Holiday Rentals in Spittal of Glenshee

Just booked in Spittal of Glenshee

Tulloch is the home of Karen, Alistair & Barclay, it offers beautiful views, is great for hiking, is near the Cataran Trail, Pitlochry, Glenshee (Handy for the snow season). You’ll love Tulloch because of the outdoor space, the views, nature, the peacefulness. It is ideal for couples or solo adventurers, and even business travellers, as we are central Scotland.
  • Myself and my boyfriend stayed just for one night when going to see the Enchanted Forest in Pitlochry. Karen was very friendly and helpful. The room was lovely and she had provided more than enough coffee/tea as well as some homemade bread. Breakfast was also fab. We will definitely be staying again when back in the neighbourhood! :)

  • The reviews speak for themselves, we loved staying at Tulloch. It's all the special touches and the warmth of the place that makes it fantastic. I loved that it was in the countryside and felt very relaxing. Highly recommend.

  • Cozy, comfortable, idyllic country setting--easy to find. Fresh, home-baked bread waiting for us in our room was a wonderful and thoughtful touch to our stay. Lots of options were available for breakfast, and we could cook our own hot breakfast food, too. We had a pleasant stay, and enjoyed talking with Karen and Alistair, and playing with Barclay. Very thoughtfully appointed home. Thanks for having us, Karen!

    Kristen2016-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • Tulloch is the perfect stay to explore the beautiful nature of Scotland and Karen, Akistair and Barclay are probably the best hosts in Scotland!

    Henning2017-04-14T00:00:00Z
  • If your looking for a great place to get away from it all, this is the place. Karen's place is outside of Pitlochry, yet still close enough to make a run in to a restaurant or site -- but the charm of the place and the scenic views will keep you here. Fantastic place with a great host. Can't recommend this place enough!

  • The most wonderful place to stay if you're visiting the Highlands and Cairngorms National Park. It may be a bit difficult to find, I know we had a hard time, but as soon as you see the "Wee Scottish Gallery" sign, there you are ! By the way, don't forget to have a look at Karen's gallery, her photographies are stunning and she offers many Scotland / nature themed gifts for an affordable price ! Karen and Alistair are lovely people and they warmly welcomed us into their beautiful house. We slept very well in the king size bed and the room was large and cosy, even better than some hotels would propose at a much higher price ! Karen thought of every little detail to offer the perfect room, and the decoration is just delightful for every forest-lover ! We also had an awesome view on the surrounding landscape, it was so beautiful and peaceful ! We were delighted to find in our room a loaf of bread baked by Karen herself (delicious !) and a kettle and some tea for us to enjoy. Breakfast also was absolutely fantastic with bacon & eggs, porridge, a large choice of jams and preserves, fresh fruits, toasts etc... Be sure to enter Karen's quizz too, it's very funny to wander around looking for clues ! We had the best time at Karen's place and our only regret was to only stay one night ! Don't miss her BNB, it's a gem ! I can't find enough words to tell how great it was ! We were sitting on top of the world !

  • Karen is a fantastic host and her place is planted in a piece of Scottish heaven, very peaceful!

    Jeff2017-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Karen, Alistair and Barklay made us feel very welcome and comfortable. There was a loaf of freshly made bread, plenty of tea and coffee and black pudding for breakfast if you wanted to try Scottish fare. Bed was very comfortable and no sound from the road. Very relaxing. P.S saw a red squirrel.

My place is close to good areas for walking, skiing, cycling, bird watching and wildlife. You’ll love my place because of the neighbourhood, the cosiness the peace and quite and the scenery. My place is good for couples, families and solo adventurers.

  • We spent one night at Marian's cottage and we just loved it. The place is ideał for nature lovers or people who want to escape from the City and enjoy peace and quiet. It was also very well equipped and suitable for children. There were swings in the garden and the fance so the children can play safely. In The cottage you could find a wide selection of movies for children and adults. When we arrived we found bread, butter, fresh milk and cookies left for us. That's really thoughtful. We do recommend this place.

  • Very beautiful cottage, authentic and cosy We immediately felt good there The area is calm and peaceful, we enjoyed ourselves a lot even if it was a brief stop You literally get what you see Nature is impressively dominating... dunno if this region would be considered by locals as the heart of Scotland but we felt completely immersed and "depaysés" on our side! It is just at the doors of Cairngorms... for what it's worth, I would recommend to stay there for a few days especially if you like trekking and/or cycling, then hit the road through Cairngorms National Park with a few stops/picnics in between One of the most beautiful road we've ever been A big thank to Marian who is by the way a perfect host We simply could not expect better B&D

    Damien2016-07-29T00:00:00Z
  • Very cosy little cottage in a beautiful location. Quiet, peaceful and relaxing, ideal for a family getaway. The cottage is stocked with all the facilities and equipment one would need and even included milk and bread, what a treat! Thanks Marian!

  • Beautiful place if you like nature and walking. We spent just one night, but we can imagine one can spent a few days. We had a fine breakfast too!

Old Steading Cottage was the former cow shed at Dalnoid Farm. Now it is beautifully renovated but retains the original character with exposed stone walls and combed ceilings. The spacious cottage benefits from underfloor heating throughout and a wood-burning stove in the lounge. There are stunning mountain and river views from all rooms and the garden. Situated on a single level, the cottage is suitable for couples, families and guests with limited mobility.
Old Steading Cottage has a comfortable king size master bed, and single beds in the twin room. The kitchen is very well equipped with plenty of crockery, cutlery, glasses and equipment for 4 guests.
Dalnoid Holiday Cottages are in a beautifully rural part of East Perthshire, with stunning views across the Shee Water to Mount Blair. There are hill walks from the door, the nearest tea shop (Wee House of Glenshee) is 1 mile away and the nearest shops 5 miles. The boundary of the Cairngorms National Park is just 1 mile up the road, including the Glenshee Ski Centre 20 mins drive away. We are perfectly situated for exploring Royal Deeside, including Balmoral Castle, Highland Perthshire and the Angus Glens. Castles including Glamis, Blair, Balmoral, Braemar and Scone Palace, are all with an hour's drive, as are a number of whisky distilleries including Royal Lochnagar and Edradour. For those that prefer gin, Persie Gin Distillery has just opened a visitor centre 3 miles away.
  • Perfect to chill for a few days. Peaceful, comforting and welcoming. A really lovely space well thought out and provisioned. Could have spent all days just watching the birds.

    karen2017-12-10T00:00:00Z
  • The space in this cottage was very surprising. Photos don’t do justice to it’s openness. The view and location is stunning. Less than 10 minutes drive and you are in the Cairngorms, which was wonderful for photography and dog walking. The spa was sparkling clean and the kitchen was well stocked with all your cooking needs. Bathrooms were clean and and had plentiful amounts of body wash/shampoo/conditioner. Really can’t think of anything I needed that this cottage didn’t already have for me. Thank you, Sue.

