Places to stay in Waiomu
Nestled amongst a beautiful private jungle garden and citrus orchard, only a few steps away from the beach. This beachside get-away is perfect for solo travellers and couples. The spacious cabin and separate full bathroom were completely renovated in July 2017. Equipped with all the necessities you need for a relaxed stay. Enjoy the peace and curl up with a book or wander along the stunning Coromandel coastline. A perfect spot for swimming, fishing, paddle boarding, kayaking or even kitesurfing.
Our guests love the location, with the cabin in amongst the fruit trees listening to birdsong and just a few steps to the beach, it really is ideal. We are passionate about the environment and have used recycled materials where possible. The cabin is set in a citrus fruit orchard, help yourself to free fruit ! We love travelling and have made our space as cosy as possible, we always welcome new ideas and feedback. If you want the perfect getaway, away from the city, away from WIFI, just pure chill and relax, you will find it here. The cabin can be set up with an additional single bed (floor mattress) including bedding, ideal for a child or additional guest.
The neighbourhood is very friendly, people will say hello. There is a fantastic coffee shop / cafe / restaurant / pizzeria only 5 minutes drive away. Small shop with takeaways about a 5-10 minute walk. Thames is 10-15 min drive (i recommend driving slowly to enjoy the breathtaking view) and there you will find a full supply of shops, supermarkets, the famous Saturday markets and much more
  • The place was super cool and a great stay with your own private bathroom and kitchen which was lovely! Very cute stay that had privacy, was clean, and a nice space to relax in 😊

  • Cosy & romantic cabin set beside a beautiful beach on the coast. Glass of wine to watch the sunset was a great tip by the host. Super comfy bed, clean and well designed space. We could only stay the one night but would highly recommend staying longer!

    Darragh2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Natalie and Craig’s place is a perfect getaway - we came just for a couple of nights to have a break while the grandparents looked after the kids, and it couldn’t have been better. The beach is literally seconds away, the cabin itself is cosy and secluded, and Natalie and Craig are very attentive hosts, whilst also giving you total privacy. We will (hopefully!) be back.

    Ruth2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful cabin, really a special place to be! If you are a bit tall (1,80m +) be prepared not to be able to stand up straight in all of the cabin. Did not matter much to us anyway, we had a great time! Natalie and Craig put up a mosquito net, which is very helpful as there are quite some of them. In short: recommended!

    Huub2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay in the tiny house. Natalie was very accommodation and gave us great recommendations when we arrived. The little touches in the place made it very homely and we wished we could have stayed for more than one night. The place is right on the beach so great to relax, have a swim and watch the sunset. Very nice to unwind for a short stay.

    Martin2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • A good retreat after a hard days travelling. All very good value! You have your own private space and are just a few paces away from the beach. One downside I found, although the host provides a microwave, hot plate, saucepan and frying pan there are no dishes to use to put in microwave or to whip an egg up. This makes cooking very difficult!

    Sarah2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • Surprising on the outside but the interior was perfectly functional the necessary for cooking and clean

    Marc2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • Private little cabin with a comfortable bed. Very friendly host, and an extra large size bar fridge which held all our cold goods and bottles with ease. I would recommend it, it was really nice. Great access to the beach. Loved travelling to explore all of Coromandel.

Set on a hill over looking the Firth of Thames. Beautiful sunsets, and on occasion dolphins and orcas visible from your front door. Bush walks, river swimming holes and the beaches and fishing spots all within walking distance. Our friendly German Shepherd Dog has the run of the property, so although the unit is downstairs and fenced off from the main property, guests must be ok with dogs.

    Anna2019-05-30T00:00:00Z
  • Kathleen's place is located in the beautiful Kauaeranga valley close to the Pinnacles hike. You'll enjoy a stunning view of the valley while staying there. Kathleen is an attentive host and prepared an amazing breakfast before I headed out for my hike. Every morning I was greeted by Prince, the curious 1-year mini-horse :). Overall a lovely place to spend some quiet time.

    Christine2019-05-24T00:00:00Z
  • Kathleen and Steve are great hosts and very warm people.

