Long standing favourite- cosy Italian restaurant upstairs with great food and wine list. Downstairs the Osteria offers more casual open seating. Good coffee!

Set right on the river Arun, this place is lovely in summer. Sit out and watch the boats/canoes/swans go by! At night the fire pits will keep you warm. Good pub food. Lovely walk to the Black Rabbit from the town centre (along the river bank on the castle side of the river).

Sightseeing

Amazing historical gem that is absolutely worth a visit. I particularly recommend the Collectors Earls' gardens (stunning), the armoury is a favourite for most kids and in the warmer months, the jousting/historical events are a definite hit. Outdoor theatre/music events in the castle grounds during August are wonderful- its traditional to take a picnic (and an umbrella)!

You need a car to visit this but it is absolutely worth the trip for history geeks. World class mosaics left in situ in this Roman villa set amongst the south downs. Kids (or enthusiastic adults) can play dress up and with few hands on games.

Golden sands that you don't often see in the UK. With a cafe and a big car park, expect it to be busy but its worth the trip! Book your parking in advance here: http://westwitteringestate.co.uk.

Not the golden sands of West Witterings but a lovely place for a paddle, walk or a sand castle. Good for crabbing too if you have some bacon, string and a bucket! Cafes and good parking.
