Places to stay in Calumet Township

Places to stay in Calumet Township
Calumet Village is a historic district from the areas rich copper mining heritage. You are within the boundaries of Keweenaw National Park. The building your are staying in is well over a century old. Tin ceilings, plaster walls, and old woodwork have been preserved. The apartment building is within walking distance of museums, art galleries, restaurants, gift shops, pubs, the village park, and a laundry mat. Within a few blocks there is a grocery and a dollar store. MTU campus is 15 minutes.
The building you are in was originally offices above the first floor retail. Looking at the facade you can see this was originally two 2 story buildings. These were built in the 1880's. In 1905 the buildings were combined and a third floor was added.
The village is very walk-able. Museums and shops are all up and down Fifth Street. Fine dining and pizza places are within walking distance. Agassis Park is one block over on fourth street with tables, grills, horse shoe pits, and a basketball court. Many century old heritage sites are within the village limits. In the colder months the Swedetown trails and sled hill is not far a way. Mount Bohemia is further up the road toward Copper Harbor. For summer visitors there are many public parks, beaches, hiking, biking, and ORV trails, as well as many unique small towns each with their own special character and history.

  • This is apartment above a convenience store and is surprisingly very quiet, and is very clean and spacious. The kitchen is one of the best AirB&B we've experienced that is spacious, has new appliances, excellent provisions from pots & pans, condiments, spices, jams, etc.. It has a very large and comfortable living room. Excellent location in a historic mining town and in a great location to explore the Keweenaw Peninsula in the upper peninsular of Michigan. The hosts are very friendly and accommodating.

  • Don’t let the secret out, but this is the perfect home base location for a group snowmobile trip! Not far from the trail and more of a “home away from home” than your typical hotel in the UP. Plenty of room for a group of four looking to have their own space at the end of the day too. Great hosts - highly recommended!

    Jonathan2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • We rented here for a ski trip to Bohemia. The location/price was perfect. Just a short walk to the Drift Inn was a blast after a long day of skiing. The house was very clean and Rob made directions/communication easy. We would recommend staying here!

  • This private Airbnb is everything we could have hoped for. We were in town to ski at Mt. Bohemia and this is a short 30 minute drive from there. So it worked perfectly for us. We even got to enjoy the many cross country ski trails that are just a few minutes away from this house! As for the actual house, it was very clean and had everything we could have wanted. The kitchen in particular had everything that we needed and more to cook meals during our trip. Bathroom is stocked with towels, soap, shampoo, and even has a hair dryer! We also appreciated the games and puzzles in the living room. Many great little touches. It really shows that Laura cares about making sure her guests have a nice stay!

  • An extra cozy place to retreat to after a Winter cross country ski race ~ your own "wood stove style" gas heater provides an even and instant heat. So relaxing to watch the flickering flames and crackling sounds as well!

    Nancy2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • We needed a place to stay at the last minute (with our dog) and Adam responded immediately that we could stay with him. Our arrival time was very late at night but Adam still greeted us in person and had lights left on for us. Enjoy a peaceful stay on Rice Lake, in the amazing Keweenaw Peninsula. Our cozy cabin sits on the shore of Rice Lake, and is the perfect getaway for a couple or small family. The cabin has everything you'll need to enjoy a relaxing weekend, week, or longer. Fish for Northern and Walleye from the dock or our canoe. Enjoy breathtaking views and lots of wildlife. Only 25 minutes from downtown Houghton and Hancock, 15 minutes from historic Calumet, and less than an hour from Mount Bohemia.
The cabin has a wood fired sauna building, plenty of parking, a wood stove for back-up heat on chilly nights, a private sandy beach, Wifi, Cable TV, and lots of firewood. Visiting the Keweenaw Peninsula for the Fall colors is a life-changing experience!
There are only a handful of seasonal cabins and year-round homes on Rice Lake. Our cabin is a very private lakeshore property that is accessed from a long winding driveway. Restaurants, groceries, gas, and ice cream shops are 7 miles away in Lake Linden. The cabin is an easy drive to any place on the Keweenaw including Mount Bohemia, historic Calumet and Calumet Theater, Quincy Mine, and scenic Copper Harbor.

