Laide Holiday Rentals

Just booked in Laide

Recommended in Rough Guide, Observer, and The Times Travel, our Bothy and Barrel campsite is an excellent space for couples or families to experience our magical little corner of the Scottish Highlands here on our historic family-owned island. A traditional highland camping experience with lots of extra amenities, such as complimentary bed linens, a kitchen stocked with all the essentials, private shower and toilet, and excellent high-speed wifi.
Enjoy your family holiday in total privacy on your very own corner of a historic family-owned private island. Unlike traditional campsites in the highlands, this "Bothy and Barrel" is just for you with a private shower and toilet facilities, and a kitchen complete with all of the cooking essentials. The barrel is suitable for adult couples or children, while the cabin living room space has a pullout sofa and bunk bed. There is a television and highspeed wifi, with lots of films and board games for entertaining children. All bed linens are complimentary, though bath towels can also be hired out. The Bothy and Barrel run totally off the grid so electricity is also complimentary. Unfortunately, the site is inaccessible to those with mobility difficulties, as accessing the island requires a 10-minute walk down the hill from the car park and crossing a slippery floating foot bridge. Waterproof, high grip shoes are a must and guests are advised to carry torches after dusk.
Dry Island sits in the tranquil waters of Gair Loch (literally "short loch") where the Mackenzies have lived, fished and farmed since the 15th Century. Dry Island's current owner, Ian McWhinney is a descendent of the Mackenzies and still fishes for shellfish from the Island. He is very happy to take visitors out to harvest langoustines, crabs and squat lobsters from his creels. Warm Gulf Stream waters make for a temperate climate which attracts plentiful wildlife, including seabirds, otters and whales which feast on the seasonal bounty of the sea. The loch is circled to the south by the dramatic Torridon Mountains including the 3300ft high Beinn Alligin and Slioch (3215ft), one of Scotland's finest mountains. Inverness is the nearest city to Dry Island and is approximately 90 minutes drive away. Across the sea is Skye, the Isle of Rona and the Inner Hebrides and boat trips to the islands can be booked during your stay. The village of Badachro on the shores of Gair Loch has a fine pub with a restaurant in which to dine and relax after a day in the hills. However you want to relax and unwind, Dry Island has so much to offer.
  • An amazing place with delicious shellfish caught by Ian !!!

  • Great little place, good adventure

    Jenna2017-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay in the badachro bothy and camping barrel. Dry island is an amazing place and our stay was fantastic. Lovely pub, very nearby, with great food and drink. Ian and family were really friendly, helpful and generous. Thank you!

  • Rustic and atmospheric bothy and sleeping barrel. Beautiful location on secluded island with just the main farmhouse on the island.

    Andrew2017-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • A real off the beaten track island experience. Dry island is a gorgeous spot and the cabins provide a glamping experience for families, couples or solo travellers

    Louise2017-06-02T00:00:00Z
  • Idyllic location for our motorbike mini-break. Stunning scenery; fantastic wee bothy (with WiFi and tv); very generous addition of a barrel glamping pod, for a cosy night's sleep; proper, flushing toilet (!!); spotlessly-clean shower; surprisingly well-equipped kitchen; hosts were lovely and we only wished we could have holidayed longer. A Highland gem.

    Felicity2017-05-07T00:00:00Z
  • Did not realize the extreme hike to the island. My wife has foot/knee issues and was very difficult

    Bill2017-05-03T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay with Ian. The island was simply great and it was fun "camping" in the comfortable cottage with heating. Ian was very welcoming and friendly and my dogs loved playing with his friendly dog who sometimes came to visit us ;-)

Located in The Scottish Highlands on The Wester Ross Coast with it’s perfect combination of stunning beaches and mountain ranges. If you are doing the North Coast 500, recognised as one of the world’s great car journeys, we are about a third of the way round, anti-clockwise from Inverness. Set between The Torridon and An Teallach Mountain Ranges, making it perfect for Hill Walkers and Mountain Climbers. The room is a twin bedroom with private bathroom
If you are un-aware Scotland created the North Coast 500 a few years ago to help give the Northern Highlands an identity as a road trip. If you use Facebook there are many groups with information about the area. The North Coast 500 passes the top of the lane and the beautiful beaches of Mellon Udrigle and Little Gruinard Bay are a five-minute drive, both perfect for a picnic and relaxing on. Depending which direction you are coming from, the main route comes through Laide from both directions on the A832 If coming via the Kyle of Lochalsh (North West) from Inverness, you may want to cross the bridge and have a day exploring the Isle of Skye (Laide is approximately three and a half hours from Portree.) From there the route along Lochcarron is truly beautiful and on to the Torridon Mountains. It also gives you the opportunity to travel to Bealach na Ba Road, (Applecross) a driving experience needed with care. Although part of the journey is single track with plenty of passing places. If coming from Inverness towards Inverness / Ullapool (North East) you will turn off at Braemore Junction on the Corrieshalloch Bridge and Gorge, which is well worth stopping at, the bridge a “need a little head for heights” then through the An Teallach Mountains along Little Loch Broom and through Dundonnell, passing Gruinard Bay on onto Laide. Drive carefully as we do have Wild Red Deer and Goats and sometimes they run onto the road. If you are keen on wild life Wester Ross a wide variety of birds, including Golden Eagles, Sea Eagles, Buzzards, Ravens, finches, Owls, sea birds, Cuckoos and many more varieties. From the sea shore you can often see, seals and dolphins and a boat trip from Gairloch offers the opportunity to go whale watching. Red Deer and wild goats are all round and of course the famous Highland Cows are fantastic to see in the fields. Wester Ross has fantastic beaches including Mellon Udrigle, Red Point, Big Sands, Little Gruinard, Slaggan. Walking offers something for everyone, an evening stroll on the beach, forest walks and some of the most challenging mountains in the British Isles. Cycling gives you a slower pace to see everything up close, with many villages as destinations or off road on the mountain bike trails. Every season offers something different in Wester Ross, snow on the mountains and log fires in country pubs to summer days on the beaches
There is a Post office and general store, plus petrol station to fill up for your onward journey. The nearest pub and restaurant is in Aultbea about ten minutes away. Other restaurants and pubs a little further in Poolewe and Gairloch and well worth the twenty minute journey.
  • excellent location, house is clean and beautiful. host is very communicative and helpful. he has a pet dog Marvin, my daughter liked him and played with him. breakfast arrangement was great. will visit again.

