Your guide to Woodhall Spa
All About Woodhall Spa
Located on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds of England, Woodhall Spa is a bucolic beauty and part of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust that manages the area’s 99 nature reserves. The village name dates back to the 19th century, when it was a destination for its mineral springs. Today, the town offers an array of outdoor activities that include hiking on farm trails, cycling on paths strewn with autumn leaves and grazing deer, and riding horses over pea-green summer wolds. When you work up an appetite, you can pop into a Tudor pub. The Lincolnshire dining scene is often praised for its traditional and modern mix of British and global cuisines.
Within a 40-minute drive of Woodhall Spa, you’ll find Chapel Point Beach lined with pink, blue, yellow, and orange huts popular since the turn of the 20th century. The North Sea Observatory resides on its coast with an art gallery, cafe, and outlooks of the sea, dunes, and birdlife.
Ride across Lincolnshire, home of one of England’s most famous poets while listening to an audible book collection of poems that celebrate this gorgeous area. Golfers will be in paradise here too, as Woodhall Spa features two golf courses — and the original Hotchkin course from 1905 is a popular destination for lovers of the sport.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Woodhall Spa
Warm summer weather lasts from June to September here. Stay in a Woodhall Spa log cabins during this time to enjoy outdoor activities like croquet or cricket in Jubilee Park, near the city centre. Woodhall Spa Cottage Museum hosts Music In the Garden, featuring diverse genres, on Sunday afternoons in August and September. Fall and spring are mild and still great times for visiting historic sites. The temperatures are cool November through March, with January being the coldest month. The highlight of winter is the Woodhall Spa Christmas Fayre. The Christmas Grotto features Santa and his elves, and there are street entertainers, gift stalls, and a parade from St. Peter’s Church led by the Town Crier to the Carol Service in Royal Square.
Top things to do in Woodhall Spa
Lincoln
A 30-minute drive away is Lincoln Castle and Cathedral, once the tallest building in the world. Commissioned by William the Conqueror, the Gothic masterpiece houses a copy of the Magna Carter signed by King John. It survived fire and earthquake and, in the 20th century, was a movie set to a blockbuster film. Also in Lincoln is Tattershall Castle, built by the Lord High Treasurer of Queen Elizabeth I’s court. The five-story tower was built in bricks, the first domestic structure of its kind. You can also visit the Burghley House, considered one of the finest surviving homes of the 16th century.
Louth
Louth is also 30 minutes away. Here you can roam the rolling countryside with a camera and snap a photo of St James’ Church, a medieval parish with one of the tallest spires in the country. When you explore the market town, you’ll find fresh prawn, haddock, and smoked salmon. Lincolnshire menus tend to be vegetarian friendly, and Italian, Moroccan, and Mediterranean dishes are also available.
Kinema in the Woods
Film lovers can experience the Kinema in the Woods, a theatre built in 1922 and the last remaining cinema in the country that uses a rear screen projector. It’s less than a 10 minute walk from the town centre, and an organ player entertains during movie intervals.