Torch Lake Township, MI, United States

Located on quiet dead-end street at the edge of the woods, with a view of Torch Lake. Comfortable, cheerful and private, it’s about a 15-min. drive across the Portage lift bridge to Michigan Tech. Pet-friendly with safe dog walking options. All are welcome!
Built in 1898 by the mining company, this salt box-style home originally had an outhouse where the birch is growing now. When a toilet was added, it was put in the basement because people couldn't imagine a toilet inside! Updated and remodeled in 2006,the plumbing and wiring were all replaced. It's got its original maple wood floors and sits on a Jacobsville sandstone foundation.
Tamarack City is between Houghton/Hancock and Calumet along M-26. Our neighborhood is an old mining location above the ruins of a copper processing mill. The mining company bought some of the homes from the Atlas Powder company in Dollar Bay and floated them across Torch Lake for use by its workers. They are all sided now, but underneath are the old logs used to build them. In the summer you can sit on the back deck and listen for the sand hill cranes who nest along Torch Lake. Our neighbor's bird feeder is visited by all the gold finches this side of the bridge. Enjoy the fall colors at the edge of the woods, and in the winter snow shoe up behind the house. Other than the robins singing in the morning in the summer and the chains of the snow plow rattling by late morning in the winter, the neighborhood is really quiet - you'll get a good night's sleep!
  • This a wonderful place to stay. It’s a quieter neighborhood on the outskirts of Houghton/Hancock.

  • Cute place. Clean and very comfortable!

    Matthew2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Jane's place is fully loaded with all the amenities one needs for a weekend stay. A short distance away from Tech with a lovely view of the lake. Dog friendly is a great plus. We stay every time we are in Houghton, and will stay again.

    Annie2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Super cute yet spacious little house, perfect for visiting our son at Tech without staying amid the chaos of Houghton/Hancock for Winter Carnival. Extra touches include Wifi, Bluetooth speakers, games, coffee and plenty of hot water. Excellent hosts made it easy and pleasant to book and stay. We all loved this place!

    Carol2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Although I didn't interact with Jane in person, she was very attentive and nice via messaging. The house was great, and it was very close to Houghton's shops and restaurants, as well as a couple hole-in-the-wall bars and shops. No complaints!

Quiet attic space with bedroom and private living room/office area- like a tiny apartment- in a historic home with original details. Use the sauna after skiing at Bohemia all day, have a beer at Keweenaw Brewing Company, and easily visit your friends at Michigan Tech! **COVID-19 precautions: Because we have a large college, a VA clinic, and a regional hospital in the area, I have decided to remain open while taking some precautions. Details are elsewhere in this listing.**
COVID-19 precautions: Because we have a large college, a VA clinic, and a regional hospital in the area, I have decided to remain open while taking some precautions: -There are no shared spaces for this listing. In the past, this listing offered access to my kitchen and living room, but I have suspended that for now. -I am using a four day buffer between guests -All linens are bleached, not just laundered -All surfaces will be wiped down with paper towels and a spray cleaner that effective against viruses (a towel and cleaning spray in the room for the use of guests, should they want to wipe down any surface) -I am supplying large garbage bags and asking all guests to bag their bed linens and towels for me when they leave. (Thanks for your cooperation.)
The neighborhood is in the "sweet spot"- a 5-min walk from Michigan Tech, 5-min the other way to a local cafe, less than a minute to the local grocery store! We're a 10 minute walk to our beautiful downtown, with local breweries, shops, and restaurants. You can see the local ski hill from my driveway! A 10 minute drive to Mount Bohemia and the Houghton Airport.
  • Great little spot. Lots of light in the bedroom and sitting area. Very close to downtown and lakeshore. We didn’t use the fireplace in the back but it looks lovely!

The place is very warm and cozy, plenty of space for 4 guys. Centrally locates allows for easy trail rides to copper harbor to the north or about a 200 mile round trip to Lake Gogebic and back on the south range trail system. We will be coming back next year if weather conditions are right!

Welcome to our home away from home! You'll enjoy a three bedroom home that has been recently redone to give you a modern experience woven with the old time feel of the UP. You will be 10 miles from Houghton/Hancock and Michigan Tech but just three blocks from endless miles of trails for snowmobiles and atvs. There is also wifi, a smart TV, Netflix, your controlled heat, and a two car garage available. We welcome you!
As we mentioned the modern kitchen is a bright spot as the rest of the house has the old time style of wood floors along with original wood trim throughout the house. There is an unheated attic upstairs if you need extra room to move around as well.
There is a small downtown with a few restaurants and a few small stores. Luckily there is a grocery store just a couple of blocks away!

