  • So Lovely !

    Lauren2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Langwell Bothy is small but my husband & I found it to be quite comfortable; Elaine & Nigel have made as much as is possible of the available space. The house is easy to find, and within several minutes’ drive of the Stromness port . The view out over the water to Hoy is beautiful, especially at sunset. The rural setting is peaceful, and the Neolithic sites are within a short and scenic drive. We’re glad we chose Langwell Bothy for our visit to Orkney!

    Sandra2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • The Bothy was perfectly situated in the country, with a lovely view from the bedroom in the morning. The little kitchen was perfect to enjoy some local bread at breakfast. The accommodations were spotless and comfortable. If you are planning a visit to Orkney, I would highly recommend staying at Langwell Bothy.

    Robin2019-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Elaine’s place is so cozy. Bonus is the electric warming bed, but the absolute gem of everything is the view you wake up to in the morning! It’s been one of the best views we’ve had from any of our rooms this trip, and we’ve been around the whole country.

    Gillian2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • An ideal location to visit every part of the island. It had the most breathtaking views which we woke up to each morning. Beautifully clean and well equipped we could not of wished for anything better. Elaine and Nigel are perfect hosts and always prompt on responding to any questions we had.

    Michelle2019-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely little place in the countryside, with a fantastic view. Pretty much in the middle of nowhere, yet conveniently located in between all the places you might want to visit in the Orkney mainland. Quiet, peaceful and private

    Carsten2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Langwell Bothy was my best stay so far on my travels through Scotland. Nigel and Elaine were the most spectacular hosts I’ve encountered yet. The space is perfection with every touch you could need to feel at home.

    Sarah2019-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • The Longwell Bothy is absolutely fantastic and very charming. The view is stunning and the accommodation is well located for exploring the island. We definitely would come back!

The cottage is in a quiet rural area 10 minute walk from stromness pier head. There is panoramic views with the island of hoy and the Atlantic to the west and wild country side and farmland in the east. There is also a large mature garden which houses some hens. It is also well situated for walker's as in every direction is a nice walk. Weaverhall is in a beautiful secluded area but all local amenities are easily accessible.
Our comfortable cottage is set in a stunning area and has a private garden for your use. The cottage is well equipped for your stay with a shower room, combined washer/tumble drier, cooking facilities and equipment. All towels and bedding are provided. WiFi access is also available.
  • We stayed at Weaverhall Cottage in March 2020 and had a fantastic time in this accommodation. Neil pre arranged to meet us in Stromness to guide us to the cottage as it was a bit tricky to find on google maps. The cottage was clean, in a great location if you have a car, and had stunning views over the island of Hoy.

    Danny2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • Nice little cottage with a stunning view! But its good to have a car(:

    Tessa2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time at this cottage. There are gorgeous views over the sea, and lovely walks nearby. The cottage had everything we needed for a self catering trip and was really cosy with lots of nice touches! Ingrid and Neil were very helpful and so accommodating. Excellent hosts and we would definitely stay again (Probably in summer though! 😂)

    Alison2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay at Neil's house. It was really cosy and homely in the evenings with stunning views during the day. A short walk to Stromness (though I'd bring a torch for the evenings if you are walking back) and a thoroughly pleasant place to unwind after your day. Would stay again.

    Sasha2020-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • Really cosy place for two, with fabulous views.

    Rose2019-12-01T00:00:00Z

  • Weaver Hall Cottage is a lovely, cosy, quiet place for two with beautiful views. It has everything you need for a self-catering holiday home and was a great base for my husband, myself and our dog for epic walks and sight seeing. We had a brilliant time in Orkney and really enjoyed the cottage.

Cosy attic double bedroom with a table & two chairs. It has it's own en suite shower room. The house is on the waters edge in the heart of Stromness with it's wonderful old cobbled streets & lanes. It's a short walk from the ferry terminal. With a selection of small shop's closed by, a little further is a co op (it has extensive opening hours). You'll also find hotel restaurant's & cafe's close by. There's no direct vehicle access, though there is parking close by.
With it being an attic room on the second floor it may not be for people over 6ft 2 or have difficulties with stairs (though the steps are not steep). The bed is a standard double. You'll also find a small fridge, toaster & kettle, with a selection of tea's & coffee, (you'll need to bring your own milk). The pictures tell the story, the house is right on the waters edge, it has a wide sea wall, perfect for sitting on, watching the boats & wildlife come & go. It's only a few minutes walk from shops, ferry terminal/bus stop & museum. You'll also find wonderful displays in the Pier art centre. The room is nice & cosy, but you have space to move around. There's a built in cupboard which is big enough to store luggage away. You also have your own heater, so can control the temperature in the room.
Stromness is a very peaceful place to be, & the house is very secluded even though it's in the town. Orkney has very little crime, so it's a very safe place to be. We also have a public swimming pool, it's situated at the north end of town & of course a 18 hole golf course at the south end (overlooking the Island of Hoy).
  • Susan's accommodation is cosy, clean and comfortable and Susan is a great host. Her home is very central and the views over the harbour are lovely. We had our own bathroom and we also had a toaster and microwave in our room and we really appreciated being able to prepare snacks. Stromness and the Orkneys are great to visit - the scenery is wonderful and there is so much history to learn about. We recommend staying with Susan.

    Jean2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • Susan's place is lovely and a great location! Really enjoyed staying in her place which was on the top floor. Susan herself is lovely and happy to provide lots of information regarding where to go and the best things to see! Highly recommend staying here. The only downside was that we didn't have access to kitchen but she provided a microwave, kettle and tea/coffee.

    Alison2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Friendly and helpful host, cosy clean room with a great view of the harbour!

    Anna2019-12-03T00:00:00Z
  • Susan is very friendly and kind host. Her place feels warm and cosy. Everything was clean and tidy. We really enjoyed our stay there and also the chat with Susan. We definitely recommed this place!

  • Excellent place to stay, clean, friendly and a great location

    Catherine2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Probably the best location and view you can ask for. The room was spotless and clean, very comfortable bed and a lovely bathroom. Susan is extremely welcoming and easy to talk to. Highly recommend this little gem.

    Francois2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • Super accommodation right down at the waters edge in Stromness. What a find. The room is spacious, well equiped, super clean .... The location is ideal for getting around Stromness. Susan was a very welcoming host. Would highly recommend this place.

    Finlo & Liz2019-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • The place is clean and cosy, it has a wonderful wonderful view and you can reach anything in Stromness in few minutes. A few houses ahead I could hire a bicycle, a few houses downwards there is a little grocery store. Susan is very reliable and likes to communicate, I really liked chatting with her in between. I was sad that I could not stay longer, it is a beautiful place! Absolutely recommendable!

