Character cottage in the heart of Bowness. Walking distance from all amenities , yet set back in a private location behind trees. With parking and lovely garden this is the perfect place to explore the beautiful surroundings.
FOXGLOVE COTTAGE IN WINDERMERE LAKE DISTRICT Foxglove Cottage lies in Bowness, one of the Lake Districts most popular villages, with its many shops, inns, cafes and restaurants leading down to the beautiful lake Windermere. Foxglove cottage is the perfect place to enjoy the outstanding natural beauty and to walk to local restaurants for a spot of dinner and maybe glass of wine or two. The end property of three traditional lakeland cottages, Foxglove Cottage is a short walk from Bowness village and bay and yet remains private, hidden behind trees and shrubs. A shared drive leads up to the cottages and Foxglove is on the far end with lovely private garden to the rear. The side entrance leads into the well equipped kitchen/dining room. A single step leads up to the oak beamed sitting room. The room has comfy sofa and arm chairs, and , of course , the obligatory log burning stove. A most comfortable and cosy place to relax after a long walk in the beautiful surrounding area. A narrow staircase leads to the upstairs floor, on the landing is the first bathroom with bath and overhead shower. A few more steps lead onto the main landing off which there are two bedrooms, one the master double, with en-suite whirlpool bath and overhead shower, the second a pretty twin bedroom. At the rear of the cottage there is a lovely private garden, surrounded by shrubs and trees. there is a dining area where you can perhaps have a barbecue and enjoy a glass of rose in the spring/summer. This is a perfect place to stay for either couples or a small family, where the amazing area of the Lake district can be easily explored and just a short walking distance you can pop out to wine and dine in the evening before returning to a cosy relaxing cottage. The Location The linked towns of Bowness and Windermere lie east of Lake Windermere, where Bowness is at the waters edge, with the town of Windermere set about a half mile away above the lake. Each is a busy community of shops, cafes, restaurants and attractions, serving both the local community and our visitors to the Lake District. Perhaps the biggest attraction is the bay at Bowness, a sweeping crescent of waterfront and adjoining parkland, where you can enjoy a walk by the shore or find a quite place to picnic. At the bay you will find the piers and the famous Windermere steamers, which offer boat trips up and down the ten - mile reach of the lake. Here you can also hire rowing boats and motor powered boats, which can be taken by the hour to explore the lake and it islands for yourself. Other popular attractions are the World of Beatrix Potter, the Windermere Steam Boat Museum and a little south of Bowness the Blackwell Arts and Crafts house, one of the most important surviving houses from the turn of the 20th century. The house is a superb example of the Arts and Crafts movement architecture, where it occupies a stunning position overlooking Windermere and is open to the public as a gallery for craft and applied arts. North of Windermere is Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Center. Set on the lakeshores the main house is surrounded by beautiful gardens where you will find a huge adventure playground, café, shop and exhibitions along with a host of information about the National Park. For visual entertainment you have the Royalty Cinema in Windermere, and the Old Laundry Theatre in Bowness, staging a lively annual season of music, theatre, comedy and film. There are plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants, where for me the best is by far Jericho’s in Windermere. Owned and run by Jo and Chris Blaydes, the welcome is always warm, the setting perfect and the cuisine delicious. For a good country pub atmosphere there is the Queens Head at Troutbeck, about 2 miles from the main village the inn offers fine beers, good food and roaring fires in winter months. For the big walks and big landscapes you will have to travel a bit further into the park, however there is a good local walk up onto Orrest Head, which begins from Windermere, just opposite the railway station. Anecdotally it was the first ever walk for Alfred Wainwright where the view from the summit was said to have changed his life and set him on a lifetime of fell walking and the production of those much loved walking guides. Also quite local are the fells to the south of Bowness. Although not mountain high, they offer a magical rolling countryside rising above the lake with magnificent views. Travel a little further afield and you much to explore. South of the villages, at the foot of Windermere, is Newby Bridge and Lakeside where the steamers terminate. Here you will also find Fell Foot Park for boat hire, fishing and the National Trust Gardens. East lies kendal, the capital Town of South Lakeland. A host of good shopping, restaurants and a busy cultrural scene with the likes of the Abbot Hall Art Gallery and The Brewery Arts Center. At the northern head of the lake lies Ambleside, a popular town with cinema, pubs, restaurants and huge selection of outdoor and climbing gear shops. Once you past the head of the lake you are within easy rach of the big fells such as the Langdales, the forest of Grizedale and the other great lake in the south, Coniston Water.
The outstanding natural beauty, beyond compare! Convenience of local village with it's selection of restaurants and shops.
  • Lovely traditional Lakeland cottage, super cute and brilliant location. Stayed here Friday to Sunday for my partners birthday weekend away. The cottage is very cute and cosy with lovey wooden beams and traditional decor. Kitchen has excellent amenities and the place is lovely and clean. The location is just perfect, tucked away behind trees yet a minute walk from the centre on Bowness. Would definitely recommend and would stay here again.