This fantastic little 1 bedroom cottage is perfect for Lake Superior getaways. Our location is about 3.5 miles from downtown historic Calumet - yet still quiet and nestled in the forest lined beach. We are conveniently located near all area attractions; Copper Harbor, Mt. Bohemia, Swedetown, and Houghton/Hancock. Sleeps 4 comfortably. Additional sofa sleeper in living room.
Our location is just about as central as you can get while still remaining secluded and nestled into the woods of the Lake Superior shore. Our location is a very private and zero cross traffic as the road to the cottage stops here. There are only four other neighboring cottages (all part of North Shore Cottages) for miles, unlike most locations along the shore with private neighbors by the dozens and just feet from major roads and highways. You are sure to fall in love with the vast undeveloped and forested shoreline surrounding our location. The cottage has 2 double beds and a sofa-sleeper in the living room. The bathroom has a full bath/shower. High speed Wi-Fi and smart TV. Our location is very clean, and well maintained by our professional housekeeping staff. Our linens are provided weekly by Aramark Linen Service.

  • If there was a rating higher than “great” that’s what I would put. Jocelyn (Joy) was an amazing host and made amazing breakfast for us every morning!!! She was kind, warm, and very welcoming. I feel like I’ve known her for years and we only spent 3 nights together! My boyfriend and I stayed here for our trip to snowboard at mount Bohemia. If you’re looking for a place to stay in the area I’d highly recommend staying with Jocelyn.

    Erica2020-03-01T00:00:00Z

    Paulette2019-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay with Joy and her husband Victor! I really can’t say enough wonderful things about them. We stayed with them before our ferry to Isle Royale and after we returned to the mainland. They were super flexible since the ferry can be unpredictable due to water conditions. This was greatly appreciated as we got stuck on the island for an extra day. Also, Joy packed us a lunch for our ride to the island! She’s an amazing chef. Both Joy and Victor are so friendly and hospitable. We enjoyed taking with them in the morning before our drive home. The house is adorably decorated and spotless. Really great location if you want to go anywhere in the Keweenaw Peninsula. We would absolutely come back to spend more time! One of the best Air BnB experiences we have had!

  • Danise's place is perfect! It's super clean and in a great location if you enjoy cross country skiing at Swedetown. Danise knows the area well and suggested a couple of 'must visits' while we stayed in Calumet. We will be back!

  • The place was very clean and comfortable. Danise was very helpful and always there to assist if needed.

  • JoLynn's place worked out perfectly for me, my husband and son to say while in town for our youngest sons MTU commencements. We stayed in cabin #2 for 4 nights. I am very picky about places I stay so was relieved to see how clean and cozy the place was. It also has all the amenities you would need. JoLynn was timely with the information required for check in and check out and quickly available for any questions we may have. I would definitely recommend this cabin.

Quaint 1880s cottage located on 5 acres on top of Bumbletown hill, Keweenaw County with a panoramic view of the Huron Mountains and Lake Superior. Available June through mid-October. Nearby activities: hiking, fishing, swimming, biking, birding and nature trails, rock/agate picking, photography, wild flowers, mushroom, and berry picking, light house tours, nature preserves and parks, boating and much more...all within a very short scenic drive.
Brockway Mountain (site for hawk migration study), Isle Royale National Park, Seamans Mineral Museum, Keweenaw National Historic Park - Copper has shaped the people and places on the Keweenaw Peninsula for thousands of years. In the 1840s, the first mineral mining rush in the US took place here. Although the mines have since closed, the history lives on. We also offer guided occaisional nature tours for birding, plants, mushrooms, and berries.
The house is located in the small quiet village of Bumbletown (only 48 people) in Keweenaw County, MI.
  • Sparkling clean and very cozy. We felt right at home there. It was more like visiting relatives than staying in a strange house. A beautiful location that is convenient to your needs and still peaceful and private.

    Phillip2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely home-- very comfortable and attractive. Great central location for exploring the Keweenaw Peninsula. Sandra gifted us with a jar of thimbleberry jam, which she had picked and made herself. We enjoyed this personal touch. Plus she told us of some hiking places mostly only known to locals and we enjoyed going there. We would definitely stay here again!

