Places to stay in Vinalhaven Island
Affordable two-story 1850s farmhouse-style attached bungalow a half-mile walk from ferry and short walk to town. Attached to the main house where the owners reside in a separate closed-off space. You have private entrance. Walk to town and ferry, which makes life easier during peak months without a car. Tons of books and games and charm. Old-fashioned glider out front. Maine Cottage furniture inside. Shower stall. Occupancy max two adults, one child under twelve okay for third person. No pets.
Authentic island home built in 1850. Not a fancy place for people wanting modern amenities and living. Vinalhaven is a place to escape mainland life and go back in time to a simpler way of life. People don't lock their doors on the island. Children play freely on their bikes and roam carefree around the island. Slanted floors, galley kitchen with lobster pots and everything needed for cooking. Faces south so lots of light. In-town, near amenities, ferry. Strict enforcement of maximum occupancy two adults with one child 12 or younger. We offer one of the lowest nightly rates on the island so do not want people piling in and will report to Airbnb if that happens. No pets. The house is old so we limit adults to minimize wear and tear. If you have three adults or more, or a pet, book a larger freestanding house on the island. One bedroom upstairs has twin beds, bureau, and chaise longue; the other double bed is at the top of the stairway landing with a small desk and morning sun.
We are in-town so easy walking around. It’s a mixed neighborhood of locals and summer people. Beautiful harbor scenic overlook is a short walk away on Blueberry Lane. Also short walk to the fascinating historical society. Excellent restaurants, art gallery, bike and kayak rentals, grocery market, bars, and wine shop all within walking distance. Three-mile roundtrip walk to stunning Lane’s Island Preserve overlooking the ocean. Picnic tables there. Grab lunch to go in town and walk there.
  • Very responsive and accommodating host! Perfect little place for a quick getaway or longer stay. The place comfortable as soon as you walked in the door and got the lay of the land.

  • We loved our stay in Caleb's house in Vinalhaven. It's close enough to the ferry to walk to the house, although Caleb was kind enough to collect us. The house itself is full of atmosphere, and very quaint. It's clearly a booklover's home with lots of books, and tranquil corners to write in. Vinalhaven really is a haven! Such a beautiful island where everyone is so friendly and the nature is stunning. We hope to return one day!

    Noelle2019-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • Caleb’s space was great. Old, but not shabby in any way - with very nice character and privacy. His book and magazine collection is great. Comfortable bedding. The location is very central to town and the ferry but out of the way enough so it’s not right on the road. Caleb was very responsive and accommodating. The island is awesome and when we return next summer hopefully we can rent this great little spot again.

  • What a quaint place. Conveniently located. Highly recommend Caleb’s place. Definitely would recommend Vinalhaven! Locals were very friendly. Sand bar fun place to eat at. Everything is within walking distance from ferry. Great place for sea glass and shells.

Cars may be rented on the island, and there is also a taxi service. Concerts, lectures, bean suppers, nature and bird walks, and other events are regularly sponsored by various island groups and organizations. The Vinalhaven Historical Society boasts an impressive exhibit on the island’s history, from its 18th century roots as a fishing and agricultural community to its heyday as a significant producer of granite for some of the nation’s most important buildings including the Washington Monument and the U.S. Customs House in New York City. Guests can enjoy a round of golf just across the Fox Islands Thorofare, on North Haven Island. A guest binder provides you with all you need to know to enjoy your island experience. Cell phone access can be arranged via a cell booster on premises (AT&T customers get reception but for all others there is limited coverage on the island).
Located in a quiet neighborhood of charming antique homes within two-minute walk to the village and ten minute walk to Lane’s Island preserve and the ferry.
  • This was a wonderful place for my two daughters and me to enjoy a special weekend together. We left our car in Rockland and upon arrival in Vinalhaven it was a short walk (ten minutes or so) from the ferry terminal. The house is comfy and the view of the harbor so lovely. Perfect for enjoying morning coffee and reading before going out to walk the trails or wander through the village. Vinalhaven is a great place to explore on foot and Anne's place a great home base. We would love to return.