40 Alfred Street, Stromness is a charming 1800's, 4 star cottage set right on the sea with its own private pier and parking. It has a magnificent view over the sea, with stunning views of sunrises and passing vessels. We also have 4 other Cottages on the sea on the Stromness Harbour, a one bedroom, three-bedroom and two, four-bedroom Cottages. Each Cottage is equipped with absolutely everything including a Cook's Larder (lots of coffees/teas/hot chocolate, condiments etc). Wi-Fi, Library.
This architect re-modelled stone, 1800's, fisherman's cottage - has loads of character and is positioned a few meters from the sea. It has it's own private pier with tables and benches to enjoy and it also has access to the little stony beach at low time via it's own private steps. Parking is right outside the front door. It is equipped with everything possible to a very high 4 star standard. Including a really cosy fireplace if you wish to get seriously snugly!
  • Splendid cottage in a delightful town on a fascinating island. Christmas spent here visiting family who live in Orkney. Was concerned that the cottage in its "in the sea" location might be a bit cold and damp - very quickly we had it cosy and very comfortable. Wonderful sunrises and sunsets with a mix of both millpond and rough seas to enjoy. Even in darkest and cold December there is much to do and see in Orkney and the cottage was absolutely the appropriate location from which to enjoy the island.

  • Rosemary's cottage is in a superb location and Stromness is such an interesting and unique wee town. The cottage is full of interesting bits and pieces and is very comfortable - especially after a day exploring brochs and getting muddy! A home from home.

    Norma2019-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • 40 Alfred Street is a spacious yet cosy cottage with its own pier and little beach, making it the ideal place to experience the history and charm of Stromness. The house is exceptionally clean, well stocked and very comfortable. It's ideal for spending quality family time and offers so much more than just a base for exploring the Orkney islands.

    Lindsey2019-04-13T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place to stay - much bigger inside than expected, and the outside has great views. Really felt the history of the cottage and the town while visiting.

    Iain2019-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • The standard of this gorgeous house was well above the standard for a holiday rental property, I would not hesitate for a second to recommend it to others.

    Eilidh2018-12-03T00:00:00Z
  • Rosemary's place was absolutely beautiful! It was situated right in town and allowed for easy access to a lot in Stromness. She was also so accessible over email, and always responded very quickly to all of our questions. I would highly recommend staying with Rosemary!

    Bailey2018-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • The Orkneys, Stromness and our little cottage - a combination made in heaven! Before I talk about Rosemary and The Cottage... the Orkney experience is amazing. After driving around the Islands... Stromness is definitely the place to stay - it is just gorgeous. We loved it! Rosemary is quick to respond and most helpful. We travel a lot and use Airbnb regularly and we both agree that Rosemary's attention to detail and all the little extras she has thought of and generously provided definitely adds to the experience. We loved the cottage and felt right at home, cosy and comfortable. Thank you Rosemary... we hope to return.

  • I stay in hotels at least half the year for my work, so when we take a break I much prefer to stay at home to relax. Fortunately for me there's places like 40 Alfred St., which, despite the cliché, really is a home from home. Despite the mighty storm lashing at the windows it was very cosy inside, the multi-fuel burner warms the house in a jiffy. There was everything you could possibly need in the kitchen, which was very well appointed with high quality white goods. The bedrooms were decorated to a high standard, and very comfortable, although the entrance to the en-suite upstairs requires you to duck a fair bit - charming in its own way! The views out the windows were like ever-changing oil paintings of the sea, and if the weather is good enough there's a lovely little picnic table to eat al-fresco on your own private pier. Communication with the host, Rosemary, was always prompt and friendly, although I haven't told her yet that we inadvertently stole her coffee filter papers (sorry). Couldn't recommend this place highly enough, and we'll definitely be back...

  • We wouldn’t hesitate to stay in this lovely cottage again, it really made our trip to Stromness all the more special. So much care and attention has gone into making every room unique and comfortable we would find ourselves looking forward to returning at the end of the day and sitting up next to the fire! Great host, great communication and all the information we could need to get started! What are you waiting for?

    Stuart2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • It's a unique place with lots of personally collected items and the overall craftsmanship of the cottage makes you feel like you have been allowed to stay in someone's very special home.

    Angelika2019-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • Great wee cottage with fun fisherman theme. Easy to check in and out. The cottage is close to the town centre and nice and quiet. The bed was comfortable and the cottage very clean. The Hosts were really responsive when we had a question on the first day. All went very well and I would recommend staying here if you are planning a trip to Stromness.

  • Lovely quirky cottage ideally located in the centre of Stromness. Ideal for two.

    Anthony2019-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • Staying here is experience in its own right. The attention to detail in the design is extraordinary, it's like stepping into a museum/film-set whilst being an incredibly well equipped and practical space. The location is great, just a few minutes walk from the centre of town, very quiet at night but close enough for your fish and chips to still be warm by the time you get back! Stromness itself is a charming place, good amenities for its size and a great setting off point for anything you might want to see on the islands. If you get the chance to book into Fisherman's Cottage I would take it. It's a pretty unique place and staying there was one of the (many) highlights of our trip.

  • The Chalet is a totally adorable, comfy and beautifully clean space in an amazing location close to town. Angela was really helpful and accommodating - we arrived quite late on the ferry and she had the house warmed up and lights on, ready for us. The bread, butter and milk were lovely touches too. We just wish we had more time there!

  • Richard and I stayed at The Chalet for three weeks. It is a cosy, comfortable home that has been beautifully created by Angela. The view across to Hoy is magnificent and there are many lovely walks within easy access. Stromness is the nearest town with a range of individual shops, a great museum and of course the Pier Gallery. There is so much to see and do in Mainland Orkney and The Chalet is a great place to come back to at the end of the day. Angela is the perfect host. It was a sad day when we left! Thank you for everything Angela!

  • My partner and I stayed for 8 nights in the Chalet. What a wonderful place to stay! As other reviewers have already said, the location close to Warebeth Beach is stunning, with an incredible view and plenty of bird life close by (we even had a hen harrier roaming around outside). Angela has done a great job preparing the space for guests - it was clean and bright and we appreciated the thoughtful personal touches including a vase of flowers. Self check-in and check-out were simple and Angela was helpful responding to our queries. We thank Angela for hosting us and would thoroughly recommend the Chalet to all travellers.

  • The kitchen door looks out toward the Stones of Stenness in the distance. Perfect location for Neolithic monuments. Also has a washer for muddy trousers from crawling into tombs or falling in peat bogs. Perfect!

  • The Leverets was a such a lovely place to stay, the room was perfect and the amenities were everything we needed. The location was also great as it was right near the main Neolithic sites, including Maes Howe and the Ring of Brodgar.

  • It was cold and wet outside (Nov.) and after a soaking walk uphill from the bus stop I found the the rooms were snug and warm! Very welcoming, and a good choice. Within walking distance of Maeshowe, Ring of Brodgar etc., AND a bus stop, so a great location if on foot. I enjoyed myself, despite weather, and great views once the weather improved. Thanks Helen.