    Angela2019-04-20T00:00:00Z
  • They have llamas! In the evenings there was a wonderful fire to sit in front of. Very friendly cats. Kathleen made an amazing breakfast for me. The valley is gorgeous to look out on.

    Andrew2019-04-18T00:00:00Z
  • Kathleen and her family were fantastic hosts. The surroundings and the house were amazing and the view from the terrace was stunning. Everything was like in the pictures. There was a lovingly prepared breakfast and I have received many tips for things to do in Coromandel. With the little horses, the llamas, dogs and cats, you really felt like you were on a farm. I highly recommend the place.

    Jennifer2019-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • Best Airbnb stay I ever had, her breakfast is amazing and it comes with a view, and the bed is sooo comfy :) loved it! And I’m def not an easy to please guest

    Britta2019-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • I had a great time at Kathleen’s beautiful farm. The room was very comfortable and clean. The view from the veranda very scenic and at night perfect to enjoy the milky-way while cuddling their friendly dog. Moreover, Kathleen prepared a perfect breakfast with fresh scrambled egg for me and gave me great tipps for the rest of my journey. And her husband introduced me to the cute mini horses and lamas. I would definitely come back and can highly recommend to stay there.

    Leonie2019-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • Kathleen and Steve were so lovely and made me feel very comfortable during my stay. Kathleen went to such efforts to prepare a lovely breakfast for myself, and the views from their property were incredible - It was a very lovely stay.

  • For people wishing to travel to Thames, NZ, I would recommend Bruce and Annes’ BNB. It is centrally located in a quiet neighbourhood very close to the Coast. You'll find that accommodation extremely clean, comfortable and suitable for couples. The hosts are warm welcoming and comforting after a long days drive. Sadly, our itinerary allowed us only one night stay there.

You’ll love our place because of the views and the location. Our place is good for couples and solo adventurers. Anyone wanting to kick back and relax with a drink on their personal beachside deck. This property is an oldie but a goodie. They don't make them like this anymore. Our beachside location is unique.
Waiomu Bay is a mix of full time residents and holiday homes. We've got a mix of residents ranging from retired right through to young families.

  • The accommodation with John and Rose was great. There were four of us (two adults, a three-year-old and a baby) Everything went well. It doesn't matter that there are no hotplates, because otherwise there is really everything there is even a grill that we have used extensively. Rose has been very, very hospitable and caring. Thank you very much and my god the view of the sea is amazing at sunset. Thank you very much and best regards

"Wens Place" is a delightful 1 bedroom cottage in a peaceful and private bush setting. Fully self contained with everything you need to for a fabulous holiday. Set in the bush above the town, it has the tranquility of the bush but is only a few minutes from Thames. The hosts live next door but your privacy is assured. There is ample room to park your boat if required. Thames is the Gateway to the Coromandel Peninsula and is not far from all the beautiful beaches including Hot Water Beach.
The bedroom has windows and french doors on three sides all surrounded by bush with pathways all around. Theres a deck leading from the frenchdoors with a BBQ. At the front of the cabin is a private outdoor patio with table, seating and an umbrella. inside is a pot belly fire with firewood supplied for those chilly evenings.
The west coast of the peninsula is quite stunning and differs from the east coast (which has beautiful long, sandy beaches) in that a lot of the coastline is rocky with some sandy beaches. The rocks are covered in oysters and the mussel farms in the firth attract the fish, mainly snapper so the fishing over the farms is usually very successful. Being an old gold mining town theres some lovely old buildings and the hills around Thames are covered in old gold mines and shafts. Many of the walking tracks in the areas are dotted with old gold mine shafts, so if you're not keen on swimming, fishing or diving theres plenty of great walks with a bit of history thrown in.
  • Great hosts, very generous, many thanks!

    Bastian2020-05-03T00:00:00Z
  • The house is a real treasure among the forest, we loved to stay there and this fire place to keep us warm, so cosy.. We would definitely come back again, Wendy and Doug are very kind people

    Mathieu Et Marion2020-03-28T00:00:00Z
  • So glad we chose this place, I don't think the photos really do it justice. It is cozy but big enough and very comfortable, bed is warm, very well stocked kitchen including oven so you can cook properly. Lovely to have windows on 3 sides in bedroom, Wendy and her partner left us to our own devices which was perfect for us. Extra touches like the stereo, candle, plenty of herbal teas as well as regular tea, made us feel at home. Pak N Save is a short drive away. We would definitely come back if in Thames again.