  • We spent 5 nights at Dalnoid cottages and had a truly amazing time. It is clear to see that the hosts take great pride in their cottages and they really do go out of their way to ensure you have the best holiday possible. We came with our 3 dogs and although they were not allowed on any of the furniture or in the bedrooms, there was a dog bowl for water waiting for them and a large area at the back of the property for them to explore in. The hot tub was definitely a highlight for us and whilst you soak you get to take in the beautiful landscapes around you. I would recommend to anyone visiting to bring their own footwear to use to get to the hot tub as it is at the bottom of a set of slippery stairs and is surrounded by lots of small stones. The main downside that we found was that the property is quite far from any dog walking areas where they can be off the lead. We drove for 60-90 minutes most days for a decent walk. Overall a lovely stay and we will definitely be returning in the future.

    Jennifer 2018-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • Sue was a super host, loads of information and really friendly. She runs a little tea room up the road and there was shortbread and flapjack waiting for us on arrival....both were delicious! The Old Steading cottage itself is a stunning single storey converted farm building, the work has been done to an exceptionally high standard and decor is really stylish. The rear side of the cottage boasts uninterupted views of mountains and the hot tub isn't overlooked by anyone. I would happily move in tomorrow and the pictures really don't do it justice.

    rosie2017-11-06T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderfully comfortable, cozy and yet stylish accommodation with amazing views and plenty of peace and quiet. We spent a week there and although we explored the area thoroughly it was a pleasure each night to come home to a log fire or a dip in the hot tub. Sue and her husband were very friendly and helpful and their tea shop just down the road was also lovely with amazing cakes. We will definitely go back again and have already passed on the details to friends and family.

  • A perfect and idyllic country retreat and the old steading made our stay very comfortable. Truly a home from home!

  • Ben's place was excellent. We really enjoyed our two night it was just a shame it was not longer. Great location, a very comfortable cottage and very friendly hosts. We have a small dog and he loved the garden and we enjoyed sitting out in the sun. You really feel away from it all here. I would really recommend staying here especially if you are looking for a dog friendly cottage.

  • We were absolutely delighted with the cottage and had a lovely weekend enjoying the peaceful and beautiful surroundings. The cottage was lovely inside and presented to a very high standard by Ben and Vicky. Nice touches like the fluffy dressing gowns, and the BBQ coal and logs Ben dropped off for us made us feel instantly at home. We'll definitely be back and I would highly recommend the cottage to anyone who is looking for a well maintained, beautifully presented and peaceful retreat.

  • Lovely place to stay. If you enjoy a quiet, layed back surrounding, this is the place to be. The house is perfectly equipped and very cozy. Only one warning...you might lose track of time because it is so relaxing ;) There are plenty of nice walks in the mountains near by. Day-Trips to several interesting places and cities make it even better.

  • Can't recommend this cottage enough. It's perfect for a peaceful break and contains everything that you need. Great to relax after a day in the countryside. Ben was a very helpful host who was great about check in/out. Hopefully be back in the future!

  • This place is perfect if you are looking for a quiet weekend away. Everything about it was easy (finding the cottage, getting in and settled etc), it's very private and has everything you need for a short stay. You are secluded here (miles to any shops etc) and no wifi so my tip would be plan your trip and ensure you have enough food etc incase you don't fancy venturing to a town. Loads of walks etc close by. I would stay again

  • Sandra and George made us feel very welcome! We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere in their home, the very comfy bed, and the ability to return at any time during the day as we were staying more than one night. A very generous breakfast was prepared to suit our needs. Sandra's place is in a small village with no late night traffic noise. It is very close to the Community shop and cafe, and the local hotel, just 5 minutes walk away which has an excellent reasonably priced evening menu.

    Ian2016-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • Sandra is an amazing host and runs a superb Bread and Breakfast. The emphasis is on quality and pleasing the guests. My wife was very happy with our room. Sandra went out of her way to make dinner reservations for us at a nearby inn serving excellent food at reasonable prices. Without question, we would stay there again and spend more time in the area. Thank you, Sandra, you and George made our stay in Kirkmichael memorable.

  • Location suited us very well. Room was very comfortable and quiet. Excellent Scottish breakfast was quality and more than adequate. The Stables sign is situated to the side of the building so keep a lookout after the bridge if travelling North. Sandra & George are excellent hosts. Dinner at the local pub was more than adequate. • Had a lovely stay at this apartment. Apartment was exactly as expected. Communication with Audrey was excellent and very helpful. Stayed here with the intention of going boarding at Glenshee which is half an hour drive from the apartment. • Dear Kenny, Thanks so much for hosting us! We did enjoy staying in you fabulous house. Everything about our stay was amazing and we had really great time. As we were aware, skiing in Scotland is pretty much gambling, but even on windy or rainy days when we couldn’t ski we were looking forward to get back home and whatever the weather, enjoy our holidays. The house is very neat and has everything one may need, so a third of our luggage was pretty useless, including towels, washing liquids, board games, etc. We absolutely enjoyed spacious kitchen and the log burner. I’ll be looking at the schedule to book again soon. Thanks again, Alexey.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Strathclare House. Kenny and his wife Kim were great hosts. Kenny was very helpful on arrival, meeting and greeting us at the house and showing us how everything worked. He also supplied us with his personal contact details should anything arise/we have any questions during the duration of our stay. He and his wife were very thoughtful hosts and had supplied the house with everything we needed (and more!). The house itself was impeccable. Everything was very clean and in good working order. The large garden (and the brook at the end) was idyllic - ideal for our Labrador. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Strathclare House as a perfect base to explore Perthshire and the surrounding highlands.

