Craigiehall Temple (historic property built 1759)

Make you trip to Edinburgh truly memorable with a stay at Craigiehall Temple. Built in 1759 and situated in its own grounds on a former part of the Craigiehall Estate, it's Grade A listed for its stunning portico displaying the arms of the 1st Marquess of Annandale. A plaque on the wall carries a quote from Horace: "Dum Iicet in rebus jucundis vive beatus", "Live happy while you can among joyful things". We hope that a stay at the Temple will deliver this experience and stay true to this vision.

All about Elie

Elie is a quiet seaside village on the Fife coast, known for its 16th-century harbour and stunning sandy beach. The sheltered bay offers calm, safe waters for swimming and a range of watersports, including sailing, windsurfing, and canoeing. Fife is renowned for having some of the best golf courses in the world. Elie has two award-winning courses, and just 20 minutes away, you can visit the links at St Andrews — the undisputed home of golf.

The village sits on the 116-mile Fife Coastal Path, which passes ancient castles and traditional windmills on its way around the headland to Newburgh. You’ll find plenty of places to stop and take in the magnificent coastal views; if you’re lucky, you may even spot dolphins and seals.

What are the top things to do in Elie?

Elie Beach

This mile-long stretch of shoreline links Elie to the neighbouring village of Earlsferry. The beach boasts Blue Flag status for quality and safe swimming conditions. It’s also ideal for watersports, with equipment available to hire at the watersports centre next to the harbour. When the tide is out, you’ll often see locals holding cricket matches on the wide expanse of golden sand.

Secret Bunker

Just 10 minutes from the village, you’ll find the Secret Bunker — Scotland’s Underground Nuclear Command Centre. Kept secret from the public for decades, the complex is now open to explore and offers a fascinating insight into top-secret military life. You’ll head 30 metres underground through an entrance hidden on a seemingly ordinary farm. Inside, you’ll tour the command centre, plotting rooms, and broadcasting studio, and learn how the bunker played a vital role during the Cold War.

St Andrews

A 20-minute drive from Elie, the town of St Andrews is most famous for being the place where the game of golf originated. Right in the heart of town, you can stand at the first tee of a world-famous course and see right across the fairways, with magnificent views of the ocean. Take a wander around the town’s medieval cobbled streets, full of historic buildings, tearooms, and traditional pubs. You can also explore the ruins of the 13th-century St Andrews Castle, as well as the British Golf Museum.
