Your guide to Amble

All About Amble

Amble is a charming English harbour village nestled on the dramatic Northumberland coast, an area known for its spectacular scenery and landscapes, and protected as a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONM). Peaceful bays, vast stretches of beaches, and golden sand dunes serve as the backdrop to this coastal community.

The village is set on the banks of the River Coquet, and dozens of colourful boats bob in the deep blue waters of the Amble Marina. The marina is a popular gathering spot in town, brimming with restaurants and cafes. Award-winning ice cream and mouthwatering fish and chips are just a few popular treats found here. Amble Marina is also home to the Harbour Village, a hub for waterfront retail housed in charming wooden pods. A short stroll along the river from the marina will lead you to the medieval ruins of the magnificent Warkworth Castle.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Amble

The weather in Amble can be unpredictable, with some days seeing all four seasons within the span of hours. Winters see the lowest temperatures, while summer brings mild to warm weather, though it rarely gets to the point of feeling too hot. In fact, the area does not see much extreme weather of any kind, and rainfall typically remains about the same year-round. Being a seaside town, most of Amble’s local events take place in the spring and summer, and this is the best time to enjoy the area’s range of outdoor activities.

Amble hosts its Puffin Festival every year at the end of May, which is the best time to spot the Coquet Island puffins. This week-long event includes a beer festival, a music festival, lectures from wildlife experts, and activities for children. Visit in August for the Warkworth Show in the grounds of Warkworth Castle, featuring a variety of food options, live music, and activities for all ages.

Top things to do in Amble

Warkworth Castle

Towering above the River Coquet is Warkworth Castle. Originally built in the 12th century, much of what remains of the stone castle today is in ruins, though a few of its towers are still intact. You can meander among what is left of the castle’s chapel, Greek cross-shaped keep, and gatehouse for a glimpse into Amble’s past. Audio tours are included in the admission price, and provide insight into the history deeply embedded in the castle’s walls.

Coquet Island

Just off the coast of Amble lies Coquet Island, a thriving seabird sanctuary teeming with roseate terns, one of the United Kingdom’s rarest seabirds. The island is also home to breeding colonies of puffins and common, Sandwich, and Arctic terns. Though visitors are not allowed on the island, boat trips running from Amble Quayside provide an up-close view of the birds. On the western shores of Coquet Island, perched atop vibrant green pastureland, is the Coquet Island Lighthouse, built in 1841.

Amble Harbour Village

The picturesque Amble Harbour Village is a newer development that features a variety of retail pods resembling beach huts. There are around 15 wooden pods, each with its own theme, selling a wide range of goods including cheese, bread, coffee, art, crafts, jewellery, and accessories. The Seafood Centre offers locally caught sustainably fished seafood.