  • My partner and I really enjoyed our stay here— I never actually met Helen face-to-face, but her instructions from the ferry were very clear. She generously welcomed us with milk, bread, and Orkney fudge! We booked two nights here, and cozied up in the living room and watched a bunch of American movies on DVD. There is no wifi, but we enjoyed it all the same— it gave us an opportunity to really relax and slow our pace. There was also a washing machine, which proved very useful to us + some drying racks. We would definitely rent this place again!

  • Helen was a great host. By my arrival, i found milk, butter, bread and specialties of the island in the Kistchen- so nice! The apartment has everything you need and is very cosy. The view of the water is great!

  • A lovely place to stay. Great location for arriving off the ferry from Stromness. Accurate description for how to find the place. Very cosy, and useful to have kitchen facilities and also a living area to relax in. Great views as well. Was provided a loaf of bread which was a nice extra touch.

  • A great location for exploring the historical sites on Orkney! A comfortable and cozy apartment with private entrance. It had everything we needed. Helen was quick to respond and offered detailed and accurate directions and instructions well ahead of our trip which was helpful!

On the outskirts of the historic town of Stromness in the West Mainland of Orkney, this single-story barn conversion has one bedroom, an open-plan living/dining/kitchen space, and a bathroom with bath and walk-in shower. All on one level, the property is wheelchair accessible throughout. It has stunning views across Hoy Sound and out to the open Atlantic. Parking is available right outside, but if you visit without a car, regular buses from Stromness go to all areas of Orkney.
The building was converted four years ago from an old barn. It has a traditional, Orkney stone exterior, and an up-to-date and comfortable interior. Large windows on the seaward side flood the building with light, and give an unrestricted view across Hoy Sound. The kitchen and bathroom are stylish and modern. Slate floors throughout have underfloor heating, and there is a multi-fuel stove in the sitting room. There is a good stock of Orkney books and maps, as well as general reading material, board games, jigsaws and playing cards.
Innertown is in the parish of Stromness, within easy walking distance of the town centre, but we are surrounded by farmland, and close to the beach. Houses are widely spaced - we have a couple of fields between us and our nearest neighbours in each direction. There are footpaths along the shore, taking you to the golf course and the town of Stromness in one direction, or to the cliffs at Yesnaby and the neolithic village of Skara Brae in the other. Dominating the horizon are the heather-covered hills of Hoy: the highest hills in all of Orkney.
  • Jane's beautifully renovated house is amazing! The interior is very stylish yet functional and contains everything you need for a few days on the Orkneys. She even provided us with bread, coffee, tea and other breakfast essentials! The view from the house is breathtaking. Additionally, Jane answered very quickly and made sure that we were able to find the house immediately. She made us feel very much at home. Thank you so much for that wonderful stay! Definitely worth a visit!

    Eva2019-12-11T00:00:00Z
  • This is a wonderful relaxing soothing space to experience. The house and view and close proximity to the beach made my 3 days feel like a spa break. Highly recommend. I will be back soon.

  • If your looking for somewhere away from the hustle & bustle of every day life, this place is perfect. The view out the window are better than anything you'd see on a TV. Definitely need more than a long weekend to see everything these spectacular islands have to offer. Can't wait to return. Think we've found a home from home.

    Mandy2019-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • The only drawback of Jane's house is that you have to leave. The house is a jewel that makes your stay on the island more comfortable and personal. Everything is perfectly maintained, the comfortable bed, the kitchen is dreamy and the views, these views are a separate issue. Discovering the Orkney Islands is a wonderful experience, but if you stay in this house it will make it more unique and special

    Marta2019-11-19T00:00:00Z
  • Probably the best place to stay on Orkney. Toft is the perfect balance between peace haven and proximity to Stromness. We will undoubtedly be back on Orkney, and Toft is the first place we will be looking to book!

    Vincent2019-11-14T00:00:00Z
  • If your looking for beautiful views and amazing comfort , this is your place for an Orkney stay.

  • This is an oasis of calm and peace. Magnificent views over to Hoy, and all the creature comforts you would ever need. Fab comfy bed, excellent shower and a bath for a soak. The kitchen is thoughtfully kitted out with the best pans we’ve ever had making my scrambled eggs even better!! We’ve had a really lovely time staying here and plan to return. Thank you so much.

Comfortable holiday home in spectacular location with breathtaking views. Peaceful rural setting within walking distance of picturesque town.
The caravan is a little old fashioned but is well equipped with everything you should need during your stay. The accommodation comprises an open plan kitchen/dining/living area which is light and airy with plenty of storage space, double bedroom, small single bedroom, shower room and a separate toilet room. The water, electricity and plumbing are mains connected (no nasty chemical toilet!). There is a TV, Bluetooth speaker/radio, gas hob and cooker as well as a fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster. Range of cookware and crockery. The caravan is in our garden, a portion of which you are welcome to use. We are also happy to store bikes/camping/fishing/shooting equipment in our garage if required, just ask.
The caravan is ideally located to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside yet it is only a 10-15 minute walk from the town centre - of course even less by car or bicycle. The views are simply outstanding, overlooking the town, towards Orphir, over the island of Graemsay towards Hoy, right down Scapa Flow and out over the Pentland Firth towards mainland Scotland. Watch the fleet of dive boats head out Scapa Flow each morning and the Northlink passenger ferry “Hamnavoe” pass by the window throughout the day. We are surrounded by farmland with cows, sheep and crops - the cows can be quite inquisitive so don’t be alarmed to open the curtains in the morning to have one peeping in! And just a stones throw from Warbeth Beach with fantastic walks right on the door step. More than often, you’ll have the beach all to yourself. Stromness is a vibrant town with a population of around 2000. It is famous for its windy cobbled streets and waterfront houses, many of which have been there for over 300 years. There are 3 hotels and 3 pubs. The restaurants serve the best of Orkney’s fresh produce - the seafood will probably have been landed by one of the local fishermen that same day! The beef and cheese are world famous, not to mention Highland Park whisky and our ever growing range of local gins. There is a butcher, baker, deli and a couple of “peedie” cafes. It is well connected by a regular public bus service and a foot passenger ferry which runs daily to the islands of Graemsay and Hoy.
  • For peacefulness, tranquility and incredible views you'll find this place hard to beat. I absolutely loved my stay here and already planning to come back. The caravan itself is ever so slightly dated so dont expect a brand new one, but its spacious, ram packed with all the home comfort things and utensils you could ever need and the bed and the sofas are super comfy so what more could you ask for? I've already mentioned the views, but honestly, wow, they're something special! I could sit and look out the bay windows all day. 100% recommend.

    Edward2019-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying in Lois' caravan which has breathtaking views over the sea and Hoy beyond, words aren't enough, incredible. Loved watching the ferry going back and forth, the calves in the field below having a tussle with the ram, the weather changing, the light house and scapa flow beyond. We had a magical week on Orkney, so much to do, history, beautiful beaches, delicious local produce and very friendly. Lois was very discreet but immediately there to help if needed. Thank you so much.

  • The Braehead caravan is a great place to stay! The accomodation was very clean and everything we needed was there. Beautiful views from the living room windows. Highly recommended.