  • Lovely and charming home and location. Bob, hosting. was very personable and very responsive to my questions regarding eateries etc. He recommended an amazing hike very close by on the Preserve. Stunning views! Everyone I met in town was very friendly. Super easy to get around on bike or foot. Not a super touristy experience which I liked. Anne was very attentive to my reservation and details finding the cottage. The apples and chocolate , coffee and creamer in fridge were very nice touches. The fireplace made all things cozy and was a draw to my stay at Harborside. During the beautiful but chilly Autumn season. Thank you both. I would definitely recommend your place!

    Bernadette2019-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • This place is absolutely amazing! The view of the water is incredible, and its just a short walk to main street. We already want to go back.

    Benjamin2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Everything was good, it's the kind of place where I could see a small group enjoying a long weekend or week long stay.

    Wayne2019-10-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is an outstanding location on Vinalhaven for convenience to the ferry, downtown, the island's wonderful nature preserves, restaurants and activities. It's also a comfortable home, easy to feel at home while on-island.

    Sherry2019-09-25T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful weekend in Vinalhaven and Anne's place was just right for us. A cozy space with lovely views and a very short walk into town for restaurants and shopping. Anne made sure we had everything we needed. I highly recommend and would happily stay again when we are back on the Island.

    Janice2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Anne’s place is a gem. She’s provided so many thoughtful touches, and is immensely warm and welcoming. Her place is perfectly located; close to the Main Street but far enough away to be quiet. I loved sitting and looking out those huge windows. Be sure to check the picture of the ladder to the sleeping loft, it required some extra thought in the middle of the night. All in all, one of the coziest spots I’ve stayed with one of the best hosts.

    Suzanne2019-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay! Central location close to all shops and dining. Highly recommend Anne's place it is fantastic!

Many memories have been made in this house, which was lovingly restored by my parents 20 years ago. Enjoy amazing views and ocean breezes from just about every room in the house. Conveniently located within walking distance of town, the ferry, and Lanes Island preserve. A kitchen & dining room with harbor views. Large living room downstairs and cozy den upstairs, there's plenty of room for visiting and relaxing. Large lawn for gatherings. Wonderful space for family or a solo retreat.
  • Perfect place to rent with a family. Charming farmhouse in an excellent location for walking to town. So happy we got the chance to stay here.

  • Our family really enjoyed our stay at Lydia’s family’s home, conveniently located close to town and with lovely hilltop views. The house is roomy and warm, and the kitchen is fabulous and very well equipped. Lydia’s local tips helped steer us to some wonderful hikes. We can’t wait to return!

    Olivia2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • Lydia's place is 5 min from the ferry, and is a great place to stay. The kitchen has all the pots/pans you would need, and the house is large. Plenty of natural light in the dining room table for breakfast.

    Ronald2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • Clean. Comfortable. Convenient.

    Thomas2019-10-31T00:00:00Z
  • Lydia's place is a beautiful house with views of the harbor and plenty of space -- we came as a family of 3 but could easily have shared the space on a group vacation. Everyone we met on Vinalhaven asked us where we were staying, and they all knew Lydia's place. We loved it and absolutely would stay again.

    Matt2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely loved and adored this home, as did my family.Every time I go to vinalhaven I want to book this house!!! The only bummer is that there was no wifi so the kids couldn't watch movies but other than that I loved it!

  • This home is so charming, with lovely views and a convenient location to town! It's our second time staying there in under a month.

If you’ve ever fantasized about living in a restored barn, this is an opportunity to give it a try. The rental is an apartment in a barn that is attached to the small farmhouse with a shared ell. It is private, yet your hosts are just steps away. The house sits atop a hill overlooking a cove on Vinalhaven, an island 12 miles off shore from Rockland, Maine, accessed by the Maine State Ferry Service. The ferry ride to the island is approximately one hour and twenty minutes, and is a colorful introduction to the island, filled with visitors and locals returning from shopping on the mainland, kids, dogs and shopping carts in tow. The house is in a working neighborhood - fishermen, caretakers, carpenters, professionals, as well as some summer residents. There are cove and ocean views from the apartment’s upstairs bedroom, yet it is in a cozy neighborhood just a ten minute walk from Vinalhaven’s tiny waterfront downtown, which has a library, church, a medical center, art gallery, a few restaurants, a good market, a wine and cheese shop and a coffee shop. In the summer there is a weekly flea market and the local fisherman’s co-op has lobsters minutes from the sea. Visitors like to hike the many nature preserves and explore the stony beaches and working waterfront. Cell phone coverage is limited on the island, but there is wireless internet. A small sunny deck off the open-plan kitchen/dining/living area looks out over the lawn and garden. The kitchen is fully equipped, and there is a beautiful Danish woodstove for use if the nights are chilly. The upstairs bath has a soaking tub with handheld shower. Please note that after Labor Day the island is much quieter - restaurants may be closed or have more limited hours, etc.
We love the mix of people in our neighborhood - year-rounders, summer people, and everything in between. If you are looking for a very private, more isolated setting, it may not be the best choice for you. Most folks who stay find it really nice to be close to 'everything'. (It's a small place!)
  • Another great vacation at the barn on Vinalhaven. You really couldn't ask for a vacation accommodation that feels more like home. We had plenty of fun exploring the island and hiking, but when it got cold or misty we curled up in front of the wood stove with a book and a cup of tea and felt right at home. Loved it.

