Your guide to Sardinia
All About Sardinia
Travel to Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, and you’ll be immersed in a truly cinematic setting. The famous Costa Smeralda, or Emerald Coast, offers picturesque greenish-turquoise waters set against soft white sandy beaches and coves. Thousands of nuraghe — ancient towering stone structures built during the Bronze Age and unique to Sardinia — are scattered throughout the Italian island.
In the capital city of Caligari, you can wander the cobblestone streets of the Old Quarter, visit the historic architectural gem Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Castello, or take in the birds-eye views of the island from the Bastione di San Remy. The city’s main beach, Poetta, is the longest on the island and offers postcard-perfect views of the Golfo di Quartu, the hills of the Sella del Diavolo, and nearby ponds populated by pink flamingos. Or meander through Algero, another of Sarinia’s star attractions, to explore an ancient city bordered by golden walls built in the 16th century.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Sardinia
Sardinia is a great place to visit no matter the season. Horticultural enthusiasts head to the island between April and June to catch a glimpse of the colourful, fragrant blooms that line the cobbled streets and hilltops around the villas and cottages in sardinia. The sea temperature is warm enough for a swim during this time of year too. Summer is a great time to explore Sardinia’s spectacular beaches and cool off in the glistening waters of the Mediterranean and Tyrrhenian seas, depending on where you’re located. If you’re here in mid-August you’ll also be treated to impressive firework displays for the national Ferragosto festival. Although things aren’t quite as hot in early Autumn, it’s the perfect time to explore the cities and historic sites without overheating in the process.
Top things to do in Sardinia
Nuraghe
These unique rock structures date back to the Bronze age and are thought to have been used as observation towers and sacred rituals. There are several of these architectural wonders scattered across the island, with the most visited ones located in Barumini.
Castello District
Cagliari’s Castello quarter was once home to the wealthiest citizens of Sardinia and is said to be the city’s oldest settlement. Today, this medieval quarter, which is situated at around 100 metres above sea level, remains surrounded by the same mighty walls that once protected it from invasion. Stroll along its cobbled streets to uncover museums, royal palaces, and imposing bastions.
Sinus Peninsula
This small headland in the Oristano province is home to one of the most peaceful coastlines on the island — and one of the most scenic. The rice-like sand here captures the attention of countless visitors. Just don’t be tempted to take a sample home, as you could be hit with a hefty fine. You’ll also find a host of beachside restaurants in the area, serving up an area of Sardinian specialities.