    Caitlin2016-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • Strathclare House was a beautifully modern and spacious house to just getaway from the hustle and bustle of working and living in the city. My friend and I just didn't want to leave. The nature and vast expanse of space blew our minds every day. We definitely want to return, probably with more people to really maximise the space.

    Alison2016-10-30T00:00:00Z
  • Strathclare House is a fabulous property and a credit to Kenny and Kim. The house has everything you may need and you very quickly feel at home. We stayed over the Christmas period and Kenny and Kim had spent some time putting up Christmas decorations and a tree for us. The house is in a beautiful area in a small village, with a shop and a couple of pubs within walking distance. As well as the house, the gardens are well looked after with a river running along the end of the garden. We can definitely recommend Strathclare House; Kenny and Kim are excellent hosts.

Feels wonderfully remote but only 15 minutes from the major A9 Perth-Inverness road and 1 hour Royal Deeside.
Tucked up a pretty glen and set against the mountain backdrop of the Cairngorm National Park, Straloch estate feels wonderfully remote yet is only 15 minutes from Pitlochry and the A9, making it an ideal base for exploring Highland Scotland or simply getting away from it all for a long weekend. Stalker's Lodge is an extremely comfortable architect designed house with plenty of living space and lots of little luxuries to make your holiday special. Its most spectacular feature is the glass extension with a huge corner window that captures the lovely view down the rolling Strathardle glen. With comfy sofas and a cosy wood burning stove it's the perfect place to sit back, relax and appreciate the tranquil scenery, whatever the weather. Warm & luxurious The house is beautifully warm at all times of year and eco friendly too, thanks to the biomass boiler which runs off waste timber from the estate. You'll find crisp cotton sheets on the comfortable Hypnos beds, snug feather duvets, fluffy towels, underfloor heating in the bathrooms and delicious smelling handmade soap, shower gel and hair conditioner by The Highland Soap Company. Downstairs The semi-open plan ground floor has plenty of living space for everyone to spread out in. There's a sleek modern kitchen with stone worktops and an island unit with hob and seating - perfect for convivial cooking. The kitchen has high quality Neff appliances including a large larder fridge, dishwasher and induction hob. It is very well equipped with a large range of quality pans, dishes, knives and all manner of other accessories. Just off the kitchen is the sitting/ dining room with a table that seats up to 10 and a comfy corner sofa to relax on and watch TV. Next door is the wonderful double height sitting room extension with more comfortable seating, wood burner and a second TV. Sliding glass doors open to the deck to the front and to the patio at the back where there is a table and chairs for outdoor eating and a Weber barbeque. The all important boot room to the rear provides plenty of space for outdoor gear, dog beds and drying things. There is a washer/ dryer and a WC just beyond. Upstairs There are three bedrooms, all with comfortable Hypnos zip link beds that be made up as kingsize doubles or twins. The beds have feather duvets and pillows (synthetic can be provided on request) and will be made up for you on arrival. There are two luxurious bathrooms (1 en suite with shower only, and one shared bathroom with bath and separate shower). Thick pile cotton towels and bath mats are provided, along with quality locally made shower gel, hair conditioner and hand soaps. Music A wireless music system with built-in ceiling speakers allows you to play music from your smart phone or iPad in any, or all of, the rooms on the ground floor (please note that streaming music is not possible - see paragraph below re internet). Outside There is small area of lawn to the front and a larger garden to the rear with swings and a slide for children, a terrace with outdoor seating and a Weber barbecue. Families We have a cot and highchairs available and even an all terrain Landrover pram! (please note that only one of the bedrooms is suitable for a travel cot). There are board games, DVDs, toys and books in the house and outside there are swings and a slide and other garden games such as cricket, swing ball and a football net. The garden is securely fenced and the private access road is very quiet. Dogs We welcome up to 2 well behaved dogs over 1 year old. Dogs are not allowed on the sofas or beds and must sleep overnight in the boot room (please contact us to discuss if this will be a problem as we can occasionally make exceptions). The garden is fenced but dogs must not be left outside unsupervised. As this is a working estate with sheep and cattle, dogs must be kept on a lead around livestock but there are plenty of places you can let your dog run, including the 5 acre Millennium Wood which is securely deer fenced. Activities There's masses to do from your door, from walking and wildlife watching, to fishing or boating on the loch or a game of tennis on the hard tennis court a short distance away. There's even a games room with pool table and table tennis. Straloch is a great place people who love bikes, from small children peddling along the quiet back drive, to mountain biking and road cycling.
Straloch is situated in a sparse but friendly rural community. The nearest village is Kirkmichael, 5 miles away, which has a well stocked village shop with local produce and two hotels/ pubs (we recommend The Strathardle Inn). The small town of Pitlochry is 8 miles and has one fairly basic supermarket (CoOp) and lots of coffee shops, gift and shops selling outdoor gear. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from too, from haute cuisine at the 5* Fonab Castle Hotel to fish and chips. We have a list of recommendations in the house notes or we can send this to you in advance. There is a large Tesco in Blairgowrie (30 minutes drive) or you can have your groceries delivered (Tesco, Asda or Sainsburys). There are also a couple of excellent butchers and a deli.

  • 8 of us stayed in the Howff for Hogmanay, we all found it to be a very comfortable place to stay. The accommodation was tastefully decorated, basic cooking facilities were available in the eco pod and the bothy provided further space for cooking and washing up, the toilet and shower facilities were clean, and the mats provided in the pod were surprisingly comfortable to sleep on. The wood burning stove was a real treat and kept us very cosy and warm in freezing temperatures. With gorgeous scenery surrounding the area, there is plenty to see and do if you enjoy walking through the countryside, as we do and did. The pod is located beside a chicken run and there are goats and lamas to keep you entertained during your stay. All in all, a memorable stay in a beautiful part of the world. Thank you!

  • A great place to stay and use as a base to wander around the, extremely beautiful, area. The hosts provide all describe amenities, as well as a very nice shared area (the "Bothy"), which can be used as a cooking/socialise/relax area. Probably a lot more use during winter time. The provided fire pits can be used for a quick barbecue, which we did, and there were no issues with sleeping arrangements. Would recommend for people to visit.

