Your guide to Wroxham

All About Wroxham

On the banks of the River Bure just 20 minutes’ drive from Norwich sits the town of Wroxham — the gateway to the protected wetlands of the Norfolk Broads, boasting more than 200 kilometres of waterways surrounded by woodland and meadows. Wroxham has plenty of shops to browse, including one of the world’s largest village stores, trading since 1895. You’ll also find cafes and restaurants with waterside views, tea rooms, and traditional pubs.

The Norfolk Broads feature meandering rivers and tranquil lakes (broads) and dykes, creating a paradise for boating, sailing, kayaking, and canoeing. You’ll spot an abundance of wildlife, including kingfishers, otters, water voles, and bitterns — one of the rarest breeding bird species in the UK. But it’s not all about water here: You can explore the Broads via 300 kilometres of footpaths and nature trails for all ages and abilities, including the 14-kilometre Bure Valley Path, which starts in Wroxham, and the epic 96-kilometre Weavers’ Way trail that follows the Norfolk coast from Cromer to Great Yarmouth.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Wroxham

Wroxham is a year-round destination, with many cottages to choose from for your stay. In summer, you can expect sunny days, so you’ll want to pack a hat and sunscreen for exploring the Broads. In July, the Wymondham Music Festival showcases Norfolk musicians alongside national and international artists. Spring and autumn are mostly mild, but as in most of the UK, the weather can be changeable, so it’s a good idea to bring layers. In October, the annual Pumpkin Festival takes place in town with fun farm-related activities, rides, and games. Winter visits mean colder temperatures and the likelihood of rain, so remember to pack a warm layer or two. It’s also a magical time when the town sparkles with Christmas lights and decorations.

Top things to do in Wroxham

The Bure Valley Railway

Enjoy a relaxing ride aboard a heritage steam train on the historic Bure Valley Railway, Norfolk’s longest narrow-gauge railway. The nine-mile journey follows the winding River Bure to the market town of Aylsham, passing through the villages of Brampton, Buxton, and Coltishall. In December, you can ride the Festive Express train, which features mince pies and a visit from Santa. You can cycle the route alongside the railway or follow it on foot.

The Broads by Boat

Hiring a boat in town enables you to explore the waterways at your own pace. Wroxham is a hub for many boat rentals. You’ll set off from the River Bure and travel into the vast expanse of the spectacular Wroxham Broad. There are many stunning spots on the Broads that are only reachable by boat; moor up when you spot a riverside pub or restaurant to enjoy some lunch.

Wroxham Miniature Worlds

Kids of all ages can enjoy wandering among the tiny dioramas and train tracks at this scaled-down indoor attraction, which covers more than 930 square metres. Watch miniature trains chugging through model cities around the world; ooh over vintage dolls, retro toys, and model boats; and try your hand in the retro penny arcade or on the interactive flight and train simulators. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you can enjoy lunch in the cafe; there’s also a gift shop where you can buy a suitably miniature souvenir.