Bowness on Windermere , Cumbria, United Kingdom

Fermain Cottage is a charming lakeland home that has been lovingly renovated over the years to a high standard. It is a three storey property on a peaceful road, just a very short walk from Ambleside town centre. With ample parking for two vehicles, it is a perfect base from which to explore everything the Lake District has to offer. A tranquil, cosy and memorable place to stay, for up to five people. We are a strictly dog-free cottage.
The front door opens straight into a newly renovated and well equipped kitchen area. The oven, gas hob and microwave gives you plenty of cooking options. There is a fridge / freezer, kettle, Nespresso Coffee Machine and dishwasher. There are plenty of pots, pans, crockery, glassware and cooking utensils - everything you need for a self-catered holiday. Stone floors lead through to the living room where there is a dining table / chairs and two sofas. There is a wall mounted television and a wood burning stove which is lovely to sit by in the evenings (please bring your own logs). There are some books and games kept in the living room which you are welcome to use. The house is fully centrally heated throughout and the controls are on the first floor landing. The bathroom is a stunning focal point of the home. After a long walk in the hills you can take a soak in the claw-foot tub, or have an invigorating shower with our complimentary toiletries. There is also a double bedroom on the first floor and laundry facilities. The top floor houses a large second double bedroom and a smaller single bedroom. There are excellent views of the surrounding fells from the top floor. On prior request we can accommodate a sixth person on a pull-out bed in the single bedroom. It is a full size single mattress bed (see photos) and would probably be best suited for children. There is an additional charge of twenty pounds if you would like the sixth bed to be made up. Stair-gates and a travel cot can be assembled prior to your arrival, upon request. Being a traditional lakeland cottage, the staircases are quite narrow and steep, which may present a challenge to the elderly or those with mobility problems. Outside: The back door leads out from the living room to a small, peaceful garden with an area of grass and benches. There is a gravel driveway large enough for two cars. There is a large lockable shed in the garden. If you want to store bikes etc in there, I am happy to arrange for the key to be left for you. We are a strictly dog-free cottage.
Ambleside is a bustling and lively village where you will find plenty of things to do. Many happy hours can be spent wandering around the town and its interesting shops (with plenty of stops for coffees and cakes!). Ambleside is one of the best places to shop for outdoor gear if you are into fell walking / outdoor activities. In the evenings there are a number of restaurants within walking distance from the cottage if you don't feel like cooking. Pop into one of the many cosy pubs for a drink. The Lake District is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK - there is so much to explore! Turn right out of the cottage door on foot and there are a number of beautiful walks up the hill and onto the local fells, which are suitable for most people and children. Or take a short drive for some more challenging walks in the area - Helvellyn on a clear day offers unparalleled beauty from the top.
  • Fantastic location and a warm, welcoming cottage with everything you need.

    Chris2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • We’ve just got back from a stay with two toddlers and a baby and the cottage was perfect! The cottage had a baby gate, high chair and travel cot all ready and waiting for us. It’s in a great location so close to walk into Ambleside centre and some fantastic views from the bedrooms on the top floor. Gareth was really responsive to my messages, and check in/out was so simple. The cottage was spotlessly clean and felt so homely and cosy, we’ll definitely be returning here for more Lake District adventures!

    Sophia2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • A fabulous cosy home in the centre of Ambleside. We will definitely be back x

    Michele2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent accomodation, close to Ambleside centre (the hill to the cottage isn't as big as it looks on Google maps). It had everything we needed despite spending most of our time out walking or hiding in the local pubs from the weather! All in all, would highly recommend if visiting Ambleside or the Lake District in general!

  • The apartment is beautiful throughout. The location is very central so easy to find restaurants and shops. Communication between the hosts and myself was very quick and they made sure to cover all areas and was always there to help if needed. The little touches they added just made the stay extra special, they had a sweet box for us and my dog even had his own treats. I will be booking with them again when I go back to Windermere.

A charming apartment in a traditional Lakeland house. Ideal for walking, cycling, climbing, rowing, sailing and kayaking. Wide choice of shops, cafes, pubs & restaurants in nearby Windermere & Bowness. Main tourist attractions within easy reach.
Willow is a located in tranquil woodland with views towards the mountains and fells. The apartment is part of an extension to Pinethwaite Lodge. The original part of Pinethwaite Lodge dates from the late 19th Century. Willow has a bedroom with double bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers. The kitchen, dining and living area are all in one room with sink, electric oven, hob, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster, dining table and chairs, settee and TV. The bathroom has underfloor electric heating, a shower, toilet and wash hand basin. A cot for a baby can be provided on request but please bring bedding for the cot (my children are in their mid 20s now!) Willow and our grounds are not 'child friendly', however. I do not provide child proof plug socket covers or cupboard locks. In addition there are a number of external hazards including a pond, stream and stone steps close to the apartment. Your child/children will need to be supervised at all times. I charge a one off payment of £5.00 for the use of the cot. I can provide a camp bed which fits in the kitchen/dining/living room area if the sofa is moved! It is a bit of a squeeze! If you wish to use the camp bed as well please bring a sleeping bag. I charge a one off hire fee of £5.00 for the use of the camp bed. There is a small courtyard by the entrance with table and chairs. Bicycles can be stored in an undercover storage area next to Willow in our shed.
The Lake District is a year round destination and Pinethwaite Lodge is located near Windermere in the heart of the National Park. Outdoor opportunities are endless: walking, cycling climbing, rowing, sailing and kayaking - all within easy reach and Windermere Golf Club is just up the lane. The main tourist attractions of the southern Lake District are all on the doorstep – Windermere with cruise boats, Beatrix Potter attractions, a cinema in Bowness – and a little further away are the Aquarium of the Lakes, Car Museum, Sizergh Castle and Brockhole Visitor Centre. Bowness and Windermere are within a couple of miles, with a wide choice of shops, tea rooms, cafes and restaurants and modern and traditional pubs. The popular centre of Windermere is surrounded by very accessible vantage points that give glorious views of the surrounding area and lake. Orrest Head, a 784’ hill north of the town, provides one of the finest panoramas – as does School Knott – immediately behind Pinethwaite. Another easy climb is Biskey Howe, a 300’ hill east of Bowness, which has quaint narrow streets and a 15th century church. Windermere, the lake, has fourteen islands, including privately owned Belle Isle with its 18th century round house. Further afield, the list of stately homes, steam railways, lakes and tarns, homes of authors and poets, and fine eating places, is almost endless, all set in the deep valleys and foothills of the Lakeland fells, where some of Britain’s best scrambling and mountain walking may be found. Even in today’s busy world, it is possible still to leave cars and people behind and find solitude in many parts of the Lake District. In addition, Pinethwaite is a haven for wildlife: foxes, badgers, roe deer, and a wide range of birds, from buzzards, to long-tailed tits, warblers, fly catchers, heron, tawny owls and many more.

