Your guide to Chipping Campden

All About Chipping Campden

Chipping Campden is a market town at the northern edge of the tranquil Cotswolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty dotted with picture-postcard cottages and manicured village greens. The town sits within easy reach of the rich literary heritage of Stratford-upon-Avon and the leafy promenade and Regency terraces of Cheltenham.

People come to Chipping Campden to admire its wealth of historical architecture. The High Street is lined with stone buildings with steep roofs that date back as far as the 14th century, and it looks like nothing has changed here for hundreds of years. These historic buildings house gift shops and antique stores as well as cosy tearooms and pubs. The 17th-century Market Hall in the heart of town features an original wooden ceiling and carved stone arches, and you’ll find examples of Jacobean architecture scattered throughout town as well.

Outside of town, the village of Broadway is a popular destination for epicureans, with a distillery, a deli with immaculate displays, and award-winning restaurants in honey-hued Cotswold limestone. Chipping Campden is also within easy reach of the Arts and Crafts garden at Hidcote, the Cotswolds’ tallest tower, and the Cotswolds Way — a 164-kilometre trail leading to the Roman town of Bath.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Chipping Campden

May is a particularly good time to visit the Cotswolds, as the weather tends to be dry, and many of the nearby gardens and parks are at their most colourful during the spring. As the flowers begin to bloom, head to Batsford Arboretum, 15 minutes’ drive away, to admire magnolias and cherry blossoms. Chipping Campden cottages are very popular in the summer, when the English weather is at its warmest. During the autumn, the changing leaves create a kaleidoscope of red, orange, and yellow that spreads across the hills and along Broadway High Street. Visitor numbers drop during the winter, which is marked by chilly, clear days and Christmas decorations adorning local towns and villages, from large-scale light displays to holly wreaths on cottage doors.

Top things to do in Chipping Campden

Cotswolds Way

This 164-kilometre trail runs from Chipping Campden to the historic city of Bath, with its famed hot springs and celebrated Georgian architecture. The trail traces the western edge of the Cotswold Hills, taking you through beech woodland, rolling pastures, and rustic Cotswold villages while providing sweeping views of the River Severn and the Malvern Hills.

Broadway Tower

A 10-minute drive from Chipping Campden, the late-18th-century Broadway Tower is the tallest structure of its kind in the Cotswolds at an impressive 312 metres. From the top of this Gothic Revival folly, you can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding hills, and, on a clear day, see across 16 counties. Just 50 metres from the tower, you can also explore a Cold War-era nuclear bunker on the grounds.

Hidcote Manor Garden

Located in the village of Hidcote around a 10-minute drive away, this manicured site is one of the most famous Arts and Crafts gardens in the United Kingdom. Horticulture-loving visitors come here to admire the different garden “rooms,” each with a unique layout and character. The roses here bloom in spectacular fashion.