    Zachary2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful place with a great location and incredible hosts! The space was clean, cozy, and welcoming. There were many thoughtful touches around the house (fresh scones when we arrived, flowers and root vegetables from the garden, maps and brochures for Vinalhaven’s many preserves) and Anna gave us some great recommendations for what to see and do around the island. We’re already wanting to plan another trip!

    Haley2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • So comfortable. A thoughtful focus on simple living. Nostalgic without being old. This was above and beyond my expectations and I hope I have an opportunity to come back.

    Michelle2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • Georgeanne’s barn apt is beautiful, clean and simply, but functionally furnished. We loved the amazing garden. The bed and bedding were very comfortable and kitchen was wonderfully appointed. We cooked all our meals in and incorporated seasonal goodies from the garden: raspberries, blueberries, tomatoes, fresh herbs and lettuce. We would love to come back! Cindy and Bill

    Cynthia2019-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • Anna was a wonderful host. My wife and I had the best time staying in the beautiful refurbished barn and greatly enjoyed exploring the beautiful garden directly outside the door. If we come back to Vinalhaven, we will definitely try to stay here again, and will be recommending this location to all of our friends and family!

    Taylor2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful spot, a home away from home. Centrally located, exactly as described. We had a fantastic time, Anna is a marvelous host, a prompt communicator. We hope to return next year!

  • The ideal Air Bnb experience. Quick responses to all of our questions about the space, absolutely beautiful and private apt and very close to town. Can’t imagine a better place to stay!

  • The Rose ELL cottage is as charming as Vinalhaven Island is itself. It is the quintessential Maine experience. The environs filled with countrified charm. It is the perfect place to discover Maine heritage and experience a working waterfront. One can manage just fine without a car. The cottage is an easy 15 minute walk from the ferry and convenient to downtown. Verizon cell service was not available on the island but the cottage does provide WiFi service. It’s a great place to unplug, relax and recharge one’s personal batteries.

  • The advertising description and the photos are accurate. Amy and Craig offer professional yet warm hospitality and just the right amount of privacy. They were so welcoming of my dog, Lady, and me. Expect to be able to peruse alot of books, board games, and DVDs including old favorite shows series on DVD - like my fav, "3rd Rock". The location is perfect with a library next door, and all points downtown within easy walking distance. Plus, this summer the roads received well-needed re-paving, so they all look like new! I don't think there were many old paved streets that did not get new paving. Even the Ferry parking lot got a new look. Pretty impressive. I loved my stay at the Vinalhaven (formerly The Downeaster). Wait until you see just how thoroughly this couple is restoring this historic Inn. Again - impressive. I'm glad I stayed there. I can see why it's a popular place!

    Judi2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • Amy and Craig are caring and thoughtful hosts. You won't be disappointed! The location, too, is perfect - walking distance to downtown and for walks-about here and there - all easy-peasy! For an avid reader and researcher, being right next to the library is perfect! Hungry? The kitchen has everything a cook needs. Want to grill outside? There's grills available too - complete with all utensils. Clean, lovely yard and landscaping. Adequate privacy. Comfortable sitting-areas outdoors to read, write, or enjoy friends and family. And for rainy days - there's more DVDs then anyone could possibly watch - plus - books, books, books all guests' use. Thoughtful.

    Judi2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • We have stayed here twice, and we absolutely love it! The location is perfect - easy walk to town as well as to Lane's Island and many beautiful places. The apartment has everything you need (and more!) and Craig and Amy are gracious hosts. It's a perfect vacation spot for exploring the Maine coast islands.