    Catherine2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic accommodation. Private, sparkling clean, comfortable with lots of lovely touches. Great location and so quiet. The road and driveway up to the premises is a bit bumpy, but fine when you get used to it! Would love to come and stay again.

This is a free standing studio, light, airy & ambient, with french doors leading to your own private deck and overlooking an old fashioned orchard. Recently refurbished, modern ensuite, tasteful colours and a top quality queen sized bed. Limited kitchen facilities include microwave, electric frypan, hotplate and and an outdoor barbeque. Cutlery, crockery, glassware etc are provided.
Situated in a secluded valley with an abundance of native bird life, and just 5 mins walk from town. The nearest beach is only a kilometre or so away. We do things a little differently, in that we try to keep cost down and cater to the budget traveller who is prepared to provide their own linen, and to clean up leaving the space as you find it. The base fee is calculated around you doing the cleaning and providing your own bedsheets, pillowcases and towels [ warm duvets and pillows provided for you]. If you'd like us to take care of these things then an extra one off fee of $15 for linen and $20 for cleaning is charged, please advise at time of booking.

  • Wow such an amazing spot! This was the coolest accommodation I have stayed at in a long time. The bus is so cool. All the beds arw super comfy and can be great for groups or just a romantic getaway. The amenities are great. The kitchen facilities are very rustic and cozy. Location is perfect for exploring the Coromandel. The whole place is set up for guests to relax and Rebecca is just the nicest person to deal with. Highly recommend staying here.

Our cabins are a great option for those seeking affordable Coromandel Peninsula accommodation but not quite ready to jump into a tent. A basic cabin with polished wooden floors, 2 or 4 bunk beds and a queen bed, + bar fridge, TV and hot drinks. No sink. The ablution and kitchen facilities are 40 to 60 meters from the cabins and offers hot showers, toilets and a covered cooking area with gas hobs, fridge and fully equipped with crockery and utensils. We have six cabins available.
Te Mata Lodge is set in a hidden valley within a kilometer of Te Mata Bay. Situated on 10 acres of grassy lawns, gardens and native bush. The Te Mata River borders the property and provides private opportunities for swimming and kayaking, gemstone gathering, gold panning and river walking. BBQs, picnic areas and benches are situated under the trees along the river for meals, a quiet cup of tea, shared bottle of wine or peaceful contemplation. The abundance of native bush and birds make for idyllic peacefulness as your Coromandel Accommodation
The nearest settlement is Tapu where there is a local convenience store and take-away meals are available; as well as a pub that offers nice meals at a reasonable price. Alternatively a full range of shopping and dining options can be found 25 minutes drive to Thames, or 35 minutes to Coromandel township. Within 10 minutes drive are opportunities for fishing charters, boat and kayak hire, shell-fish gathering, water and sculpture gardens, cafes, and walks through native forest to centuries-old kauri trees. 25 minutes away you will discover museums, art galleries, rich gold mining heritage, and mountain biking in Thames.
  • Friendly people. Great value in true classic kiwi style. Took us back to childhood summer holidays. We are returning this week for a longer stay. Plenty more bush tracks to explore.

  • Myself and my friend had a wonderful stay at Te Mata Lodge. The cabin was very clean and comfortable and was located right beside a lovely lake which we could swim and kayak in. The hosts were so lovely and offered lots of tips about the area. The lodge itself is situated in an ideal location- quiet and tranquil but close enough to all the hotspots the peninsula has to offer! Would definitely recommend.

  • We spent a number of weeks here during the level 4 lockdown period and loved it here. Location is spot on for walking, fishing etc....just a few steps to 2 beautiful beaches which our kids loved. House has everything you need and the big garden was also a hit with the kids. We hope to return in future and see more of this beautiful area and the wider coromandel region once the pandemic restrictions are lifted.