  • This was pure luxury in the Highlands with nothing to want for. The house was immaculately presented and the information provided covered everything. The local pubs and eateries saw us every night, whilst Bellhaven Lodge was the perfect place to come back to.

  • We had a fabulous experience with our stay. From reservations with Hugh to our actual stay at the Strathclare House in Kirkmichael with Kenny and Kim Crawford. All three were lovely people and the house was perfect for housing our entire family in one house. The house was everything promised and more. It is located within walking distance of pubs, restaurants, a store etc. with a brook in the back yard. Quite private, everything in brand-new condition, conveniently located near hiking trails (we loved the Cateran trail). Also for a Distillery tour we recommend a beautiful drive (25 mins) to the Edradour Distillery, the tour is great and the drive is spectacular. Lastly, Kenny and Kim were wonderful hosts, showing us around the place and explaining everything we needed. We highly recommend the Strathclare experience, and certainly plan to return in the future.

  • The cottage was amazing!!!! The pictures on the site do not do it justice. We spent a long weekend here while catching up with old friends from university and could not have asked for more. The property is very well stocked with crockery/cutlery and the feel of it reminded us all of being in a chalet in the alps. We made good use of the hot tub which was definitely a highlight. The village is small but the pub is buzzing (when we were there they hosted a tub of war with competitors from all over Scotland)and the local shop will keep you on top of all the essentials. Brilliant trip and would love to come back soon!

  • We have just spent a lovely few days in Perthshire, based in Belhaven Lodge. What a great place, equipped with everything you could possibly need, from an exceptionally well equipped kitchen to torches for the walk back from the inn. We enjoyed eating outside and the very welcome hot tub after a strenuous day's activity! Everything was very comfortable and wonderfully relaxing - just fabulous! We definitely plan to be back.

    Lucy2016-05-10T00:00:00Z
  • This was our best accommodation by far - it had everything you could need and more (clean, spacious, well supplied with essential items) and was of a very high standard. The house is in a quiet and beautiful location (a real village) with so many things to do in the area - the walks alone are fantastic. Hugh was a wonderful and generous host who responded promptly to any enquiries I needed answered. I would go back in a flash. Thank you so much Hugh for going the extra yard as far as decor, facilities and comfort. Margaret - Australia

Our Authentic LMS Goods Wagon c.1941 was rescued from a farmyard in Aberdeenshire! It has been given lots of TLC and a post war British Rail train theme! Read the story of it's restoration in our news section. Our Goods Wagon sleeps 5, with a double bed and 3 full sized bunks all made up with linen. The wagon is off-grid but has authentic styled Led ‘gas’ lanterns inside. The wood burning stove also ensures you will be toasty and warm!

We are close to many walking routes and and Glenshee ski centre. The temperatures might now be dropping but fear not extra blankets and hot water bottles are here.

  • A delightful farmhouse, hosted by a lovely warm young couple. An exceptionally comfortable bed that allowed me to get the best nights sleep I've had in ages. The location is exquisite with beautiful views but just enough off the main tourist route to allow you a great sense of isolation. I hope to be back for a longer stay.

Bring sleeping bags or hire them from us for £2 a night. Electric light, heat, kettle, tea coffee & charging point. You can enjoy the stars at night sitting around your own fire pit under our dark skies. We supply fire boxes. Our Pods have internal heating when you need it.
  • From the moment we arrived Ecocamp was great. Emma was friendly and chatty, showing us around the bothy and the site, and got us set up with firewood. The pod was cosy and clean, with a lovely comfy bed, and we had some of the best views from our door. We loved eating outside and cooked on the fire pit both nights, even baking cakes in the coals which was just amazing. The showers and toilets were convenient and clean, and the site so quiet at night we slept for 10 hours! We enjoyed watching the llamas and donkeys, the chickens and the goats, but most of all the red squirrel by the bothy. The weather wasn't great but the weekend was still magical: thank you.

  • Catherine has a beautiful home and property that we would happily return to! It's an old farmhouse with lots of charm. There are 4 pet sheep in a field right by the house and a very friendly dog. The only thing to note is that you may want to bring a few extra sweaters if it's cold out during the summer as the central heating only works in the winter. She does however provide space heaters and electric blankets which ultimately made our stay quite cozy. The kitchen is well equipped and she provides a large collection of books and movies. The other thing to remember is that as she states in the house details, there is no wifi so just make sure to do any emails etc in town before heading home for the evening.

    Helene2017-07-22T00:00:00Z

  • If you are looking for stunning scenery, then this is the place for you. Up in the hills, driving through the rugged Scottish landscape, this is exactly what I wanted my mother to see on her visit to see my daughter and I. We live in Edinburgh and I wanted her to see another spectacular side to Scotland. The farmhouse is easy to get to from the 'main' road. Car essential. Three good sized bedrooms, living room with views, good sized workable kitchen. This was ideal for us as I had a three year old to keep safe and didn't feel that was a problem in this accommodation. Plus, lots of sheep and birds to see to keep her occupied. We will certainly return.

  • Tim was a brilliant host, very kind friendly and approachable. He answered my questions promptly and was very helpful. He made us all feel very welcomed to his home. The property itself is amazing. It was clean and immaculate. If you're considering this place please go ahead and book it in the knowledge that you will have gotten yourself a fantastic deal. The barn conversion had been wonderfully refurbished. It is spacious with modern fittings. The kitchen was huge and very well stocked! Tim very kindly have us a welcome pack with scottish food such as shortbread, etc etc....All modern amenities provided to make sure you'll have a comfortable time there. The open layout was fantastic. Real working fireplace was nice as it was winter when we were there. The showers and toilets (2 of each) were new and of hotel quality. We were there mainly for skiing at glenshee and the proximity to the slopes was great for us. For your grocery shopping there is a large Tesco 15 minutes away in Blairgowrie.

Tim and Wayne are such great hosts - warm and welcoming and very generous with breakfast goodies, as well as tablet and flapjacks, plenty of fruit too. We loved the location because it is set in beautiful countryside - peaceful and very relaxing. As we were going to a wedding about 10 miles or so from the Coach House - it was ideal. Tim and Wayne really contributed to making our three days stay just perfect. Highly recommended.