The Windermere area You'll discover fine varied walking country around Lake Windermere, at the heart of the Lake District. Hire a boat and take to the lake itself, or use the network of footpaths to reach the best high-level views. There are lots of options for places to visit, including Ambleside Roman Fort and Troutbeck Park, which was once owned by Beatrix Potter. Enjoy this beautiful region and unwind amidst breathtaking scenery at any time of the year. Ramble through some of the best walking country in Britain; get out your mountain bike and go off road or simply enjoy the pleasures of the delightful towns and villages dotted throughout the lakes and Cumbria. The railway arrived in 1857, making the area much more accessible to visitors and with this demand grew a wealth of Lake District Hotels and a multitude of natural and 'built' attractions. The railway still exists today and brings people from all over the world to this special area of the Lake District National Park. As well as being a sustainable way to travel, most of the Windermere hotels are only a short walk from the station, or at worst a five minute taxi ride. In terms of attractions, Lake Windermere is well known as England's largest Lake at over 10 miles long and is also the deepest at 65 metres. There are numerous outstanding viewing points within easy reach either by car, or by short walk. Gummer's Howe is probably the most famous being situated at the south end of Lake Windermere. You can drive most of the way, leaving only a 30 minute walk to marvel at the panoramic views over Lake Windermere and across to Morecambe Bay. To see the Lakes from a different perspective, Arnside Knott rewards those who take this gentle climb with stunning views of the Kent Estuary and Morecambe Bay; simply head for the viewpoint. For a more challenging, but still enjoyable walk for most, take the 2 hour round trip to Brantfell and Post Knott. Take the camera, as there are wonderful views of Windermere, the stunning Langdales and maybe even the Lake District Hotel you've chosen. Hope for a clear day and always check the weather forecasts before heading out. Suitable footwear is always important, even on these more leisurely walks. Around Lake Windermere you'll find an array of villages and hamlets to enjoy. While the drive will be slow around the twisting back roads, you'll discover: + Fell Foot Park [National Trust] where you can enjoy an ice cream and hire a boat; + Aquarium of the Lakes and the Lakeside and Haverthwaite railway at Lakeside, both being attractions you can enjoy on a sunny or rainy day; + At Graythwaite you can enjoy Graythwaite Hall Gardens, which are particularly impressive in the Spring; + Head up towards Sawrey and visit ‘Hill Top', a 17th century farmhouse where Beatrix Potter weaved her lyrical magic. + At the north end of Lake Windermere, Ambleside is a Mecca for walking enthusiasts and you can take a lake cruise back to your hotel in Bowness-on-Windermere; + Visit the Beatrix Potter Attraction in Bowness-on-Windermere £250–£350/ week 2 nights minimum stay Nearest Travel Links Airport: Manchester Railway & Bus: Windermere 1/4 mile from accommodation Ferry: Birkenhead Activities near Windermere Sports: Tennis Watersports Horse Riding Golf within 30 mins drive Fishing Walking holidays Rural / countryside retreats Beach or lakeside relaxation Cycling holidays Motorcycling holidays Romantic break
A Victorian town almost as it was when first developed. Beautiful buildings and dedicated to the tourist industry. Fantastic breathtaking scenery. A busy place even in the heart of winter. Probably my favourite time of the year with its fresh crisp air. Autumnal colours are a sight to behold. Spring with its rebirth reminds me if the warmer days ahead where as a child I came on holidays to spend hours dipping my feet in streams and lakes. A place you will want to return to for sure.

The location is absolutely perfect, crawling distance from the Crafty Baa and a great base for adventures. Sharon was super quick to respond to my messages as well. Thanks so much Sharon we had a great few days in The Lakes!

  • Great location for buses, train, supermarkets, restaurants and bars in central Windermere, with very clear directions and easy self check in. Cute and cosy and everything to hand that you need for your stay. Very clean and comfortable. Will be returning for sure!

  • At first, I felt that the space was small, but the landlord Sharon's ingenuity made the house use more than expected. Be careful not to be hit by the bed frame and it will be fine.

  • What a wonderful find. The perfect location, pretty much opposite Brockhole and just 10 mins from either Windermere or Ambleside. The house is incredible - the views, the space for children to play and the addition of books and toys. We had excellent communication from start to finish, a lovely welcome pack of wine, fruit baskets and biscuits. And as it was Halloween, Margaret went to the trouble of decorating the girls room with balloons, themed cushions, and trick or treat bags full of goodies. In addition to the pumpkins outside, it was a dream for them. Fully stocked kitchen, plenty of DVDs and we felt truly relaxed all week. We will be back!

    Liz2019-11-02T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret’s cottage is a quiet, clean, spacious and calming place. It is very near to the major attractions such as Brockhole on Windermere and Beatrix Potter museum and close to a lot of lovely restaurants and bars of the area. One can’t hear any noise of the streets as the cottage is situated in the middle of a nature retreat. The whole place made us feel at ease as it was super spacious and sparking clean. Kitchen is a dream to cook in with all modern amenities and appliances. Plenty of toys, movies, books and board games to keep the kids engaged. Large grounds in front of house for kids to run and play. Margaret was very nice, easy to talk to and very friendly. She welcomed us with lots of warmth and was genuinely interested in making sure we have a great holiday. I would definitely come again!

    Ajay2019-10-25T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret is a fantastic host with accommodation in a fantastic location and with great facilities. We had our one year old daughter with us and she flourished in that spacious living space. Thanks again and we will be back.

