All about Sedbergh
Situated in the Lake District in Cumbria within the boundaries of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the small town of Sedbergh is fittingly called one of England’s Booktowns thanks to its extensive collection of independent and secondhand bookshops. You’ll be struck by the beauty of its rolling green landscape, punctuated by the famous Howgill Fells, and the sound of the tranquil River Rawthey — a captivating setting for any adventure story.
Sedbergh made a name for itself in the 13th century as a trading and market hub, but before that it was widely used by the Saxons, Vikings, and Normans due to its position at the confluence of four rivers. As a result, the town’s architecture is as diverse as its history. Featuring a 12th-century Norman church, the 1525-built Sedbergh School, and the Quaker Meeting House at Brigflatts constructed in 1675, you can easily get lost in another time while walking the streets. Today, Sedbergh thrives as a marketplace and a centre for outdoor recreation, whether you’re looking for fine wool textiles, secondhand books, or an adrenalin rush on a mountain bike or kayak.
What are the top things to do in Sedbergh?
St Andrew’s Church
Built in 1130, St Andrew’s Church is Sedbergh’s oldest building. This active Anglican parish church is Grade I listed. Its handcarved stonework and exposed wood construction hark back to medieval times, while its stained glass, 19th-century organ, and eight-bell tower are artistic marvels.
Fairfield Mill
Once the epicentre of Sedbergh’s textile production industry, the Fairfield Mill has been open since 1837. While it was a working mill for more than 150 years, it is now a testament to Sedbergh’s heritage, with exhibits showcasing its history and workshops where you can learn to weave. In addition to being a historically significant Victorian woollen mill, the building is home to dozens of local artisans selling traditional and contemporary arts and crafts.
Hiking the Howgill Fells
This area was made famous by a renowned English fellwalking author who wrote a book about the Howgill Fells, which are part of Yorkshire Dales National Park and a 20-minute bike ride north of Sedbergh. Rising 676 metres above sea level at their peak, the Howgill Fells can be hiked in a day with no special equipment required. While you’re here, stop by the Cautley Spout to see England’s highest waterfall, whose cascade falls almost 200 metres. According to the author, the Fells resemble a group of reclining elephants.
