Your guide to Mevagissey

Welcome to Mevagissey

Fishing boats in the thriving working harbour are still as much a focal point in Mevagissey as they were centuries ago — although there’s more to local life these days than pilchards. Twisty narrow streets wind back from the quayside, gathering ice-cream shops, galleries, gift stores, fish and chip parlours, and a couple of attractions, backed by hills. Mevagissey is a great spot for exploring the sheltered coves and fishing villages of the St Austell Bay area of Cornwall’s south coast — quite different in atmosphere to the wilder, surfer-frequented north and west sides. It’s also within striking distance of some of Cornwall’s best highlights.

From Mevagissey you can walk to the astonishing Lost Gardens of Heligan, a magical, jungle-like fantasyland that’s on the wish list of most visitors to Cornwall. The world-famous domed biospheres of the Eden Project are only a 25-minute drive away, and your neighbours include charming St Austell, five miles along the coast, and Charlestown, with its Shipwreck Treasure Museum.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Mevagissey

The Gulf Stream pushes warmer water to this coast, which in turn extends the swimming season. In late spring, there’s often a mackerel run, so you may want to book a fishing trip or hire a rod during that time. Feast Week at the end of June is a centuries-old celebration of the town’s patron saint on St Peter’s Day, with traditional dancing and concerts, boat races, fireworks, and plenty of fish to eat. The Lost Gardens of Heligan often host events, from fairs to kids’ activities. Some visitors love the storms and lack of crowds in the off-season, when you’re allowed to explore the narrow streets in peace. If you’re here in winter, the Eden Project erects a temporary ice rink; or come at New Year to join the locals going wild in fancy dress.

Top things to do in Mevagissey

Beaches

There are so many beaches in the Mevagissey area that it’s fun to get out there and pick your favourite! Pentewan Beach is flat and easy to reach with lots of facilities, making it popular with families. Portmellon Beach is smaller, trickier to reach, and cupped by rocks. Gorran Haven Beach is considered one of the best, distinguished by its cute little harbour and independent shops. Whichever you choose, it’s best to visit during low tide in order to maximise towel space on the sand, especially during the peak of summer.

Pentewan Valley Trail

Head into the woods, where cycle trails follow a former railway line amid luscious greenery, streams, and wetlands. The Pentewan Valley Trail connects to St Austell and Pentewan, which can hook you up with bike hire.

Mevagissey Museum

This excellent free museum was once part of a boat-builder’s yard. It details the town’s history through three floors of exhibits. Check out photographs of village life from the 19th and 20th centuries, fishing memorabilia, and old machinery.
