Holiday rentals in Trearddur Bay

With wide, crescent-shaped sandy beaches and turquoise waters, Trearddur Bay is a small community on the western edge of Holy Island, off the Isle of Anglesey in northwest Wales. The bay’s clean, sheltered shores are patrolled by lifeguards all summer, making this a safe destination for swimming or trying out water sports. You’ll spot sailboats bobbing off the coast, as the bay offers excellent sailing conditions, and the town is home to a sailing club. If you’re interested in getting out on the water, you can rent paddle boards, jet skis, and fishing boats in town.

The closest town to Trearddur Bay is Holyhead, just five minutes away. Here you’ll find the Short Stack Lighthouse, museums in historic buildings, and medieval ruins. Rugged cliffs stand high above the blue-green water just outside of town, not far from the Port of Holyhead. In the area surrounding the port you’ll find speciality shops and several restaurants with amazing views, where you can settle in for a meal featuring freshly caught local halibut or lobster.

Western Wales and the waters of the Irish Sea create a mild oceanic climate for Trearddur Bay. Summers tend to be short, moderately warm, and sunny, ideal for surfing, sailing, and swimming. While mid- to late summer is the warmest time of year here, the spring and early summer months are the driest. Springtime in Trearddur Bay is an excellent time to look for cottage rentals, as the weather is conducive to hiking and cycling. But the season for fitness and outdoor activities in the broader Anglesey Island region — such as the Anglesey Half Marathon in September, which is accompanied by live music and all-ages activities — extends until the rains pick up in late autumn, and all of the island retreats indoors for the cold, wet winter.

St Cybi’s Church

This church in Holyhead was built as a monastery by St Cybi in 540 AD within the ruined walls of an abandoned Roman fort. It was attacked by Vikings in the 10th century, and again by invading English troops in 1405. The oldest parts of the church still standing date from the 14th century. The church is still in use, and much of it has been restored or is undergoing renovations to preserve the original structure.

South Stack Lighthouse

Just off the western shores of Holy Island on the tiny South Stack Isle, this magnificent 1809 structure is still a working lighthouse. The 28-metre tower stands tall on rugged, grey coastal cliffs above the churning waters of the Irish Sea. You’ll have to descend 400 steps and cross a suspension bridge to reach the island, but the views are worth it.

Parc Arfordirol/Penrhos Coastal Park

Along the waters of Beddmanarch Bay on eastern Holy Island, this nature park offers opportunities to lounge on sandy beaches and explore rock pools and woodlands. Cyclists can set off from Holyhead, following National Cycle Route 8 past Penrhos Beach on the way into the park, where the route joins the Anglesey Coastal Path. Keep an eye out for red squirrels as you explore; you may discover the small pet cemetery, where you’ll see some headstones from the 1980s.