    Elizabeth2018-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay here. The home had everything you could need. It was very peaceful and quiet. Amy and her husband were kind and helpful, they even aired up our the tires on our bikes. We would definitely stay again.

    Sheila2017-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • This is the perfect place to stay on a magical island! My son and I loved everything about our accommodations, especially since it's right next to the library (and we really love books). We were in walking distance of the ferry, Main Street, Lane's Island, the school, parks, and playgrounds. We were surrounded by beauty, and deliciously ripe raspberries too. We brought our bikes and enjoyed exploring on the quieter streets. The apartment is well cared for, and the rooms are spacious, lovely, and clean. When the windows are open the ocean breeze feels and smells amazing. Craig and Amy are so kind and thoughtful. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quiet place to spend some time near the ocean. For us, it was a dream come true.

  • We had a fantastic ten-day stay at Amy and Craig's place! They were super friendly and helpful with all questions we had, communication was always great. The apartment is spacious, sunny and quiet. The kitchen has everything you need for cooking. The apartment is very well located - a short walk from the main street and the ferry, and in walking distance to two of the three swimming quarries. Vinalhaven Island is a beautiful vacation place. You can go hiking, kayaking and swimming in the quarries. Thanks for everything Amy and Craig! We would love to come back soon!

  • Amy was right there when we arrived, welcoming us to her home. The apartment was just as described and had everything necessary for a comfortable stay. The house, neighborhood and entire island was quiet and relaxing. We truly enjoyed our 4 nights. Oh, and the binder full of information from the wireless logon to maps and menus was so helpful!

A stunning yet laid-back waterfront property with 800' of private access shoreline along the Reach (Ferry Route) on Vinalhaven's Southwestern side. Large enough to host several generations with enough offerings to keep them entertained :) I'll do anything I can to make your stay as special as possible, just let me know if there's anything I can help facilitate. Lobster bake? Easy. Tips for making the most of your stay on Vinalhaven? Included. Guided trips? Can do! Shoot me a message!
Originally built in the 1850s, and extensively renovated in 2018, the property and house provide an incredibly unique private getaway for groups of all sizes. The 7-bedroom home is spread across three buildings, providing incredible diversity in sleeping arrangements for big groups and families. From a professional stove in the kitchen to a sweeping deck that transitions into a yard filled with flowers, the home and grounds have everything necessary to fully relax, to explore, or to host and feed all your guests. The property is one-of-a-kind: a private enclave of forests, gardens, vistas and water acces. With over 800' of waterfront and a unique wholly-contained peninsula, there are plenty of areas to explore on the property itself (let alone the neighboring harbors and huge tracts of public land across the street).
Vinalhaven is really like nowhere else. An incredible community fueled by a year-round working waterfront, it's a rustic mix of the best of Maine. Nestled in a working harbor with views (and access) to the open ocean, the house is ideally situated to make the most of it.
  • What a great place! The location is perfect. Very close to the ferry terminal and to downtown. Absolutely gorgeous views of the water. The kitchen is fully decked out. There are even steak knives and lobster crackers. Plus a grill in the back for cooking anything you pull out of the sea. The space is tastefully decorated and well laid out. There's only one full bathroom inside, but we made it work. The sewage system is sceptic, but that wasn't a problem. There were a bunch of mosquitos, so pick up citronella in town. All of my relatives who stayed and visited congratulated us on finding such a wonderful place. Thank you to Tyler and his family.

  • Our group of friends loved visiting Tyler’s place. The house has everything you need to truly enjoy your stay. There was plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the tranquility of the property. I can’t think of a better host and place to stay for vacation.

    Zeben2019-09-07T00:00:00Z
  • This place is amazing! Myself, my husband and 7 of our close friends (plus 2 kiddos) stayed here for a long weekend and it was far better than I could have ever imagined! This property has to be seen to be believed. There was so much space to move around that not once did anyone feel too crowded. Claire was very responsive and gave great tips and advice. (Make sure to book your car reservation on the ferry a month in advance!) There is no cell service on the island but the wifi on the property is phenomenal. Can't wait to go again next year!

    Shannon2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Such a magical spot - great for all ages. Make sure to stay for several days in order to experience this spot in all types of weather, fog, and sun!

