Good beach for a day out. Water sports, cafe, 2 good places to eat. You can get the train to Par, walk over the cliffs on the coast path and then swim and spend the day relaxing. It can get very busy in the summer as the pub terrace is a great end of the day sun trap. You can also walk from here to Menabilly.

North coast beach where the famous surfing competitions happen. Gets very busy in summer. Bars, music and places to eat. Feels a bit like a sand based ski resort. If you want to learn to surf then a day out in Newquay or on many of the north coast beaches is where to head.

Shopping

Holiday purchases and great local produce
The brewery tour is interesting and if you like beer, the tasting part of the tour is great. Also a lovely bar and great lunchtime venue, but does not open in the evenings. Underneath the bar is a shop where they sell most of their range of beers and ales to take away, as well as a wide selection of Cornish wines, gin, other spirits and the famous Camel Valley champagne which is highly recommended if you are celebrating.

Neighbourhood

A general guide to St Austell and the surrounding area
St Austell is a friendly and safe place to visit. You can buy most essentials and souvenirs in St Austell. There’s a small town centre and cinema. There are a number of supermarkets, pasty shops (the best ones are from our local butchers shop), nearby Tesco express, and places to eat in or takeaway. St Austell has loads of beaches nearby. Cherry tree cabin is well located for exploring all of the south coast and it’s a drive of only around 30 minutes to reach the north coast of Cornwall, including Newquay with its famous surfing beaches and various surf competitions throughout the year to watch. Cornwall has 300 miles of varied coastline. There are beaches for swimming and watersports around St Austell, a few listed here require a walk from car park to beach which often means they’re less busy, even in the height of summer. You can walk along the South West Coast path. It takes 30 minutes to join the path from the Cabin (5 min drive). You can hire bikes to use on the Pentewan cycle track, nearby Camel trail or the Clay Trails. You can join these a ten minute walk from Cherry Tree cabin. These cross -country routes link some of the sights through China clay mining country including the Eden Project and the Wheal Martyn Clay Works museum. There’s an interesting aqueduct and woodland walk in Luxulyan, quite nice to do on a less sunny day. The brewery is worth a visit (2 mins walk from the cabin). We’re roughly in between the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project. Charlestown is very interesting and has the Shipwreck Centre. For a typical Cornish fishing village, visit Mevagissey with its narrow streets and working harbour. For a boating town which is a bit more up market visit Fowey. The train from St Austell is just one stop to Cornwall’s only city, Truro.
