Lodge in Smarden with Sauna (2-8 pep)

ChristelRating, 5 stars2 days ago
Had a wonderful week. The house is an oasis of peace from where we have effortlessly been able to do and see all the cool things. A day of London, castle in Leeds (worth it!), a day of Canterbury, a day of Hastings, and more. Wonderful! And when you get home; nice beds, nice bathroom, space training opportunities and lots of games. We had a top brand!

Sleeps up to 12, Large cottage with stunning views

AshviniRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago
We had an amazing hen party and stay at Maylea! The house is absolutely gorgeous, so comfortable, and perfect for hosting. We loved being able to use the garden and dining space in the conservatory. I'd recommend staying here, going to Hidden Spring vineyard, and brunch at Pink Cabbage Co to any other groups!

Huge Georgian Villa. Sea views. 10Adults plus kids

CharlotteRating, 5 stars1 week ago
The house is perfect for a weekend away with friends to catch up for a chilled weekend out of the city. There’s really nice local restaurants and wine bars in st Leonards within a 10 minute walk, and Hastings is a nice beachfront 45 min walk away. I’d recommend this house for anyone looking for a chilled weekend away with friends! One thing to note for anyone looking to hire this place (not a bad thing) - one of our party recently got engaged so we blew up some balloons for a champagne toast one night. We were a very chilled bunch and stayed out of the house most of the time, but the host did try and charge us £150 for the few deflated balloons we accidentally left in the downstairs bathroom. We did a thorough clean and stuck very closely to the rules of this property, but I would not recommend this house if you are wanting to have parties or spend lots of time in the house. I would only recommend if you are using the house as a place to chill together and explore the local area!

Charming Cottage in a peaceful and rural setting

GillRating, 5 stars4 months ago
Diana’s beautiful countryside cottage is nestled into the East Sussex countryside, providing a quiet and remote getaway, but within easy drive of shops and several lovely Sussex towns and villages. Beautiful walks in the area.. in the winter bring your waterproof boots and enjoy!! Great for a stay with family or friends, lots of lovely spaces in the house ( the photos don’t do it justice). We stayed between Christmas and new year, so we appreciated and enjoyed the abundance of coal for our daily evening fires, providing a warm and very cozy atmosphere. Very well equipped kitchen with enough space around the table for 6 or 7 people. All our needs were met. Well worth a stay, I would highly recommend this place and we will surely return! Gill

Perfect period property garden flat with own gate

KatieRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
This is a beautiful home from home, it felt like staying with friends. We visited at Easter and there were two chocolate rabbits waiting for the kids, which was a lovely touch. The kitchen, living area and main bedroom are spacious and this is a great area. Close to the beach, train station, bars and restaurants. A lovely stay and we’d go back again.

Your guide to East Sussex

Welcome to East Sussex

Dominated by the chalky hills of the South Downs, the landscape of East Sussex is one of gentle beauty, dotted with many villages and estates that can trace their histories back to the Domesday Book. In the north of the county spills the High Weald, known for its wooded hills and ancient farmland, while the 250 square miles of the Downs (now a national park) are covered in grassland and flowering heath that offer rambling walks and extensive views, some all the way to the English Channel.

It’s at the coast that drama can be found in East Sussex, from the 160-metre-tall cliff of Beachy Head to the rocky outcrops of the Seven Sisters and the Atlantic waves and winds that beat upon the shore. Seaside towns like Brighton, Eastbourne, and Bexhill combine Georgian elegance with an artsy culture, while Norman abbeys and a little town called Hastings hark back to one of the most famous battles in English history in 1066.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in East Sussex

This land’s natural beauty isn’t diminished by cold weather. East Sussex can be as captivating in the bleak midwinter, blanketed in snow, as it is under a hot sun. That said, it’s a more comfortable experience from spring through autumn, and temperatures are usually at their best from May to August. The seawater never gets particularly warm, so don’t expect to spend all your time frolicking in the waves. Most of the beaches are pebble or shingle rather than sand, but they still attract plenty of visitors in the peak summer months of July and August, which is also when Brighton’s famous Pride Parade, the country’s largest LGBTQ festival, takes place. A more recent tradition, the Dunwich Dynamo, takes place in June, when thousands of cyclists ride through the night from London to Brighton. Many of the area’s historic homes are closed over the winter months.

Top things to do in East Sussex

Rye

Once surrounded by water, Rye’s medieval history as a Cinque Port town, defending England from invaders, is still apparent in its 14th-century tower and the overhanging timbered houses that cluster its cobbled streets. Artists, authors, and poets have all left their literary mark here, and the golden beaches of Camber Sands are just a 10-minute drive away.

Ditchling Beacon

The highest point on the South Downs, once the site of an Iron Age fort, offers views for miles in every direction, including to the sea. It’s a popular (and strenuous) climb for cyclists, and there’s a stunning walk down the valley to Devil’s Dyke. Nearby Lewes is a historic town with a great foodie scene and charming independent shops.

Seaford Coastal Trail

Stretching 10 miles east from Saltdean, this clifftop path takes you past a host of fascinating landmarks, natural and manmade, from the Art Deco Saltdean Lido to the line that marks the Greenwich Meridian, and from the marina of Newhaven to the shingle beach at Seaford, ending on the attractive banks of the Cuckmere River.
