Places to stay in Smithton
Arguably one of the best positioned self contained spa cottages in the state! A very secluded single cottage Nestled amongst 5.5 acres of tassie bush only 150m from the waters edge. Features a huge outdoor living area facing North with commanding 180 degree views out over Duck Bay, Bass Strait, Perkins, Robbins and Three Hummock Islands.
Our cosy cottage is a replica of a Federation home complete with homely log fires, polished timber floors and ceilings and it is tastefully furnished with antique furniture. Tasmanian oak ceilings feature throughout.
Take a look at the map and you`ll find that Island View Spa Cottage is quite central to North West Tassie`s attractions including historic Stanley, Arthur River Cruises, Allandale Gardens, Dip Falls & the Big Tree, Dismal Swamp maze & slide and of course Woolnorth - the historic village formed by 'Van Diemans Land CO, (Australia`s oldest running company.1825) one of Tasmanias largest farming operations. Our area has some of Australias most beautiful beaches, rain forests and spectacular coastlines. At Cape Grim the c.s.i.r.o`s multi million dollar weather station has scientifically proven our air quality to be the best in the world.
  • Beautiful Views in a wonderful natural environment!

  • Michael is a terrific host and his property is spectacular, quaint and very private. While it is secluded you are only a few minutes drive from Smithton and all its amenities. The views are stunning. A highlight has to be the little native visitors that are there every day. The spa is fantastic and the setting enables you to enjoy the view but keep your privacy. Love the personal touch of the breakfast provisions, especially the bacon and eggs. This is definitely a place you will want to come back to.

  • Amazing as always. Even in bad weather this place still is great. We used the outdoor jacuzzi during a rainstorm- we were warm and protected under the patio. Just a wonderful get away.

    Susan2019-12-16T00:00:00Z
  • This is an amazing property, with spectular views. The front verandah has stunning views across the bay, with a fire and spa bath, ready to indulge. It is so quiet, so if you are looking for that special spot, this is the place. The cottage has everything you need, so sit back and relax. If you need supplies, the butcher in town, Berrys is fantastic. Amazing Wagyu and sausages, perfect for the BBQ. This is a great place more than 10 out of 10.

Woolworths is in a neighbouring town of Smithton so we could self cater as Debs shed all we needed to cook a meal. There was a great bakery in the main street of Smithton and we recommend the Arthur River Cruise

  • Very nice large studio with outside terrace. The queen bed was exceptionally good. A few minutes from the lovely town of Stanley and nicely sheltered from the winds that can be present. Would definitely stay again when next in Tassie.

    Carolyn2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed staying at Sleepy Hollow Cabin #1. It was very well appointed and the bed was comfy. We loved the garden aspect and country views. The location being driving distance to Stanley was good too. Debra gave us some tips to see Dip falls and the Big tree, and we are very glad we went. The forest there is beautiful and the rock formations at the falls are fantastic. We had food and coffee at the Blue Hills Honey farm nearby; an occasion not to be missed. Stunning food in a beautiful setting. And the honey tastings are free... yum.

  • Sleepy Hollow Hideout 2 was well appointed, clean & beautifully presented. Our hostess, Deb, went out of her way to make our stay as pleasant as possible. We spent 4 days there, and could have stayed longer. Well positioned, being an easy 10 minute drive from Stanley, we found Sleepy Hollow Hideout a perfect jumping off spot to explore Western Tasmania. Thanks, Deb & Rob, for a great first experience with Air BnB. Bernadette & Ron, Wantirna Victoria.

  • Alison’s farm is a peaceful place to stay. A great location from which to explore the Tarkine & the surrounding towns & locations. Smithton is close by for supplies , cafes & pubs. The sheep , goats , chickens & even the rooster were fun to interact with & observe. The house was a comfortable place to relax & has everything you need to prepare meals . The bed was comfortable . Fetching eggs from the hen house for breakfast is a cool way to start the day.

    Bart2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely, quiet rural stay with everything you could need to be self contained. The bed was super comfy and kitchen well stocked. Our 7 year old loved looking at the sheep, chickens and horse out the back! The bacon and fresh eggs were a wonderful friendly touch. Perfect base to explore the Tarkine.