  • A gem of an Airbnb, fabulous location, clean and tidy home, super comfy bed, gorgeous kitchen....and log burning stove in lounge.....BUT it is Lewis himself that makes this place truly wonderful. He is an one of a kind host... goes out of his way to make sure you feel welcome and comfortable providing hearty breakfasts and a huge array of useful items to assist you whilst walking in the beautiful landscape....maps, walking rods, compass, books etc etc.... Many thanks Lewis

  • We had a great time at Lewis place. We arrived early and could come in and make ourselves home. We had time to discuss with Lewis and get to know each others. Breakfast was nice and the room we had was great too. We had no phone connexion and could find the house by asking at the post office in the village. We really recommend this place.

This cosy 2-bedroom converted caravan sits beside our home in a quiet crofting community at Achgarve near Gairloch on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands. It overlooks beautiful mountains & is just 10 minutes walk from the sea (see "neighbourhood" details below). The accommodation consists of 2 bedrooms (1 double & 1 twin), shower room with toilet & wash basin, and a well-fitted kitchen/living area with TV/DVD, an L.P.G. cooker, fridge, microwave, kettle & toaster. Electric heaters.
The Sheiling Holidays (comprising B&B, self catering and caravan) are situated 16 miles north of Gairloch and 44 miles from Ullapool. A wide range of meals is available in cafes and restaurants in the local area where you can sample fresh seafood and game. The village of Laide (2 miles away) has a licenced grocery shop. The caravan is ideal for relaxing holidays to "get away from it all". You may wish to use it as a base to discover the scenery and wildlife of Wester Ross. There are a variety of walking opportunities in the hills and on the sandy beaches. You can take a boat trip to spot whales, dolphins, seals and seabirds. There are also many Highland craft workshops to visit as part of the "Arts and Eats Trail", as well as museums at Gairloch and Ullapool. The famous Inverewe Garden draws many visitors with its sub-tropical plantations which flourish thanks to the Gulf Stream. On clear nights in spring and autumn, you may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) thanks to our "dark skies". We are not far the route of the popular North Coast 500 (also known as Scotland's answer to Route 66) which is a 500 mile circuit around the northern Highlands.

  • A very nice stay with Lewis, who was the perfect host. A few reasons to visit Laide: - Great value - Great location - A very knowledgeable, kind and friendly host.

  • If you ever come to this wild, isolated and astonishingely beautiful part of Scotland, you don't want to miss Lewis lovely, warm and cosy room. He offered us everything you would dream of after a long walk on the magnificent beaches including a warm tea near the fireplace, a very comfortable room and a delicious breakfast. But the more important and memorable is definitely the kindness and good advices that Lewis provides. We would love to come back another time if avaliable, so spread the word but... not much ;-) !

    Simon2017-05-24T00:00:00Z
  • Nice place, but what really makes it is a caring, engaged and hospitable host. Like staying at a friend's place, except my friends don't care about me as much. Check out the black-faced ewes of Mellon Undrigle.

  • It was a perfect stay. The room was great and Lewis made our stay better than we expected.. He made for us ''Full English breakfast'' and it was gorgeous. We could also use in the evening the kitchen and washing machine. Lewis even checked for us about fishing places and borrowed his fishing rod. We highly recommend his place for a stay and would stay there again!

  • Lewis is a total gent and his home offers a warm welcome and accommodation on par with any 4 star hotel. And Marvin is adorable. Dinay think twice about staying here - -- you will not be dissapointed

  • Lewis is a wonderful host who welcomed us with a smile and a tip for an afternoon walk. We woke up the next morning to a lovely morning meal cooked by Lewis while chatting with him and getting advice and inspiration for our further journey in the Scottish highlands. The room was nice with a view of the mountains and with a little bathroom. We enjoyed our stay at Lewis’ very much, and hope to return one day.

