The space
Lagoons lead into the forest and a path leads to the beach at this coastal-chic home on Hilton Head Island. It’s newly built, but evokes centuries of Carolina style with wood floors and coffered ceilings. Part of the Palmetto Dunes Resort, it’s tucked into a quiet, leafy neighborhood less than 1 mile from a sandy Atlantic beach, where you can chase thrills on a surfboard or collect shells.

Start the morning with coffee on a bench overlooking the glassy waters of the lagoon, then shift to a lounger by the swimming pool and hot tub. There’s a covered alfresco dining area with a built-in barbecue and wet bar just off the pool terrace, and a shaded outdoor sitting area on the porch just off the main living area.

Dormer windows and double doors make for a formal entrance to this villa, but just inside, its bright, spacious great room is immediately welcoming. There’s room for the whole family in the sitting area or around the dining table, and even those who don’t cook can take a seat at the stone breakfast bar in the fully equipped kitchen.

It’s less than 1 mile from the house to the beach, a wide stretch with waves you can surf or boogie board, and sand that’s ideal for strolling. Explore the neighborhood on the 4 provided beach-cruiser bicycles or call the Palmetto Dunes community’s Dunes Buggy shuttle for a ride to other beaches, golf courses, and shopping and dining at Shelter Cove.