  • Lovely room in a beautiful house. Jamie was a wonderful host and he welcomed us perfectly. Breakfast in the morning felt just like home.. The house is just a couple minutes drive from the main street and most restaurants. Absolutely recommended!

  • Great place, great breakfast. Highly recommended. Perfect spot if you want to walk the Ben Vrackie or visiting Scotland's smallest distillery. The hotel pub down the road serves great food.

Pitlochry, Perth and Kinross, United Kingdom

A three-bedroom log-built house set in woodland on the outskirts of the historic village of Kirkmichael, in the vale of Strathardle in the hills between Pitlochry & Blairgowrie. Spacious, secluded and comfortable but still convenient for everything.
The house has a large kitchen/dining/living area with a well-stocked kitchen with oven/hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge & freezer and washing machine (plus a tumble dryer in the en-suite bathroom). The living room includes ample seating around an open log fire, a TV with Free-sat channels and DVD/Blu-Ray player, plus CD player. There are books, games & DVDs on the shelves, so help yourself, and pictures and other personal touches to give it a sense of home. And the whole looks out through large french windows onto a paved patio, the fire pit with its log stools, and the open woodland beyond. There are three bedrooms: a spacious master bedroom with a super-king bed (which can be detached to make two singles), a living flame fire for extra mood, and an en-suite bathroom (with under floor heating for your comfort); a twin room; and a bunk-bed room with additional pull-out bed (all full single-sized), plus further games & toys for the children. All have generous cupboard/hanging space. There is an additional shower-bathroom off the main corridor. Outside there is a large gravel driveway and car port with ample parking space (and more nearby). There is a paved patio area with a large picnic table, an outdoor fire pit, and also a small children's play house. It's set in a 4.4 acre site with a mix of grass, rocks, trees and shrubs running down to a stream, shading over into a large area of open woods and moorland around.
The Glen Derby log-built houses (and the Hotel) were planned and built between the mid-late 60s and the end of the 70s, with the similar houses on the other side of the Hotel (Rowan Hill), coming after that. You’ll see this gets a mention in the history of Strathardle (the whole valley from the pass above Pitlochry down to the Bridge of Cally, and beyond to Blairgowrie, depending where you want to cut it) which should be on the shelves or with the guide books & maps (and is on sale in the village shop, of course). These were pioneering structures in their day (mainstream mortgage & insurance companies are nervous about them, despite the fact that wooden houses are quite normal throughout much of Scandinavia and North America), and the builder, Jim Rattray (a local name: it’s the sister town to Blairgowrie), and his company Norlog are based in Kirkmichael and still making log-built structures up and down the UK (see http://www.norlog.co.uk/—you’ll see he talks about the benefits, ecological and otherwise, of log-built homes). One thing you will note is that the building creaks when it warms up and cools down: don’t worry, this is normal! If you fancy a little walk more than just wandering around the forest around the house or pottering down to the village (nice enough), go out of the drive, turn left, walk a few minutes up the hill, follow a hairpin round to the right and you’ll be up at the top of the Glen Derby site: the woodland opens up and you can see heather moorland up the hill and across the valley. A track strikes off to the right which will take you round and down Rowan Hill, rejoining the road up to Glen Derby below the hotel. Alternatively, if you follow the path off to the left at the hairpin and keep going—just avoiding the drives of other people's houses—you end up on a nice track looking out over the hills, then later through a gate and into an ageing and nicely gloomy conifer plantation. Go far enough and you come out the other side and keep going you can reach the atmospheric old walls and ruins of ‘Mains of Glen Derby’, the old farm that once worked the land around. There are maps and guides to local walks around the area and the whole region in the drawer of the dark brown side table between the two sofas (plus a framed 1:50,000 OS map centred on the house over the dining table). Glen Derby would have originally been an area mainly of grazing land (you can still see the dry stone field boundaries around), so apart from the close-planted conifers, which are gradually being cut and replaced with native and mixed species, the woodland around here is what has grown back over the last few decades augmented by the selective planting of various Glen Derby owners (rhododendrons are one of the tell-tale signs). Higher up Rowan Hill (the name is a clue to at least one local tree species) and further out along Glen Derby, you’ll see heather moorland. This is characteristic territory for the eastern Highlands, quite different to the soggier cover of coarse grasses, bracken and sphagnum moss that predominates further West. This generally gives easier (and drier) walking, a home for grouse, and a lovely purpling of the hillsides in August. Animals you can see around or near the house: • red squirrel: this part of the Highlands is one of the diminishing habitats where native red squirrel are still present • grouse: you’re more likely to see these up on the heather (or possibly flattened on the roads) • deer: the local species here are Fallow & Roe Deer (rather than the classic Red Deer, or the introduced Reindeer you get up in the Cairngorms); these wander freely around the area, often within sight of the windows, and any stretch of flattened grass is a sign they’ve been bedding down. For their good, and yours, please don’t approach, especially during the mating & calving seasons. Kirkmichael village itself was historically a very important centre for cattle trading between the highlands and lowlands. You’ll see information on the board down by the shop. The whole Strathardle area is full of historic remnants: there’s a ruined castle on the opposite side of the valley above the village, prehistoric settlements littered around the fields, and the atmospheric ruin of the old farm Mains of Glen Derby an hour’s walk out into the hills. The 60-mile Cateran Trail (the Caterans were Highland cattle raiders & traders) passes through the village as well, and you can easily walk sections of it from here (see http://www.caterantrail.org/). Within 20-30 mins. drive are Pitlochry, Blairgowrie and Dunkeld, themselves full of historic interest as well as being service centres, and Perth and Dundee are within an hour as well. For the hills and in season the skiing, Glen Shee is less than an hour away, and Braemar and the southern approach to the Cairngorms a short drive beyond that, or you can go over the pass to Pitlochry which will put you on the A9 for the access to much of the southern & central highlands, and Aviemore and the northern Cairngorms.
  • Great log cabin experience. Very interesting to explore and feel like you're in a forest. Be aware that the closest hotel is now out of business, and at the time the log cabin lodge next door was also closed (may have been the time of day or summer season), but the Strath' hotel is still open for a local bar and lunch/dinner, and it was quite perfect. Would like to stay here in fall or winter to embrace the fire time and explore the trails.