  • Guy and his wife are really nice people. The house is beautiful and clear.

    Jana2017-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • Very warm and welcoming family, we felt at home! The rooms were very clean and cosy, and in a separate hallway from the rest of the house (providing some privacy for the guests). The shower was amazing; the beds were fine. The dog and rooster did wake me up during the night, but the others in my party didn't really hear them. While the house itself isn't at the lakeside, it is very close, and the surroundings are beautiful! It's also quite close to the Inverewe gardens, which we were interested in visiting. Thanks for having us!

    Anne2017-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • Our host Guy was extremely hospitable in his remote home and farm. Animals were also very friendly. Our accommodations were very quaint and exceptionally clean. Our favorite part was sharing the sitting room with Guy and his daughter.

    Amy2017-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • Guy and Melinda are very nice, always ready to help, to make you feel like home, and to advise you about the things to visit! I would totally recommand them to my friends!

    Rémy2017-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • It was the first time for us to use a private house (not a hotel nor B&B). If you stay at Guy's place, it's like meeting old friends again. There were two bedrooms and two bathrooms available for us. Plus we could use the kitchen. Minus for us: the beds are a bit too small for big people like we are. And we were trying to make as little noise as possible because the host is there as well. And we did not want to disturb the hosts by using the kitchen before them (f.ex. for breakfast) but it was not the case. We loved the dog! The hosts definitely love their pets (dog, horse, cats etc). The place is in the middle of nowhere but we knew it and it was our choice. Not easy to find but Guy explained us very well how to reach the house.

    Daria2017-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • Great peaceful location, warm welcoming and very accommodating host. Great stop of you're doing the nc500

    Hannah2017-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • Living in Guy's house is the best experience in traveling! Guy and Berlina are sweet and nice. Warm and lovely house with adorable dog and cat, it's definitely the best choice.

    YUDI2017-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the remote location of this property. The nearby beach at Firemore is lovely. We appreciated Guy's flexibility in offering us the use of their kitchen to prepare an evening meal. We had a comfortable stay and recommend this AirBnB for a short stay.

Ceol na Mara is a single-storey timber chalet (adjoining the owner's house), perched on the cliffs on the rugged and beautiful coast of Wester Ross. It's an ideal base for hiking, climbing, cycling, kayaking and all sorts of outdoorsy stuff - or just sitting and watching the weather go by. Good for couples, solo adventurers, and families (with kids). Kitchen includes WD, dishwasher, oven, hob, microwave; TV w/ DVD in living room & both bedrooms. Library of books & DVDs - more welcome!
All the main rooms look out to sea, with commanding views across the Minch to Skye, Harris and Lewis. 45-second walk to pebble beach; walk along the shore to a sandy beach, or go to beautiful sandy beaches in Big Sand and Gairloch. The chalet is heated by an air source heat pump, almost entirely lit with LED and powered by a 100% renewable electricity tariff.
Aultgrishan is a small crofting hamlet about 8 miles from Gairloch, on the coast of Wester Ross, in the northwest Highlands of Scotland. Wildlife, views and peace abound. Often the only noises are the sea, the wind and birds. Night skies are pitch black; clear nights bring the Milky Way and - if you're really lucky - the Northern Lights. Shops, restaurants, medical centre, dentist all in Gairloch.
  • This was a great base to drive out to various Munros/Corbetts, and the kitchen was well-equipped for cooking large post-mountain meals!

    Amy2017-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • This has the best views and sunsets. Worth the 8 mile drive out to stay. Well equipped Plenty to do... Beautiful area.

  • John was a really good host! He recommended local activities, told us things about the surroundings and was very very kind if we needed anything. The landscapes are really beautiful and the chalet is really cozy and a perfect place if you want to get some distance from the loud cities for a couple of days! Really recommendable! We will surely come again!

    Lucas2016-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • The photos do not do justice to the splendid isolation and scenery in which this warm chalet sits. The chalet has everything one could need, complete with excellent heating, DVDs and a full kitchen. John is a generous and witty host: he is super responsive and went out of his way to help us and suggest things to do in the area. The chalet sits on the most gorgeous and isolated beach. Five stars!

    Emma2017-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • The warm and cosy chalet is clean and has everything you'd need to enjoy your holiday. The view of the sea from chalet windows is simply stunning and it is conveniently located to enjoy the walks in the wilderness and the beach. The chalet has a wide range of books and DVDs which you can watch on TVs installed in bedrooms and living room. The beds are comfortable, kitchen fully equipped and hot water supply is in plenty. It is also not far from local grocery shops. John is a great host and communicates very well. He made every effort to make our stay comfortable. We'd like to stay here again in future if time and finances allow.