    Mark2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect place for families! 6 of us stayed with three generations among us. Our little one, who was almost two, was very happy with the available toys and the upstairs open space to run around in. Adults enjoyed comfortably lounging around and nearby walks and attractions. There was something for everyone! The cottage is clean, well furnished, with a carefully thought-out layout and a convenient location just outside Windermere. Best of all, it offered privacy and comfort like being in our own home. The kitchen was a delight to cook in! We saw deer and sheep graze from our windows. We slept deeply each night. Our host Margaret was attentive, always quick to answer questions, and gave clear directions to reach the property and surrounding attractions. She even prepared a welcome basket of fruits, wines and shortbread. It was a delight to chat with her and she was very open, kind and caring. I cannot praise this place enough, it's one of the best stays we've had ever!

    Katherine2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • You will struggle to find a friendlier, more accommodating host than Margaret. Her lodge is amazing, with great views on all sides. The privacy is unlike anything you could get from a holiday park or the majority of Airbnb places we have stayed in. Immaculately clean and very homely, it really is a wonderful place to stay for anyone looking for a home base whilst exploring the Lakes.

    Peter2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • This house is beautiful. Perfectly close to Ambleside and Windermere combined, it’s private grounds are huge and you feel in the middle of nowhere.

    Alexander2019-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely place in an amazing location!! A perfect peaceful trip.

    Thea2019-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • This is an excellent house, but shhh don't tell anybody or they'll all want to stay here! Really comfortable with excellent quality fittings and a real attention to detail. Margret clearly takes pride in this house. The house is modern and spacious even with 5 guests. We almost never stay in the same house two years running, but this house has broken that rule as we've already booked for next year! Thanks Margret!

The Conga is a cosy, quirky cottage, part of a small row of houses built in the 1840s. It has a south facing aspect and lovely views. Situated in a very quiet part of Ambleside, it is only a short 10 minute walk down in to the village and there are many scenic walks right from the door. Parking available.
  • This is a brilliant place (the pictures are very accurate) in a truly beautiful location. The views are wonderful (including tons of birds!) especially from the comfy bed, which is deceptively large too. We cooked very easily in the kitchen with all crockery/utensils provided, and Jem had left us some coffee/sugar/oil. There are loads of local maps and leaflets too which were great. Cannot recommend this enough, it is a really cute place in a beautiful setting.

  • A very charming place to stay in a great location. Well placed for a lovely walk to the high Sweden bridge and a short, though steep (if needed to be considered), walk into town. The bed is so comfy and overlooks a great view.

  • Lovely little place, very cosy and felt really tranquil. All of the walks we did were a walk away from the house, it was nice to leave the car at the AirBnB! We will definitely be returning if and when we come back to the Lake District again. Thanks Jem!

The Lake District, also known as the Lakes or Lakeland, is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes, forests and mountains (or fells), and its associations with William Wordsworth and the other Lake Poets and with Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin. A National Park established in 1951 covers an area of 2,362 square kilometres. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. The Lake District is located entirely within the county of Cumbria. All the land in England higher than 3,000 feet (914 m) above sea level lies within the National Park, including Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. It also contains the deepest and longest bodies of water in England, Wast Water and Windermere.
  • Great location and great host. Everything we needed for a stay in the Lake District - thank you

    Trelawney2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • You must stop here, everything about the place is perfect. There are so many thoughtful little touches that elevate staying here above other places, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. The advice I would give to anybody staying here is to take a walk down the road you drive up to arrive, then hang a left at the end up a public footpath and climb directly up the peak in front of you, the views on the way up and indeed at the top are some of the best in the country.

    Christian2020-02-14T00:00:00Z

  • We stayed at Little Grove for 4 days and it was a lovely experience. It's a cosy space that has everything you would need. The views are stunning and the sheep and chickens out the back were very friendly! Lovely little touches made the stay even nicer, fresh cake and eggs from the farm were delicious. Close enough to Ambleside to feel part of the town but still feels like you are out in the fells. We hope to be back again! Thanks Sarah

Very quiet and private location but only 10 mins walk into Windermere town centre or down to the lake.
  • A lovely Airbnb in perhaps the best possible Windermere location. Less than a five minute walk to both lake and town. Also a wonderful base from which to explore the rest of the lakes. :)

  • The secret nook is stylish and has a warm touch of home, plus a little more extra special pretty touches. I have enjoyed my stay there and should I come back to England and the area would definitely want to stay at the secret nook again.

Small but perfectly formed en suite double room in a Lakeland Victorian townhouse. The house is on a quiet street in the heart of Windermere, just 2 minutes walk from the many bars, cafés, restaurants and shops, and just 15 minutes walk from the shores of lake Windermere. The train station is a 10 minute walk away.
A light, sunny room (when the sun is shining :)) at the back of the house with views of the Lake District mountain tops. The space is small but not pokey. It's been beautifully renovated with a brand new en-suite bathroom, a very comfortable bed and a selection of fair-trade teas and fresh coffee for you in the room.
  • A really lovely place to stay in the Lake District. Perfect location in Windermere. The room is perfect, really liked the little tea and coffee station in the room and John made us an excellent breakfast both days. Would absolutely recommend this accommodation.

    Stephanie2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Couldn’t ask for a better place to stay. Lovely room, thoughtful & caring host. Location is ideal. John went out his way to make us Vegan brownies on leaving. Wonderful touch to a wonderful host. Thank you

    Kyle2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • John is one of the nicest people I have met. He treated me like a personal guest in his own home. The room is sparkling clean and the amenities are great. John rustled up a hearty breakfast and had excellent advice about local trips. Highly recommend. I would give it 10 stars if I could.

  • John is a really friendly and helpful host with a beautiful home. We had a great time staying here, and would definitely come again.

  • We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone! Lovely host, beautiful room, perfect location and tasty breakfast! Thanks John! Hope to go back soon.