    Greta2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • As hard as it is to believe, this listing doesn’t do the place justice. While it looks beautiful in the listing, Tyler’s place is stunning! The views from the back yard, the land to wander, and the inlet to launch a kayak can’t be beat. You will not be disappointed staying here. Also, Tyler is an incredibly thoughtful and responsive host . Sent out reminders to reserve the ferry. Made himself available throughout our trip with recommendations of places to see on the island. When we arrived, everything was as expected to check in. Received a note from Tyler to ensure we made the boat to the island. Enjoy!

    Darryl2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • Great location

    Ruben2019-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic week with our three sons and their families. The kids had a great time scouring the shoreline for crabs and such, we all went exploring on kayaks and paddle boards, and swam in the quarry. Tyler put us in touch with a retired lobsterman who took us out on his boat. We hauled in the lobster for our dinner that night. The kids, young and old, had a blast doing it! It was a highlight of the trip. We all used the outside shower, almost exclusively! The property was perfect for our family to spread out and be comfortable. Tyler was very quick to respond with any questions we had while planning our trip. Everything we needed was there; lobster crackers, coffee grinder, French press, grill, etc. Anyone going to the island with a car should pay close attention to reserving a time on the ferry. It’s a little complicated, but worth the trip! The island folks are friendly and helpful. It is a working lobster village, not a tourist trap. All in all, a fantastic week!

    Susan2019-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • What a great spot to experience Vinalhaven. Plenty of sleeping place (bunk houses are sweet), great kitchen, beautiful waterfront view, and the heated outdoor shower is the kicker. Short drive/bike into town, to the quarries, or the basin, but honestly we could have just spent all our time at the house swimming, kayaking, and relaxing. Our hosts were extremely friendly at every step of the way. Would absolutely come back and stay again. One word of warning: the driveway can be a bit treacherous, especially at night, so use caution. Other than that, no complaints!

  • What a fabulous place. As an artist, I loved staying in a studio space. It’s an open floor plan and open to the second story sleeping area. A fabulous place to have quiet time; a beautiful property to walk on and enjoy the meadow view, read in the hammock, and get away from the world.

  • Amy's place is great--quiet, spacious, light-filled. Amy and her husband were very helpful with recommendations for things to do and places to eat, etc.

  • Amy’s place is really special, it was the perfect place for us to get away from the world, cook, read, write and go for afternoon dips in the cove. I can’t recommend it highly enough if you feel like getting away from it all! It’s a bohemian dream and was very inspiring!

  • We stayed here for our 31st Anniversary. Very quiet and relaxing! This studio has lovely post and beam construction and wonderful light. The location is quiet with some ocean view from the kitchen and bedroom loft. The bed was very comfortable and there were lots of great books and CD's for our use. Thomas was there to greet us and show us around. He gave us some great tips about the island and was very nice and personable. His hospitality made our anniversary more special. Thank you!!

    Shirley2019-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • Amy and Thomas's place is a very special spot. The landscape and water are gorgeous. The barn is light filled, airy and beautifully built. The kitchen has a great window facing the sea and is appointed with many interesting and useful cooking and baking tools- for making either casual or gregarious meals. The tub and bathroom are charming, also with a window. Thank you Amy and Thomas we had a lovely time on Vinalhaven. Miss it!

Quiet at night, and so restful and comfortable. The studio was just as described, and sparkling clean. • A perfect and charming old house in a great setting. Very comfortable, clean, and adorable. I absolutely loved this place and can’t wait to go back! If you’re looking for a relaxing and cozy place to enjoy Vinalhaven, this house couldn’t be better or more pleasant. Five minute drive to town, super close to a great quarry, and very, very quiet!

  • We had a wonderful stay on Vinalhaven. The house is so charming and wonderfully located and very nice, especially for a small family to stay. The long laundry outside line is very useful and having the washing machine is helpful (as well as wifi and a house phone!). And the huge lawn is delightful to sit or for kids to play- plenty of lawn to toss a ball. It is true that it’s an old house so there’s the charm of a old house and the steep staircase is true. Be careful going down the top small steps- simple enough to hold on to the solid bannister. The kitchen is well maintained so you can easily cook a meal with plenty of room to cook and then sit and eat. We would definitely stay here again and saw some amazing stars at night. The garden is lovely and feels very nice walking up to the house. Mosquitos in the country are a given, so use your bug spray. Rachel is very responsive and helpful even when I had a few questions during our stay. It’s a lovely country house to enjoy on Vinalhaven.