Melvaig is a crofting township, 10 miles from Gairloch, along a single track road, where you will find sheep asleep on the road, red deer running into the distance and huge cattle ambling along the roadside. There are no restaurants, no shops, no doctors, no phone signal. You come to Melvaig because you want quiet, tranquility and amazing sea views and landscape. Otterburn 1 is directly opposite Skye and have views of Rona, Raasay, The Shiants and Lewis and Harris. If you look hard enough, you might even see Canada, yes at Latitude 57, Otterburn is as far north as Alaska and Canada. Melvaig is Norse and stands for the Bay of Bent Grass and has a lovely pebble beach with lots of kelp which can be accessed from the cottage. Otter are regularly spotted down in the sea, playing in the kelp. You just need some patience. Also Sea Eagles and Gannets regularly fly over head and we have a pair of nesting Buzzards who like to soar above the house. In the winter the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis can be viewed from Otterburn 1, in fact Otterburn 1 has 'Dark Sky Status' the only place for miles around due to the lack of light pollution. Our night skies will take your breath away. What to do in the Area? •Walk to Rua Reidh lighthouse •Take a whale and wildlife spotting boat •Go on a shell fish safari •Visit the best Wee Museum in Scotland •Visit the famous Inverewe Gardens •Go horse riding at Red point •Go sea kayaking and spot seals and if you are lucky an otter •Walk along Melvaig beach watching out for our otters, dolphins, whales, sea eagles and seals •Climb Slioch at Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve •Take a walk in the lovely Flowerdale woods •Play on the beach at Big Sands or Gairloch •Go for a round of golf •Buy lovely fresh produce at our local markets, Gairloch Gale Centre on Mondays, Poolewe Community Hall on Tuesdays •Walk the archaeology trail •Visit Ivor’s Bothy near Camas Mor Beach •Lie in the garden, enjoy the view and lick the salt off your lips
  • Otterburn is the ideal place to get away from things. It offers a clean and comfortable space, well equipped and with the most stunning views imaginable. A perfect remedy to the hustle and bustle of life - perfect for watching seals and sea birds whilst drinking coffee in bed! There are fabulous places near by if you are a foodie - seafood safari, mackerel fishing and smokeries. The local ale is delicious as is the local gin!

  • It's our best Airbnb experience. Maria and Mark welcomed us so warmly. The appartement is brand-new and really comfortable. The view on the island is amazing. It's very quiet. We appreciate the sheeps around the garden. The Northern Highlands offer fantastic landscapes. We really recommend.

On a adoré.

Rooms are large and comfortable, kitchen is very well equiped and convenient. The nice garden is an asset for the house and has a place to safely park the car. Shore Cottage offers beautiful accommodation for families or couples looking for a relaxing break in a spectacular coastal setting - directly beside the sea. The land belonging to the house stretches along an acre of coastline, but the immediate garden is fenced. From the house and garden, otters, porpoise, dolphin, seals and many seabirds are often seen.
Shore Cottage is a newly renovated house, completed in 2016. The well laid out open plan kitchen, dining and sitting rooms provide uninterrupted views of Loch Gairloch. There is an adjoining covered deck that allows you to enjoy the great outdoors whatever the weather, and a cosy log-burning stove in the living room for colder days. Downstairs, a TV room allows relaxing evenings for all – no disagreements about what to watch! In addition, there is a comfortable twin bedroom and large shower room downstairs. Upstairs, there are 2 peaceful king size bedrooms with beautiful views over Loch Gairloch, and a large family bathroom.
The land belonging to the house stretches along an acre of coastline, but the immediate garden is fenced. From the house and garden otters, porpoises, dolphins, seals and many seabirds are regularly seen. Shore Cottage is set in both a beautiful and a convenient location. While being within short walking distance of sandy beaches, boat trips, shops, galleries, a golf course, pubs and cafés, it is also in a peaceful secluded area – the perfect spot for relaxing.
  • We arrived as two exhausted souls in need of some rest and relaxation. Shore Cottage is a real tonic. It’s a fantastic house in a stunning location; a real visual treat inside and out. The sound of the sea lapping at the rocks just outside, the ever-changing moods of the water, the peace and quiet; a very meditative place to get back in touch with nature. For the first couple of days we just relaxed in the cottage and enjoyed the peace & quiet and the views of the water through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The weather was rather overcast but this provided some beautiful seascapes of grey mood – cloud over water. If you like photography then this is a great place. Watching fishing boats and their wakes, refraction patterns, birds soaring, the colour of sunset, and never the same. Every day you could wake up to a different mood and picture. A seal came by on patrol almost every day. We explored the peninsula to Red Point. The better of the two beaches is the southerly one, a 20 minute walk from the car park through the farm. It’s a spectacular beach in a dramatic setting, and is really special, from the dramatic views of the mountains all around to the slightly comedic view of the sheep making their way across the sand from the island back to the shore. The bull is friendly, by the way! We stopped at the Badachro Inn for lunch – nice pub in a lovely setting. We also explored the northern road, up past Melvaig and right up to the lighthouse. A fantastic road if you like a challenge! On a greyer day we just spent the whole day exploring Gairloch – it’s a leisurely walk there and back. The Tourist Information place has a nice set of crafty gifts, the people in the Farm & Garden Shop were very helpful & friendly (and are opening a “farm shop” Real Soon), Buddha By The Sea is worth a nose around, Coast Coffee and Hillbillies hippy hang out & bookstore where we spent time browsing (and buying!) a really left-field book selection; they have good coffee and fantastic scones! Gairloch museum and its associated Steading café were also good, there was a lovely wildlife photography exhibition in the museum at the time we were there. The PO/shop on the pier, near the cottage, is good for all your basics, and the Treasure Chest gift shop just next to it is also worth a visit. Our final day dawned blue, hot and cloudless, so we took ourselves off and “did” some of the NC500 route. The northerly route back from Ullapool (the coast road via Loch Ewe) should not be missed. Even from the road, there are spectacular views. The viewpoint overlooking Badluarach, looking out to the Summer Isles, is gorgeous (as indeed are The Summer Isles, but that was a different holiday...). Be sure to stop at the Arctic Convoy museum by the side...