  • John was amazing! A lovely host, very good tips for the area and made us feel most welcome. The room was great as well. Very clean and a super comfortable mattress. We were sad to leave after just one night and will be back when we’re in the area again. You’re missing out if you don’t stay here!

  • Me and my husband can highly recommend John's place. John is an exceptional host. The communication was super. He was very quick to respond with any questions. He is easy to talk to, friendly and accomodating. John let us drop bags off early and park car. He offered us a guest pass for the car and we were able to park right outside the house. It's location could not be better to explore Windermere with its beautiful shops, cafe bars, restaurants and so much more. It is in a very peaceful and quiet area of Windermere. A 5 minute stroll into the heart of the town and 20 minutes to Bowness. It really is such a magical area and John's place is perfect to use as a base to explore. The photo doesn't do this place justice. It's a beautiful Victorian house. Full of charm. Its absolutely spotless. Immaculate. The bed was super comfortable and the bedding luxurious. A nice hospitality tray. Stylish en suite bathroom with a great power shower. Breakfast was offered. We love omelettes and this was not a problem. Served downstairs in the bright and airy basement in a beautiful kitchen with lovely coffee. A great start to the day. Our stay could not have been any better. We would highly recommend this wonderful Airbnb. It's a very good price too. Always a bonus.

    Debra2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • This is a very good place and John is a nice host. John is very kind and skilled in art and music. He was very kind, listening patiently to my fluent English and paraphrasing words I didn't understand. My time talking with John is still an important memory for me! Surrounded by John's house and the nature of windermere, we had a very nice time! The room was very cute and renovated by hand and looked like a hotel. There is also a brand new private bathroom with a nice British antique handle. The bed is large enough to sleep with two people. In the evening, I cooked freely in the kitchen with open kitchen. Because John cooks everyday, he has a lot of spices and Japanese knives. I was able to relax and relax as if I were living abroad. The house is a quiet place because it is just one from the main street. Supermarkets and main streets are just around the corner, and within 5-10 minutes walk from windermere station. I want to go to England again to stay here! Thanks for John's hospitality!

In light of the Coronavirus, we wanted to reassure our guests that our beautiful country hut is like home from home. It is isolated from anyone else or any other properties, with its own private outdoor space. Your nearest guests are the sheep in the field next door! With 5* reviews, hygiene has always been paramount and we personally clean our hut to the highest standard. We provide hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial wipes and all linen is professional cleaned. With best wishes, Jo and Darren
Set on a private road, away from the noise, and yet both Windermere and Bowness are only a short 10 minutes walk away. There is a private parking area with plenty of space that is shared with the main house, connected to a small path leading you to the hut. Mountain bikers are welcome to bring and leave bikes in our secure garage.
The hut is based on a quiet, hidden road, in walking distance to the vibrant Windermere town where there is plenty of places to eat out from Italian cuisine to Thai. One of our favourite places to eat is The Smith a small family run pizza restaurant with a log fire and twinkly fairy lights. If you like your beer and ales the crafty Ba is a friendly place with homely decor and a great ambience, not to mention the most extensive selection of drinks available. We've had many a cheeseboard here! For amazing brunch and breakfast it's a must to visit Homeground coffee and kitchen! And for sunny days I recommend Cafe Italia across the road with outside seating where you can drink cappuccinos and watch the people go by.
  • Wonderful place to stay that we cant recommend enough. Perfectly situated from both Windermere and Bowness by foot (or by other means) if you want somewhere close to the towns yet away from the noise. Stunning views from the hut over rolling hills and off in to the distance which come at great value for money in a very pricey area. Super clean, and really well fitted out the hut was ideal for our needs. Jo was a great host who went to every measure and beyond to make us feel comfortble. Would happily stay again in the future - thanks for having us.

    Oliver2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • The five stars option isn’t enough! We have travelled to Windermere/Bowness-on-Windermere many times over the past 13 years, but this stay has absolutely been the most special and memorable stay. Jo and Darren kindly left a lovely bottle of bubbly for our Anniversary 💕. The Hut is just perfect, so beautifully decorated and so cleverly designed. We loved the Stag and Heart details which are so pretty and stylish. The views are spectacular and how lovely to wake up to sheep just outside the window. We were sad to leave today, but we will book to return. Our best Anniversary ever, Suzanne and Paul

  • A gorgeous and cosy place to stay in the Lakes, only a short walk to Windermere town and Jo and Darren were super friendly and added lovely touches to make us feel welcome! A perfect home for a few days away!

  • Jo's place is amazing. Fantastic location with stunning views. Jo has made a small space into a haven with everything you could need and more for a break away.

    Vicki2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely few days staying in Jo's hut and exploring the Lake District. Although the weather was less than ideal, we still managed to enjoy our time away and we would definitely recommend staying at Oakland Hut due to the great location and brilliant facilities.

    Rebecca2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • We booked Jo's place as a birthday gift for my brother and sister in law. They had a lovely time, the hut is very cosy and welcoming and Jo added a very personal touch leaving a birthday cake and card which was much appreciated.

  • Just returned back from a short stay in Windermere. This hut is stunning with lovely, thoughtful touches. Although small, it provides a quiet get away from the hustle and bustle of busy life. Location wise it is perfect, you can be in the heart of Windermere within 10 minutes walk where you can find lots of nice cafes/bars/pubs and shops. The hut has everything you need, and I can imagine in summer the outside part of the property is beautiful with the scenery and BBQ! Jo and Darren were amazing from start to finish, communication was fast and check in/out was effortless. They were always on hand if we needed them. Despite the weather we still came away feeling happy, well rested and refreshed. I cannot fault this fab property, will definitely be booking again! Thank you Jo + Darren!

