All about Lindos

Standing midway down the east coast of the Greek island of Rhodes, the ancient town of Lindos is a scenic beachside community steeped in history. The backdrop to the town is the mighty Acropolis, perched high above the winding streets on an imposing rocky headland. The descent into the old town is through a maze of narrow cobbled alleyways, passing by whitewashed homes, small characterful shops, and captains’ houses dating back to the 16th century. Many entrances feature decorative black and white pebble mosaics in zigzag patterns.

The coastline splits into several individual coves, including Pallas Beach, St. Paul’s Bay, and Lindos Beach, each with a stretch of golden sand giving way to the shimmering waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Water sports are popular here, from sedate pedalo rides to paddleboarding. When the sun drops below the horizon, it’s a time to savour fresh, local grouper and tuna in the open air on the flat roof of one of the traditional local restaurants, with the illuminated Acropolis always in view.

What are the top things to do in Lindos?

Lindos Acropolis

The Acropolis towers above Lindos at 116 metres high, offering unbeatable views across the town. A place of archaeological and historical importance, the site includes ruins from the Temple of Athena Lindia from around 300 B.C., surrounded by magnificent walls built in the 14th century. Watch as the sun glints off the ocean below, but be careful of the steep drop.

St. Paul’s Bay

Viewed from the Acropolis, St. Paul’s Bay appears as a heart-shaped lagoon surrounded by rocks. As well as its golden sandy beach and shallow waters, it is shrouded in history and legend. This picturesque setting is further enhanced by a Greek Orthodox chapel at the end of the bay, where weddings often take place.

Church of the Panagia

With a rich history dating back to the 14th century, the Church of Panagia is at the heart of the town of Lindos. Its whitewashed exterior and octagonal roof disguise an interior that is a real feast for the eyes, with exquisite pebble mosaics on the floor and a dizzying array of colourful frescoes covering almost every inch.