Even when the west coast weather isn't great the house is a great place to spend time with the floor to ceiling windows framing beautiful view of the bay. The wood burner is a nice touch when the evening are a bit chillier. Andrew was a great host, friendly and responsive. The house has everything we needed for a trip to Gairloch

  • We had the loveliest week at this beautiful house. The setting is amazing, the views from every window change continually with the tide and the weather. The house is gorgeous, lovely light and open living space and we loved the unique dining table and nice design touches. The location was ideal as a base to just wander and explore from the house to the nearby beaches, exploring Flowerdale falls or just sitting on the rocks and watching the sea. A really special and peaceful place.

  • Amazing property with great views over the water, we saw plenty of seals and beautiful starry nights. Beds where very comfy, hot water and heating was plentiful and kept us very cosy. There are 3 local stores and a good butchers within walking distance. Plenty of stunning coastline is within walking (or short driving) distance: Red Point, Mellon Udrigle, Slaggan Bay ... Alternatively sit by the fire and look out the window.

Comfortable house overlooking beach and islands. Great hill walking, shore to explore, birdwatching and much more. Come and discover Coigach!
Cottage set up for self catering holidays. Overlooks the Summer Isles, only 80m from the beach. Direct road access to beach. Within a Geopark and on an estate owned by Scottish Wildlife. Quiet and peace abound. My website is here; www.coigachcottage.com Sleeps 4 - 6, there is a shed for bicycles with a work bench and small vice. Double bedroom, twin single room and sofa bed in sitting room. Living room and ample landing area with excellent views. 2 open fires and Rayburn stove for cooking and heating. There is an electric alternative for cooking and heating. Coal provided, all bills included in price. Bedlinen provided but you have to bring your own towels. Well stocked house, there are some games and books. Vibrant crofting community with Community hall, Post office, 2 bars, shop, hotel even a skiff building and racing team! Nearest airport; Inverness Nearest train station; Garve Bus from inverness to Ullapool connects with Caledonian ferry to Stornaway. There is a bus from Ullapool to the top of the road by the cottage.
  • Fantastic cottage. Everything works great: hot water, heaters, coal fires and there is a microwave too. The views from the cottage are amazing (even though there is a very small graveyard close by) and Peter was very helpful prior to our stay. Inside the cottage, there is a visitor's book with other people's experiences and recommendations for where to go and eat. Visitors tend to leave food behind (we found salt, pepper, rice, pasta, tea, etc). We left a nice bottle of wine and half a bottle of gin for the next ones. :) There is also an old acoustic guitar (bring some new strings) and an electric piano for music lovers/players like me. Achitilbuie is very quiet and peaceful but has the essentials; a grocers, a gas station, a few cafes and restaurants. If you don't have a car, renting a car is highly recommended though. If you need to buy anything you can't find locally, the closest supermarket is in Ullapool (1h drive). Don't get me wrong, being that far from the closest town is great and is probably what you are looking for if you're going to the highlands. All in all, this place is highly recommended!

  • We had the most amazing stay. The weather was lovely and the cottage was amazing. The cottage is special as it has an unhindered view of the beach and the summer isles, whereas some of the others looked onto other cottages. We felt as if it were a true escape as we couldn't see other people and just had the breathtaking scenery. The cottage was lovely and warm even though we didn't try the raeburn as we've never used one before and didn't want to chance it. It was very well stocked with everything you need! We could have left half of the things we took with us at home. Many wonderful books to read as well. We lived our stay and are hoping to return again!

  • Brilliant cottage and so nice to get away from the city. Stunning views with great walks and awesome beaches!

    Fergus2017-05-25T00:00:00Z
  • It was our second trip to this wonderful cottage and we loved it again. We arrived in the middle of Storm Barbara - unpacking the car in the gale force wind in the dark was a challenge! The house was quite cold when we arrived but once we got the Rayburn and the fire going, we were cosy for the rest of our stay. We spent Christmas here and it was atmospheric, peaceful and memorable. A true hideaway. We had some fabulous walks even though it was windy and even went to a ceilidh. We adore Achiltibuie and the cottage and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to explore this unique part of the world.