Abundant wildlife is resident to Tarkinegrove’s grounds. Bird enthusiasts, photographers and artists will love Tarkinegrove. See the Platypus at dusk. Watch the Brown Falcon family soaring the thermals. See the rare freshwater lobster, Tayatea. At night the action starts, the Devil ‘family’, Spotted Tail Quolls prowl. Pademelons (wallabies), Eastern Barred Bandicoot and Possums will visit, depends on the season. Minimal light pollution, the night’s sky is iridescent. A truly peaceful place.
Four and a half acres of botanical gardens, including a giant pandani, 2 enormous red wood trees along with a copper beech and weeping birches and other specimen trees that you are free to wander and enjoy. A few minutes to the Arthur River and on the South Arthur River Loop. Plus a number of other day trips. It is a fully self-contained two bedroom cottage able to accommodate five comfortably with undercover car parking. Full kitchen facilities and dining area, laundry, family bathroom, lounge with wood firebox. Outdoors a BBQ and Fire pit are available, subject to fire safety restrictions, for dining on the deck under the great Horse Chestnut tree. Your Cottage has its own private acreage bordered by a grove of giant Macrocarpa.
We are 25 mins from Smithton and 35 mins from Stanley, both have excellent cafes, restaurants, and a selection of clubs and hotels. Smithton has an IGA and a well stocked Woolworths store to pick up provisions. The NW Tasmania has the finest foods with Cape Grim Beef. Leatherwood and Manuka Honey at Smithton, Whisky, Ciders and Homemade chocolates at Stanley.
  • A rare convenient place to stay while exploring the Tarkine. Wonderful garden. Unfortunately, the devastating large scale summer 2016 bushfires detract from the wonder that was the Tarkine. Let's hope for gradual recovery.

    Evan2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Even if we had only one night, we absolutely enjoyed our stay at Tarkinegrove. Older style farm cottage set in an old garden. Just the right place if you want to 'be away from it' or just love to be remote and just next to Tarkine forest. Great overnight stop for cycling to/from Arthur River on a highly scenic road with almost no cars. David and Gail were nice hosts as well and we really loved having a chat with them. Good luck with all your plans for Tarkinegrove!

    Matthias2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Very amazing place. And you will very relax here. The place is very good. The landlord and the landlord are very caring for travellers. The place is beautiful. The campfire party can be a charcoal barbecue. The kitchen dining room is also suitable for hot pot. I will definitely come again if I have a chance

    Jhong-Wei2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • This place is kind of unique, sat on the edge of the Tarkine wilderness it's a great base for exploring the forests and coast of the Tarkine. You feel like you're a part of nature with so many birds and other wildlife around. The Tarkine area needs more protection and I feel more visitors would help this - the paradox is more visitors would make the place lose it's wild appeal - you do feel like you have the place to yourself. Anyway if you want to visit the Tarkine and escape the modern grind this is the place to stay. David and Gail are a lovely couple, they'll make you feel very welcome on their beautiful and expansive plot.

    Adam2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • Great location and amenities in a beautiful environment. Communicated well would stay again when next in the north west. Bret

    Michael2019-12-25T00:00:00Z
  • Tarkinegrove is wonderful. Great building and David was very friendly. Great access to the Tarkine tourist drive 😀

    Simon2019-12-20T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place near the magnificent Tarkine national park. The cottage was great , very private, tastefully furnished and had all the amenities for comfortable stay. The place itself is a piece of heaven with a botanical garden of its own which was absolutely gorgeous to walk around and so relaxing. I had great stay at David's place and would definitely return on my next Tassie trip. Do visit the Tarkine park and Trouwatta arch nearby.

Once you step inside you are met with a brilliantly designed romantic interior fitted with high quality furniture and amnesties. Our personal favourite was the electric spa bath with views over Stanley. Complete with beautiful floor lights that gently change colours and make for a beautiful evening. Only a gentle 20 minute walk into the center of Stanley too.