    Amy2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • A great two nights away in rainy February, the hut was everything we wanted and more! Very private and perfectly situated just a short walk into Windermere where you’ll find lots of great restaurants and bars. The hut was very cosy with underfloor heating, so perfect for a getaway no matter the weather. We’re already looking forward to getting another trip booked in for Summer so we can make use of the lovely outside area. Thank you very much Jo and Darren x

  • Bigger than we expected. Very little noise from the road outside. During the storms of Feb 2020 we were comfortably warm; there is a small fan heater which can be deployed until the convectors and/or log burner have heated up. Logs can be bought at a garage 5 mins walk away, if it is closed then the supermarket near the railway station has them and is open to until late. Parking wasn't a problem, we arrived at about 3pm and parked two minutes walk from the flat. Great value for our visit in February, we are thinking of going back next year.

  • A beautiful property set in a brilliant location to explore the Lakes. Spotlessly clean and the added extras (e.g. coffee, toiletries) made the property really inviting. We travelled with our 2 year old who loved the open plan kitchen and dining room. Gareth responded quickly & clearly takes pride in hosting guests. We are already looking to book again!

    Tracey2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Gareth truly has one of the most spectacular homes within the Lake District. The house has a beautiful finish to it, exceptionally clean and gorgeous views of Windermere. It has tremendously easy access and is easy to find as well. There is plenty to do in the local area. We walked and drove to Windermere and got to experience to the local area. We had been to Grasmere before and it's not too far a drive either. The warmth of the home truly made us feel home from home. We relaxed very easily in to a way of life at the house and allowed us to enjoy the trip even more. The house has everything you could possibly want in terms of amenities and again is very clean. It is spcaious and has a lovely entertaining area. The lounge looks over majestic views of Windermere. I highly recommend this property to anyone wanting to spend time in The Lakes. Suitable for couples and families. You will not be disappointed.

    Nick2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Gareth’s place was a dream to stay in, we were there for 2 nights. The area itself is in an ideal location looking over the lake which is about a 10 min walk to the ferry jetty. There are hotels in walking distance where you can eat and drink or there is a bus stop right at the bottom of the drive to the house which can take you one way to Windermere or the other to Ambleside or you can get a taxi. The taxi cost us £7 to get into Windermere and they run 24/7. Now to the house, the house was very clean, stylish, practical and comfortable. The Kitchen and living area were excellent with 4k smart TV and a large sofa in the living area and all what you need in a huge kitchen area + diner. We stayed in the large bedroom at the top of the house, the bed was huge and extremely comfortable, we both had amazing night’s sleep. We really cannot faulter this property in any way including Gareth himself who was very informative. We would strongly recommend this property for location, comfort and price.

  • This accommodation is excellent for anyone wanting a base somewhere near Windermere or Ambleside. The standard is excellent. No issues with the host, all communications were clear and informative. Literally 3 mins from the main Ambleside / Windermere main road and all we heard over night were the owls !! Bliss ... Will certainly use again.

  • Great location for a weekend break

  • The Lake View at Merewood Lodge offers fantastic accommodation that includes a modern interior with a traditional cottage style of the local area. The location of the cottage was ideal and offered an easy commute to many tourist attractions while being in a quiet area. The lake views from the cottage were fantastic and the cottage contained many amenities that were a great surprise. (4K TV, vast kitchen utensils/appliances.) Would highly recommend this Airbnb.

The 5 Herdwick Huts are set on their own exclusive site on the stunning grounds of Rydal Hall in the heart of the Lake District National Park. With the best mountain walks straight from your hut door and Rydal lake only a 5 min walk away, it really is hard to beat this location. Perfect for a truly romantic getaway any time of year. All bedding linen and kitchen utensils provided, (including tea towel, sponge and washing up liquid) plus wood and kindling to get you started for the wood burner.
Tea room, ornate gardens and state of the art toilet/shower block on site at Rydal Hall for guest use.
Lakes, mountains and the Badger Bar for great pub grub and an opportunity to see the badgers.
  • We loved our little hut, and it worked perfectly for a short Winter/Spring break (the log burner kept the place nice and toasty, and the tea-light lanterns are a lovely little touch). Would definitely recommend!

    Charlie2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fabulous time in Blea hut, the weather was a wet and snowy, but what do you expect in the Lakes in February. However the hut was lovely and warm with the log burner and had all the amenities for cooking etc. They’re in a fantastic location for walks... 4 mile to Grasmere, 1-1/2 to Ambleside, Rydal Cave over the road. There’s the Badger pub on the main road but we walked into Ambleside with head torches on an evening. Showers/toilets are a walk but that didn’t bother us at all. We will definitely be back in winter. Little gem !!

    Jane2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • So so simple. Great log burner and enough amenities to get you through the coldest nights. Close to some great walks. Shower facilities also only 150 meters. Very cute 👍

Stunning views of Lake Windermere Four poster bed. Whitecraggs is a truly magnificent setting amidst 3.5 acres of landscaped grounds designed by the famous Kew Plant Hunter, William Purdom, with mature specimens of rare trees and alpine plants, these three holiday apartments form part of Whitecraggs, a converted country house. On two levels, Black Combe Apartment (ref W41226) provides spacious accommodation with a romantic four poster bedroom. Skiddaw Apartment (ref W41227) provides cosy accommodation on the ground floor looking out over the gardens to Lake Windermere, whilst Scafell Apartment (ref W41228) is a delightful first floor apartment. Commissioned and built in 1904, Whitecraggs is a prime example of pre-World War I architecture. Designed by Dan Gibson, also known known for his design of five other prominent Lakeland properties, it was seen as architectural rebellion when compared to the historic style of the earlier Victorian era. Built in a traditional Lakeland style, influenced by the ‘Arts and Crafts’ movement, most of the original features and designs are still included today. Situated in the tranquil location of central Lakeland, the area has been described as ‘a place of natural beauty’ by its commissioner and surgeon, Charles Henry Hough. Perched on the northern tip of Lake Windermere, Whitecraggs offers stunning views over the lake. It is surrounded by over 3 acres of landscaped grounds, made up of rare and exotic species of plant and alpine flowers, which Charles Hough shared his love for alongside William Purdom, otherwise known as the ‘Kew’ Plant Hunter. William Purdom and Reginald Farrer set out on what would later be known as a ‘horticultural triumph’, as they attempted major excavation of this rocky, sandy and stony land. In 1919, what is now known as the ‘rock garden’, was freely opened to the public, and became one of the main visitor attractions in the region. At the northern tip of the lake, centrally placed for the Lake District National Park, there is abundant walking, fell climbing in the nearby Langdales, water sports or simply wandering around charming Ambleside, which dates back to Roman times. From here you can take the steamer to explore villages on Windermere’s shores, as well as Grizedale forest. Shop, pub and restaurant 0.75 miles.