  • Joanne and Brian’s Tapu house is fantastic. Well set up with everything you could need. Best water pressure we have ever experienced up on the coast. Brilliantly set up for those who love their fishing (like ourselves) it is only 10 minutes from the Waikawau boat ramp. The fish filleting station was well used in our two day stay. We will most definitely book again!!!

The HIlltop is a warm, comfortable house that should suit anyone wanting to spend some time in the area.
The house has 3 bedrooms, one of them a dedicated space for airbnb guests. The kitchen & bathroom are both modern with everything guests will need for a comfortable stay. There is a great deck for outside dining in nice weather.
Thames is a great town to live in. Its the gateway to the Coromandel & all it has to offer. It has lots of cafes & other eating places to enjoy. Goldmining was big in the regions heyday so there is plenty to learn about that period.
  • Jo is friendly, hopeful and kind lady.

And it’s a good base to enjoy the walks (nice one to Hoffman pool 12km away and Pinacles further on the same road) and the rest of the Peninsula.

For a cosy private feel with views the Chalets are a great option. Featuring a riverstone hand basin and solid wood vanity and benches the decor celebrates the bush and river surroundings. They are set back about 50m uphill from the river and offer a cosy option with a kitchenette and small lounge that opens out onto a deck that overlooks the scenic bush and river valley. The covered deck means that you can enjoy BBQ's and outdoor dining all year round.
In 2013 our family settled in the beautiful Te Mata Valley. On first sight we fell in love with the property and the potential it has. Originally built as a youth camp in the 60's Te Mata Lodge has a nostalgic kiwi holiday feel. There are a total of four other self contained units and a bunch of cabins however spread out on 10 acres and 500 meters of river access there is plenty of space to enjoy your privacy. This is our home; the place we have chosen to raise our children. We are an extended family with Murray and Dorothy, their daughter Jovana and husband Michael and their three young children living on the property. Te Mata Lodge is a labour of love and we take great pleasure in seeing our guests enjoy the property and all it has to offer. A point to note for families is that the chalet is best suited for couples. It is available for families however due to the step stairs up to the loft with the two single beds we advise it is not suitable for todlers or anyone unsteady on their feet.
Te Mata Lodge is situated just off the beautiful Pohutukawa Thames Coast. It is a short 15 minute walk to the beach, we have a local pub and convenience store 5 minutes drive down the road
  • We stayed at Michael place for almost two weeks during the lockdown in New Zealand during the outbreak of the Corona virus. It truly was a lockdown in paradise! The lodge is clean, cosy and you can feel that they just take care of it all and all the details. The lodge is located in a giant private nature paradise with a river where you can swim, funny chickens and a lot of other cute (wild) birds you can spot. Michael and his family where so hospitable and we wish them all the best! Would love to stay there again.

  • This place is so much more than the photo shows. The room is beautiful fresh and clean with a bathroom and outside entrance with quail families that visit in the morning. Lovely new fresh coverlets towels, new little fridge. But most outstanding is the setting in the native bush with a walkway down to a beautiful stream. I took a dip on arrival. Also great tips on a hike that I took in a Kauri forest. Birdsong and nice people - graham likes fiddle music so that is good in my books.

  • All very nice

  • I found everything very clean, neat, well organised and thoughtful. A flowing stream and nature, that I could hear in my room, added a beautiful calming sound to the visit. The hosts had provided all I needed and Graeme's breakfasts of scrabbled eggs one morning and poached the next were delicious.

  • Loved staying with Heather and Graeme.

  • Would thoroughly recommend this accommodation. Heather gave us a great welcome and looked after us, as well as tipping us off about a local walk which would not be obvious to passers by.

  • We spent 2 nights at this quiet 2 bedroom cottage. The hosts were very welcoming with quick responses to my enquiries. With separate bedrooms and living area the place is very spacious. We were able to cook in the kitchen and do our holiday washing and dry it on the line outside. Great space.

  • We only stayed for one night at Lynnette's place, but it seemed to have everything we needed and was well suited our family of 4. We would definitely come again and explore the local area a bit more.
