Santorini is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, part of Greece’s Cyclades group. Known for volcanic landscapes and coastal villages, it has a setting shaped by both natural forces and local traditions.

  • When is the best time to visit Santorini?

Late spring and early fall are often recommended due to lighter crowds and pleasant weather around 64–80°F (18–26°C). Summer brings warmth near 75–96°F (24–35°C), with very little rain and more activity across the island.

  • What are some things to do near Santorini?

You can explore ancient sites like Akrotiri, visit caldera-view villages such as Oia, and learn about local wine traditions at many vineyards. The island also has beaches, hiking trails, and museums focused on history or art.

  • How is the weather near Santorini?

Santorini has mild, wetter winters around 47–63°F (9–17°C), with heavier rainfall from December through February. Summer is dry and warm, with temperatures often reaching 75–96°F (24–35°C), while spring and autumn bring moderate warmth and less rain.

All about Santorini

The instant calm induced by the azure waters lapping against Santorini’s dramatic cliffs makes this Greek getaway one of the most coveted destinations for romance — and honeymoons. After all, the cluster of five islands — main crescent-shaped Thíra, plus the smaller Thirassiá, Asproníssi, Palea Kaméni, and Nea Kaméni sitting inside it — offer some of the most stunning sunset views in the Cyclades. So it’s jarring to realize that this dramatic natural beauty came out of 12 major volcanic eruptions, 20,000 years apart, the last of which caused the underwater caldera (volcanic crater), giving Thíra its round center.

What are the top things to do in Santorini?

Kamari Beach

Located on the east coast about four miles southeast of the main city of Fira, this black sand beach is also one of Santorini’s largest, boasting sea views complemented by Mesa Vouno Hill. The resort town’s promenade is filled with al fresco restaurants and lively nightlife.

Perissa

On the southeast corner of Thíra sits this coastal village, known for Timios Stavros Church (with its blue domes), the Museum of Minerals and Fossils, and its own black sand beach.

Fira to Oia Hike

The 6-mile walk along the caldera is one of the island’s most iconic experiences, as it passes through the towns of Imerovigli and Firostefani, while offering ocean views along the way. While it’s possible both directions, starting in Fira is a bit more of a downhill route.