  • Such a lovely place and what a view! Super well equipped caravan, we are a family of four and had a great time. You have everything you need for a comfortable stay. A tip: ask Lois for directions to the caravan as the postal code and the google maps took us close but not quite there. Many thanks Lois.

    Mira2019-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • A comfortable caravan at a splendid place with a fabulous view and good accessibility to the centre of Stromness (whilst Stromness is generally a good base for exploring particularly the sites at Orkney Mainland). Great amenities including a gas heater/fireplace which allows to warm up the place nicely. Lois' was an amazing, swiftly and helpfully communicating host. Overall, an outstanding ABnB experience worthy of recommendation.

Number 42 is situated in the heart of Stromness within an iconic grade B listed stone building, known locally as "The Speedings." Its location in a quiet part of the street makes it very accessible - literally 1-2 minutes walk from the ferry terminal, bus station, pubs and shops. Ideal for guests who are travelling without cars but also perfect if you are driving, with short- term on-street parking right outside the front door and free long term parking at the back.
Laid out over 3 floors this is an unusual space but all areas are roomy, light and airy. The bathroom is situated right alongside the bedroom on the top floor with a living room in the middle (street level, John Street) and the kitchen/dining room on the lower level which also benefits from a (back) door. The house is well equipped, comfortable and cosy and has lovely street and harbour views. We think you'll be charmed by all it has to offer.
Stromness is Orkney’s second town. Its character has changed little in the last few hundred years being sandwiched between the sea and Brinkies Brae – the granite hill under which the town nestles. There is one main street which winds through the middle of the town, widening and narrowing seemingly as it pleases and, amazingly, still operating a two-way traffic system. The street changes names as it meanders through the town: Alfred street, Dundas street, Graham Place, Victoria Street, John Street…. All intersected by narrow closes and alleys along the way. The Speedings was an important and historic building in the town, being the home of our Lord Lieutenant, James Robertson. When it was built, the sea lapped at its foundations and boats were hauled into the sheds below before some notable land reclamation and the building of “Ferry Road.” There are several shops in the town and you can purchase freshly baked bread, fishing tackle and diving accessories amongst many other things. There are four bars and golf club with several cafes and licensed restaurants. The harbour is a busy working one, with fishermen, divers, salmon boats and a strong marine renewables presence.
  • Inga's place is great. Excellent location, shops and pubs nearby, and a great place to base yourself if - like us - you plan on exploring the islands. A perfect host too - quick responses to any queries and even posted me back a set of keys I had left at the property! Would definitely stay again.

  • Thanks for a great stay! Perfectly situated for the boat terminal and a great base on Orkney. Spotlessly clean and cosy house.

  • We had a great time and loved staying in The Speedings. The house was spotless, cosy, comfortable, well equipped and close to local amenities. It was great.

  • Number 42 was a great stay. If you're coming in on the Stromness ferry, it can't be beat for location. We were concerned about noise, but it was quite peaceful and we had some nice views. The free long-term car pack just next door made coming and going easy, as we had a car to travel the island. If you don't have a car, you're in the heart of Stromness. Just down the street are several cafes, restaurants, and shops. Inga gave clear and perfect instructions for arrival and managing the stay. When you're first let in, the keys are in the room to your immediate right. Everything was spotless (and I'm picky). When we arrived, after loading the password, we couldn't connect to the wifi until we unplugged it and plugged it in again. Meanwhile, I sent Inga a note and she was swiftly responsive, but it was already working. Number 42 has three levels connected by a spiral stairway. I used the railing to serviceably hang spun wash to dry as the weather was too variable to use the lines outside. The bathroom is next to the bedroom at the top of the stairs. We thought the decor touches upstairs were lovely. The bedroom felt like a little sanctuary, and the bed was comfortable. The kitchen level all the way downstairs has a little sitting area that proved to be light and airy with comfortable sofas. The operable windows upstairs were nice for changing air flow with the very changeable weather. We appreciated Inga's instructions about the heater on the kitchen level (what to do and what not to do). There's a french press for coffee. Bring your own coarse-ground as the co-op groceries didn't have grinding. Number 42 worked out wonderfully for us. I don't know when we will be back to the amazing Orkneys but we would stay here again. Thanks for the excellent hosting, Inga!

  • The cottage is cosy, very comfortable, perfect for 2 people; and the location is great. Ann is a super host. We did a few bike trips (e-bikes!), Stromness and grocery shopping is close by, and many of the Neolithic sights as well. Absolutely recommendable!

  • Ann’s Cottage is beautifully clean and well equipped, with an amazing view. We have had a great time, and were only 5 minutes in the car from Stromness and the ferry, or straight out into beautiful countryside. Stromness is a fantastic base, but it’s very easy to get around and we have covered much of the mainland in our 4 days. Feawell is a very comfortable and relaxing place to come back to after a days walking and sight seeing. Ann is a great host, who was helpful and generous with her garden produce!

  • This AirBnB is extremely comfortable and is well located near the harbour in Stromness. Lynn made us very welcome, even meeting us from the ferry in the pouring rain. From there we were easily able to explore Orkney using a hired car , from a local garage.

  • Nia-Roo is a great stay on a remarkable island. Lynn and her capable assistants provide a welcoming and attractive stay. The room has 2 comfortable leather lounges and the bed is very good. The windows are double glazed and the entrance has the traditional double doors. The bathroom was modern and very clean. The location is good for travel to Skara Brae UNESCO locations because it’s 20 minutes drive closer than Kirkwall. It’s a pleasant 10 minute walk along the harbour to Stromness town centre. Both pubs I tried (the Stromness Hotel and the Ferry Inn) offered very good food and service. There are also good shops and cafes in Stromness. I found great coffee each day at the Bayleaf Delicatessen. To top it off the Stromness Museum is an absolute gem.

  • Great location and hospitality! Sue was very helpful in directing us to various sights to see and restaurants while on Orkney. She also made sure our stay was very comfortable by providing an extra heater for the chilly November nights. Sue and her husband (Ian) definitely added to our memorable time on Orkney.

    Amanda2019-11-14T00:00:00Z
  • Quite simply the best Air BnB you can ask for. It’s my second time staying at the schoolhouse and it’s just fabulous. The hosts add nice touches like fudge, whiskey and robes that make all the difference and the room has its own private entrance and breakfast making en-suite. Perfectly situated within view of the Standing Stones and Maeshowe. This is where to stay when visiting Orkney!

The Puffin Pod looks over fields to the Harry Loch which is within walking distance for fishing. On a dark night if the Aurora Borealis ( or as we call them The Merry Dancers ) are out it can have a wonderful view.

  • Lovely view across the loch and hills, very close to all the major sites.

    Anne2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Great place that is very well equipped and the small space is very cleverly utilised. Location and views very private with only a single house (owner) nearby. Would stay again.

  • Lovely little place, aell designed and comfortable. Highly recommended

    Catherine2019-09-11T00:00:00Z

  • Great place to stay!

