Food Scene

Specialising in fish, the village pub is the only place in West Cumbria to make it in to the national food guides like Hardens. The menu is short, but always good, with meat and veggie options if you prefer. But this is definitely a pub, not a restaurant. There are always 3 or 4 well-kept ales, and a small, good value wine list. If you stand in the bar room, you will inevitably end up chatting to everyone else in there. Or sit outside in the summer for seaside ambience and the sound of clinking masts.

Drinks & Nightlife

Classic station pub with friendly staff and normally plenty of chatter. The food is standard fare with big portions and (usually) fast service.

Arts & Culture

The grand old castle is an unmissable day out. The gardens are huge and beautiful with unbelievable displays of bluebells and rhododendrons in spring. The castle is great to visit, with an octagonal library and stocks -- it is the home of the International Jesters' Tournament in May every year. But best of all are the twice-daily bird of prey displays, where you get up close with owls, hawks and eagles in the most beautiful settings.

Sightseeing

One of the largest Roman ruins let in the north, this tumble-down looks old, but you'd never guess it was built in 130AD! Find it on a lovely walk through the woods on tracks that take you either round the coast, or up to Muncaster Castle.