Stanley is a picturesque and charming town that any traveller will delight in. The entire town has preserved the character of yesteryear in its architecture The Lodge, built in 1915 is a house perfect for a family, group of friend or couples.
Charming Historic Masonic Lodge. Ocean views, the beach, The Nut, Dismal Swamp, Sleeps 8. Escape to this very comfortable well appointed private residence. This 3 bedroom house (two queens and two singles with trundle beds) boasts a beautiful bathroom with claw foot bath, stunning entry and hallway, but best of all a wonderfully large living area with a fireplace and a fantastic view of the Nut for you and your friends to relax in. If the sun is shining, take advantage of the cleanest air in the world and sit yourself on the back deck; look over the back fence to the beach and Bass Strait or up to the omnipresent Nut that truly marks Stanley out as a spectacular getaway destination. All the modern facilities mix with undeniable, old school charm to make your stay comfortable in this historic building. You’ll be very glad to have an electric blankets to keep you toasty as you devour a book in bed! If you have children they will delight in their very own cubby-house with table and chairs of their own or the local park just three doors down the road. NOTE: The nightly rate at The Lodge is priced for couples – doors to unnecessary bedrooms will be locked. Additional guests incur a $40 per person, per night fee. Please enquire for special weekly and family rates. NOTE: Firewood is not provided. NOTE . $100 additional fee for Pets.
Fishing is a religion in this town and of course there is The Nut to view and perhaps climb if you have the energy. Enjoy a stroll along Godfrey's beach and take in the view of historic Highfield House. And of course you will need to spend a day at the brand new eco-tourism attraction of Tarkine Forest Adventures. In terms of local food and drink? Well Stanley's you're oyster. Do yourself a favour and head just up the road to The Angel's Share - whether it's for the whisky, the company or the locally handcrafted giftware, you'll be glad you made the effort to walk the whole 40 seconds there from your front door. Spend some time perusing the goods at Providore 24 but of all things in that beautiful shop, my favourite is the olive bread. Take it straight home, lightly toast it, and put some Duck River Butter on there... Thank me later. The restaurants in town are superb. Xander's is a must, even if you're there for a night or two, but if you're lucky enough to be around for the weekend head on down to the pub and watch the sunset. If you've stayed late at the pub to enjoy the local shenanigans, there's no better hangover fix than breakfast at Moby Dick's Breakfast Bar. Don't save Moby Dick's for the last breakfast, once you realise what a gem it is you'll want to work your way through the menu piece by delicious piece (try the Aussie Sunrise!). This really is only the tip of the iceberg and conveniently it's all within 2 minutes from The Lodge, but the more you explore Stanley the more you'll find to love.

  • My husband and I stayed at The Cubby for a couple of nights. Perfect spot for exploring Stanley, close to all the restaurants and the beaches. We loved listening to the sounds of the waves at night which could be heard through the open windows. Really comfortable bed, lovely soft towels and cheese platter on arrival were some of the things we loved about our stay. Sam and Louise also sent us some information before arrival which was really useful and something that not a lot of hosts do. All in all a lovely stay and a place I would highly recommend to others.

  • Occasionally in life , you get to stay somewhere magical. Somewhere that resonates with your heart so much that is an experience more than an accomodation. Tassie cottages upgraded us to the Seaview Cottage. A sweet , simple , cosy space with a million dollar view. Hugged by the bush the front deck it's pure romance but the love affair is with nature. we were there for 'work' and our work is nature so it was perfect. But if you were there for romance of your own or a retrace with your family this cottage would fill your desires. Ready chopped wood for the fire place inside and for the pot belly on the verandah...cuddly big bed in the main room and sweet twin beds in the spare..a claw foot bath inside with a beautiful vista and a spa bath on the deck to soak in the seaview and the fresh air....A fridge full on breakfast - break and bacon and fresh eggs and jams...plenty of milk and tea and coffee...a cupboard of games! It's a drive short along the coast from town...up a steep but beautifully made drive way that gives the height and allows the vista. Dont expect super flash this is way less and way more than super flash...it's delicious! I hope you get to enjoy it.