    Alfredo2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • This is an ideal place to stay if you fancy relaxing in the Orkney countryside for a few days. Two big features in its favour: the close proximity to sites on the West side of the mainland, and waking up to a fantastic view of the fields and loch. The Puffin Pod has only been running for a few months so everything is brand new, but has everything you could need. Donna is the best host you could wish for, you'll feel at ease straight away. One helpful hint to future guests - using Google Maps as satnav to find the place will only work if you put the name of the farm. I learned the hard way not to follow the postcode directions as ended up at a different farm running away from some rather snappy dogs. Thanks Donna, for being so welcoming and considerate! Would love to stay here again someday.

    Rose2019-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • Donna's Pod (mini house) was very cute, well decorated and really handy for such a small space. We felt very good. Donna is a very caring and friendly host. Orkney is an exciting island for its history and all the discoveries to be made! I recommend Bisway's ballad in Marwick. The price / quality ratio of the Pod is excellent! Thank you Donna.

    David2019-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • Great wee space, so clean and well thought-out, with lovely views and great hosts. Pretty good location-wise to check out the west side of the mainland.

Down by the sea, Pier House awaits you with a warm welcome. This traditional waterfront property is tucked away between the cobbled streets and the sea, overlooking the picturesque harbour of Stromness. Residents benefit from use of a seafront garden with seating area from where they can enjoy views down Scapa Flow and towards Hoy. The house has been refurbished and decorated to provide comfort and warmth to our residents, whilst retaining a strong sense of character.
Pier House is spacious and will be available to sleep three people between one large double room and one single. All rooms are elevated as the house sits above a large cellar so benefit from completely unrestricted views out over the harbour and out to Graemsay and Scapa Flow. The atmosphere is airy with plenty of natural light and rooms are cosy and comfortable. Pier House is well equipped, with all mod cons, including washing machine, tumble drier, electric cooker and oven, microwave, refrigerator, television, vacuum cleaner, Hi-Fi etc. There is a washing line outside in the garden. Pier House is non-smoking and we do not accept pets. Many additional features have made this house especially well loved by returning guests in the past.
The main part of Stromness has changed little in the last few hundred years. It remains sandwiched between the sea and Brinkies Brae – the granite hill under which the town nestles. It is Orkney’s second town, flourishing as a safe haven for shipping during the Napoleonic and other wars, as southern trade routes were fraught with danger. The Hudson’s Bay company also developed strong links with Orkney and their trading ships watered and took on stores here. Such activities made Stromness a very busy and important port and to the original small cluster of houses were added many more substantial town houses for local merchants, agents and ships captains. There are several shops in the town and virtually everything can be purchased here, from freshly baked bread to fishing tackle and diving accessories. There are five bars and several licensed restaurants all selling high quality locally sourced food.
  • We spent 4 fantastic days in William's house. William is a fantastic host. He even brought us to a few very interesting historic sites on the island. We highly recommend William's place in Stromness.

Set over three floors in a lovely location at the water’s edge, it is decorated nicely, beautifully clean, good bed linens, loads of thoughtful touches, quality appliances and laundry facilities... • We had a fantastic stay in Stromness. The house was lovely in so many ways. It was clean, comfy, and amazingly kitted out for self-catering. The views from the pier out back were stunning and the garden area was lovely too. I enjoyed sitting out on the pier early in the morning with a cup of tea, watching the water and the sea birds. It was very peaceful. There were plenty supplies of everything in the house and so many personal little touches that made us smile. Thank you so much and we hope to be back again in the future.

Grieveshouse is located in the heart of Orkneys UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a short drive from the ferry terminal in Stromness, and a stone's throw from the main bus route, local hotel and garage/fuel pumps.
Guests have sole use of the whole cottage and surrounding area. There is a garden to the front and back of the cottage, also for sole use by guests. Guests will find a picnic bench in the back garden and seating in the front.
The cottage is tucked away in a quiet location and is ideally situated for accessing some of Orkney’s main sites. There is a local hotel within walking distance serving food and drinks and a garage/post office a little bit further on where you can get fuel and basic groceries and have access to post office services.
  • Lovely house and Theresa was a friendly and responsive host. House was even nicer than the pictures showed and clean, warm and tastefully decorated. Location was great for us and close to main neolithic sites including the Stones of Stenness which could be seen from bedroom. An additional nice touch was Theresa's provision of some tasty local provisions. Would highly recommend and hope to stay again. Many thanks Theresa!

  • This cottage is so simple from the outside yet inside is pure luxury. Theresa has a great sense of style and fun and the decor is outstanding. Easy to fin, well situated and private parking. The best welcome pack left for us ever! All that and a duck in the back garden!

    Jim2019-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • This is a fantastic house, situated right in the middle of the mainland, so it was never too far to travel to anywhere. It was only a 5 min drive to all the Neolithic sights. The house was very comfortable and spotless. It had everything we needed and more. The owner left a starter pack of food and drink, most kind. This is one of the best houses we have ever stayed in.

    Melanie2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • Oh my, oh my — what a treasure of a place. Well stocked, beautifully designed and furnished, modern facilities, wood fire, and perfect hosts. The best Airbnb we’ve stayed in, and on our favourite island. Heaven.

Theresa was a great host who greeted us at the cottage when we arrived and was very easy to reach throughout the whole booking process and while we were there. Everything we could need was there and it was very clean as well. We would stay here again!

Garquoy is a modern self-catering apartment in a great location. The views of the harbour and hills beyond are fantastic and there is also a sheltered deck area to enjoy the outdoors. The apartment is a self-contained private flat within our house with it's own entrance and a locked connecting door so we are usually around if you need any help or advice.
Sorry but no smoking, no pets and no wild parties or events. If you have kids or special requests we will do our best to set things up for you in advance; cot, high chair, car seat - just let us know what you need.
We have private parking, elevated views and all just one minute down a lane from the picturesque Stromness town centre with a selection of great pubs, shops, galleries, supermarket etc. You really couldn't find a better location.
  • Great little spot with a brilliant view over the town. It's a bit tricky to find (because of the postal system they use in Stromness) but they provided detailed, step by step instructions. Great location, lovely and cosy place, hosts were terrific as well - highly recommended.

  • We had a great time at Yukas apartment. Everything was fine and uncomplicated.

    Jutta2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • Wow what a find!! If you ever find yourself in Stromness then this has to be the place to stay. A beautifully modern and spacious apartment in an elevated position with tremendous views over the harbour and surrounding countryside. Well equipped, warm and sparkling clean. Yukka is an extremely welcoming and accommodating host who was eager we enjoyed our stay and responded to any requests we had, which to be honest were few, as the apartment was above and beyond our expectation. The communication we had prior to our visit was excellent and access was as Yukka said it would be. This apartment comes highly recommended. Thank you so much.