    Monica2016-06-29T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay and the cabin is even more amazing than the photo's suggest. Great location in the woods but also not too far a walk to the village. Richard provided a detailed guide which answered every question we could possibly have. Would love to return.

  • The log cabin is a unique kind of property set in a beautiful part of the world. It has a special feel and is definitely somewhere we'd consider visiting again. Would be great for young kids!

We have a herd of cows and a flock of sheep spread over several fields and working sheep dogs to manage them.
  • This is lovely B&B on a working sheep farm. The location is very scenic and off the main highway. However, the directions are good and the turn off the road onto their driveway is marked. Alison made us feel instantly at home, our room was comfortable, and hluthe bathroom has a lovely deep tub (for a relaxing soak). Breakfast the following morning was very good and conversation with Alison and Neil as we ate was relaxed and enjoyable. We would certainly stay here again - if Alison and Neil would have us!

  • The room was very nice and comfortable, in a very quiet area. We had a great time with Alison who was very nice and welcoming. Hopefully we'll come back again in the future.

  • Tomlea Farm was a wonderful place to visit, only wished we'd had longer. The hospitality was great and if you enjoy animals a walk along the lanes or around the farm with Isla the golden lab is a must! It is situated in a lovely part of the country side a short 25 minute drive to Pitlochry and a number of great walks. For those not from the UK it does take a little getting used to driving on the narrow country lanes and giving way to sheep and deer, but it all adds to the experience!

    Debbie2017-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • My daughter and I spend two lovely days on the farm. Alison, her husband and the two sons, have been very kind. We enjoyed great hospitality and lots of Information about the area . I can nothing but recommend this wonderful place to anyone who needs a good rest with nice people as hosts.

    Reza2015-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • We had such a wonderful time at Tomlea. Alison and Neil were superb hosts. We felt welcomed and right at home. We loved the location and the sense that we were able to observe life on the farm. Conversation flowed freely and they were both very anxious to make us feel welcomed and at home. We would love to return and would highly recommend it to other visitors.

  • A very well presented B&B run by an effervescent Alison! We were made most welcome and enjoyed a short walk with the farm dog for company, checked the sheep and cattle (wouldn't argue with the Limousin bull). Breakfast was excellent in a spacious dining room. What more could we have asked for?

    Bill2016-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great option if you're looking for a real farm stay, quiet country walks and time for chatting with Alison, who is a wealth of knowledge about the area, farming, what's on, and where to go. We had a great stay, thank you Alison.

  • What a great stay at Tomlea farm. Always a quick reply from Alison. The rooms were very nice and cozy, breakfast a delicious feast. And amazing hospitality! More than could ever be expected or hoped. They made it very easy to bring a 1 year old. Glad to have met you and Neil.

  • Jan was very welcoming, telling us about the local area. The place is decorated amazingly with lots of handmade touches by Jan, if youre visiting you should check out her crafts for sale! The kitchen was excellently equipped, even resources to bake cakes- which we did. A red squirrel met us on arrival in the garden, which was lovely. Good parking, shop very close by.

  • Absolutely gorgeous cosy cottage - the pics don't do it justice! Perfect size for our party of two families and brilliantly equipped. In a lovely location with pretty walks right on the doorstep and vhandy small play park right across the street for our young children. Jan was so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Would def recommend!

  • We all had a great stay at Beechbank Cottage over new year. The cottage is beautiful and is very well equipped. The surrounding area was great for walks with our dog and we even got to meet the resident red squirrel, which was a great experience. Highly recommended. Thanks to Jan for a wonderful stay. We will be back x

    Fiona2016-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Beechbank Cottage was our first stop on this vacation and our first ever Airbnb experience, and I'm afraid Jan has set the bar so high we may as well stop right now. My sister and I spent two nights at Beechbank and wished we could have stayed longer. Every single thing was perfect and exactly as pictured from the very well-stocked kitchen, comfortable beds, tea and coffee (and fresh-baked cookies!) and lovely yard. We were later than expected (beautiful drive up, but very small roads!) and Jan was very accomodating, meeting us at the cottage with her charming pup and showing us how to use everything. Would definitely recommend and/or stay again! Thanks, Jan!

    Melody2015-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is just as described and is a great place to get away from it all. Communication from Jan was great and she made sure we had everything we needed. The real fire was on when we arrived which was a nice touch.

    Gary2018-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Jan was a very warm and welcoming host - and has created a stunning holiday home in Beechbank Cottage. The house is very peaceful, beautifully decorated and designed (it's clear that Jan is a talented artist and textile designer - the house is full of lovely handcrafted touches), has an extremely well kitted out kitchen, beautiful bedrooms, relaxing bathrooms with roll top bath, cozy snug with log burner, sunny (or fairy lit post-dusk) conservatory, and has a lovely private garden full of wildlife. The location is great too - right by the river with nice easy walks and viewpoints roundabout, and in easy walking distance to the local pubs and eateries. The village shop is surprisingly well kitted out too with local fruit, veg, meats, drinks, eggs, cheeses etc - and for a very reasonable cost. Couldn't recommend this place more highly - we'll definitely book again!

    Charis2015-05-05T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is beautiful and is very well decorated and equipped!! The village itself is peaceful and we visited one of the local pubs on an evening which was certainly different to the pubs in Newcastle :)!! Unfortunately Jan was feeling unwell this weekend, but this didn't matter at all as she kept up contact throughout the weekend and when I sent a query to her she responded very quickly. I wish we could have stayed here longer and explored the area more. If you are looking for more extreme activities, we booked with 'Nae Limits' to go Canyoning which was amazing (water was freezing) but they do lots of land and water activities! Will be recommending this cottage and will look forward to hopefully returning ourselves. Thanks Jan!

