All about Elgin

Located along the River Lossie in the northeastern region of Moray, the Scottish town of Elgin is known for its medieval architecture, and is home to notable cathedrals, abbeys, and cemeteries. Walking paths in the centre of town take you along the river through Cooper Park and Elgin Biblical Garden and past local landmarks including Elgin Cathedral and Bishopmill Bridge. While the town’s historical sites are a major draw, Elgin is also close to some of Speyside’s most famous whisky distilleries.

As a small market town, Elgin wouldn’t be complete without the monthly farmers’ market — the second farmers’ market established in Scotland — held in the centre at the Plainstones. Here you can pick up plants and locally made arts and crafts alongside cheeses, pastries, and freshly caught local seafood, including lobster and salmon.

What are the top things to do in Elgin?

Elgin Cathedral

Known as the Lantern to the North, Elgin Cathedral was built in the early 13th century and is one of Scotland’s most beautiful medieval structures. Although in ruins, much of the exterior remains, including two of the original towers that you can climb to the top. The northwest tower overlooks the town of Elgin and provides a unique view of the cathedral. Several informative displays are located around the property to educate visitors on its history.

Gordon Castle Walled Garden

Located around 15 minutes east of Elgin, Gordon Castle Walled Garden covers nearly eight acres, making it one of the largest gardens in the country. Not only is the garden a beautiful centre of peace and tranquillity, it also produces fresh produce — including apples, plums, apricots, and asparagus — which you can enjoy at the onsite cafe. The garden also features a maze and an outdoor theatre.

Elgin Museum

Founded in 1836, Elgin Museum is one of Scotland’s oldest continuously operated museums. Numerous exhibits focus on the area’s history and archaeology, with displays devoted to artefacts from all over the world. In addition to its historical collections, the museum is also home to several works from local artists.