    Noelle2019-09-11T00:00:00Z

    Andrew2019-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • A superb flat, newly renovated, full of light and space. The new renovations have been thoughtfully and beautifully done with lots of glass to give uninterrupted views across Stromness and the bay. The flat is surprisingly spacious for a 2-bedroomed apartment, with two really good bathrooms as well as two good-sized bedrooms. Everything seems to be new this year (2019) and the fixtures and fittings are stylish and good quality. The kitchen is tiny, but really well equipped with everything you need including sharp knives, decent pans, cafetiere and coffee machine, oven, microwave, hob, dishwasher, fridge and small freezer and all-new crockery and cutlery. I like cooking and felt I could cook in there despite the small scale. The hosts took away all those well-known little annoyances by leaving generous supplies of things like dishwasher tablets, kitchen cloths, tea towels, washing up liquid, shampoo, towels, loo-rolls. So simple to get that right, but so few people do. Anyway, all those things were great. Yuka responded really quickly to all my texts and messages, the arrangements for keys and so on were really straightforward (keybox with code which she sends you a few days before) and Yuka was charming when we met her. The hosts live upstairs so are there to answer any questions but leave you alone so as not to intrude on your privacy. There was good local information left for us in the flat. All in all, I recommend this place highly. I would certainly go back there if visiting Stromness again - and by the way, I do recommend visiting Stromness. It’s the perfect base for exploring the Orkneys, being near to the major neolithic sites and also near to ferries for island-hopping. Definitely go, and definitely stay in this apartment.

  • Lynwood is a very clean, comfortable and warm home (despite the cold winter weather!) Andrina has thought of and provided everything that would be expected and gone above and beyond with extra touches everywhere. The location couldn’t be better, convenient for both Kirkwall and Stromness with wonderful views and Andrina is a lovely host.

    Sarah2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • Andrina’s place was amazing! The cottage has everything you could need! The rooms are spacious and the kitchen is well stocked with trays and pans (which is more than we’ve had in other places). The welcome basket was really thoughtful and it was filled with local produce that sparked our tastebuds and led us to a few local produce shops. The apartment is fabulously clean and tidy, and well maintained. Andrina is communicative and came for a quick visit after we had checked in to see how we were settling in and make sure we have everything we needed. She even did us a huge favour and collected some post for us. We had an amazing week and this cottage was so great we have already recommended to a friend for their visit.

  • This house is spotless, amazingly well equipped and the host was generous and thoughtful. Would definitely recommend.

Also there is a decent pub & restaurant within a short walk and Stromness and Kirkwall just a brief drive away. Andrina was a helpful & welcoming host and easily contactable.

    Jane2019-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • Loved the local products in the kitchen. Everything was ideal for our stay. Got a nice tip from Andrina - so we found Orkney's hidden gem. :) Thank you

    Ildi2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely little cottage which is actually very spacious. It has everything you need from a well kitted out kitchen to a lovely modern bathroom. The cottage was cosy and warm and there was more than enough hot water for all 4 of us to shower. It would be ideal for two couples or a small family like us as the kids could play outside in the garden. It is ideally located for seeing all the sights and not clocking up the miles. You are only a short distance from both of the main towns on the mainland. The village of Stenness has a garage and general store that sells almost everything you could want, an ice-cream shop(a must) and Standing Stones Hotel which when we stayed wasn't serving food but usually does. I would recommend this to anybody who wants a relaxing, comfy break in Orkney.

    Carrie2019-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • Andrina's house in Stenness is fantastic. It is perfectly positioned for exploring the West Mainland and all the amazing archaeological sites. You can even see the Ring of Brodgar, the Standing Stones of Stenness and the Ness from the kitchen window. The house is very well modernised, the kitchen facilities are excellent, and the bedrooms and beds are really comfortable. Thanks Andrina. We will definitely come again if we need accomodation in Orkney!

  • A great spot near the standing stones of Stenness. Within walking distance, there is a gas station with provisions (10:30-7pm), a delicious ice cream shop, the standing stone inn (with restaurant and pub), a bus stop, and the stones themselves. It is an easy drive into both Kirkwall and Stromness. The whole island is very accessible from here. The house itself is very clean, warm, and comfortable. There were nice welcome amenities upon our arrival. The kitchen equipment is very well stocked. We enjoyed our stay very much and would definitely recommend.

An beautiful old fisherman’s house built with the help of salvaged ships beams and masts, Harbour Cottage is one of Stromness’ original houses pre-dating any modern record keeping. Sitting on the harbour front and directly across from the ferry terminal, and just meters from Stromness town centre – Harbour Cottage really is in the heart of this beautiful town known as The Venice of The North.
Step inside Harbour Cottage and you’ll find a beautifully refurbished and unique house, with a separate kitchen/dining room leading to a sitting room with w/c and shower room downstairs. Upstairs are two double bedrooms with one overlooking the harbour front.
Orkney will immerse you in its rich tapestry of dramatic landscapes, amazing sunsets, stunning flora and fauna all mixed in with a rich culture 5,000 years in the making. Add this to one of the richest archaeological landscapes anywhere in the world, the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site, then you know you have arrived in a place like no other. From the spectacular and iconic Ring of Brodgar, to Maeshowe – the finest Neolithic tomb in Northern Europe, or the Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae – one of the best preserved groups of prehistoric houses in Western Europe, Orkney Apartments puts on the doorstep of Neolithic Orkney. You can even visit the live dig at The Ness of Brodgar – recently featured nationally on the BBC as well as the front cover of National Geographic magazine, this 3 hectare site filled with massive stone structures containing unique and spectacular finds is without parallel in Europe. On your doorstep is Stromness – ‘the haven inside the bay’ – with its beautiful stone piers leading from a cobbled street uncoiling like a sailors rope along the seafront, Harbour Cottage will provide you with an idyllic setting and perfect location to base your stay. We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful islands.....
  • Excellent location, clean and cosy with good facilities

    Pauline2019-07-10T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at David's cottage for a diving holiday in Stromness. The cottage was perfectly situated close to public transport and a short walk away from Scapa Scuba as well as the nearest grocery store. We really enjoyed relaxing in the recliner sofas in front of the fireplace in the evenings.

    Randi2018-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is lovely and clean. It is very convenient being just across from the ferry and bus stop for getting to Kirkwall etc.