***January to March, Discounts available, please ask.*** It is an easy walk from the train and bus station to our ground floor flat. You will have sole occupancy. It's tucked away in a secluded sunny spot, yet moments away from the vibrant cafe culture that is Windermere. Warm and clean we aim to make you feel welcome.
In a small purpose built block the flat has been refurbished recently and decorated to a high standard. It has one bedroom, guests have the entire flat for their use. There is a shared lawn area, enclosed by hedge and walls. There is an allocated space in the car-park. In the distance, the Coniston fells are an inspiring view, but its just as convenient to walk from the door. Lots of choices, including the lake shore , Orrest Head view point, much loved by Alfred Wainwright, the beech trees of Sheriffs Wood or the unspoilt School Knott tarn.
The mainline train station at Kendal town is called Oxenholme, Lake district. From there a local train service runs into Windermere. The popular cafe culture in Windermere contributes to a vibrant village. Booths is our local supermarket where you will find regional products. A Co-Op and Sainsburys are on the main streets. We are proud of the beautiful scenery, and if you don't want to drive, you will find lots of other means to explore. Walks from the door step take you uphill to small tarns, view points or down through woodland, past pretty streams to the lakes shore. Increasing numbers of accessible paths open up access to people of a fitness and abilities "Wild" and lake swimming is increasingly popular, you may even be joined by an otter! There are many historic houses and sites to visit locally reflecting the poets, craftspeople and artists who have lived here. Even if it rains, you will still find lots to do. The local cinema has a Wurlitzer organ and regular recitals. Visiting orchestras host concerts over summer. There are lots of activities throughout the year. We try to keep an up to date guide available. A new and very successful initiative last year was the winter German market. Our Christmas lights are strung between the streets, Father Christmas arrives by train in December, and local groups arrange regular events through the year. Windermere is well served by Churches. There is a Quaker meeting , and farther afield a Buddhist center, at both of which, people of all, or no faith are welcome.
  • Fiona and her husband Dave are the perfect hosts. Dave was waiting for us at the main street during check in. He escorted us to the house and that felt really special. He then showed us around the house and briefed us about how things work. About the apartment, it is very close to the railway station and the city centre. It's spacious and very well thought of. I loved the attention to detail. There is every amenity in the apartment that one can think of. The backyard is also lovely. In a nutshell, this is the best airbnb I've stayed at. Would definitely recommend it to everyone.

  • There are a lot of places to stay in Windermere but as I passed each one on my visit I thought to myself "It's not as good as Windermere4!" I stayed here with my 4 month old and it was PERFECT. Very walkable to groceries, food, the water, the boats, the train and buses. The accommodations are also set up very well for a baby. The door to the hallway leading to the bedroom is really great for adding an additional sound barrier during naps and such. Fiona was so sweet with the baby I nearly asked her to babysit. The last day I was there it was beautiful so I walked up Orrest Head and it was gorgeous. I was really glad I didn't miss those views! I'd imagine in the summer this is all quite busy but it was all very quiet in March.

  • Fiona and Dave couldn’t have been better hosts - the property was clean, spacious, in a great location and just brilliant all round. Whether it was walking tips or electric candles in case of the storm, nothing was too much - and Fiona even offered a lift into Ambleside to save us a rainy wait for the bus! We’ll definitely be back again soon!

  • A beautiful cosy, warm cottage with amazing views of the surrounding countryside/fells. Sheila was a great host checked on us upon our arrival and left us some of her scrummy lemon drizzle cake. The cottage was immaculately clean and has a great lay out suitable for someone with limited mobility. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return. Thank you Sheila.

  • This is by far the best place I have ever stayed in. Not only is it beautifully layed out and furnished, it is an incredibly "sociable layout". I was looking for a place that had easy access for my mom as she has bad arthritis in her knees and this single level barn conversion was absolutely fantastic. Everything you could ever ask for. I am sure the doors where slightly wider than normal but cant say for sure. The main bedrooms ensuite bathroom/ wetroom had loads of thoughtful and functional features to make life way easier for anyone that usually struggles with standard bathroom layouts. The Kitchen was also thoughtfully considered with an undercounter fridge, Medium level height oven lowered height cooking hob and low level cutlery draw. Although we didn't specifically need these features, I can see it would certainly make it easier for someone bound to a chair to prepare a meal. The most incredible aspect however are the views.... absolutely stunning! Such a warm and friendly welcome. Located out of the way but within a 15 to 20 min drive into town. There is also a fantastic service provides with milk delivered daily and with options to buy a load more groceries and basic essentials ( pretty extensive list of things) delivered to your door..... So if you can't make it to the shops easily... you still covered. Both my Parents and I highly recommend staying here. It is so so so so so nice!

