220-year-old Blue Merchant's Mansion with Seasonal Vegetable and Fruit Harvesting Experience

KAIWA NO SATO This old house is an indigo mansion built in the first year of the Bunsei era (1804) during the heyday of indigo. The main house and the sleeping area (a barn where indigo was stored) have been demolished due to aging, but the historic living room and garden have been preserved to allow guests to experience a little bit of that time, and it is used as a farmhouse inn. In the old days, "Indigofera" grew on the fertile land of the Yoshino River basin in Tokushima Prefecture, bringing great wealth to Tokushima Prefecture (Awa Province). Ancient documents on indigo, including cultural properties, are also available for viewing. A house in the middle of a forest. Enjoy mountain life in one of the few magnificent old houses built by Miyadaiku. At the house at the end of a fairytale forest road, you can BBQ, make a fire, boil a Goemon bath, and enjoy natural play that can only be experienced in the mountains. There are no street lights, and at night you can see the starry sky. Spending time feeling the mountain with all your senses, which can be seen in different ways depending on the season, reminds you of the rich, peaceful time that has been forgotten in modern times. Centered on a magnificent large pillar, it is an old house with earthen walls and built-in storage, but the first floor is covered with pure cedar boards, giving it a new feel. The water area features a newly built island kitchen and a large wash basin. The bath is a Goemon bath that uses both wood and gas, so you can cook with wood or use hot water. Outside the house, there is a friendly sign cat named Aosuke, who will come up to you if you are outside. It is located about 15 minutes by car from the Ishikari Mountain ropeway, making it easy to get to the mountains.

The owner, who knows the area well, will provide activities such as playing in the river, canoeing, hunting, and secret river play spots, so you can have a slightly different stay. Whether you're with your family, fishing, traveling alone, or staying overnight, we can accommodate a wide range of requests. If you want to enter the hot spring, we recommend "Cloud" which is a 3-minute drive, and we also provide discount coupons for bathing. There is a small river and a nice old house of Japanese style next to the house .The tool of the barbecue is prepared. （Please bring an ignition agent and charcoal） it's comfortable in summer as the temperature is a few degrees lower than in the city. As of 2024, mobile phones have become much easier to connect to. （no wi-fi） The air conditioner was installed in 2022, but it is only on the first floor.Enjoy the natural air. There is a fan. Firewood isn't available from May as it will be warmer.

For more active travelers, it's a good base to explore the area. We are 9 km from Shimanto City restaurants and shopping and an easy drive to activities on Shimanto River or the beach. We do require a 2-night minimum but highly encourage you to slow down and stay longer.

It’s located in a village called Karato Oka. You’ll find the Teshima Museum and rice terraces within a short walking.