  • Lovely secluded cottage with stunning views over the Summer Isles. We had a family trip over the Easter weekend here with 2 boys who are addicted to their internet and TV, however the lack of those things did not faze them one bit as they has plently to do in and around the cottage. The beach is a 2 minute walk away, with further coastal walks that can take you miles across some amazing coastline. The house is basic but comfortable with an easy to use Rayburn in the kitchen and a fire in the lounge. There was tons of coal in the shed. The top floor landing is large with space to sit and watch the spectacular views. There is a reasonably well stocked local shop about 10 minutes drive away if you've forgotten anything. If you need a big shop though, it's about an hours drive back to Ullapool. So come prepared. There's a few board games, card, dominoes, books etc, but I would also take your own favourite things too for evening entertainment. All in all an excellent, relaxing place to stay if you love quiet seclusion and beautiful sea views.

    Don2017-04-17T00:00:00Z
  • The location is fabulous: the views from the house were even better than we expected; the direct area came out to be the most beautiful part we could find; Achiltibuie offers just enough facilities (groceries, bar with wifi, superb seafood at Salt, and even a low key boat tour) to not leave town unless you want to. You just are really out there. That being said: not much love is put in the interior of the house. It works fantastically as a base for cruising the country (as it did for us, hence the high ranking) but it is not designed to stay inside. Everything works (we cooked, showered, made coffee, slept very well), but it feels old. In communications and services Peter was very adequate and helpful, as were the few people of Achiltibuie we met. We were happy to be there - the location overruled the interior by large. Suggestion: drive the detour from Achiltibuie via Lochinver, Drumbeg towards Unapool and Scourie. It takes hours but you have a good reason to get out the car at least every 15 minutes and walk around. We simply cancelled most plans because we wanted to enjoy the north west coast as much as we could.

    Janjoost2016-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • The journey to the village is magical. The views unfolding at every turn and becoming better as you wend your way towards the sea. We found the house quickly, Peter's directions were excellent. The place is set overlooking the shore with mountains behind and everything was neat and tidy so we could immediately settle in. All instructions were clear and we really enjoyed our stay here, with no problems arising. The local shop is convenient and sells everything you could possibly need or have forgotten to buy from the larger supermarket in Ullapool. The best things about this place are the peace and quiet and the beautiful rugged nature. Pete recommended some great walks to be made directly from the property and a short drive brings you to some spectacular places to explore further. The road towards Lochinver must be one of the nicest drives in Britain. We really enjoyed our stay here and although simply fitted out the house provided all the comforts you could need after a long days walking. Excellent! Thank you Pete. Jon and family

You will be very welcome at our ' wee house', situated in Polglass, Achiltibuie, next to Tigh Uisdean Bed and Breakfast. We are situated on the beautiful Coigach peninsular in Wester Ross. The cottage is light and airy with stunning, panoramic views over the Summer Isles and mountains beyond. Downstairs, there is an open plan sitting room/well equipped kitchen, utility room, bathroom with shower, bedrooms up a 'paddle' staircase. Could accommodate 2 couples, more spacious for 2 people.
Although situsted near the main house, you will have total privacy in the cottage.
Polglass is one of the townships of Achiltibuie on the Coigach Peninsular in Wester Ross, an area of exceptional beauty with dramatic landscapes, renowned for it's peace and tranquillity. Achiltibuie is perfect for leisure pursuits including hill walking kayaking, bird watching. The cottage is in easy walking distance of local amenities. SALT Seafood Kitchen is 5 minutes walk away.

  • We've just returned from a wonderful short break in Polglass Cottage. Communication with Una was quick and easy, despite us booking at the last minute. The photos don't do the cottage justice - it's beautifully decorated, warm, with gorgeous views out over the Summer Isles, and so, so peaceful. The utility room was brilliant for drying off waterproofs and storing muddy boots after a day's walking. It was a perfect base for us to do a range of hillwalks - great mountain routes but also lovely coastal walks nearby. We found the kitchen had everything we needed to cook as a couple, and Una had kindly left us some freshly laid eggs as well as home made jam from Achiltibuie Grows in the village - delicious! Una was also really helpful in booking us a table at SALT Seafood Kitchen (just a couple of minutes walk away) when we couldn't get through ourselves - and that was a fantastic meal out. I'd thoroughly recommend staying!

    Theo2017-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • Una was at home to greet us and give us a tour of the cottage which was very well equipped and comfortable. She even gave us a box of fresh local eggs that we could have for breakfast. The first morning we were greeted by the most stunning views of the summer isles. Drivers must be prepared for quite long drives on single track lanes, but its worth it just for the views. This has to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Charming 2 bedroom house overlooking sea and Summer Isles. Gorgeous bubbling burn next to House with dipping pool. Small walk down the croft to beach. Walking distance to pub and Summer Isles Hotel with famous restaurant.
The Steading has stunning views of the Summer Isles from the combined sitting room and kitchen. You can enjoy your meals in the Sun Porch . A favourite spot of mine is the Sun Porch's window seat, here you can put your feet up , relax and enjoy the view. The Steadings rooms are all on the ground floor, no stairs to deal with, just one step into the sun porch and one step into the hallway of the Steading. The Steading sleeps 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children comfortably, 1 double bedroom with en suite; the second bedroom has two twin beds in a non traditional bunk style as you will see from the pictures, there is also a wee sink in this bedroom. There is a separate bathroom with toilet, sink and bathtub and hand shower fixture. The Kitchen/Sitting room has everything you need in a cosy space, with patio doors that open onto a stone veranda again to enjoy views of the sea.
Achiltibuie, its community, and the ever present mountains and sea are very special to me and all the visitors who come here.
  • The Steading is exactly as depicted, comfortable and warm with a stunning view of the Summer Isles. Host Jo is welcoming and well organised, having sent us a comprehensive information sheet well in advance of our scheduled arrival. This is useful as, while there is a shop and fuel available locally, there's 12 miles of single track between the Steading and a main road. Learn to enjoy the drive in, the scenery is stunning, but then this is Scotland!