    Caitlin2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Highly recommend this amazing house and its location! Be prepared for lots of birds singing and talking!

  • Rachel’s house is magical and lovely. It’s private yet conveniently located. The house is beautifully and lovingly maintained. Check in was easy and Rachel provides a thoughtful binder with all the information about the house and the island. Morning swims in the nearby quarry were followed by showers outside. It will be hard to adjust to real life after our stay. We are so grateful for such an amazing week. We’re already thinking about next year!

    Walter2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Our family had a wonderful week long stay at Rachel's lovely home. Great proximity to Booth's quarry which is our preferred quarry on VH. Girls had bikes and could easily bike to town and other locations including our relative's home. Great cottage/maine feel to the place, very peaceful, well appointed and beautiful setting.

    Amy2019-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • Rachel and her house on Vinalhaven are wonderful. We have stayed there before and LOVED everything about it. Unfortunately, this trip was cut short- as the septic system at her place gave out the day after we arrived. Turns out that plumbing on the island can be rather temperamental early in the season- after the houses have been shut down all winter. However- Rachel responded quickly, refunding our money so that we could find another house to stay in for the remainder of our trip to the island. She is a gracious host and a her home (when plumbing is good) is wonderful!

    Sarah2019-06-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time at Rachel's place Such a wonderful Maine experience. Incredible place to watch the stars. The house was adorable. Loved sitting in the living room and reading. She also provided wonderful books to peruse. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Thank you!

    Maureen2018-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Rachel’s place is just as described and very well located for quarry swimming. Not waterfront, but about 1.5 miles from public ocean access and SUPER close to a fabulous fresh water quarry for swimming. Booth’s was our favorite part of the trip! Also biking into the sweet and friendly little town

  • We visited the island for a weekend wedding and had a wonderful stay at the apartment. It was perfect - clean and comfortable. The location was fantastic. We walked to and from the ferry terminal to the apartment. It’s also a short walk into town. Check in and out was easy. And had everything you could need for a get away.

  • This quiet, cozy place is fully equipped with comfortable beds and a kitchen that is thoughtfully stocked. It is next to the library and a short walk to Main Street. The owners provide a notebook chock full of local information about the island which we found very helpful. It is an ideal place to stay on Vinalhaven. We hope to return!

  • Amazing place ! We loved the eclectic styling and pretty bright colors throughout the house. Everything was clean and neat and there were plenty of Linens and supplies for our long weekend. There's plenty of room to lounge about and the centralized location is unbeatable. As usual, the value is also amazing!

  • Our sixth year in a row - this is one of our very favorite places on earth, and Craig and Amy are fantastic hosts. Incredible location - walking distance to town, harbor, and swimming quarry. Wonderful space - clean, quiet, and cozy. And the island is magnificent.

  • Great little spot very close to the main street area (short walk), but on a small side street so it's quieter. Great yard with a big picnic table and a gas firepit. The house was super clean and we found everything we could need in the kitchen. Many thanks!!

  • This is a really lovely place. It is secluded and beautiful, with a wooded path to the dock. We rented a kayak and enjoyed paddling from the dock. The house feels airy and bright--and is not musty like many in this climate. There were comfortable spaces to sit and a desk to write at. The kitchen was well appointed--all the pots and utensils that we needed. The house had not been cleaned well, but Claire responded quickly to try to address that. The views were spectacular. Overall we had a great week-- and we would be happy to return.

This is the house our grandfather built for our grandmother Margaret. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
This was our grandparents island home, it's not fancy but will provide you with the essentials and a great location. You can see a peek of the ocean from the kitchen and living room and hear the ferry coming in when it blows! Deck to enjoy the sunshine and ocean breeze.
Island in Penobscot bay, 1 hour and 15 minutes by ferry. Great location, only a 5 minute walk from the ferry terminal and a 15 minute walk downtown. Plenty to do! Take a picnic to Lane's Island, swim at the quarries or go downtown to shop and grab a bite to eat.
  • Great house so close to the ferry and the downtown area. Has all the amenities needed and super clean! Great communication from the renter. I missed having WiFi and there’s no cell signal but after a day of withdrawals it was quite refreshing. :-) Highly recommend this property!