The farm and farmhouse are set in the Scottish highlands out in the country. We are a working farm so have many sheep, lambs and cows. We love the peace and quiet of the countryside here. There are several local hotels with restaurants both 4 miles from us, Bridge of Cally Hotel and Strathardle Inn, Kirkmichael. They do not serve dinner after 8.30pm.
  • Alison was very friendly. Unfortunately it was not possible to have our dag stay in the room. So Alison arranged for us a very nice alternative, the Inn, near her farm.

  • The most perfect Scottish countryside farmhouse! It is amazing and exceptionally clean. They have everything you need like a 5-star hotel. The breakfasts were great and Alison was a pleasure to interact with. Her cooking and advice made everything better than we could've expected! We highly recommend her B&B to anybody looking for a relaxing trip into the Scottish Highlands!

    Tai2017-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed in Alison's bed and breakfast with our family of four as part of our summer vacation and much enjoyed it. Alison has been the warmest host possible and offered a great holiday experience for all four of us. The kids (11 and 13 years old) in particular enjoyed being on a farm and interacting with the animals (we will all miss dog Isla that we have been taking out for walks!). The rooms were very comfortable and in excellent condition. The breakfast was very nice. The farm itself is located in a beautiful, isolated (for Dutch standards!) spot in the hills and was very nice to walk across. It is an excellent base for visiting the nearby park, castles, etcetera. I warmly recommend Alison's BnB!

    Jaap2017-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • The Farm is a quite and lovely place. The rooms are decorated with lovely details and everything was very inviting. Alison is very nice, friendly and helpful. It was a pitty just staying there for one night.

    Karin2016-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • It's a beautiful home on a working farm with generous, comfortable accommodations and a very friendly and hospitable host. Ali is tremendously helpful and made us feel completely at home. The B&B is located perfectly for exploring the Pitlochry, Perth and surrounding areas.

    Cindy2017-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Alison was extremely welcoming. Once we had settled in she took us on a walk of the farm. This was a highlight for us as the veiws were stunning and Alison was happy to answer all my questions on the history of the land snd the farm. The kids loved running after the dogs and picking raspberries. The house we stayed was lovely and very comfortable. Great breakfast. We would stay again if we come back to Perthshire.

The Cabin was built in 1968 but has been extensively modernised in the last couple of years. Its very comfortable in both summer and winter with central heating and a log burner. The Cabin is a tranquil place set in woods but within easy distance of The Village. The light is fabulous, the Garden beautiful in any season with different plants and animals easy to spot. The cabin can sleep 10 with kids but 8 is a comfortable number for adults. The ski slopes are just 20 mins drive away.
We're afraid we can not accept more than 10 people staying in The Cabin because we want to keep it clean, well maintained and enjoyable for future guests. The living area is quite big and has the conservatory off it. There is access to the surrounding terraces from the living room and the conservatory. There is a lot of outside terraced / decked space to sit and enjoy the views and take in some sun. The lawn below the cabin is great for football or team games.
The Cabin is set in its own garden and there are some other cabins in the glen built like ours. The neighbours won't impact your stay but are very friendly, its always good to greet them if you happen to pass them on a walk. Its very safe in the glen and people value the tranquility. Nose travels far in this atmosphere so please be considerate to other people. The Strathardle Hotel in the village is a good place to eat and The Kirkmichael Hotel, also in the village has just been bought so that serves food too.
  • We stayed at Taras place for a quiet getaway. The place was beautiful and the cabin even more so. We had cars to we could drive around and also had a midnight barbeque (as you do). 10/10 would book again if I am in that part of the "woods" again. Amazing experience!

    Vipin2017-06-26T00:00:00Z
  • Superb cabin in a secluded forest location. It's huge inside and out and has all mod cons. Watch the wildlife stroll through the trees and enjoy a glass of wine on the decking or the patio. There's lots of great activities within an hour's drive: Segway fun, quad bike adventures, cycle tracks etc etc. There's a little village shop nearby, but nothing else, so make sure you've lots of wine with you. All in all I'd thoroughly recommend this place for a relaxing break with friends and family.

  • Lovely, spacious, clean and homey cabin in the beautiful Perthshire countryside. The cabin provides a feeling of seclusion whilst only being a short drive away from nearby towns. There were 8 of us holidaying together and we never felt crowded as there was ample space to house us all comfortably. Tara was easy to communicate with and provided a very helpful guidebook, so we had clear directions and a reference for any questions while we were there. We absolutely loved our stay here and intend on returning! Thank you again, Tara :)

In the Highlands of Perthshire, the School house is the perfect, relaxing Scottish country retreat. Spacious and quiet, with tranquil views, this is real countryside living. This large, private detached home has recently undergone a full renovation. *Pet free home*
**Please contact me if you would like a longer stay at a negotiated price** The Schoolhouse, a former Victorian school, this large detached property has been fully renovated over a two year period. This is a labour of love! Over two floors, as much of the old charm has been retained as possible. With original wooden flooring, picture rails, big school door, and log burning stove that heats the 4 metre high vaulted school room. Our beautiful interior designed home houses a collection of antiques and items collected over 20 years in flea markets, auctions and antique shops throughout Europe. The Old School House in Perthshire is an enjoyable, peaceful place to be. With two main bedrooms you can drift to sleep in one of the twin beds, or in the king size Antique French upholstered bed. In addition, if there is a fifth member of your party, they can use the third bedroom which has an antique half tester bed (but is a little on the short side - not suitable for taller people!) There are two bathrooms, each with free-standing baths. There is no shower, but there is a (powerful!) shower attachment that can be used when you are having a bath. This spacious, eclectic home, is the perfect base to explore all that both Perthshire and Scotland has to offer. To make your stay as comfortable as possible, you will have full access to WIFI, washer & dryer, kitchen with microwave, oven, gas hob, dishwasher and fridge/freezer. You can choose to eat in the dining kitchen, or at the main dining table in the School room. There are two comfortable sofas and armchairs, in front of the large log burning stove. There are two bathrooms, one has an original roll top cast iron bath, the other is roll top and made from volcanic stone. No shower, but baths fill quickly! Available to you: Towels, Fresh Linen, Hairdryer, Shampoo, Conditioner and soap. House: Speedy Wifi, tea, coffee, milk to get you started, full use of kitchen and condiments. I should mention there is no TV - enjoy a peaceful break in front of the log fire instead :) * Please note that we love children, but the School House is not currently suitable for young children due to the stream and ponds*
This part of Perthshire is an extremely special place in Scotland. This really is the wilds of Scotland. The location of the Schoolhouse is in a very small village in the middle of the low highlands - you are right in the countryside! Quiet, teaming with wildlife - in the garden you can see buzzards, rabbits, red squirrels, swifts, swallows, and goldfish. In the wider area you can take part in clay pigeon shooting, horse riding, walk the Cateran Trail, visit Scotland's smallest distillery, go to "Cowboy Camp", and play golf at Gleneagles, St. Andrews, or Blairgowrie. You can also visit the Birks Cinema - a fabulous community run cinema in Aberfeldy. There is fly fishing on the Tay, and you can enjoy a fabulous meal at Fonab Castle. The village you will be staying in is a very small one, surrounded by an abundance of countryside. Your view from the sofa and chairs in the School room is that of cows on the small hill opposite. A car is important. Visit in the late spring and summertime, for Highland games/Highland gatherings throughout Perthshire. Including the Strathardle Highland Gathering, the Braemar and Pitlochry. We look forward to welcoming you to the School House!
  • Gillian's place is a treasure and I cannot recommend it more highly. We could not have been more comfortable in this magical area of Perthshire. All of the civilized areas around Pitlochry for shopping and the wilds of the Cairngorms just over the hill for hiking, this is a secret paradise that will remain in my heart for life. Gillian's generous breakfast foods laid in were a welcome treat at the end of the road and the house and gardens are the perfect place in which to awake to the sights and scents of these glorious mountains and glens.