  • A cosy house, attractive garden and fabulous sunsets. Jo made us welcome and was very helpful when we needed to find out about local facilities. Thank you very much Jo.

    Heather2015-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • Jo’s place is beautifully set in a series of small terraced gardens on a slope overlooking Horse Island. We found the accommodation ideal as a self-catering couple. The porch has a dining table with fabulous views out to sea, a great place to have breakfast. Recommended walk – up Sgurr an Fhidhleir from Culnacraig, just down the road, taking in either the Ben More Coigach ridge, or Beinn nan Caorach (or both if you have time). Amazing views of the Coigach peaks, and way beyond, on a clear day. Jo was a friendly and welcoming host. Don’t miss seeing her amazing tapestries at the Coigach Community Hall.

  • It was alltogether very cosy, very warm-since the weather was fairly ugly- and very well and artistically situated. Jo is a wonderful person with lots of interests. We coped extremely well with her and all the circumstances described below. Lovely garden with paths and, waterfall and stream from the mountains. Very energetic spot. Thanks a lot,we ll have everything in our hearts, specially you!

  • This is a very dangerous place as it breaks your heart when you have to leave; it was one of our best holidays ever. The cottage was spacious for us as a couple, but up to two children as well wouldn't be a problem. Very comfortable and nice sitting room that is also the kitchen, with a romantic wood-burning stove and excellent views, although our favourite place was the porch where you could see all the birds and rabbits in front, as well as the deer grazing further down the slope. Beautiful walks are possible directly from the cottage, the important only shop and the beaches can be reached by bike, no need to take the car. A place serving excellent sea food is very close, as well as a little cooperative gallery run by local artists. Jo, the host, is a lovely lady who lives next door and will help with anything without being intrusive in any way. We absolutely loved it hee, it is such a magical place.

  • Seascape is perfect - idyllic, peaceful setting at Rhue - nature's land and seascapes came to life through every window - Loch Broom and its lighthouse; views to the Summer Isles - and surely we were looking at what the locals would call "Munro wa" - they are certainly big hills! The house was perfect for us too. Thanks Diane! Thanks for sharing your house with us. We had a grassy time with easy access to so much. Including a great climb up to the summit of Stac Pollaidh!

