Your guide to Ingleton
All About Ingleton
With its historic railway viaduct set against the backdrop of Ingleborough peak, the North Yorkshire village of Ingleton sits amid magnificent hills, impressive limestone cave systems, and roaring waterfalls that draw walkers, cyclists, and sightseers. People have been flocking to the village’s many attractions since Victorian times, and it’s no wonder one of the world’s most celebrated fiction writers found inspiration for his famous detective stories in this dramatic environment.
Ingleton rests at the base of Ingleborough, one of the three peaks in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park. The village has a long and rich history of textile work and coal mining, and a community spirit that shines through in its local businesses, including the oldest pottery in the Yorkshire Dales and its unique antiques centre. While you’re in town, you may want to stop for a classic English pub lunch or a slice of Yorkshire parkin — ginger cake, a local favourite.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Ingleton
Ingleton attracts hikers, cyclists, and holidaymakers from April through October, with the warmest summer months being the busiest. Hikers tackle the Yorkshire Three Peaks route when the days are longest; renting holiday cottages in Ingleton in July is popular for the Ingleton Gala, when stalls, rubber duck races, food, and a fancy-dress parade take over the town. The heated outdoor swimming pool is open from the beginning of June through to early September. Winter is quiet and chilly, and you may even see snow. Rainy days can come at any time of year, but when the weather is inclement, there are plenty of local craft studios to visit, plus plenty of cosy cafes and pubs.
Top things to do in Ingleton
The Ingleborough and White Scar show caves
Embark on an underground adventure through Ingleton’s famous caves and learn about the impact water and time have on the landscape. The Ingleborough Cave and nature trail is Yorkshire’s premier show cave and has been mesmerising visitors since 1837 with its cathedral-like limestone formations. The White Scar Cave is the longest show cave in the UK. If you take a guided visit — hard hat required — you’ll travel through the access tunnel to see the awe-inspiring limestone stalactites, waterfalls, and underground pools.
The Ingleton Waterfalls Trail
This circular walk from the village of Ingleton takes you to its five stunning waterfalls. Follow the banks of the Doe and Twiss rivers and the spray will graze your cheeks as you get up close to the plunging torrents surrounded by lush greenery. The trail takes around 2.5 hours, and although the path is formed well, you should still wear sturdy shoes or boots.
The Ribblehead Viaduct
Ingleton has thrived for centuries because of its location on transport routes. A spectacular example of this is the Ribblehead Viaduct, just 15 minutes from Ingleton village. The 32-metre-high viaduct is a masterpiece of 19th-century engineering, with its 24 arches spanning 400 metres across a beautiful valley. The visitor centre at the railway station provides information on its construction; you can also walk through the ruined camp settlements of the workers who built it.