    Thomas2019-12-03T00:00:00Z
  • Fabulous cottage. Beautifully warm and cosy in the winter months. Lovely, light, airy lay out and the views of the hills from the windows are spectacular - it was better than television watching the weather and cloud formations change throughout the day. Beds are really comfortable and bathrooms well equipped and very clean. The whole place is well set out for a person of limited mobility, which we really appreciated. Sheila and Chris are incredibly welcoming and friendly and Sheila's lemon drizzle cake was delicious. We absolutely loved our stay and will certainly be back.

  • The Barn Loft’s location is fantastic, easy to get to from the train station and a minute away from a Coop and restaurants. It was spotless and a nice open space. It was a bit cold at times, but the electric fire and blanket meant we were fine. I would definitely recommend staying here. The highlights for me were the exposed beams, round the corner sofa and extremely comfy bed.

  • A beautiful cottage in an excellent location to go exploring the incredible Lake District. We stayed here for two nights as a base to go and explore. We didn’t know what to expect but we were so happy with not only the property but the proximity to the village which has a number of pubs to choose from as well as a shop, cafes and a big outdoor store. Karen was a great host who always checked in before, during and after a stay. We hope to return soon

  • A lovely property within walking distance of Hawkshead and all it’s amenities. Karen offers a stress free check in procedure, and is an attentive host. Her property supplies all you will require for a self catering break. The bedrooms are clean and comfy, the shower is excellent and the kitchen meets all requirements.

  • We stayed at Lavender Cottage in November to celebrate my dad's birthday - there were four of us and we booked the cottage for 5 so we could each have our own room. From the get go Karen was very speedy at answering our questions very speedily and clearly, including the location and was happy to amend our booking later to include a dog. We found the cottage cosy, comfortable and clean. It was a perfect home from home to explore the surrounding area. Karen was great at providing recommendations - we mixed up cooking in and eating out. The area is lovely - there's walks, lakes and interesting independent shops and fantastic pubs, etc. We found everyone really friendly and of course you're not too far from everything The Lakes has to offer. All in all, a great stay, and we hope we can start again in the future to get in some more walks!

    Michaela2019-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • Had a lovely stay at the cottage . It was a booking for 5 so we had the whole cottage. Karen was very helpful and on hand if we needed anything. The cottage was clean and excellent location . Ideal for a group. Thank you Karen, we will definitely be back

    Tracey2019-11-18T00:00:00Z
  • We are extremely pleased with our stay at Lavender Cottage. When we arrived, Karen was not there but everything was there to greet us, the beds were made and a welcome guide was in the kitchen. The cottage is very comfortable, quiet and functional. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you could have need. Hawkshead is very located to explore the south of the Lake District, near Ambleside, Coniston and Grizedale. The only negative points of our stay were that Karen shortened our booking a few days before the start and that the parking space was occupied by an unknown neighbour.

    Ella2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • Karen was lovely from us arriving at her cottage and even took the time to show us around the village and suggestions on where to eat and the things to do and see with the children. the cottage was lovely and cosy and had everything we needed. Karen even added a lovely touch as it was our anniversary and bought us a bottle of bubbly. the village is a lovely little place and would look at going back :)

  • Sue's place is absolutely lovely. Spacious, bright and welcoming. It is also absolutely spotless, you would never know a dog had been in the house. The beds! Oh my gosh, the beds. We all had trouble getting up each morning as the beds are so, so, so comfortable! There were lots of little extra touches we found made us feel relaxed and welcome. Lots of toys for our daughter, even safety plugs in the sockets, lots of utensils and pans in the kitchen. The location is excellent. We especially enjoyed a drink in the lovely bar of the country hotel only a two minute stroll away. Thanks Sue, we had a brilliant time!

  • I couldn't fault this cottage, it was an absolutely perfect place to stay with a young family. There was everything you could could need and want for kids, and it really made our stay relaxing and fun. The house was spotless, and all the amenities were so lovely; everything was such high quality in the house. The grounds were lovely too, and a great location. Sue, the host, was great - nothing was too much trouble and communication was quick and easy We had a great time and would highly recommend!

  • I almost don’t want to leave an honest review as I don’t want it to become too popular!! It was so great, you honestly don’t need to take anything with you apart from your own clothes and boots! Really comfy, excellent location and really clean. 5 stars all round

  • What a lovely home from home! You might find it difficult to leave! Very comfortable and with everything you might need in the way of provisions. Also loved by our dog - good place to be based for super walks and easy to manage the cleaning up after a muddy walk due to the enclosed outdoor garden, generous hallway and back door! 🐾 Thank you!

The Retreat is in the centre of Ambleside, close to all the amenities and the public transport, but is set back from the road so much quieter than you would expect. It is just behind Ambleside House and by The Copper Pot café which will give you a ten percent discount as a guest. So you can sample the breakfast lunch afternoon meals cream teas, and special teas, coffees, wines and beers.
  • The Retreat was perfect in every way. From easy check-in, to a wonderfully equipped kitchen, welcome snacks, bread, and milk in the fridge we couldn't have asked for a nicer place.

  • Booked for my parents who absolutely loved it! Cosy, clean. Brilliant location central to everything. Little extras such as bread, milk, eggs etc, were very welcome after our long horrid journey to get there during Storm Dennis. No need to go shopping til next morning. Loved it. Will definitely go back.

  • We can't rate this highly enough. The location in the heart of Ambleside is great for non drivers arriving by public transport as the main bus stops are very nearby and the apartment is so peaceful, even though the location is so central. Comfy bed too!

  • This was a really great place to stay (2 adults and a 2 year old). Anthony sorted out a high chair, crib and safety gate for us and we had a lovely time hiking around Ambleside in the hills and the village centre. Would recommend this to anyone, very reasonably priced and a super convenient location!

  • Location is excellent being very close to the town centre and with its own parking space. The apartment was warm and comfortable with a lovely welcome pack on arrival.