This is our stunning holiday home in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of the northwest. We welcome a few guests each year, who recognise it and appreciate it for what it is.
The house was built in the 1950's and is well insulated and cosy. The rooms are light and all those on the front have unbeatable views over the bay to Tanera Mor, the largest of the Summer Isles. All of the beds are very comfortable and we supply fine cotton sheets, duvets and towels. The kitchen is fully equipped with a new electric range cooker, fridge, freezer and dishwasher. The central and hot water heating system has just been replaced.
The Coigach peninsula has some of the most stunning mountain and sea scenery in the British Isles. There are endless opportunities for mountain and coast walking, sea kayaking, and watching bird and sea life. The waters nearby are home to some of the best langoustine, lobster, crab and scallops you can find and these can be bought from the fishermen. There is good sea and loch fishing locally. Things to do: Walking – there are lots of walks, both long and short. There are several books in the study with detail about longer walks. Good shorter, local walks include: -walk down to the sea through the field opposite Mullagrach -walk up the hills behind Mullagrach (there is a gate at the end of the garden). The highest of the hills behind the house gives you a wonderful view of the area, and only takes about 20 minutes of walking. -Stac Pollaidh – there is a small car park on the road towards Ullapool for this walk. It’s an easy climb, taking about 2 hours round trip, along a well prepared path. The climb to the very top is more challenging but is optional. -Falls of Kirkaig – Take the single track road towards Lochinver (this must be one of the most beautiful roads in the UK). A few miles before Lochinver, stop at Inverkirkaig where there is a car park plus a café and well stocked bookshop. The well prepared walk takes you along the river up to an impressive waterfall. It is worth continuing on beyond the turn to the falls, and ideally climbing to the top of the hill to your left, to get stunning views of Suilven and the valley beneath. About 2 hours round trip. -Walk from Old Dornie Harbour round the coast line towards Mullagrach. This is challenging at the end as there is no obvious way through fields which may have cattle, so you may need to climb up towards the houses in Dornie. -Drive to Reiff and walk as far as you want round the headland northwards. -Drive to the 3 way junction near Achnahaird beach where you can park, then walk along the right side of the beach, following the coast north west, until you come to Garvie Bay and the river flowing down from Loch Oscaig – walk up the river until you reach the road and return to your car by road. -Drive to Cul na Craig, the far end of the road beyond Achiltibuie, where there is a small car park. There are various walks up the several peaks in the Ben Mor Coigach range. As the weather can change dramatically very quickly, it is important to be properly prepared even on short walks. Summer Isles Cruises: see website above. Well worth doing. Bird watching: remember your binoculars! Fishing: You should catch mackerel from the pier at Badentarbet between July and September (where the cruise boat goes from). Loch and river fishing require a permit. Sea kayaking: this is brilliant. Apparently you can now rent sea kayaks on Tanera Mor ((URL HIDDEN) Alternatively contact Julie-Ann McLeod on (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) or via her website: (URL HIDDEN) . She has her own kayaks and will teach you the basics or act as your guide, round here or near her base in Lochinver. If interested, you should book her well in advance during the peak holiday period. She’s excellent. Dinghy sailing: Again you can apparently now rent dinghies by the hour or day on Tanera Mor ((URL HIDDEN) Climbing: the sea cliffs at Reiff offer excellent pitches for sport climbing, being sea-washed sandstone. They are described as ‘one of the gems of Scottish rock climbing’. (URL HIDDEN) Diving: again brilliant, so long as you are experienced and have your own equipment. Andy (above) is a qualified diving instructor as well as scallop diver and may be willing to take you out to the best dive places on his boat. Further afield (day trips, but can be combined): Ullapool direction: Inverewe Gardens (an extraordinary garden, owned by the National Trust Scotland). Excellent coffee shop in Inverewe Village for afterwards. Worth trying to visit the gorgeous private gardens at Dundonnell House en route to Inverewe – call (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). Corrieshalloch Gorge Lael Forest Little Leckmelm Garden Day trip to Isle of Lewis via the ferry from Ullapool to Stornoway Ullapool museum Ullapool golf course Lochinver direction (slow coastal road or fast inland road): Knockan Crag – geological centre Ardvreck Castle and Calda House ruins on Loch Assynt Handa Island (bird reserve)
  • Mullagrach is a spacious, very comfortable and exceptionally well equipped house with beautiful views over the Summer Isles and beyond. The owner has furnished the home to a high standard. It was lovely to be able to enjoy the artwork throughout the house and the books in the study. Cooking in the spacious kitchen was also a pleasure. Although the weather was kind to us and we were out and about a good deal this is the kind of house which would make a week of rain quite bearable!! The local Piping School Cafe and seafood restaurant SALT are well worth a visit.

  • The House is fantastically located, with an amazing view. You feel really at home, in a warm and very comfortable environment, with everything you could possibly need or dream of. Christopher and Lorna are very welcoming. We highly recommend Mullagrach and would be delighted to come back.

The house is beautiful and the views are just incredible - better than the listing photos. Walks in the area are great with views no matter where you look. The kitchen has everything you need for a big group and we cooked every night except one when we went to the Fuaran Bar where the food was fantastic. We left a bag with games in the house after we left and Christopher was more than helpful in returning it to us. We'd all love to go back as soon as possible.

  • My family (wife and two young girls) and I we’re looking to spend the end of our three week holiday, relaxing in a remote part of Scotland – and I wanted somewhere with a view! Mullagrach in Achiltibuie was perfect. Christopher got in touch ahead of our stay and gave us some great ideas about what we could do in the area, the best local shops and restaurants etc. Pulling back the curtains in Mullagrach every morning to see the picture postcard view of the Summer Isles archipelago is a memory we’ll never forget. The home is really cosy, and very well equipped. We loved learning how to use the AGA cooker (give it a go, it’s actually very simple). There is also a great selection of DVDs and music and the home had unlimited fast Wi-Fi and bicycles to borrow. Alchitibue is very picturesque and is surrounded by stunning scenery, the mountains of the Coigach peninsula are unique, nothing like I’d seen in Scotland before and inspired me to borrow a walking stick from the house and sneak off one morning a try a bit of hill walking - climbing up the popular Stac Polly for some spectacular views. Do take the time to climb up the hill behind the house for some sweeping views of both the Summer Isles, Achiltibue and the Coigach mountains. Also recommended is to book in for dinner at ‘Am Fuaran Bar’, 5 mins from the house for some great local food. There was some local music on at the Achiltibuie community hall one evening while we we’re there, which was excellent. We never really knew about the area before we visited and feel like we discovered a very special part of Scotland, Mullagrach and it’s location is spectacular, I’m quite sure we’ll be back at some point ;-)

  • Arrangements to stay were easy and the house was perfect - well kitted out and very comfortable. We had everything we needed for our short stay and felt very much at home. Above all the location overlooking the Summer Isles is absolutely stunning and the sunsets are amazing. 100% recommended.

  • I travelled to Achiltibuie with a group of friend including a 3 year old boy. And we just didn't want to leave this place... If we would have known, we would have stayed in Chris's house for our entire week of holidays! The view on the summer isles is amazing, the house is just perfect and the area has a lot to offer for nature lovers. The perfect place for relaxing holidays! We'll be back!