  • We had a very confortable overnight stay in the cottage. The cleanliness was impeccable and all of the extra bits and pieces in the kitchen made it feel like home. The beds were comfortable and the showers were hot. No noise from the factory across the road. Owner was easy to deal with and helped out when we were unsure about the location of the key. The neighbouring building was off-putting when we first arrived...but the cottage was just so lovely that we soon forgot about that. Thanks for a great stay.

  • Claire's place is perfectly gorgeous and ideal for slowing down and relaxing. It is nestled in remote bushland and the location is utterly tranquil. It was an eye opener for me to see such a glamorous off grid home secluded deep in the forest. It is also a perfect departure point for Rocky Cape National Park. Highly recommended.

  • The place is in very remote and beautiful location, perfect for relaxing, taking in nature and watching the stars. Claire and the dogs were amazing and friendly. Yard is big and beautifully maintained. We were happy to experience such an eco friendly air bnb with solar power, wood fire heating and natural water sources.

  • Absolutely outstanding location and hospitality! Such a thoughtful host who looked after both us and our two dogs with exceptional friendliness! The perfect escape to get away from the city and experience tranquility!

    Robert2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • Claire’s rainforest retreat is amazing! It has moss for grass and the most beautiful creek with platypus and large blue lobster (if you’re lucky enough to see them!). We booked the hut but it was cold and Claire offered us the loft, was warm and beautifully done up! It’s a great mix of creature comforts and nature to relax and explore. We would definitely love to come back sometime!

    Nathanial2019-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • Claire offered a spotless, quirky offgrid accommodation in beautiful forest. She made sure we were comfortable and gave us excellent local tips on where to go. Her home is a stunning retreat and is highly recommend it to people who want to escape chaotic city life and unwind in nature.

  • Congratulations Clair. Great location, exceptional comfort in the home, a real getaway from the madding crowd. Fantastic for those who want piece and quiet in a treefern valley with pristine stream. I reccommend to all.