    Diane2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • This is like your own home except maybe nicer. There are all the amenities that you have in your own home including fully stocked cupboards with excellent quality cookware, lots of utensils, high end appliances, including a KitchenAid Mixer and food processor, a nice, 6 burner gas stove with a convection oven, an extensive spice drawer, AND a French press coffee maker complete with whole coffee beans and a grinder. The home is furnished with high quality furniture, antiques, a lovely hardwood floor, and beautiful, original artwork. There are hundreds of books from multiple genres. There is a nice deck on the back with quality patio furniture. My favorite aspect of the home was the artistic use of colors. It all blends well. Some rooms are restful, while others are more invigorating. There are pops of accent colors throughout that make it appealing. We were able to use this location as a starting point to travel throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula with ease. There are numerous beaches, hiking opportunities, and a great star-gazing (dark sky) areas. There is a high granite hill behind the house that makes for beautiful sunrises and sunset photography.

    Scot2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • Sandra’s house is charming and comfortable, and she was a responsive host. The location was a great base for exploring the Keweenaw. We would stay there again when we’re in the area.

  • Just spent a week at Sandra's place! We really enjoyed ourselves and everything was more than we expected. Super clean and tidy, tons of amenities for cooking and for relaxing! We loved the location and really enjoyed the peace and quiet after a day spent adventuring! Sandra provided great info and tips on places to see, explore, and eat! Best vacation in some time! We would definitely stay there again and recommend it to others!

If you're looking for a lakeshore getaway with quiet surroundings, 200 feet of private beach for walking , relaxing or rock picking and gorgeous sunsets, JPs might be the place for you. The loft has a double bed with a shower , toilet etc. Because it is accessed via the spiral staircase it may not be appropriate for small children. There are 2 bedrooms on the main floor with a full bath.
Open concept chalet style home. 3 bedrooms. 2 baths. Deck overlooking Lake Superior .
I love nature and the quiet surroundings of JPs retreat. You can enjoy a lazy day of reading, napping in the hammock, listening to the waves, the woodpeckers, the loons or walking the beach looking for agates. The deck overlooking the beach is a great location for viewing the amazing sunsets or, on occasion, the northern lights. The best ever drinking water comes from the overflow from the artisan well. Shopping, restaurants and the historic Calumet Theatre are only 5 miles away. McLain State Park is 4 miles away with many hiking trails .
  • What a great UP getaway, if you would like to unplug from the rest of the world this is the place! Beautiful sunsets and lots of nature.

  • We had a wonderful time at Jill's place. She is a great host. We had everything that would be needed to stay there for the week. The place is spotless, well thought out, great location, great beach, nice linens, well stocked. We did not mind not having phone services or internet. We are from Canada and the Canadian phones got ATT Services, just texting though. When we needed service, we just went six minutes into Calumet to the Coffee shop. Jill's place is quiet and peaceful. I walked an hour each day up the road, we swam everyday in Lake Superior, and could not have asked for anything more there. Jill is a delight to talk with and anything we needed she took care of immediately and well as the communication is excellent. Thanks Jill for a wonderful week. Our kids were at the Michigan Tech Summer Youth Programs and we will be back next year.

    Cindy2019-07-20T00:00:00Z

  • Wonderful gem on the shore! The pictures don't do it justice. We enjoyed bonfires, the hammocks, and walking the beach every day. There are some beautiful trails not far that we walked to, and more within driving distance. We didn't have cell reception, so Jill stopped by our 2nd day there to make sure we had everything we needed. We loved it!

  • Clean rooms; Host is accessible and responsive. 2nd time renting this airbandb and will likely rent again in future.

This apartment also works well for professionals on rotational work schedules.
Built in 1903, the 507 Oak apartments have been restored with period light fixtures and other features. They are well within walking distance to restaurants, pubs, and multiple art galleries as well as the headquarters of the Keweenaw National Historical Park.

  • We had as perfect a stay as you can hope for, with a warm welcome and a beautiful apartment right above the ski and bike shop—handy! There is a good kitchen, great coffee, a futon couch, and the bed is very comfortable (with awesome sheets I might add) with plenty of space in dressers and a closet. We highly recommend staying here! Ruth

The hosts run a nordic ski and bike store in ground floor in the same building. Hosts are very service minded and provided any help or advice we could benefit of. We spent about a week and had a wonderful time.