A large and bright bungalow, with spectacular views over sea. A fantastic place to get away with the family or just by yourself, this well equipped house is suited for all ages. Clairmount is close enough to walk to Stromness’ amenities but far enough away to really enjoy Orkney’s countryside and peacefulness. As a much loved family home it’s decor reflects the family’s love of travelling, so there are many interesting things to find and enjoy from around the world.
The Kitchen - Clairmount has a fully equipped kitchen, ideal for cooking your own meals. It also has a dishwasher, microwave, American style fridge/freezer, large kitchen table and tv. Living room - The living room has large windows which show off the fantastic 180 degree views of the Hoy hills, Scottish mountains and Scapa flow. There are two armchairs and a two seater sofa, as well as a traditional Orkney chair. If you are a fan of reading there are many books to enjoy, as well as a large wide screen tv and board games. Master Bedroom - This bedroom consists of a super king bed, tv and chest of drawers for storing your things. The windows look out onto both the front and back garden. Double Room - This room has a double wardrobe for storage and dressing table which has additional drawers. The window looks over the back garden and greenhouse. Single room - the single room has a chest or drawers in it, as well as a double built in wardrobe. The window looks over the back garden and green house. Extra Bed- We also have an extra single pull out bed which can be set up anywhere you want. Please let us know in advance if you require it. Bathroom - the bathroom has a toilet, sink, bath and power shower in it. Utility Room - In here this is a washing machine and tumble dryer. There is also another wash room and toilet attached. If you prefer to air dry your washing, there is a walk in wardrobe attached to the kitchen which is very warm and ideal for drying washing/coats/boots. There is central heating/air conditioning throughout the house. There is also free WIFI available. There are many different out buildings for dogs so this would be an ideal house for shooting holidays throughout the winter.
We are very close to Stromness which has a variety of pubs, restaurants, shops and and a Chinese! If you need a larger super market other than a coop, we are around 25 minutes away from Tesco and Lidl in Kirkwall. Many of Orkneys main archeological sites are a short drive away, as well as the many fantastic beaches and Orkneys numerous fishing lochs.
  • A perfect place to escape for a while, with a beautiful view and good facilities. Great for a family, but also cosy enough for two to stay.

    Helen2019-10-03T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our trip to orkney and clairmount was a perfect choice for accommodation! The house was clean, spacious and very comfortable with everything we required provided!

    Peter2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • Really enjoyed our stay at Eilidh’s place. The setting is beautiful and the house is spacious, clean and comfortable. The key box makes check-in really easy. Fantastic views out to Hoy each morning were a highlight. We hired a car as we were touring round the archeological sites. It’s not a venue that is served by public transport, but is an easy 25 minutes walk into Stromness for dinner and drinks in the evening ... Looking forward to a return trip, to visit some of the smaller islands too. Meg

    Meg2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • Eilidh's house is a fantastic spacious and comfortable base, above Stromness but not remote, for visiting the Neolithic sites and travelling all over Orkney. The views over to Hoy from the sitting room are spectacular. There is lots of space, the beds are comfortable and the shower and heating work well. The kitchen is large and very user friendly. We were really pleased to have found this house for our visit to Orkney.

    Anne2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • Eilidh’s place is perfect for seeing Orkney by car. Most of the sites on Orkney are very nearby. The house was roomier than we expected and had great views of Hoy and the Atlantic. We were able to walk down into Stromness and to a local beach as well. Very laid back sort of place. If we came back to Orkney, we would definitely look to stay here again. Thanks!

    Patrick2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • Great stay. Location is great and view from property is amazing

    Graeme2019-07-30T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our week at Eilidh's place. We visited many parts and sites of Mainland, some by car, others by bike (rented in Stromness) or using the bus from Stromness travel centre (at the ferry landing) and even hiking from Skara Brae back to the house (5 hours). The location worked fine for all of these, but a twenty minute walk is required to get to the bus and to town. Written instructions how to find the house would be helpful, as it does not have a street address.

    Eva2019-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had a bit of trouble finding the place and found it a bit chilly at first - but it warmed up quickly and was a spacious and comfortable setting with beautiful flower gardens and views.

Stylish self-catering in a detached bungalow at the south end of Stromness with stunning sea views. A unique and welcoming space, Kilmallie was built in the 1960s to designs by the local painter Stanley Cursiter. Recently renovated and in a quiet location with free on street parking. Close to the golf course and within easy walking distance of the town. Two comfortable double bedrooms, one with king size bed. Well equipped kitchen, shower room and generous lounge with log burner and a piano.
Bedrooms are furnished with one (UK) King Size bed and one (UK) Standard Double. Both have comfy, award winning 'Emma' mattresses and 'Baavet' natural wool filled duvets, plus 100% cotton bedding. The larger bedroom may be converted to a family room with the addition of a small single 'put-up' bed, on request. The well-equipped kitchen-diner has an induction hob, electric oven/grill and fridge freezer. There is a washing machine and tumble drier and washing liquid is provided, as are tablets & rinsaid for the dishwasher. In the kitchen you will also find tea, coffee, a selection of basics, seasonings, oils and condiments which I hope will help if you choose to prepare your own meals whilst staying. The bathroom has a powerful, walk-in shower, a generous washbasin, a shaver socket and a heated towel rail. Fresh, Fluffy Egyptian Cotton towels are provided, as well as a supply of toilet tissue, shower gel and shampoo. (I do not provide toiletries in small, individual bottles, in an effort to reduce plastic waste.) The bookcase in the lounge is stocked with a selection of Orkney books, as well as some popular and classic fiction. There is a 50" smart TV, a smart speaker for you to listen to internet radio or to play your own music, and a selection of board games in the cupboard beneath the TV. And, should you wish to light the stove, some logs and firelighters are supplied. Please feel free to play the piano!
Stromness has many attractions beyond the natural beauty of its location, the tightly-packed traditional houses and the narrow flag-stoned streets. The old town hall is now the excellent town museum and well worth a visit. The Pier Arts Centre has an impressive collection of art and sculpture including works by Barbara Hepworth and paintings by Stanley Cursiter, the artist responsible for the original designs for Kilmallie. The town also boasts an excellent independent bookshop, a well stocked deli, a bakery, and a selection of small galleries and craft shops, as well as some great pubs, coffee shops and eateries. The Ferry Inn and the Hudson Lounge both provide excellent evening meals and a selection of local beers, with a variety of tastes and diets catered for. For provisions, Argo's Bakery stocks a selection of basic groceries and there is a Co-op Supermarket at the north end of the town (beyond the ferry terminal). There is also an independent pharmacy in the heart of the old town.

The house is 1 mile outside Finstown, in a quiet country setting. There are lovely views across to the Stenness and Harray Lochs. Finstown is on the main road between Stromness and Kirkwall.
The bedroom, has a new king-size bed (2019). Guests have a private bathroom, which is opposite the bedroom. You have the sole use of the sun lounge to relax in. All guest accommodation is on the ground floor (the hosts live upstairs). Outside there is a large garden with a sheltered seating area for guests to enjoy. A continental style breakfast is offered (cereal, yogurt, fruit, croissants, Scottish morning rolls or homemade wholemeal bread, as well as Orkney cheese and oatcakes). Tea and coffee is available in the bedroom. When you book, we are full!
We enjoy living in a quiet cluster of houses with open views. Finstown has a local shop and a garage for fuel. The house is centrally located for many of Orkney's attractions. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is within 5 miles. Kirkwall and Stromness are both about 7 miles away, where there are plenty of places to eat out. It is advisable to book a table in some of the more popular places. Finstown is on the St Magnus Way, a popular established pilgrimage walk, which has a downloadable app. I would be happy to pick you up or drop you of at the waymarker stone in Finstown.
  • Amanda was a wonderful host and made us feel so welcome in her beautiful home. I would highly recommend her to anyone wanting a stunning holiday in the Orkneys.

