcome bonus, but the biggest entertainment is the cute pupper Roxy! The house is perfectly placed to explore lots of beaches and tourist attractions in Donegal. Would definitely recommend for anyone planning a stay in Donegal!

Charming cottage beside beautiful Portsalon Strand on Lough Swilly, County Donegal. Nestling in the crook of Knockalla hills, at the foot of the spectacular Knockalla Coast Road, this is a cottage dating from the 1800s, but completely modernized inside. It is surrounded by a lovely sheltered garden, with decks to the east and the west. Just a few minutes walk from the famous Portsalon beach, with lovely Knockalla in the background.
The cottage is very comfortable and has a relaxing pleasant vibe. The coastal and rolling hilly scenery on this part of the Fanad Peninsula is among the most beautiful in Ireland. Perfect for family holidays, for swimming, hiking, hill walking, cycling, blackberry picking. There is a convenience store in Knockalla caravan park, five minute's walk away. The Blueberry/Gala supermarket is 2.5 kilometres away. Kerrykeel, about four kilometres away, has shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. Portsalon Golf Club is a five minute drive. There is a restaurant, pub, and takeaway, at Portsalon.
A plain at the mouth of Lough Swilly, the neighbourhood, Magherawarden, is a place of great natural beauty. Soft rolling hills, fields of cows and sheep, tree-lined lanes, wild flowers, create a special gentle landscape, on the edge of the wild ocean. Seabirds abound. Hares and rabbits gambol in the gardens. Across the lough are the mounains of INishowen and Malin Head. People are warm and friendly.
  • The house is very comfortable and well situated.

    Iris2019-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • We had such a lovely time in Knockalla. With two small children they had a lot of fun playing in the generous space in the garden. The cottage is lovely and set in a beautiful part of the country. It is so close to the beach, which is spectacular, and there’s a campsite very close by that has a play area for children. We were absolutely spoiled for choice for things to do, there’s so much on offer. A return visit will be needed. Eilis made our stay better and was very helpful with any queries we had. We would recommend Knockalla for a stay and Eilis as a host

It is simple but has all the necessary amenities for a good holiday.really useful to have a good utility room with a washing machine and dryer.there is an open fireplace and rooms are well laid out. • An excellent base for touring the lovely Fanad peninsula, the Glebe Cottage is a beautifully-restored, characterful property. We spent a family holiday here with three boys aged 15, 13 and 10 and it worked very well for us. It's comfortable, spacious, clean and well-equipped, with a sunny private garden, a lovely place to spend mornings and to return to every evening after our travels, which included trips to nearby Portsalon (great beach for swimming and kites!), the Fanad Head lighthouse and the Derek Hill Gallery and house (all well worth the trip). The hosts were resident in the main house so on hand for any queries but the Cottage is a very private space.

Portsalon Luxury Camping is a fabulous and well-established glamping site on the Fanad Peninsula in Donegal. In 2019 it was described as one of the 15 Best Campsites in Europe by Yahoo.com. It has spectacular coastal views and a lovely rural setting.
The amazing 3 mile long 'Ballymastocker Bay' is just a mile from the site. Close by is Fanad Lighthouse and the amazing Great Pollet Sea Arch. Try the Narrow Quarter in Kerrykeel for coffee or lunch - a fabulous little place nearby.

Hillcot was originally an old stone cottage which has been lovingly renovated to the highest standard. The cottage stands on an elevated spot with outstanding views in all directions. We are literally 5 mins walk from the ocean on a quiet lane, mainly used by locals. This is a pebble beach and a great place to observe the seals as they bask in the sun awaiting scraps from the nearby fisheries. Our garden is south facing, a relaxing area to enjoy some spectacular sunsets, weather permitting.
Hillcot is spacious yet cozy. I have been told by friends that it has a tranquil, peaceful feel to it. It is obvious from you enter the home that every effort has been made to ensure that all needs are met, from unlimited wifi to highest quality beds and bedding. If you do have children or indeed you are the active type we have a range of bicycles available at the property for your enjoyment. A selection of toys and games are also available for younger children and hopefully for summer we will get our independent games room up and running complete with full size pool table and dart board as well as our covered bar-b-que area.
Hillcot is situated 3km from the famous Fanad Lighthouse, reported to be the most photographed lighthouse in Ireland. The views are stunning both at the lighthouse and indeed from every window in Hillcot, from the rolling mountains to the wild Atlantic ocean. There are local people living in the area so you are not completely on your own but generally the area is very quiet. There are two pubs within 2kms in either direction both serve food and a bit of local craic. The beach at the bottom of the lane is a pebble beach but 1km from the house is the entrance to a beautiful sandy strand with sandhills
  • Excellent cosy accomadation. Very family friendly. Just a stroll down the bohreen to a pebble beach,

  • Words could never capture the joy of our stay at Hillcot. It's a wonderful house located in a beautiful part of donegal. All 7 of us had the time of our lives. Elaine was a superb host and we had everything we needed and more! The house is sparkling clean, cosy and idyllic! We visited the pebble beach at the end of the lane many times. We visited fanad lighthouse and there was a lovely playground down the road too. We hope to return next year to the breathtaking views from the beautiful Hillcot View.

  • Elaine’s house is an idyllic Cottage with so many beautiful personal touches and character that instantly draw you and and make you feel right at home. The location was amazing, literally 5 minutes walk to a beautiful pebble beach. Elaine was right there to greet us and welcome us into her picturesque home. We can’t wait to return!

  • Hillcot was the perfect home from home. It had everything we needed and more, Elaine went out of her way to provide toys for the kids (1yr & 2yr) including a sleep cot and high chair. The house was spacious, comfortable and clean. Communication with the host Elaine was quick and very helpful. The area is peaceful, we enjoyed walking the area and spending days on the beach. Wishing Elaine all the best for the future and hopefully we will be back.

  • Elaine was such a great host, so easy to communicate with and has thought of everything to make her guests comfortable! Hillcot cottage is such a beautiful place to stay, the view of the sea from the main bedroom is stunning. The other 2 bedrooms are so cosy as well with lots and lots of space in all of them! The bathroom and ensuite are just lovely too! Downstairs the kitchen living and sitting rooms are all so clean and comfortable. Everything you could need in the kitchen, including picnic supplies, amazing! I have 3 kids (5,3+1) and such a lovely surprise to have so many toys for them to enjoy! You don't need to bring a thing! The tv and DVD options where super too! The area is very tranquil and only 5 minutes drive from fanad head lighthouse! So many beautiful beaches to explore nearby and tourist attractions! We'll definitely be back to Donegal and Hillcot will be our first choice place to stay... I didn't to want leave!

  • We had a wonderful stay in Elaine’s beautiful home. The property is very rural but is an easy drive to a number towns/attractions/eateries. We found it a perfect spot for exploring the north east of Donegal. Elaine was a great host, very communicative and made sure we had everything we could need.
