It boasts a lovely town in walking distance, with heaps of shops, cafes, art and craft, and restaurants, two supermarkets, but with fast food also available. There are walking/biking trails along the Tukituki River, beaches close by to the east- Kairakau down to Porangahau. Wine tasting, golf, fishing in the rivers. Also a good stop/over point when travelling from Wellington or Taupo etc.