    Lucinda2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Amanda’s place right in the middle of Neolithic Orkney. Initially we wanted to leave with the early ferry the next morning, but then delayed our departure to the afternoon - meanwhile Amanda was great supporting us, whatever plan we had, and even figuring out breakfast options for an almost night time check-out, if needed. We really appreciated that she was so flexible. Responses were really fast. Her hint to book Maeshowe in advance was valuable. Breakfast was delicious and the view sitting at the breakfast table fabulous and much inspirational! We enjoyed our conversation with Amanda at breakfast a lot. Amanda sells some little hand crafted things and we bought one of her painted Neolithic Orkney Panoramas on a postcard for less than you would usually pay at gift shop - and it will always remind us of the good times we had at her place and the Orkneys. Amanda is an outstanding host! Highly recommended!

    Clarissa2019-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at Amanda’s place. She was super thorough about getting us everything we might have needed, including info about sightseeing and food recommendations. Her house is in a great spot on Orkney, convenient both to Kirkwall/distilleries and to the main prehistoric sites. Great bang for buck compared to hotels in the area that charge twice as much for significantly less comfortable accommodations.

    Carrie2019-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • Really lovely room with own bathroom and private living room in Amanda’s home - I loved the underfloor heating and the spacious bathroom.

    Debbie2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Amanda's house is warm, elegant and welcoming! She and her husband really made us feel at home. It's the perfect place to visit Mainland.

    Claudia2019-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Amanda's house is modern, warm, light-filled, comfortable and SO nice! Amanda welcomed us and we felt at home straight off. We had a lovely bedroom, modern spacious bathroom, and a reading/relaxing room to ourselves. Breakfast was superb. Wonderful views at this rural setting. Car parking at the door. Honestly, we cannot recommend highly enough.

    Bill2019-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely experience with Amanda, her house was very beautiful, peaceful, clean and stylish. She concerned about having everything perfect (breakfast included) to make our stay better, she even helped us to plan our trip to Island of Hoy, calling a local driver to pick us up there. Amanda was the best host of the whole 15 days of trip in Scotland. We would love to visit Orkney again and we have no doubt that we will repeat with her. Thanks a lot.

    Marina2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • Such a good time with Amanda... everything is perfect! The location is excellent to discover the main island, the room and the bathroom are perfectly clean, the bed is really comfy and the place so quiet! The breakfast is huge (with the bread home made) and the view amazing. Amanda is the perfect host, really lovely to chat with, give you excellent advices, and leave you some space and privacy. I highly recommend!!!

And having a wood burning fire was lovely for the time of year. Like a home from home. The location of the house is ideal for getting to all the historical sites. I’d highly recommend.

Our place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, and furry friends (friendly pets who can cope with farm animals and other pets). Set in the parish of Sandwick in rural Orkney surrounded by farmland, approximately 1.5 miles from the sea at Skaill beach and Skara Brae and approximately 4 miles from the ancient Ring of Brodgar, Standing Stones of Stenness and the recently discovered Ness of Brodgar which is currently being excavated.
The cottage is very recently completely refurbished to a very high spec. Fully fitted kitchen with Rayburn oil fired range, fridge, washer dryer, microwave, dishwasher, coffee machine and ice maker. Underfloor heating in bedroom, en-suite and bathroom (shower, no bath) and original flagstone floor in living room which also features a wood/peat/coal burning stove and sofa bed if required meaning the cottage can cosily accommodate up to four people. Clean towels and bedding provided. Digital TV in living room, kitchen (+ DVD)and bedroom, CD player/radio and lots of books to read.
Ideal for loch fishing in season (hire of loch boat and details of gillie available), shooting in season, walking and relaxing in a very beautiful and quiet location. Fantastic views of stunning countryside including the hills of Hoy (snow peaked in the winter) and Harray loch which is less than half a mile away and boasts some of the best trout fishing in Orkney. Closely situated to a number of RSPB nature reserves, many species of birds spend time in Orkney including many types of sea birds, waders, hen harriers, owls and puffins which can be spotted at Marwick Head a few miles from the cottage.
  • Great hosts and a fantastic location. All in all a magical trip.

    Claire2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Doehouse Cottage was an exceptional place to stay. It was in the perfect location for tourism, was sparking clean, very cosy (especially with the coal fire), and had excellent and modern facilities inside. The bed and bedding were snug and allowed us to sleep very well, regardless of what the weather was doing outside. Sam & Lee were the perfect hosts, leaving us to get on with our holiday, and only contacting us when we wanted to chat with them. They left some useful tourist information for us, including very important tide tables.

    John2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • We had a very pleasant stay at Doehouse Cottage. Sam and Lee are great hosts which also provide a lot of useful information about what to see and where to find things on the island. The cottage offers a lot of nice features and is very cosy and comfy. We really enjoyed the view over the Loch and it´s unbelievable quiet there. Just the lovely sound of the animals and wildlife all around!

    Leif2019-10-02T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely little cottage with everything you could need, did some much needed washing, and got it all dry over the aga, which was a joy to have, would definitely recommend staying here very comfortable

    Michelle2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Lee and Sam’s place is in the right place for touring all around the main island. Cosy, modern and every detail covered. Yoga on the lawn amongst the chickens- brilliant.

    Didi2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • Our first time on Orkney and it couldn’t be better. Lee and Sam are outstanding hosts: totally unobtrusive but there if and when you need them. Doehouse Cottage is a wonderful conversion with everything and more than you need. Who thought you could fall in love with an ice making machine. Made our nightly G&Ts almost bearable! The cottage is in a fabulous area and Sam goes that extra mile by leaving you a personal list of what is on locally the duration of your stay. If you like cats you’ll love it, and if you like chickens you’ll be in heaven.

    Andy2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at the Doehouse Cottage! It was so comfortable and cozy with a great kitchen and modern bathroom. It was easy to find, not too far from city center but you will want a car. The views are breathtaking. Sam and Lee were easy to communicate with, quick to answer and so helpful. We stayed for a week and it really felt like 'coming home' after a day of hiking or sightseeing. We hope to return to Orkney some day and will definitely check to see if Sam and Lee's cottage is available.

    Diane2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • Lee and Sam's place is a beautiful & serene piece of bliss. The cottage is spacious and fits with Orkney - has a slate floor, woolens all-around with a modern kitchen and bathroom. It is warm and cozy and so very comfortable. We visited as a family and our girls fell in love with their surroundings and the animals. Sam also found some fun toys for them to play with. The place is sparkling clean. We were provided with a full and equipped kitchen. Sam and Lee are a wealth of information, they were able to provide whatever we needed. They are also centrally located to all the sites - Ring of Brodgar, Ness of Brodgar, Maeshowe, Stones of Stenness, Skara Brae and more. The Orkney Isles are absolutely a once (or twice) in a lifetime must. You will fall in love with the landscape and the people. If you have not seen them - you must do so and this cottage is the place to stay. Thank you, Lee and Sam - we hope to see you again and hope to be back!