    Dave2019-07-29T00:00:00Z
  • Very clean, good location you can walk from ferry and bike to quarry. Like stepping back in time with every kitchen tool imaginable from a lettuce spinner to a classic old kitchen aid mixer. A simple place where normal families can enjoy some good time with each other. (no Internet and little cell service can be a gift and town is close enough if you really need to make a call. We definitely hope to return.

    Reneau2019-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • The house is cozy and convenient. Nicely located within walking distance to the ferry, and with a public park right across the street on Sands Cove. The house was well kept, clean and priced reasonably. It was nice to be able to have some quiet time without cell phone coverage and without internet access. We really appreciated the chance to stay there.

    Rob2018-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Great spot for a getaway. Just a five-minute walk from the ferry, and a five-minute bike ride into town. I appreciated the fact there was no internet or cell access in the house, but I could get it across the street if needed. (I remembered how to read books instead of just my phone!) The house was basic, but clean and well-kept, and bed was very comfortable. Shower could have been hotter. Overall, fantastic value in a lovely location.

    Michael2017-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • The house was clean and very comfortable. We especially loved the new beds.

    Lizzie2017-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret's house is a comfortable, old, home that is well-kept, well-stocked with sheets, towels, extra pillows, and games galore, and sparkling clean! Appliances were either new or in terrific working condition. Amy and her mom were very responsive and helpful. The house is a five minute from the ferry dock, and across the street is a sailing school and national land trust where you can sit and watch the harbor (and at some times, the kids having their sailing lessons), have a picnic, or bring a glass of wine and your book to read. Sounds of the ferries and the lobster boats are part of the background all over the island, so don't expect pristine silence; but the house is far enough away from town and neighbors that it doesn't ever get any noisier than the background engines running. Be prepared, if you haven't been to the island before -- there's little cell service and no internet at the house. But that turned out to add to our vacation!!!

    Diane2017-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • The communication was fantastic! Amy had advice and information about everything including the ferry. The place was clean and everything we were looking for. Nice quick walk to the ferry and not far from the downtown area. Great island spot!

    Shannon2017-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • We needed a nice place to stay for a little vacation! The house was a great size for 4 people, with lots of room and a great porch for eating meals outside. The location was perfect - a quick walk to town! Amy kept in touch and was super helpful, which was good to know - just in case we needed anything.

  • Highly recommend. Location, location, location: ocean views, proximity to shoreline, and a good dock. The large screened-in porch makes the most of the location, offering an airy refuge from sun and bugs. Our group of six adults and three kids loved our stay. It does live up to the pictures (plan to bring your own boats, one option is to rent from Maine Sport). The level of supplies -- paper towels, soap, etc. -- was above average, and we appreciated the labels in the kitchen, which was missing a microwave but otherwise well equipped. We hope for a wifi upgrade by next year, especially since there's no cell reception. Claire was very responsive to questions, and was proactive and informative for meeting us on our arrival.

    Molly2019-07-25T00:00:00Z
  • GORGEOUS location. Cabin is simple and cozy, nicely decorated. Peaceful and secluded. My boyfriend and I brought our scooters over on the ferry and had a blast exploring the island that way and it felt like an adventure on the long dirt road getting out to the house. Do not expect to do any cooking as there is only a fridge and a microwave. Hosts were very hospitable and allowed us to use toaster in their house to make bagels in the morning and even had us over for a glass of wine in afternoon along with some lovely conversation. Also gave us a bit of gasoline for our scooters at one point as the only island station was closed. It is kind of like a compound and deck area is a shared space and is not directly behind the cabin. Be sure to request detailed directions before getting to the island as it can be tricky to find and service is real spotty, but worth it when you get there!

    Shauna2018-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely cottage set on a beautiful piece of property. The cove that it is on is gorgeous, with fine granite rocks that you can walk over. It would be a perfect place to kayak. The small cottage is very comfortable, clean and with charming decorations and perfect club chairs to sit on while enjoying the view. Also lot of good books to read! Not a lot of cooking space or equipment, but that was not a problem for us...