Views views views! Little Talisker is a luxurious cottage in Stanley. In an amazing location, backing onto the Nut and looking out over the beach. You will love the chic coastal interior, artwork, and stunning fit out. The stone and rusty steel courtyard is a fabulous private space to BBQ and entertain with towering Nut views above you. Little Talisker built in 1892, is in the heart of Stanley and is a short stroll to the Nut, cafes, award winning restaurants, beaches and galleries.
Namesake... We named the cottage after Talisker House which was built in the 1700s on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. My husband spent much of his childhood playing in Talisker House and exploring Talisker Bay. Both houses are steeped in history and situated on spectacular small seaside bays with a towering volcanic rock behind. About the cottage... Litttle Talisker is our pride and joy. It is our family escape, in a charming seaside village. The decor is stunning and based around a relaxed “Hamptons” coastal style. Decorating and collecting art is a bit of a passion and whilst the cottage is charming on the inside, it is the sweeping beach views and majestic Nut views which make it truly special. We’ve created a beach house for relaxed family holidays. You can read, play games, watch movies from the DVD library and enjoy the large selection of quality magazines and coffee table books. There is also free wifi for those who want to stay plugged into the outside world. The kitchen, dining and lounge are open plan with breathtaking bay views to the front and the towering Nut views behind. One bedroom is downstairs and the other two are dormer bedrooms which are accessed via modern wooden stairs. The beds are all queen sized and linen, pillows, blankets and throws are high quality to help guarantee a good nights sleep. The large stainless steel kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, with gas stove and cooktop, dishwasher, a marble topped kitchen island and ample cook books. Just stock up on groceries from the local providore and supermarket so that you can self cater and enjoy. There is a coffee plunger, coffee perculator and Nespresso pod machine for your enjoyment. There is air conditioning and central heating to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. The stone walled BBQ courtyard has majestic views of the Nut towering above and is perfect for outdoor entertaining. The outdoor shower is fabulous for rinsing off after the beach. My husband is a landscaper and stonemason, and designed and built the courtyard walls with his brother. The volcanic stone was sourced from local farms around Stanley, and the farmers were paid with a bottle of Talisker whisky! Little Talisker is child friendly for families to enjoy. There is a retractable child gate at the bottom of the stairs, portacot, highchair and the courtyard is fenced. You can throw open the french doors in the dining room and relax while your children play in the fenced courtyard. The bathroom is stunning with black limestone floors, a shower rose bigger than your head and Nut views. The laundry facilities make the self contained cottage a breeze to enjoy. The artwork A large water colour painting of Talisker House on the Isle of Skye takes pride of place above the mantelpiece in the kitchen. The cottage is full of original artworks which have been chosen to create a relaxed coastal vibe and make each space feel unique. There are artworks by talented local artists and a variety of paintings, stunning blue & white China and one of a kind decorative mirrors throughout the cottage. The large rusty steel screen in the courtyard with cut out vine leaves was commissioned for the space and makes an ideal privacy screen. The small metal birds in the garden were sourced from a local artisan at the recent Highfield Garden Spectacular. Even the kitchen island is a one-off piece which started life many years ago as the desk of the chief financial controller of Boags Brewery in Launceston. Full of History... Little Talisker cottage was built in 1892 and originally housed the family who ran the large shop which used to be next door. Many large local families have resided in the cottage over the last century from fisherman to lighthouse keepers and paperhangers & decorators. One family had eight children, before the upstairs bedrooms were added, and we can only imagine where they all slept! We’ve exposed the convict brick fireplace, original Baltic floorboards and unearthed the top of an old well high up in the garden (now filled in). The surrounds It is situated on a one way heritage street lined with similar cottages which nestle into the base of the towering Nut, and have sweeping views of the beach below. Playgrounds, beaches, Nut, chairlift, galleries , award winning cafes and restaurants are located at either end of the street and you can walk to all amenities. Stanley is also a fabulous base to explore the beauty of the North west coast and an easy day trip to many attractions. We encourage you to take some time out from your busy lives and immerse yourself in life at Little Talisker. Credit to David Murphy of the Cow n Calf Gallery in Stanley for taking such amazing photographs of our cottage.
Little Talisker is in a heritage street of century old cottages nestled under the Nut and facing spectacular Tatlow beach on Sawyer Bay. Situated in Stanley it is within easy walk to the providore, supermarket, cafes, galleries, award winning restaurants, Cellar door and the Stanley Hotel. Explore nature and see the wildlife on the Nut, where mutton birds nest and potaroos abound, or see the fairy penguins on the beach at dusk. Stanley village is a hive of activity in the summer and gets quiet in the winter. We adore spending time here all year round and love each season equally. Immerse yourselves in the rhythms of this quaint seaside village and the spectacular and rugged north west coast.

  • The cutest little cottage in Stanley. We loved enjoying a whisky on the front porch in the evening overlooking the bay. The courtyard was lovely and sheltered during the day, just look up to see the nut! Inside was light, bright and spacious with a fabulous kitchen and the beds were beautifully made and very comfortable.

  • This cottage is amazing: awesome views, great location, very tidy and stylish. But best of all it felt like a home away from home: it is cosy and has everything you would want in a beach stay. Kerry is obviously a top host. Will be recommending Little Talisker to family and friends.

  • Fiona's home is beautiful! We absolutely loved our stay here. The house was absolutely perfect for us - six adults and two children - and had everything we needed for the best weekend. It's so close to the beach and was an excellent location for visiting Stanley and Rocky Cape National Park. Fiona had gone the extra mile to make us feel welcome - the children loved visiting the chickens in the back yard in the mornings. We can't wait to return to Sisters Beach and to Fiona's home.

  • Great hospitality and a comfortable place to stay. Close to town centre and a great base from which to explore the north west of Tasmania.

  • As ex-Tassie residents our trip was for the purpose of spending Christmas with family still in the area. Amanda’s place made us feel right at home. Impeccably clean, great comfy beds and a very well appointed kitchen. Good communication and easy check in. Lovely little surprise touches made for a delightful stay.

  • Amanda's place is amazing. Modern, clean and comfortable I highly recommend it as a base to see the local area and Stanley is only 15 minutes away. Amanda also goes the extra mile to meet your needs. Awesome stay. Thanks so much.
