16th Century Scottish Borders Tower, by Earlston

Mary Queen of Scots stayed here when she toured her domains in the ancient Scottish Borders. The Tower rooms are in an old defensive tower (dating from 1574 on a site occupied since the 12th century). Enter a huge stone entrance, into an inner panelled hall & up a private door a narrow staircase to a tiny sitting area with shower room & kitchenette off. Finally up a spiral stone staircase leading to a romantic upper chamber. Medieval and bijoux - be the Laird or Lady of the House for the night.

Glenburnie at Thirlestane Castle

This charming one-bedroom apartment is set in the heart of the South Wing. It takes its name from the moor behind the castle that is resplendent in purple heather during late summer and early Autumn. Glenburnie was also the name of a horse bred by the Maitland family which went on to become European Champion in three-day eventing and which was ridden by local eventer Ian Stark. A portrait of the horse is reflected back into the sitting room by a large mirror in the hallway.

Accessed from the mezzanine of the castle’s Cobbled Courtyard, guests look out over the castle gardens to the rear with double-height windows throughout. The traditional flagstone floor in the hallway is a reminder of the apartment’s past, as is the historic mangle which has been re-purposed into a beautiful hallstand.