  • Gillian made us feel so welcome in her beautiful home in Perthshire. Although we never met in person, she was immediately in touch with all the questions I had and left us some nice treats in the kitchen to make our stay even more comfortable. The house itself is a real gem, full of character. I wondered where Gillian had found all these unique beautiful objects to decorate the space! i can imagine it took 20 years as the listing says! The area itself was also fantastic. We loved the walks on the Cateran trail. The Dirnanean Garden nearby is definitely worth a visit. The village of Pitlochry has so many special shops to pick up fantastic wine and special food treats. Donaghy & Sanderson (deli.scot) worth visiting for foodies. We spent a week here but we could have easily stayed for much longer. Such a great space in a really gorgeous part of the country. All in all we had a wonderful stay in this beautiful school house. Highly recommend!

  • This is the most beautiful house we've ever stayed at and a perfect place for our honeymoon. Gillian was wonderful and great with communication and looking after our needs, plus she clearly has an eye for beautiful design, interior decorating and style. Pictures can't do justice to how wonderful and beautiful this old house is and the garden as well - wow. Sitting up above the house over looking a lily pond and the valley with a cup of coffee is a memory I will treasure. We both were very impressed and enchanted by this gorgeous place and wish we didn't have to leave. Elegant, beautiful, secluded, enchanting, fun, peaceful - all words to help get an idea of how great this house is.

  • The house at Ballintuim is a real gem - full of character and charm. Gillian has decorated the house beautifully and it feels very grand and luxurious whilst also being cosy. There are big comfy sofas in the living room from which to gaze at the wood burning stove. The bathrooms are gorgeous and and the beds were fab. We enjoyed our stay over new year and would love to return in the summer so we could enjoy the fabulous garden. Gillian was very welcoming and made every effort to ensure we had everything we needed. We would highly recommend this as a super place for a break in a spectacular part of the country.

  • We loved our stay at The Old Schoolhouse in Ballintuim. If you love period homes, you will really enjoy this home. It's full of character and makes for a highly memorable and cozy stay. We felt extremely welcome and Gillian was quick to answer any queries we had. I would highly recommend to others, particularly to those who enjoy being surrounded by beautiful antiques and interesting artifacts.

  • This is the best kept secret of Airbnb! Totally amazing, big, comfy and luxurious house with wonderful views and a magical garden. The interior is mind blowing for it's style, quality and sheer originality. If you love country house hotels, this is your own private mini version. This house was the highlight of our stay in Scotland, wonderful coming back to this home and sinking into the sofas with a whiskey. Can't thank Gillian enough for her kind hospitality.

  • An absolutely magical place to stay! We had the privilege of being Gillian's first Airbnb guests in her Ballintuim School house, and stayed for six nights. We arrived after dark and were welcomed by Gillian and a roaring fire in the wood burning stove in the drawing room. This place is every bit as special as the pictures show. Packed full of curios, with deep comfortable sofas and crisp white bedlinen on the most comfortable beds. Choose between a day-time bath with Mary and the ducks in the downstairs bathroom looking out the porthole at the rambling garden outside with a cup of tea, or the upstairs bathroom of "bad art" and vintage toys with candles and a glass of wine... no... it's too difficult, you'll have to try both!! Gillian was delightful and could not have been more welcoming and accommodating, and had a bottle of wine on the table for us and provided lots of useful tips on worthwhile adventures nearby. The area itself is beautiful. We visited in October and the colours in the part of Scotland were incredible. Lovely walks nearby. Spoil yourself to a memorable visit to this wonderful place! Mary and rubber ducks The bathrooms are the envy of

  • A wonderful experience. The cottage is in a lovely setting and we were welcomed with wine, provisions and a box of chocolates. The cottage is very well decorated and the beds are very comfortable. Also the cottage was extremely clean. Gordon showed us how to fish on the river at the foot of his garden which was fantastic. We will return as soon as possible.

  • Riverview Cottage is a completely delightful and relaxing place to stay. This was our first trip to Scotland; we decided to book a week for the Boxing Day/New Year break. Gordon and Jeanette are great hosts. When we arrived Gordon made us feel extremely welcome, showed us the cottage and brought coal and firewood for the open fire. The cottage has been beautifully renovated and during our stay, had a Christmas Tree and was tastefully decorated throughout. We were also provided with Wine, Chocolates and Shortbread upon our arrival. During the week, we explored the local area, travelling in a different direction each day. Gordon mentioned to us about the annual New Year's Day Street Party in Pitlochry, which we really enjoyed. We would like say a big Thank You to our hosts. My wife and daughter and I had a lovely time at the cottage and would definitely recommend it to anyone.