    Nicola2018-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I were looking for a quiet place to get away after our wedding. This very nice cabin is in a quiet spot on an already quiet island. Great swimming, friendly locals, and beautiful views of the water front. We would have been able to do more cooking if we brought more kitchen equipment, like basic pots, pans, ect. Don't attempt the dirt road to the cabin with a low clearance car, our Subaru Crosstrek was a smart choice. The cabin itself is very clean, with lots of natural sunlight. I would recommend this place to a couple who wants to put away their screen devices and enjoy costal Maine.

    Alexander2018-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had an amazing time in this little private cottage. Vinalhaven is a wonderful place to spend a few relaxing days in nature. Hosts were the best we could have imagined and the cottage was way beyond expectations. The view from the cottage is amazing at all times and the sunsets a must-see. This is all we could have hoped for and will definitely be coming back to visit.

    Julie2014-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I and two year old daughter stayed at the cabin for three nights. The cabin and grounds were beautiful, with incredible views from the cabin and throughout the property. When we arrived, it seemed that the hosts had thought of everything to make our trip as enjoyable as possible. Throughout the stay, they treated us like family, including taking my wife to yoga class and giving us a tour on their motor boat. The cabin was clean, comfortable, and well appointed. We wish that we could have stayed longer, and we were sad to leave. If you are considering vacationing on the island, this is a wonderful place to stay.

    Gabriel2014-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • My stay couldn’t have been better. My hosts, Jane and Ray, were warm, gracious, friendly and very helpful. The cottage is beautiful, comfortable and full of charm - and includes a wonderful deck, hammock and use of a kayak and much more. It overlooks a beautiful part of the Vinalhaven shoreline and is delightfully quiet at night and full of stars. I wish I were still there. I recommend their cottage wholeheartedly.

Located off of Crockett's River Road. Very private.
  • Crockett's Farm is a unique and extremely private getaway that is home to the most splendid sunsets on the island. The dock quickly became a favorite place to read and relax. The deck is also a wonderful place but did not have a table or adequate seating. It is a 20-minute drive from town. There is plenty of sleeping space, the kitchen is well-stocked after multiple generations of a family's accumulation (e.g. - there are 10 coffee pots.) The one shower in the house is in the master bedroom and is a bit cramped with a naked lightbulb hanging above. The second bathroom has a clawfoot bathtub with an attachable shower handle. We have suggested that tenants be allowed to use the outdoor shower. The house boasts lots of charm but would benefit immensely from updates and improvements so that the tenants can enjoy the natural beauty of the property.

  • Amazing! This homes was the most beautiful and scenic location we’ve ever stayed in through AirBnB. You’ll be surrounded by natural beauty and be within feet of the ocean. This is the perfect place to hit the reset button. It doesn’t take some logistical coordinating to get there, but you’ll understand and appreciate why once you arrive.

  • Hannah’s place was just what we needed. The views from the porch are incredible and the house’s location is very private. The kitchen was stocked with all needed appliances and kitchen tools so that we could make a few nice meals during our stay. Hannah was also an excellent communicator. If you like the wilderness, the ocean, and privacy, you can’t beat Hannah’s spot.

  • This cottage is in a gorgeous setting -- completely private, with a lovely view of a beautiful cove. You will enjoy watching the changing of the tides, the wading birds at low tide, and classic Maine scenery. It is down a rugged country road, but if you take it slow, you are rewarded with a perfect location for enjoying the island. There are two refrigerators with ample room for storing several days' worth of food, but you might want to bring a bag of ice for your cooler as there isn't a freezer. The cottage is very clean, comfy beds, and well equipped with dishes and cooking utensils. A large dining table is placed in front of a huge picture window, so you can appreciate the cove and the granite rocks and pine trees while you eat. Vinalhaven is a lovely island with a relaxed pace, and beautiful water views around every corner. Artists and writers will find amazing inspiration in the natural beauty of the place, and the charming homes and gardens are delightful. The ferry to and from the island is well-run and a short pleasant trip. This is an interesting part of Maine, and we enjoyed our stay.

  • We had a wonderful time at Hannah’s cottage for my grandmothers birthday. The deck is fabulous, the view and cove are impeccable. Definitely recommend staying here.

  • This house is wonderful and really clean. Honestly, the picture don’t do justice to the real thing. If you are looking for a relaxing trip to Vinalhaven, this is your space! It is located in a secluded and very beautiful part of the island, but also a short drive to Main Street. In addition, Hannah is super responsive. I hope to stay here again and again! Thank you, Hannah!
